Prologue: an unwanted Dream

–––

The universe is filled with stories. Some tell us about cosmic horrors beyond human comprehension. Others would rather talk about the epic achievements of legendary heroes. Another ones are just content with reaching the heart of someone who wishes to hear them.

This is just another of those many stories that fly around the universe, waiting to be discovered. The tale of the fateful encounter of the hero of Dreamland and the Singularity of the Sky Realm, but also of those who make them thrive.

–––

Somewhere in the endless space, hidden between dimensions, it exists a unique world made by floating islands under a blue sky. This place is called the Sky Realm. A land of adventure and danger, dragons and beasts of divine power, magic and wonder, where ships cross the clouds instead of the seas.

Those who dare to make a living of the adventures that this world offers and discover the truth behind its legends and myths are called "Skyfarers". And in the times of our tale, two names came to mind when hearing that word: Gran and Djeeta.

Gran and Djeeta were the twin captains of the ship called Grandcypher. Rulers, warriors, mercenaries, wizards, scholars... people of all kinds had traveled with them. They have saved many people and mystical creatures, visited many places, and defeated a long list of foes, some who could easily destroy the world. And yet, their journey was far from over. Who knows where the wind will take them next, or what kind of creature would come looking for their aid?

Some beings insisted that their coexistence was an anomaly, that only one of them should exist at the same time. And even if their personalities were kinda disparate, it would seem that they shared the same soul. In their inner world, the twins shared everything: hopes, joys, dreams, hardships, the reciprocal affection towards each one of the members of their ever growing crew, Vyrn's love (after all, the little red dragon had raised them since they were babies), their life link with Lyria (the girl who changed their lives), their dreams...

...their nightmares.

The hydra was a recurrent one, a grim reminder of the first mistake that they made in their adventure. And one more night, though it was the first one in a long time, they were back at the moment where it all began.

A strange girl of sky blue hair and a delicate as a cloud figure would appear in the middle of the forest of their home island. The girl, Lyria, would ask for their help, as she had been running away form the imperial guards that had held her captive since she could remember. They would defeat the guards and then fight the hydra that their captain would send to attack them. They would die. And then, Lyria would bring them back to life, linking their lives and destinies and setting the start of their dreamt journey to Estalucia, the legendary island of the Astrals.

That is what would happen if they were reliving a memory, but they were in a twisted nightmare.

In nightmares, the outcome of that encounter used to be different. Sometimes, only one of the twins managed to get revived, breaking the other's heart. Other times, Lyria would get recaptured before she could save them, and, with their last breath, they would see the guards getting away with her as Vyrn cried their death.

And yet, the twins raised their swords in the dream. No matter what outcome they would get this time, they would fight the monster once more. But this time , they had the feeling that something was off with this vision of their past.

Instead of the tearing attack that had opened deep mortal wounds in their bodies, the hydra of their dreams had thrown a big fireball at them. The twins couldn't even process the sudden change and readied for the impact. Yet it never came. Instead, the worst possible scene, one so terrible that they had never dared to imagine it, came into their view.

As a painful surprise, Lyria and Vyrn had put their bodies in front of the twins to protect them from the attack.

"NO! MOVE ASIDE!" they screamed in despair.

It was in vain. The fireball consumed Lyria and Vyrn, their screams of pain startling Grand and Djeeta so much that they could feel their own hearts cracking. But it was just a dream, right?

It was just a dream, and yet they could feel the heat of the fire that was burning their friends alive.

It was just a dream, and yet the smoke was filling their lungs.

It was just a dream, and yet they couldn't stop looking at the grotesque scene.

It was just a dream, and yet they couldn't wake up.

Maybe it wasn't a dream.

The twins let out a heartrending scream as they felt their very soul break apart.

A scream that wasn't let go unheard in the real world.

"Gran? Djeeta? It's only a dream. Wake up!" Lyria pleaded with anguish, as she shook Gran in an attempt to wake him up. Beside her, Vyrn was trying to do the same with Djeeta.

"What is going on? Why aren't they waking up" the little dragon asked. He was afraid and confused because the twins weren't reacting at all. "Can you hear us? It is not real!" he called.

Gran and Djeeta squirmed in their sleep, suffering reflected in their faces. Lyria and Vyrn couldn't help but wonder about what kind of terrible dream they were having. Suddenly, they stopped, still and quiet, but Lyria could feel that the shared soul of the twins was slowly withering.

"Please, wake up" Lyria cried, tears falling from her eyes to the twins' cheeks.

"GRAN, DJEETA" Vyrn shouted in despair.

Water hit Gran's cheek. Not even a second later, a second drop of water fell on Djeeta. Both of them looked up. Was it raining? No, it wasn't. It was Lyria, crying at the same time that Vyrn called their names.

But Lyria and Vyrn are dead, their conscience reprimanded.

And yet, the tears felt even more real than the fire and the smoke.

We couldn't protect them, that voice in their head said again

Then, why hadn't their link with Lyria taken them too? Why could they hear Vyrn's voice so clearly?

You have failed, that voice didn't belong to any of them.

Lyria and them shared the same lifeforce. If they were alive, she was alive too. And that could only mean one thing: what they were seeing wasn't real.

Gran and Djeeta felt as if they had just woken up from a trance. They breathed deeply, the fear and stress induced by the terrible nightmare fading away. Of course it was just a dream. How could they had been carried away so much by it?

"They have played us for fools again" they said at the same time.

"Jinx! You now own me a dessert" Djeeta laughed at her brother, who rolled his eyes in annoyance. Was she serious? It was no time for joking.

The twins looked around them. They were in a place that was oddly similar to the surface of the Moon, but the sky was totally different, like if other stars had taken the place of those they knew. Also, their blue planet was nowhere to be seen.

But they weren't alone. They could feel an ominous presence in the air.

"Who is there?" Gran menacingly asked, taking his weapon out and adopting a back to back fight stance with her sister.

"Is this your doing, Belial?" Djeeta accused to usual suspect, pointing her sword up.

There wasn't an answer. They looked at each other, confused. It couldn't have been Belial, as he would had come out to taunt the twins immediately.

The moon's surface, as well as its strange sky, started to fade away. Gran and Djeeta knew that it was the moment to wake up.

The first thing they saw when they opened their eyes was the eyes of Lyria and Vyrn brimming with tears.

"Thank goodness" Lyria said, relieved, hugging them tenderly.

"We were so worried" Vyrn added, joining into the hug.

"Don't worry. It was just a nightmare" Gran calmed them."But it felt so real."

"Way too real" his sister added."And we weren't alone."

"What does that mean?" Vyrn asked worriedly.

"I think something wanted to trap us in the dream" she explained.

"You should talk to Phoebe then" Lyria suggested after thinking about it for a bit. "She is the one who knows the most about dreams around here, after all. She should be at Raduga right now, helping Ladiva."

Gran and Djeeta agreed. Phoebe was a primal beast able to control dreams. If anyone on the ship could discover the true nature of the odd nightmare, it was her. And, maybe, she could even identify the strange being that had lurked behind them.

Somewhere between existence and non–existence, the final frontier between reality and dreams, a conscience wondered about the dream it had just manipulated.

The Singularity of the Sky Realm was something that he hadn't even thought about in his initial plan. But the nightmare he had sent had provided useful information in regards to how to deal with them. If he played his pieces well, the existence of the Singularity would play in his favor.

About that other obstacle... If everything went according to his calculations, the Star Rod shouldn't be a problem. And without the legendary artifact, the bravery and individual power of the one who had used it to destroy his body in the past wouldn't matter. Yes, revenge was going to be so sweet. Just a few moments more and he would be free.

And then the sky and the stars would tremble in fear.

At the same time, in a far away world, a pink puffball was woken up by a butterfly that had come into his house from an open window, and then had rested on his head. The little puffball yawned and opened his blue eyes, full of hope and joy, as he got up (which made the butterfly flutter away). He looked outside the window and smiled because it was a beautiful morning.

A new day was starting on Dreamland and Kirby was ready for a new adventure.
