Mortal Kombat
Season 1, Chapter 1: Investigation
It was a sunny day in New York City in 1990. A military helicopter was flying over the large and busy city; some people stared up at the chopper, while others ignored it and went about their daily lives. Inside the helicopter were three figures, one was a muscled African-American, one was an athletic blonde woman, and the third was a muscular redheaded man. All three were in military uniforms; the redhead looked outside a window inside the chopper,
"*whistle* Man, I gotta tell ya, never seen New York from this altitude," he said, impressed.
"Eh, you've seen one city from a helicopter; you've seen them all." the blonde woman said.
The helicopter lands on top of a building; waiting for them was a blonde man with a police badge, a mainly light blue shirt with gray shoulders, black pants with black boots, black fingerless gloves, and on his head was a black cap. The man walked up to the three as they exited the helicopter and greeted them.
"Hey there. Kurtis Stryker, NYPD." the man said, shaking the hands of the three.
"Major Jackson Briggs. These are Lieutenants Sonya Blade and Lance Sparkson. U.S. Special Forces." the African American man said.
"So why did the police need us here?" Lance asked
"Word is the Special Forces is looking into the gangs related to this crime scene. Follow me." Stryker said to them; the four then went to a warehouse with various police barriers around it. The four enter the warehouse and come across a scene out of a horror show. There was blood everywhere and more bodies than it seemed one could even count. The bodies showed signs of being shot, stabbed, sliced apart, burned, blown up, or some combination thereof. Some of the bodies were wearing what appeared to be jumpsuits with straps, metal helmets with red goggles, and a symbol on their chest of what looked like a red dragon head. The other bodies wore what looked like punk attire; many of them either had symbols on their clothes or tattooed on their skin of a knife between two black dragons.
"Jesus..." Lance said, looking at the carnage around the warehouse.
"Seems pretty straightforward, Red Dragon and Black Dragon fight." Sonya said, examining some of the bodies, "but why would the Red Dragon come to New York City?"
"That's not all I'm afraid. The reason we called you here is cause of one of the bodies that were identified," Stryker said, showing them a body.
Jax, Sonya, and Lance knew who the body belonged to, Black Dragon Lieutenant, No Face. He was wearing a black top with what looked like khaki pants, black boots, brown shoulder pads, brown gloves, a Black Dragon symbol on the top, dynamite strapped to a belt, and a tank of flamethrower fuel on the back. The exposed part was a face that was heavily scarred, with no nose and what appeared to be disfigurements caused by burns. However, it was hard to determine the details due to what was done to the body. The stomach was cut open; intestines poured out, there were cuts at the ankles, severing the feet completely, and finally, the entire head above the bottom jaw was cut off entirely.
"So No Face is dead; I can't really say he didn't have it coming," Jax said, looking at the mutilated body.
"The cuts look familiar." Lance said, examining the points where the body was cut, "Hook swords."
"Could be an explanation, Kabal joined the Red Dragon, and he helped them kill No Face to prove he was serious," Sonya said.
"Funny you mention that. Kabal is actually in NYPD custody." Stryker revealed to the others, them looking at the officer surprised.
"You managed to arrest Kabal?" Sonya asked
"Well, that's the funny thing...we didn't. He turned himself in." Stryker said.
Jax, Sonya, Lance, and Stryker had arrived at a large NYPD Station; Stryker led them to a questioning room, where a man with long black hair, a soul patch, mutton chops, and wearing a brown outfit, a green coat with black shoulders, black gloves, and black boots was sitting in a chair.
"He's been here about a week." Stryker said.
"Hey Kurtis." Kabal said to Stryker before seeing the three others with him, "Special Forces are here?"
"Yeah, we are." Sonya said, "and we're also wondering why the hell you would turn yourself in to the police."
"I was already in New York and figured it would be the best option." Kabal said
"You'll have to forgive our skepticism that you just decided to turn yourself in." Lance said.
"Look, I know it sounds suspicious," Kabal said, "but I had enough. I wasn't too big on being put in a grave. This war with the Red Dragon has gotten too many people killed."
"Then why did you help Red Dragon kill No Face?" Jax asked
"No Face is dead? Poor bastard...and I don't know what you're talking about; even if you think I killed No Face, I'd never help the Red Dragon." Kabal said
"Even if that's true, and I'm still not entirely convinced that it is, why would the Red Dragon be in New York City?" Jax asked.
"If I had to guess, it's cause Kano recently bought off a Red Dragon doctor" Kabal said, "guess the Red Dragon wants him back. If you need information, Kano's going to be doing a deal at the Harbor at midnight tonight."
"Do you think we can trust him?" Sonya asked as the four walked out of the room.
"Kabal has given the NYPD Black Dragon information the past week, and it's all been good." Stryker said.
"In that case, we got a chance at nabbing Kano and putting a huge dent in Black Dragon operations." Lance said
"Agreed. Alright, let's do it. Only the three of us will go, in case it's a trap. No point in getting a whole bunch of officers killed." Jax said, "We'll call for backup if it turns out to be legit."
That midnight at the New York Harbor, Jax, Sonya, and Lance arrived and snuck around the place until they found a boat docked in the Harbor. They moved in to get a closer look, hiding behind some crates; there, they saw some Black Dragon goons in their usual punk attire; said goons were boarding the boat and unloading crates. Four figures walk into sight of the Special Forces team; a tanned woman with short black hair, two sheathed swords, and wearing a two-piece skin-tight purple jumpsuit with black armbands and black boots; her arms, midsection, and cleavage were exposed. The second figure was a man with short black hair and a soul patch, wearing reddish-brown armor on his arms and legs, green pants, and a reddish-brown vest exposing his abs and chest and a sheathed axe on his back. The Third figure was a heavily muscled man wearing brown ninja attire on his lower body. His upper body had large leather straps, a brown hood on his head, and a metal mask on his face covering his nose and mouth, and he also had rocky textures on his chest and his arms. Finally, the fourth figure was a man with a mustache and beard combo, black hair, an overall muscled body, wearing a leather vest, dark-colored pants, black boots with sheathed knives on them, straps on his arms and hands, a sash with a glowing red core on it. He had a glowing red, cybernetic eye connected to a cybernetic implant on his face. Jax, Sonya, and Lance knew full well who these were, the head honchos of the Black Dragon: Tasia, Jarek, Tremor, and Black Dragon's leader, Kano.
"Damn, it's not just Kano; all the big guys are here." Lance whispered.
Kano began making a deal with the people on the boat until everyone there heard shouting, a Black Dragon goon running to them.
"Red Dragon! The Red Dragon are-" the goon said before a large laser blasted through his midsection, cutting his whole body clean in half.
Behind the now-dead goon was standing a man; he looked Mongolian in origin and had a pencil-thin mustache with a tiny beard. He was wearing dark green pants with black boots and a long dark green coat with a furred collar, the coat was sleeveless, and it was open to expose his chest; he also wore a green military cap with a Red Dragon symbol on it. He also had a few red stars tattooed on his face, including over his eye. On his chest over where his heart would be; there was instead a large cybernetic implant showing a glowing red core, the light fading implying that was where the laser came from, his cybernetics also showed in the form of a cybernetic shoulder pad with a Red Dragon Symbol on it. Behind him were several Red Dragon members in militaristic jumpsuits and metal helmets with red goggles. All the members were aiming their guns.
"Kano is mine; kill the rest." the man said before the Red Dragon goons started opening fire, the Black Dragon goons promptly returning fire.
The man ran towards Kano and slammed his hands together, creating a gust of wind that sent Kano back.
"Hsu Hao, long time no see, ya ugly bugger." Kano smirked as he got up and pulled out his knives.
"Did you really think you could steal from the Red Dragon and get away with it?" Hsu Hao said, pulling out two Sun & Moon Spear Swords.
"Can you really call it stealing when that fine doctor came along willingly? And how can ya blame me for wantin' him with his fine craftsmanship." Kano said, pointing a knife toward his cyber-eye to emphasize his point. "Just had his work on my eye, a lot simpler than what he did to you."
"But is it as powerful?" Hsu Hao asked before his chest core lit up and fired a large laser, Kano rolling to the size and dodging it.
Jax, Sonya, and Lance were now caught in the middle of a large firefight between the Black Dragon and Red Dragon. Calling Stryker for backup now would just lead to more chaos and people dying.
"Look! Kano's getting away!" Lance said, pointing to Kano running to a truck with Tasia, Jarek, and Tremor, Tremor forming a wall of rocks to shield them from the bullets.
"There's too much heat; we gotta go." Jax said
"I'm fast enough; I can catch him!" Lance said before making a dash out of cover.
"Lance, wait!" Sonya yelled as Lance sprinted across the fight toward the truck.
Kano saw Lance running towards them and smirked, "Jarek, hand me the RPG." he said
"What about the cargo?" Jarek asked, "It's explosive."
"That's the idea." Kano said as Jarek gave him an RPG, he aimed at a crate Lance was getting close to and fired it.
The rocket launched over to the crate, Lance saw it and tried to get out of the way, but the rocket hit the container, causing a huge explosion. Said explosion reached the other crates and caused a chain reaction, making the explosion even bigger. Hsu Hao gave a massive clap of his hands, causing a large gust of mighty wind to deflect the blast away from him.
"Lance!" Sonya yelled and started to run toward the area of the explosion, but Jax grabbed her and held her back.
"Sonya, we gotta go!" he said, Sonya staring at the blast in horror and shock, tears starting to form in her eyes before she ran off with Jax.
It was a regular morning in Los Angeles in 1992. Jax entered an apartment building and knocked on a door.
"Sonya? You there?" Jax asked before the door opened; Sonya standing there, "You called me over?"
"Yeah, I did; I gotta show you something." Sonya said, bringing Jax into her apartment, said apartment was a mess, with discarded food containers everywhere. She brought him into a room with a wall covered in various documents, pictures, and theories regarding Kano's whereabouts. "I've been tracking down Kano's location the past two years, and now I know where he is going to be. He's going to Hong Kong."
"Sonya..." Jax said, putting his hand on Sonya's shoulder. "I miss Lance too, but this? This is getting out of hand."
"Jax, with all due respect, Lance is dead, and the Kano and the Black Dragon are still out there. That's not right." Sonya said, "Lance wanted to take down the Black Dragon more than any of us; the least I can do is finish what he wanted."
Jax sighed. "Alright...fine. But only cause I can't stand seeing you like this anymore. So why is Kano going to China?" he asked.
"He's been invited." Sonya said
"Invited?"
"Yeah." Sonya said, "To a special exclusive fighting tournament. They say it's only held every 50 years. It's known...as Mortal Kombat."
