Chapter 1: The Basement
Sometime before the interview with Alfred in Chapter 29
Ludwig Belsichmidt, Francis Bonnefoy's assistant, returned from the basement. Another failed akuminization. Ludwig went to sit on the couch and put his head in his hands.
Ludwig had been doing the same thing for two years, going on three now. Progress had stagnated, and it didn't seem like anything would be changing on his current route.
Ludwig needed a lead, maybe a hint to Ladybug or Cat Noir's identity. Maybe then he could talk to them and get them on his side. But Ludwig knew the chance of doing that was slim and highly unlikely.
What he really needed was an ally. Ladybug and Cat Noir had each other, but Ludwig was by himself as Hawkmoth.
Ludwig felt the couch shift as a weight was added. "Ludwig, I know you're doing something behind my back." Ludwig swiped his hands through his hair and sat up. Ludwig shifted his baby blue eyes to meet Francis's cobalt blue.
"Sir, I-I'm not–."
"Non, don't try to deny it. I saw you disappear during Arthur's birthday party, then the chaos started." Francis took a sip from his wine glass.
"I just went out to–."
"I've noticed you've been absent when I've needed you on various occasions."
"Sir, I can't–."
Francis held up his hand. "I can feel that something is not right. Ludwig, are you responsible for these akumas that have been giving people trouble?"
Ludwig sighed. "I need to show you something." Ludwig got up and heard the soft clink of the glass as Francis set his wine down on the table.
"Alright."
Ludwig walked down the familiar hallways to a familiar door that led to the basement. He opened the black wooden door, and flicked on the lights.
Marble white steps led down into the basement. Ludwig began his dissent. He heard the soft patter of M. Bonnefoy's feet as his weight was also added to each step. He was glad the older man was still following him.
And then they came upon the glass coffin of Ava Bonnefroy surrounded by a sanctuary of butterflies.
"Ludwig, how is this possible? I thought they declared she was missing." He said going over to the coffin and delicately pressing his hands to the glass, at level with Ava's face.
"I didn't want you to be even more upset so, I had this prepared in secret. I just wanted to stall for time. I hadn't expected it to take this long to get the Ladybug and Cat miraculouses."
"What do you need them for?"
"To make a wish. The miraculouses have the power to bring Ava back to life."
"Ludwig, that is pure nonsense." Francis shook his head.
"Sir, have you seen what the Butterfly Miraculous can do? I was skeptical at first as well, but this has made me believe in the impossible." Ludwig said, taking off the miraculous and holding it up to his face. Francis turned and looked at the butterfly brooch; his eyebrows furrowed before he looked at Ludwig.
Francis frowned, a moment of silence passed before he sighed, "Ok, I am still unsure, but I want to help. What can I do?"
"I found this pinned to Ava's body. At first I was going to leave it on her, but then I realized that it was a miraculous. I haven't used it; I didn't think I'd get to this point." Ludwig said before turning and going towards a shelf that held a little wooden box. Ludwig picked it up and opened it up to show a silver pin that looked like fanned out peacock feathers.
"Ava knew of these miraculous things?" Francis said, picking up the silver pin.
"I suppose so, maybe she was planning to obtain the butterfly one as well. This sanctuary is hers; I've just been keeping it up." Ludwig said, placing the box back onto the shelf.
"So how do I activate it?" Francis asked.
Ludwig shook his head, "I don't know. I usually just grab a butterfly and enclose it with my hands. It turns a dark purple almost black color and I set it free. Sometimes I say "Fly away my little Akuma" because the man at the shop told me that was what they were called. Maybe you can say anything."
"Transformez-moi !" And suddenly a fan filled with white feathers appeared in his hand. Ludwig gasped and noticed the pin turned blue with pink circles, resembling peacock feathers. "Ludwig! Ludwig, what is this?" Francis looked frightened almost.
"I think it is your source for your Akumas. Apparently our powers are similar. You use feathers to manipulate people's emotions." Ludwig said, plucking a singular feather from the fan.
Francis frowned, "I wanted to have a weapon. I do not like manipulating people's emotions."
"Neither do I, but I am using what I was given. You have to be willing to sacrifice your morals if you really want Ava to come back to life. We are messing with nature so there will be consequences." Ludwig's expression was stern as he looked into Francis's cobalt blue eyes.
He held his gaze for a moment before giving him an affirmative nod.
"Try it out on me to see what you can do."
"But you aren't feeling any negative emotions."
"That is true, I suppose we'll have to wait until someone's upset about something."
"How long does that usually take?"
"Not long."

Feliks Edelstein had been told by his father that he was going to be receiving a call from Arthur because he had tickets to see a magic show. Feliks had just put his feelings for the blond haired model away; Arthur had told him point blank that he had no interest in him.
But like the hopeless romantic he was, his heart jumped at the opportunity. So, he waited by the phone to receive his call.
And when he finally did, he put on his most elated tone of voice, "Oh Arthurkins I was expecting you'd call. You like feel bad about rejecting me so you wanted to take me out to make up for it because you changed your mind."
"Um no. I'm calling you because Francis forced me. You don't like magic shows, right Feliks?"
"I-I think magic shows are like so fake, but if that's something you like then I'd be happy to go with you."
Feliks could hear Arthur sigh, " I was already planning to take someone else. I'm just going to tell Francis you don't want to go so, I can take them instead."
"How rude of you! Who are you taking? Not Honda-Wang right?"
"Well…"
"I'm going to tell Daddy that you just want to go with Honda-Wang and not me, and then Monsieur Bonnefoy won't let you go!"
"Come on Feliks! Why should I be forced to spend time with you if I don't want to?"
"You used to like spending time with me! I'm your best friend!"
"I don't like what kind of person you've become to our peers! Y-you're not my best friend anymore!"
"F-fine y-you...y-you and stupid Honda-Wang c-can have each other!" Feliks pressed the end call button on his phone and threw it onto the bed.
Fresh hot tears streamed down his face.

"Oh! I feel something strong." Francis said, "Like someone has gotten their heartbroken." He plucked a feather from his fan and enclosed it with his hand. When he opened it the feather was a dark blue color.
It floated in the air and Ludwig rushed to open a window.
"So now what?" Francis asked.
"It's going to attach itself to an object and then you'll be able to control the person. But be prepared to observe what that person does with their new powers just in case they go off script. Our main goal is the miraculouses not their petty vendetta."
Ludwig watched as an outline of a blue mask appeared over Francis's face.
"A-ah I am sorry that he broke your heart but you can get revenge with my magic."
"Magic? That's rich. I'd like to destroy that stupid show." Feliks responded and Francis gasped.
Francis frowned, "You will be able to! Take your noble steed and destroy all in your path. All I ask is that you obtain Ladybug and Cat Noir's Miraculouses."
"So like who are you?"
"Young man, you may call me Paon."

Kiku Honda-Wang had finally gotten over his long standing crush on super model Arthur Kirkland and could enjoy his company without stumbling over his words.
So here they were at a magic show, and it seemed to Kiku that Arthur was enjoying himself. Kiku knew that magic shows were fake, having seen real magic in the form of Hawkmoth, Kuro Neko and Arthur's own spells but the other boy seemed to be really excited about it so he could put away his biases for now.
"And for my next trick I would like to bring up a volunteer." The magician, named The Mysterious Alexandro said.
Various people in the crowd raised their hands before the magician called on someone near the middle. Kiku couldn't see who it was that got picked but they made their way onstage.
Once onstage Kiku could see that the person was none other than Feliks. Kiku could guess that the mayor had paid The Mysterious Alexandro to include Feliks in his performance.
"Feliks?" He heard Arthur say and he turned to look at the other teen.
Arthur's expression was of shock and confusion.
"So young man, what is your name?" The Mysterious Alexandro asked.
Feliks took the microphone from him, "Everyone already knows who I am and I'm not here to participate in your cheap act."
"Now that wasn't nice. My next trick is going to be fun. If you'd like to participate, step into my box of illusions." An assistant rolled out a tall human sized box with swirls on it onto the stage.
Feliks sighed, "I don't really care about your show. I'm actually here to ruin it and you can all thank Arthur for that." He said before shouting "Pony Pegasus rise!"
And through the roof crashed a horse with wings. Everyone gasped before breaking out into applause. The Mysterious Alexandro took the microphone back, "Yes this was all part of my plan," before he took a bow.
Well that was until the horse started shooting laser beams out of its eyes, vaporizing anyone it came into contact with. The crowd broke out into screams as they tried to flee the auditorium the magic show was held in. It quickly descended into chaos.
Kiku knew that this was a Ladybug emergency. Kiku grabbed Arthur's hand, the boy hadn't moved since the first person was vaporized, and dragged him towards the exit. "Arthur, come on!"
Thankfully they managed to escape with the bulk of the people who were nearest to the door.
When Kiku stopped running they were outside and managed to find shelter in a nearby cafe. Kiku noticed Arthur's expression was panicked and ignored the brief stares they got from the patrons for having rushed in so suddenly.
"T-those people, they're dead because of me."
"No, no that's not your fault it was Hawkmoth."
"Feliks didn't look akumatized to me." Kiku noticed his eyes were becoming wet, Kiku gripped the other boy's shoulders.
"Something is wrong. Felik's wouldn't hurt innocent people like that just because you upset him. There has to be some kind of magical influence over him."
It did not stop tears from falling down his cheeks, "W-what if m-m- Cat Noir's magic can't reverse that?"
"If he can't, then we'll know his power has limits and that Hawkmoth is even more of a threat, either way I have to go back home. Are you going to be alright?" Kiku said.
"Yeah, I have to leave anyway as well." Arthur said furiously, wiping away his tears. And with that Kiku and Arthur ran out of the cafe and off in opposite directions.
Kiku changed into his Ladybug attire in an alleyway. When he ran out he almost ran into someone else, they stopped within a few centimeters of each other.
"Kuro Neko?"
"Ladybug?"
Kiku took a few steps back, "You should watch where you're going."
"You're one to talk, you almost ran into me." He paused for a moment, smirking, "Not that I would have minded."
Just then outside Pony Pegasus rose above the building where the magic show was held. Feliks was now riding Pony Pegasus. Pony Pegasus vaporized nearby cars and more civilians below, as Feliks laughed at the destruction he was causing.
Kiku looked back at him, "Do you know what kind of akuma we're dealing with?"
"No. I've never seen anything like it, but I have a feeling Feliks is controlling it somehow."
"Well let's bring him down to our level so we can talk."
Kiku said, swinging his grappling clip and throwing it. It caught around Pony Pegasus's back right hoof.
Kiku tugged the string and Pony Pegasus neighed.
"Ladybug and Cat Noir? You're like just who I wanted to see!" Feliks said.
"Would you mind coming down?" Kuro Neko asked.
"Yeah sure, when I come down you're totally going to give me your miraculouses right?"
"No. Why would we do that?"
"That Paon guy said I had to get them or he'll take Pony Pegasus away."
Paon? Does this mean he has the peacock miraculous? The guide did say that there were more out there.
"Paon? Don't you mean Hawkmoth?" Kuro Neko asked him
"No! But since you won't give me your miraculouses I'll just have to take them!" Feliks willed Pony Pegasus to go higher. Kiku tried to plant his feet on the ground but he was starting to become airborne.
Kiku looked down as the ground got further and further away.
Feliks looked back towards him. "Are you afraid of heights Ladybug?" Feliks asked, "Because if you don't give me your miraculous I'll take your little clip off of Pony Pegasus."
Kiku looked up at Feliks and tried to find where the akuma could be, if Paon was anything like Hawkmoth. He noticed Feliks was wearing a bracelet and guessed that this akuma was there.
Feliks smiled, "Fine-" Suddenly he was grabbed, therefore knocking him off of Pony Pegasus. Kiku blinked and decided to start his ascent. When he climbed on top of Pony Pegasus he was jerked downwards. As Pony Pegasus made a sharp right turn Kiku wrapped his arms around the creature's neck.
Kiku looked up to see Pony Pegasus was in the position to shoot it's lazer at Kuro Neko, who was holding Feliks upside down by his ankle. Kiku gripped his clip and brought it around the creature's neck. He pulled, causing the creature to tilt upwards and misfire into a nearby lamp.
Kuro Neko had his baton stuck into the side of a building, suspending himself and Feliks in midair. He looked back at Kiku, before swinging Feliks and tossing him backwards. Kiku gasped as he felt Pony Pegasus jerk forwards in an attempt to catch Feliks.
Feliks screamed and flailed his arms, Kiku used his clip to catch him instead because Pony Pegasus was too far away. Kiku pulled him up onto Pony Pegasus and was able to take the bracelet from him because he was tied up in his grappling clip.
Kiku snapped the bracelet in half and a blue feather floated out.
A feather?
"That's new," Kuro Neko said as Pony Pegasus flew nearby him.
"Do you think my clip will de-evilize it?"
"Probably?" He shrugged from his place perched upon his baton.
Kiku caught the feather in his clip and out floated a white feather.
Pony Pegasus started to disappear. Kiku scrambled to catch Feliks. And he felt a grip on his ankle. Kiku found himself hanging upside down, while also holding on to Feliks. He looked up to see Kuro Neko struggling to keep his grip on him without being weighed down.
"I should have taken up strength training."
"Don't strain yourself. I could get us down."
"A-are you sure? I don't feel comfortable dropping you."
"Could you both decide to do something? I don't like not being on the ground!" Feliks screamed.
"Hai, I am. Just stay put after you let go"
"Ok Ladybug, if you're completely sure." With that Kuro Neko let go of his ankle and Kiku unhooked his clip from around Feliks and used it to hook around Kuro Neko's baton. He caught Feliks, who was screaming in fright and swung them to safety onto the ground.
Kuro Neko used the line of Kiku's clip to climb down, before Kiku pulled the clip, taking the baton out of the side of the building, and retracted it towards himself.
"Thank you for saving me, Ladybug. Quick selfie for Snapblab?" Kiku started to say something but the teen clicked the photo so fast. "Cool. I'm going to call my driver."
"U-um Ladybug do you think my power will work in reversing the destruction of the Peacock Miraculous?" Kuro Neko looked uneasy.
"I don't know. You'll have to try it."
"What if I can't bring back those people who are dead? What are we going to say to their families?"
Kiku put a hand on the other hero's shoulder, "We'll just have to tell them what happened. And we'll all have to be more careful because there is a more dangerous villain than Hawkmoth out there."
Kuro Keko nodded, albeit sadly. Kiku stepped back as he took out his wand and said his magic word,"Hota!"
Kiku watched as everything was engulfed in a bright white light before it faded and Kuro Neko fainted. Kiku was going to catch him but suddenly a crowd of people appeared. Most were children. Kiku could assume they had been vaporized during the magic show.
When Kuro Neko got back up he received a unanimous "Thank you Chat Noir" from the crowd. Kuro Neko nodded, but didn't say anything more. Kiku noticed his eyes were wet as a few children ran up to hug him. Then the crowd started to disperse and the previously vaporized people went to reconnect with those who had escaped.
Kiku gave Kuro Neko a small smile.

Ludwig frowned, eyebrows furrowed, "We weren't even close."
"Ludwig, did you see Feliks kill those innocent children?" Are you not at least happy that they are alive?"
"We could have reversed that damage after we had both miraculouses. But it is interesting that you cannot control the sentient monsters that are created. It might be a problem if you can't get them under control if they go off track."
Francis frowned, "If I get used to my powers maybe I can create a monster myself."
Ludwig raised his eyebrows, "That would be useful."
A/N: I was so confused when I found out there's a Miraculous episode called Kuro Neko in season 4. I stopped watching the show, but was on Tumblr and saw the tags like "Why is that familiar to me?" and snorted when I remembered this story.
Thank you for reading! Criticism welcome.
