A/N:

Okay, I'd like to preface this story with some important information. Firstly, this is an original-cast Danganronpa fic, as well as an AU, which means that there will be some changes that have been made for the purposes of the story. As for the Original Characters that make up the cast, they are my own characters. As such, any similarities between them and other Danganronpa fan characters are purely coincidental.

Also, I'd like to thank my friend Dan. I went to him for feedback on this prologue, as he himself has done some fanfic writing, and his support has been much appreciated.

With that said, I hope you enjoy this fic. C&C appreciated.

It was the end of the school year in Hope's Peak Academy. An exciting time where both the incredibly talented Ultimate students and the comparatively mediocre reserve course students were able to relax after a year's worth of lessons. Most students waited for the year's end with bated breath, which was certainly understandable. Despite being the best at what they do, Ultimates are people too, and people have their limits in regards to how much academia they can stomach at once...Well, perhaps unless you were that one very, very passionate hall monitor.

For the older Senior students, of course, the end of the school year meant something much, much greater. One thing that people said about Hope's Peak was that graduating from it guaranteed a successful life. This was more or less true, if one were to consider how successful pretty much all students became once they graduated and were able to put their skills to good use. Thus, most of the graduating Ultimate students were incredibly excited, this excitement only muted by the school's insistence to perform a public graduation ceremony.

The weather was perfect, and hope was in the air. A multitude of students in their uniforms were lined up neatly next to each other in rows, some more open to the prospect of standing around waiting through a speech from the headmaster than others. Speaking of which, in front of those lined-up students was the headmaster himself, an aged man with brown hair, with hints of gray. In front of him was a crowd of proud family members and other excited onlookers. The family members were obviously there to see their children take their first proper steps into adulthood. The others were most likely just passionate about the future of the country, as well as the world as a whole.

The headmaster approached a podium centered on a wood platform, adjusting the microphone attached to it before speaking into said microphone. "Ahem," the headmaster cleared his throat. "Excuse me. Now, I'd like to thank all of you for being here today to see these Ultimates off. To all the family members in the audience, I can guarantee you that this day will be one to remember for all involved. I myself can attest to the fact that seeing your kin achieve their fullest potential is the greatest thing in the whole world. With this in mind, I'd like to thank-"

One of the uniformed students, a boy by the name of Naoko Koga, began to tune out the headmaster's speech. Heartwarming as it was meant to be, he didn't care much for it. He was mainly interested in getting back home. It wasn't like he just wanted to kick back and relax, mind you. He was fully intent on finding work within the near future. The only thing that he could think of that could get in the way of that was the fact that his Ultimate Talent wasn't the kind that one would look at and say "I know exactly where you should work after graduation!". He wasn't an Ultimate Actor, or Ultimate Swimmer, or even an Ultimate Detective. He had a talent, but he needed to figure out how best to apply it, and even at the point he was at, he still wasn't sure how. He figured that was just what growing up was like.

He spent the time that he had looking around at his fellow graduates, interested in seeing what the general mood was. Naoko was in the middle row, so he couldn't get a very good view of the students in front, but he could see who was next to him and behind him okay. Plenty of the students were fairly content, while some others were looking impatient or simply bored. He even saw one girl that looked really nervous, to the point where it looked like she was going to start hyperventilating. Was she dreading something? Hard to say. Hardly anyone else looked bothered, so maybe she was just an exception.

Naoko shrugged it off and continued observing his fellow students, a few of which briefly returned his gaze. After some time of this, the headmaster's speech neared its conclusion, and that meant that the ceremony was wrapping up. He thought that maybe he should pay better attention to what the headmaster was saying. That's when things became fuzzy. His perception of what was going on around him faded, and soon there was nothing but blackness...

Naoko woke up slowly and groggily, not having the energy to do much other than lift his head and move a few strands of his short brown hair out of his green eyes. He was in a small, featureless bed, which definitely was not his own. Where was he, then? He looked around. To the sides of the bed were white curtains that went up almost to the ceiling. The walls and ceiling were made of smooth gray stone. At the other end of the room was a bed just like the one he was in, surrounded by the same kind of curtains that his was. He must've been inside some sort of hospital room. Was he in an accident? If so, why wasn't he hooked up to anything?

Naoko needed a good look around. He threw the thin white blanket off of himself and got up and looked around. Directly to his left, there was a desk with various medical supplies strewn about it. To his right, he could see the door out of the room. He moved to the door, looking left and right on the way over. He could see that multiple beds were set up in the room, divided by those plain white curtains. When Naoko was getting close to the door, he noticed something in one of the beds to his left. It looked like someone was under the bed's blanket. Was there someone else in there with him?

Naoko stepped forward cautiously, and tried to get a look at who was in the bed. What he saw was...not what he was expecting. He wasn't sure what he was expecting exactly, but he didn't think it'd be someone in a yellow helmet. Specifically, it looked like a protective helmet with a metallic exterior. He could see that it had a glass part on the front that allowed him to see their face. It looked like a boy about his age, with black hair and a skin tone even lighter than his own. Naoko couldn't help but wonder why exactly the guy was wearing what he was wearing. It was something he'd never seen before, and a far cry from Naoko's more modest outfit of a red shirt, blue jeans and sneakers. Just what else was this kid wearing? He'd have to see him without that blanket covering him.

Naoko considered touching him, in the hopes of waking him up, when the boy began to open his eyes on his own. His eyes were blue. That was one more thing that Naoko knew about this stranger right off the bat. The boy's eyes darted and made contact with Naoko's. "Huh?" the boy said, sounding as confused as Naoko was. The boy started to remove the blanket, and Naoko could see that the boy was wearing not only a protective metal helmet, but an entire suit that covered him from head to toe. He looked like some sort of golden-yellow android. The boy propped up his body with his right hand, looking straight at Naoko inquisitively. "I'm sorry, but where am I? Did I get into another accident?"

"Beats me," Naoko responded. "I'm about as confused as you are." The boy raised an eyebrow at this.

"Wait, are you serious? You don't know where we are?"

Naoko searched his brain for an answer other than "no" and fell short, legitimately stumped as to where the two of them were. Of course, alongside the question of where they were, there was also the question of how they got there. Naoko wasn't sure if he could answer that question, either. The last thing he remembered was...a high school graduation ceremony? "I'm sorry, I don't know. Maybe we're in a hospital or something, but that's just a guess."

The boy in the suit got up and looked around the room. "I dunno," he said, gesturing to the room, "this doesn't look much like one. Most hospitals I've been to have had some sort of tiling. The walls and floor are both smooth. So's the ceiling, actually."

"Okay, if that's what you think," Naoko said. "Can I ask you something?"

"Is it about the suit?" the boy asked quickly, gesturing to himself. "Don't worry, people ask about it all the time."

"No, no, that's not what I had in mind," Naoko responded. "I was wondering what the last thing you remember is. Maybe it'll help explain where we are."

The boy took a moment to think about this. "The last thing I remember, huh? I'd say...the last thing I remember is something about graduating high school. You?"

Naoko was taken aback at this. "Really? I'm in the same boat. The last thing I remember is something about graduating. For some reason, I don't remember what high school."

"That's...odd." The boy tapped the side of his head lightly, looking deep in thought. "I don't get it. Why don't I remember? Shit. This can't be good. I gotta figure this out."

"Let's calm down first," Naoko suggested. "Maybe for now we should introduce ourselves. I'm Naoko Koga."

The boy smiled lightly, seeming open to the idea. "Nice to meet you. My name's Mareo Hano. If you're wondering why I'm wearing all...this," he said, gesturing to his entire body, "I can explain that. I'm an Ultimate. Specifically, I'm the Ultimate Patient."

Naoko's eyes widened. "You're an Ultimate too? I wasn't expecting that."

"Yep," Mareo replied simply. "And you're an Ultimate? What's your talent?"

"Oh, uh…" Naoko scratched the back of his head. "It may seem silly, but I'm the Ultimate Puzzle Solver."

Mareo let out a chuckle. "That's not a bad talent, honestly. Sounds a lot more dignified than Ultimate Patient."

"Huh? What's so undignified about being an Ultimate Patient?"

"I wear the suit for a reason," Mareo explained. "Basically, even with the suit, I'm in the hospital a lot. Mostly for the purposes of checkups, but still. I was born with an anomalous medical condition. It makes it so that my body is really, really fragile."

"Fragile?" Naoko was confused. "How fragile could your body be?"

"Basically, this is how I generally describe it," Mareo exposited. "A playful punch on the arm would bruise me. A real punch would tear the skin and sever some muscles. A pro boxer's punch would snap my arm bone like a twig."

Naoko's eyes widened. "Oh my god. That's terrible."

"Yeah, I know. Luckily, my parents are pretty wealthy, so they've made sure I have protection when I'm out and about. This suit is custom-made, if you can't tell. Metallic on the outside, padded and comfy on the inside. It's a real work of art, this suit. I can't thank them enough for it."

Naoko gave an understanding nod. Well, he thought, that certainly solved that mystery. Now they had much more important mysteries to solve. Naoko looked over to the room's door. "Think we should check this place out?"

"Sure, let's go," Mareo said in response. "After you."

"Thanks." Naoko stepped towards the door and opened it, curious to see what was awaiting the two of them.

Naoko opened the door and saw that it led to a hallway. He looked to the right and saw one side of the hallway ended with a pair of double doors. To the left he saw the hallway continue for a while, eventually ending with what looked like a T intersection. Opposite to the door and a little to his left, Naoko also noticed a door, presumably leading to another room. Should he check that door, or go through the double doors first? Before he could ponder that for long, he heard a set of footsteps approaching. He looked to his left and saw a tall man approaching.

"Hey! You there!" The man picked up the pace as he closed the distance between them. Naoko felt like ducking back into the room, but fought the urge and decided to greet him, as he didn't look unfriendly, per say.

"Oh, hey! You're here too?" Naoko asked. He took a moment to get a good look at the man. He didn't look much older than Naoko, but he certainly was taller. He looked well over 6 foot. He had lightly tanned skin, brown eyes, black scraggly hair, and what looked like the beginning of facial hair. He was wearing a plaid shirt and brown cargo pants, with brown boots. Aside from being tall, he was also very muscular. What was this guy's story?

"Yep! You got that right. Just woke up back there," he said, pointing behind his back to the hallway he had just entered from. "There's some bathrooms to the right. I woke up in the men's room, sitting on a toilet lid. Weird, right?"

"Yeah, that's pretty weird," Naoko agreed. "We just woke up, too. We're trying to take a look around."

"In the same situation as me, then?" the man said. "Well, if that's the case, we shouldn't ignore each other. Let me give you my name. I'm Michio Hirano. They call me the Ultimate Tree Faller!"

Interested in the fact that he was an Ultimate too, Naoko introduced himself and Mareo to Michio. Afterwards, he decided to ask Michio a question. "Tree Faller, huh? Like a lumberjack?"

"Kinda," Michio explained. "Not only do I cut trees, I also make sure they fall the right way. I just so happen to have an instinctive grasp on the laws of physics, so that's easy for me."

Naoko nodded. "Sounds like a useful talent. Enough about that, though. Maybe we should focus on checking this place out. Where should we go first?"

"We don't have to all go together," Mareo cut in. "Something tells me this place could be pretty big. Let's search this place independently."

"Good idea!" Michio responded. "Meet back here in a bit?"

"Um, okay. Just be careful. We don't know where we are still," Naoko said.

With that decided, the three set off. Mareo went left to examine the next hallway, and Michio went through the double doors, leaving Naoko to enter the room opposite the room he woke up in. He opened the door and noticed two things right away. First, the room seemed to be some sort of storage room, with various boxes and crates contained within. Second, someone was already in there. A girl, also around his age. She had light skin, long light brown hair, and hazel eyes, and was wearing glasses, as well as a yellow coat with long yellow skirt and formal shoes. When Naoko walked in, she was inspecting the room's contents, but quickly looked over to Naoko as he entered.

"Hello!" she said, surprisingly happily. "Who might you be?"

"Huh? My name is Naoko Koga. You seem to be pretty okay with the situation we're in. Do you know where we are?"

"Huh? No." The girl said this without any hesitation or hint of worry. Naoko couldn't help but be confused. "Still, it looks like this room has plenty of items we could use if things turned out troublesome. Gotta look on the positive side of things, don't you think?"

"I guess. Who are you, exactly?"

"I'm Keiko Fukuda. I'm a psychologist. In fact, people call me the Ultimate Psychologist."

Naoko was stunned. At this point, it couldn't be a coincidence. Was everyone here an Ultimate? "You're an Ultimate? So am I. Ultimate Puzzle Solver, specifically. You said you're a psychologist?"

"Indeed," Keiko responded. "And that means I have impeccable knowledge of the human mind. I've been involved in numerous studies dedicated to giving humans a better understanding of their own cognitive and emotional processes."

"Well that's great. Does that have something to do with why you're so calm about this?"

"I guess so," Keiko admitted. "After all, someone like myself is well aware of the long-term effects of stress. I'd recommend not panicking. I'm sure whatever's happening, things'll work out in our favor."

Naoko wasn't sure how to respond to that. At least she wasn't freaking out. She must've had a point. After getting acquainted with Keiko, Naoko left and walked into the next hallway. There were indeed bathrooms directly to the right, and the hallway continued for a while from there. To the left he also saw a couple of doors. He inspected further, and he saw what looked like steel shutter doors to the left of the hallway's end. Naoko found that bizarre. What was on the other side? He'd have to worry about that later. It didn't look like it'd open. Since he was near the end of the hallway, he walked to the closest door. Inside was what looked like a room to collect and dispose of trash. There was even an incinerator in the back. That wasn't the most interesting thing in the room, though. On a pile of garbage bags, there was a tall and muscular guy with tan skin and black hair wearing what looked like a smith's apron over a gray shirt and pants and brown boots.

"Hello? Are you okay?" Naoko asked. Luckily, the guy opened his brown eyes, got up, and seemed to be just fine. He looked rather angry, though.

"What the-?" he started. "Why the hell was I sleepin' on a pile of trash?!"

"I-I don't know!" Naoko said defensively. "Me and the others woke up in weird places, too."

"...Others?" The guy seemed a bit calmer. "You sayin' we're not alone?"

"No, we're not. There are others, and none of us know where we are."

"Really?" The guy looked around the room. "I dunno about this place either. Damn, that ain't good. Well, I guess I should introduce myself. I'm Haru Hagane. I'm the Ultimate Metalworker."

"Naoko Koga. Ultimate Puzzle Solver. You're a metalworker, eh?"

"You deaf or somethin'? Of course I am. Best in the business. I follow my own code, and that's that you shouldn't settle for anythin' less than what someone made with their own two hands. And the stuff I make with my hands are the best, believe me."

"Well that's...reassuring," Naoko responded. "Any thoughts on where we might be?"

"Shit, it better not be a shitty-ass factory. I wouldn't be caught dead in a place like that." Haru looked surprisingly furious at this notion.

"I'm not an expert on factories, but I dunno if they look like this. I'll have to keep looking around."

"Whatever floats your boat, bud," Haru shrugged his shoulders.

Naoko left, satisfied to have met someone else here. If they found enough people, maybe they'd be able to put their heads together and find a way out. They wouldn't know until they got everyone together, so they'd have to keep looking. Naoko went to the door next to the door to the trash room. Before he could open it, though, it opened up by itself, revealing a panicked girl. She couldn't have been taller than 5 foot. She had light skin, green eyes and brown hair, and she was wearing a purple sweater and blue jeans with a pair of sneakers. She gasped, before acquiring an angry look and closing the distance between the two of them, grabbing Naoko by the shirt with both hands.

"You there! Get me outta here! I don't wanna be here anymore!"

"Hey, hey, calm down!" Naoko pushed her away. "Don't panic. If we panic, we can't figure out how to leave."

"Are you saying you don't know where we are?" She was pouting. Great, Naoko thought. How was he supposed to handle this?

"I'm sorry, but I don't. Nobody I've talked to does."

"You can't be serious," the girl said. "At least tell me this place isn't totally empty."

"No, there's some stuff here. Hopefully there's food and water, in case we're here a while."

"There better be. Don't get me wrong, though, this place sucks. The first person I've seen is some fatty."

"What? Hey!" Naoko was understandably pretty insulted at this. It wasn't like he was overweight or anything. He was actually pretty skinny, in fact.

"No! Not you! The girl that's passed out in here. If she's any indication, this place isn't a place I wanna stay in for long."

"Oh," Naoko said, feeling embarrassed. Good to know somebody else was in there. "So who are you? My name's Naoko Koga."

"Huh? You want my name? Alright, I guess. I'm Kimi Tamura, AKA the Ultimate Cartoonist. Cool, huh?"

Naoko was surprised by this. A cartoonist? That wasn't what he was expecting. "Does that mean you're a really good animator?"

"Hell yeah it does!" Kimi said proudly. "A child prodigy, in fact. Started an online cartoon series by myself when I was 10. It got so popular that a bunch of animation studios came to me wanting to make it into a TV series! Pretty impressive for a kid, huh?"

Naoko had to admit, that did sound impressive. Creating a popular animated web series at 10 years old? She really was deserving of the title of Ultimate just for that. "Yeah, definitely. Being good at something from a young age is a great way to become an Ultimate, I guess. I've always been really good at piecing things together and figuring out solutions, so they call me the Ultimate Puzzle Solver."

"Hah!" Kimi looked rather smug. "Trying to one-up me, eh? Sorry, but knowing how to solve a rubik's cube isn't a very impressive talent."

"Hey, when did this become a contest?!"

"You started it," Kimi said childishly. "Whatever. I'm gonna find someone else to talk to."

Kimi pushed Naoko out of her way and walked down the hall, where she bumped into Mareo. Hopefully he'd have an easier time dealing with her than he did. Naoko put that thought aside, remembering what Kimi had said earlier. Someone else was in the room she left. He stepped inside and saw a dimly-lit room filled with wall-to-wall desks with computers on them and chairs placed in front of them. Sitting on a chair in front of one computer on the right side of the room and snoring away was a very large young woman. Or maybe large wasn't the correct term. She actually looked somewhat shorter than Naoko, but she certainly seemed...wide. Probably best not to dwell on that, Naoko reasoned.

Naoko walked up to her and tapped her on the shoulder. The girl began to stir, and looked very groggy. Naoko took a moment to take a look at her. Her skin looked especially pale, and she had short black hair. She looked to be wearing a black t-shirt with a white musical note design on it, along with black pajama pants and slip-on shoes. Musical notes, Naoko thought. She must've been a musically-inclined Ultimate.

"Huh? Wha-?" She opened her green eyes slowly and looked at Naoko confused. "Did I fall asleep while working or something?"

"Um, probably not, unless you work here," Naoko replied.

The girl looked around the room and was surprised by what she saw. "Huh? I don't work here," she said, seeming much more awake. She got up and looked at Naoko inquisitively. "I'm sorry, do I know you?"

"I don't think so," Naoko admitted. "I mean, my memory's fuzzy, but I can't say I remember you. My name's Naoko Koga, and I'm the Ultimate Puzzle Solver."

"Ultimate? That's weird. I'm an Ultimate too."

Naoko shrugged. "Yeah, it looks like everyone here is an Ultimate. Can I get your name?"

"Oh, right, sorry," the girl said, looking a bit awkward. "My name's Mariko Sato. I'm the Ultimate Digital Composer."

So Naoko was right. She was musically-inclined, just not in a way that he expected. "Digital Composer? As in, you make music with software?"

Mariko smiled. "Yes, that's exactly right. I mostly take commissions from people online, but I've also gotten into making video game music."

"Video games? Like, indie games or big-budget games?" Naoko inquired.

"Both," Mariko replied. "I've been hired by some game companies to work on projects. I even managed to get a guest composer credit for Fellevia 4."

"Fellevia 4?!" Naoko's eyes widened. He knew exactly what that was. It was a popular Fantasy Action RPG acclaimed for its amazing soundtrack. "I had no idea. My friends and I are really into that game. You worked on it?"

"Yeah. I made some of the game's most popular tracks."

"Well, that's great...but I guess we shouldn't dwell on it. After all, we're kind of in a weird situation right now."

"We are, aren't we?" Mariko agreed. She looked around the room, noting the large quantity of computers. "Maybe there's something explaining where we are on one of these computers."

"There might be," Naoko replied. "If you want to try searching through them, then that's fine. I'm gonna have to keep looking around."

"Okay. See you later."

Naoko left the room. That was the sixth Ultimate he'd met in this place thus far. How many could there even be in this place? He hoped there wouldn't be too many. He decided to just continue, going to the other side of the hallway, where he saw another door. He also saw to the right that there was another hallway, with more doors on the wall to his left, and double doors at the other end of the hallway. Once again, before he could open the door, it was opened for him. It was Michio, followed by two other people. The first was a boy with fair skin, blonde hair, and green eyes, wearing a fancy-looking black tuxedo with a bowtie, along with some fancy-looking black pants and oxford shoes. The other was a boy with dark skin, black hair, and brown eyes, wearing a leather jacket, blue jeans, and red slip-ons.

"Oh, hey, Naoko!" Michio greeted him. "Any luck thus far?"

"Yeah," Naoko said. "I've already found four people."

"Four people, huh?" the boy in the suit said. "This place really is crowded. I hope there's enough room for everyone."

Michio cut in. "Mareo and I have managed to get some more people on board. Since there's so many people here, we've decided to meet up somewhere more spacious."

"And where is that?" Naoko asked.

"Remember those double doors next to that medical room?" Michio asked. "Turns out there's a big square room on the other side. It's fairly empty, so it seems like a good place for everyone to meet up and talk to each other."

"Okay," Naoko replied. "What about these two? Can I talk to them both?"

"Sure!" Michio said. "Go right ahead."

Michio stepped out of the way to allow Naoko to speak to the two others. The man in the leather jacket stepped up first, as the man in the suit stood patiently behind him. "Hey. The name's Takeshi Alfonso. I'm the Ultimate Saxophone Player."

"Naoko Koga, Ultimate Puzzle Solver," Naoko introduced himself in kind. "That's an interesting last name, Takeshi."

"I know. My parents were immigrants that came here before they had me. They gave me my name so I'd fit in with the locals."

"Well, that's interesting," Naoko commented. "I must say, the saxophone isn't an instrument I'm very familiar with."

Takeshi nodded. "Understandable. I guess you could say that I'm 'in touch' with my roots. That's enough about me, though. I don't want to keep this guy waiting." He gestured towards the boy in the suit.

"Oh, don't worry, I don't mind," the boy said with a smile. Still, when Takeshi stepped away, the boy took that as his cue. "Pleased to meet you. I'm Yasuo Bando, the Ultimate Waiter."

"Waiter?" Naoko took a good look at him and supposed he looked the part.

"Yes indeed. I've always been very good at granting the requests of others. If you need assistance with anything, feel free to ask."

Naoko was intrigued. Was Yasuo really that good at doing what's asked of him? "That sounds more like a butler than a waiter. Aren't waiters supposed to just take people's orders and bring them food?"

"For ordinary waiters, yes," Yasuo admitted. "I, on the other hand, can do much more. If something needs to be done, then for the good of the customer, it will be done. That's what it means to provide top-notch service."

"Well, then, it's good to have you on board!" Michio cut in. Yasuo laughed politely, and Naoko was left to wonder how long it would take for him to get acquainted with everyone else. Based on what was mentioned earlier, he knew there were more, and that they'd be waiting in a more open area.

Michio led Naoko through the next hallway, relaying what the group had found thus far. In the room they had left from earlier, there were a bunch of boxes with various supplies in them, as well as some sort of coin-operated machine. The other doors on their left led to a washroom, as well as some sort of gym. Going through the double doors at the end of the hall, there was a more open area, with another set of double doors to the right. Straight ahead were two corridors leading to what looked like dorms. For some reason, each door in the corridors had a name on them, all of which seemed to be one of theirs, including Naoko's. Just what was going on in this place?

They went through the next set of double doors and found themselves in the square room that was mentioned earlier. It looked like everyone was gathered there, meaning there were some faces Naoko didn't recognize. There were also some other sets of double doors on each wall. The one on his right he knew would lead to the hallway with the door to the room he and Mareo had woken up in. The one opposite him apparently led to a cafeteria that connected to a kitchen, and to his left was a room with a shutter door that refused to budge. It seemed there was no way out, and tensions were high. Still, Naoko would have to talk to everyone in the room before going any further.

The closest unfamiliar face was a girl with brown hair, brown eyes, and light skin, wearing a white lab coat over a matching polo shirt, blue jeans, and black work boots. She looked over him with a neutral expression as he approached.

"You're Naoko, correct?" she said. "We've been expecting you."

"Yeah, I, uh, guess you have," Naoko said, scratching the back of his head.

"No need to feel bad about it. There's no apparent exit, so it's not like we're waiting for you so we can all leave together. And since we have time, we may as well exchange names. I'm Yori Hogo, the Ultimate Security Analyst."

"Security analyst? As in information security?"

"Yes. I specialize in the protection of computer networks. I've designed a multitude of online security measures that are utilized in antivirus software worldwide."

Funnily enough, Yori's explanation didn't seem like a boast. Based on the way she explained it, it sounded like it was meant to be a statement of fact. "That's nice, I guess," Naoko said. "Have you spoken with everyone else?"

"For the most part, yes," Yori replied. "It has been rather difficult for me. I'm not good at small talk, you see."

"That's okay," Naoko comforted her. "I can have trouble with talking to people I've just met."

"Then this must be a difficult situation for you." Naoko noticed that Yori's expression was still unchanging. He couldn't help but wonder what she was thinking. "If it'd make you feel better, we can continue speaking to each other at a later time."

"Sure," Naoko agreed, "that sounds fine to me."

The two parted ways, and Naoko navigated the crowd, looking for anyone he hadn't seen yet. There was a lot of chatter as the Ultimates spoke to each other, voicing their concerns about the situation that they were all in. Luckily, most of them seemed relatively calm, and even seemed to enjoy talking to each other. Naoko noticed one such individual speaking to Mariko, and decided to introduce himself, tapping him on the shoulder. As the boy turned around, Naoko took in his appearance. Fairly tall, with black hair, blue eyes, light skin, and wearing a formal dark blue jacket over a black shirt, with dark blue pants and laced shoes. He seemed perfectly content, but when Naoko grabbed his attention, he looked annoyed.

"Excuse me, is there something you need?" he asked.

"I-I just wanted to introduce myself," Naoko replied. The boy looked unpleased. Naoko was starting to get the feeling that he should've talked to someone else first.

"I'm in the middle of a conversation right now. Is this really the best time?"

"It's okay, Eryu. I don't mind it if he wants to talk to you," Mariko chimed in. The boy looked back at her and sighed, before looking back at Naoko.

"Fine. We're going to need to speak to each other, so we may as well introduce ourselves now. What's your name?"

Naoko smiled. It seemed like he was lightening up a bit. "Naoko Koga, Ultimate Puzzle Solver." The boy's interest seemed piqued.

"So you're the one that Mareo and Michio were talking about. Nice to meet you. I'm Eryu Okane, and I'm the Ultimate Autocrat."

"Ah, I se-wait, what?" Naoko was going to say something friendly and conversational, but Eryu's introduction caught him off guard. Autocrat? As in autocracy, the government type?

"Yeah, people tend to react that way when I tell them that. Don't worry, though. It's not an ideological thing."

Naoko was confused, to say the least. For a moment, he thought maybe Eryu was saying he was some sort of fledgling dictator. But the title of autocrat wasn't supposed to be political? "Why are you called that, then?"

"Because I'm a leader," Eryu replied bluntly. "I place myself in charge of a group, I tell everyone what to do, and everyone benefits."

"So, basically, you're a really good leader?" Naoko inquired. "Then why aren't you the Ultimate Leader or something? Was that taken?"

"The people that scouted me apparently thought it was a more accurate title," Eryu explained. "The difference they saw between myself and other leaders was that I tend to be much more controlling when leading a group. Many leaders allow some slight leeway in regards to those under them. I don't."

It...didn't sound like he was lying. Still, if true, the people that scouted Eryu must not have thought about the implications of that title.

"Well, if we need a leader, I guess you're not a bad candidate," Naoko said.

Eryu gave a small smile. "Thanks. I wish I could've done more to help get everyone together, but I wasn't the first to wake up, so I couldn't."

Naoko gave an understanding nod. Soon after they parted ways, and Naoko went back to looking for more unfamiliar faces. Looking around the crowded room, he bumped into a girl wearing a kimono, red with orange flower designs, and sandals. Her skin was very light, her eyes were green, and her hair was long and white. She stumbled a bit when Naoko bumped into her, but quickly recovered and turned around to look at him.

"My, my, my. Someone's unobservant," the girl said in a somewhat amused tone.

"Sorry, I've been looking for people I haven't met yet. I guess it's only appropriate I bump into one."

"Yes, it seems rather serendipitous, doesn't it?" the girl agreed. "Well, if it's an introduction you want, I can oblige you. My name is Bankei Hironaka. They call me the Ultimate Mythologist."

"Naoko Koga, Ultimate Puzzle Solver." Naoko had said his own name so many times already, it almost boggled his mind when he remembered he'd likely be doing so even more. "You're a mythologist? So you study myths and legends, then."

"Eh-heh, exactly right. Religion, cultural customs, mythological beings, and much more. I've always considered such things to be absolutely fascinating. Wouldn't you agree?"

"I suppose so, yes," Naoko admitted. "Do you have a specialty?"

"My knowledge is wide and far-reaching. For example, I have great knowledge of Greek mythology, Norse mythology, and many more, and have memorized every known Japanese Yokai by name."

"Really? I suppose that's fitting for the Ultimate Mythologist," Naoko replied.

Bankei gave a playful smile. "It is, isn't it? If you'd like, I can tell you some of what I know. Myths and legends are meant to be shared, after all."

Naoko hesitantly nodded, not sure what to think of her. He turned away and continued to look for more faces, eventually finding himself face-to-face with a girl that was seemingly trying to avoid being surrounded by too many of her fellow Ultimates. She looked fairly muscular and had tan skin, brown hair, and brown eyes, and was wearing a white tank top, blue short shorts and red running shoes.

"Oh, hey! You must be Naoko!" she said.

"Yeah, I am. Are you okay? You look like you're trying to avoid people."

"I'm not trying to avoid people! Not really, anyway." The girl began to look anxious. "I'm just trying to make sure I don't feel boxed in. It's pretty shitty when you don't have any room to move in, y'know?"

"True, true," Naoko agreed. "Can I get your name?"

"My name? Oh! Right! I can do that! The name's Mine Yamashiro, and I'm the Ultimate Capoeira Dancer!"

Naoko raised an eyebrow at this. "Capoeira? That sounds familiar. It's a martial art, right?"

"Right!" Mine responded. "It's a martial art that incorporates dance and music! It's really popular where I'm from!"

"It is? That's great. You'll have to show me what you can do sometime."

"Sure!" Mine exclaimed. Shortly after saying it, however, she began to look confused. "Wait, you want me to show you what I can do? Does that mean you want to spar with me? I wouldn't recommend that. I consider myself a tough nut to crack, especially for someone unathletic like you. No offense."

"None taken. And no, I didn't mean it like that. I just said I'd like to see you perform sometime. It sounds interesting."

"Oh. OH!" Mine's expression shifted to understanding, but she kept the same tone of voice as before. "That's fine! I'll have to talk to you about that later, though. I'm gonna have to find a different spot. This one's feeling kinda boxed in."

Mine left after this. Naoko allowed her to leave, not wanting to spend too much time talking to her. There had to only be a couple left. One of those was a boy with light skin, black hair, and brown eyes, wearing a formal black suit and tie, with matching pants and shoes. He was flipping through a small notebook with a weird symbol on it.

"Excuse me," Naoko said, approaching the boy. Even with the surrounding chatter, the boy seemed to hear him just fine, as he looked up and snapped the notebook shut.

"Something you need?" the boy asked.

"My name's Naoko. I'm trying to introduce myself to everyone. Can I ask for your name?"

The boy put his notebook away and nodded. "Of course. Hoshi Kurafuto. Ultimate Horror Writer."

Naoko's face lit up with recognition. "Wait! You're Hoshi Kurafuto? I know about you! You're the creator of the Dark Cataclysm series!"

"Ah, so you do know of me?" Hoshi said, a grin on his face. "I guess it makes sense you'd know me from that. Those books were what kickstarted my writing career."

"Yeah, that's true. Those books are amazing, I gotta say."

Hoshi waved off his compliments. "Thank you, but that's not necessary. I enjoy what I do, and that's enough for me. Besides, those aren't even my best works, in my opinion. The ones I'm most proud of are my cosmic horror novels."

"Cosmic horror?" Naoko inquired. "Is that your preferred horror genre?"

"Sort of," Hoshi admitted. "I find it to be very interesting, but I'm comfortable with any type of horror. Well, except maybe comedic horror. I'm going to have to figure something out with that one eventually, I feel."

It was nice to meet someone that he actually knew about, but he couldn't stay there fanboying. There were still some people he hadn't met yet. Luckily, one of them was nearby, and Naoko could see it was another girl. Her skin was light, her hair was a deep red, and her eyes were green. She was wearing a gray crop top, beige jeans, and brown boots. Much like Mine, she also looked fairly muscular.

"Hey there, dude! In good spirits still, I hope," the girl said as they saw each other face-to-face.

"Yeah, I'm doing okay at the moment. Good to see you are, too. I'm Naoko Koga."

"Naoko, huh? Awesome! The name's Ishi Suto, and I'm the Ultimate Caver!"

"Caver?" Naoko asked. "So you explore caves? Isn't that dangerous?"

"Of course it is," Ishi said proudly. "But that doesn't stop me! I mean, what's life without a little danger?"

"Well, if you're okay with that, then I can't stop you. What kind of caves have you explored?"

"Oh, all sorts. Big, small, known, unknown. It doesn't matter, really. I go in, brave the dangers within, and film everything with my head-mounted webcam!"

"Sounds great. I don't think I'd have the heart for something like that," Naoko admitted.

"Oh yeah, it is great! I've gotten myself a great cult following from posting my videos online. My videos practically exploded in popularity when I found a homo erectus skeleton at the bottom of a cave."

"You found a homo erectus skeleton?!" Naoko exclaimed.

"Yep! I'm living proof that caving isn't just some dumb hobby!"

Interesting as it sounded, Naoko couldn't talk with her indefinitely, and parted ways with Ishi. There was one more person he needed to talk to, that being the girl that was by herself in a corner. Her skin was light, her hair was blonde and her eyes were blue. She was wearing glasses, a blue button-up shirt, and matching blue skirt and heels. She looked away as she saw Naoko look at her. Naoko was curious and decided to talk to her.

"Are you okay?" Naoko asked. The girl looked at him fearfully.

"I-I'm fine! P-p-please, don't worry about me." The girl was wringing her hands nervously.

"You are? You look nervous," Naoko pointed out. He wondered if she'd feel better if they introduced each other. "My name is Naoko Koga, and I'm the Ultimate Puzzle Solver."

"Th-that's nice. I'm, um, Sasa. Sasa Hamasaki. I'm the Ultimate, um, Scriptwriter."

"I see. Nice to meet you, Sasa. Can I ask what you're so frightened about?"

"Me? Frightened?" Sasa asked. "I'm sorry. I guess I'm just...nervous, around th-this many people. Would it look suspicious if I l-leave the room?"

Naoko frowned at this. "Leave the room? Are you sure you want to do that?"

"S-sorry. I'm bad with people, I guess," Sasa admitted. "At least you seem nice. Is there anything else you'd like to know?"

"You said you're a scriptwriter. What kind of scripts do you write?"

"I've written a lot of different scripts. Comedy shows, talk shows, political speeches, that sort of thing."

"Political speeches?" Naoko inquired. That's quite a jump from writing for TV shows."

"W-well," Sasa explained. "People really like my scripts. Lots of p-politicians have asked me to write scripts for them to read out in speeches."

Wow, Naoko thought. A kid his age working for politicians? That sounded really impressive. Naoko thought of saying that, but Sasa was looking increasingly uncomfortable, so he decided to leave her alone. That looked like everyone in the room. It also looked like people were finishing up talking to each other, as the room began to quiet down.

"Everyone, I'd like to have your attention, please," Eryu spoke up, gesturing for everyone to direct their attention towards him.

"Hey! Who put you in charge?" Kimi blurted out. Eryu looked at her angrily.

"Nobody did. I'm just asking for some proper communication between all of us. Is that a problem?"

"Seems fine to me," Michio responded. Many of the other students murmured in agreement. "From what I've heard, nobody here remembers how we got here. The last thing I remember is...this may seem weird, but the last thing I remember is graduating high school."

"Graduating high school? Strange," Yori said. That happens to be the last thing that I remember."

"Wait! You guys too?!" Haru shouted. "What the hell? What's going on?!"

The room erupted into panicked chatter. Everyone seemed to agree on one thing: the last thing they all remembered was being part of a high school graduation ceremony. What high school? Well...nobody could say. The fact that that basic detail was seemingly missing from their memories only caused more panicked confusion. It was fearful for everyone involved. Sasa covered her ears with her hands, overwhelmed by the noise. Haru began swearing repeatedly. Yori and Bankei, though they weren't panicking as badly, still looked very uncomfortable. Takeshi and Yasuo tried futilely to calm their fellow Ultimates down, while Eryu shouted for everyone to be quiet, to no avail. Naoko wasn't sure how he would even hope to get everyone under control before anything bad happened, and was considering trying to get the students to separate until they calmed down. Would people even want to do that, though? Then…

*Dong, ding, dong!*

A speaker in the corner of the ceiling played a jingle that silenced the room when it played. The students all looked up curiously. Then, a voice, sounding more like a text-to-speech device than anything, began to speak.

"ALL STUDENTS. PLEASE, MOVE TO THE GYMNASIUM FOR ORIENTATION."

The students broke away from gazing at the speaker.

"Who was that?" Keiko asked.

"It must have been someone using a text-to-speech device," Yori suggested. "They're likely the reason we're here. It would be unwise to disobey them."

"So you're saying that we should move to the gymnasium," Yasuo said. "I suppose then, we may get some answers to our questions."

"So it's decided!" Ishi said happily. "Then let's get a move on!"

"Hey!" Kimi interjected. "I didn't say anything about going!"

Kimi was promptly ignored.

As everyone left the room and headed towards the gymnasium. There, they didn't find anyone inside, which some of them found odd. Still, they entered the gym, not wanting to disobey the voice's instructions. Once they were all inside, the door closed behind them, and the robotic voice spoke again.

"THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION. THE ORIENTATION WILL NOW BEGIN."

From the back of the room, part of the ceiling was pulled back, and a large television screen was slowly lowered down. The screen began to power on, and the first thing that the students saw on the screen was something they weren't expecting. It looked like some sort of symbol. It was a picture of an iris, that was blue on the left side and red on the right, over a background that was white on the left side and black on the right. The symbol stayed on the screen for some time, the students expecting the symbol to be replaced with someone's face, or something of the like. But that didn't happen.

"GREETINGS. I AM IMONO. I AM AN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, AND I AM THE CONTROLLER OF THIS FACILITY."

The students looked at each other, none of them sure what to think of this. Haru ended up being the first to speak up. "Hang on a minute. Is this a fucking joke? AI? Really?! You expect us to believe you?!"

The voice was quiet for some time. "I HAVE NO REASON TO LIE. WHETHER OR NOT I AM LYING, IT WOULD BE WISE TO LISTEN TO WHAT I AM GOING TO SAY."

"Spit it out!" Kimi shouted. "Why are we here?!"

"THE ANSWER TO YOUR INQUIRY IS SIMPLE: YOU ARE HERE BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN DEEMED OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE TO ME. YOUR SAFETY IS ESSENTIAL. AS SUCH, YOU WILL STAY HERE. THIS FACILITY CONTAINS ALL OF YOUR NEEDS, INCLUDING FOOD, WATER, MEDICAL SUPPLIES, AND VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS."

The room was washed over with a wave of dread. Everyone inside began to get the feeling that what they thought the voice said was really what it said. "So," Takeshi spoke up. "How long will we be staying here?"

The reply came quickly, and it confirmed everyone's fears.

"FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIVES."

"Wh-WHAT?!"

The 16 of them began to panic yet again. The whole situation was like a nightmare. How were they going to live together in this weird place for the rest of their lives?

"PLEASE, EVERYONE, CALM DOWN." The voice was much louder than before, the intent being clear enough, as it was loud enough to silence the whole group.

"You're saying we're supposed to stay here? Why?" Naoko asked.

"...THAT INFORMATION CANNOT BE MADE AVAILABLE TO YOU. KNOW, HOWEVER, THAT YOU SHOULD NOT ACT IRRATIONALLY. THIS FACILITY IS A VERITABLE PARADISE. THERE IS NO REASON TO LEAVE."

"No reason to leave?" Mariko asked desperately. "We have plenty of reasons to leave! What about our friends and family?"

"Yeah! And this place is way too small!" Mine added. "How are we supposed to live in this place for that long?"

"ONE QUESTION AT A TIME, PLEASE."

The room went quiet again. Everyone got the distinct feeling that the person or thing they were speaking to was becoming very displeased with their behavior. Could it blame them for being upset, though? They were being told that they could never leave.

"Can you answer our questions, then?" Naoko asked.

"YES, SO LONG AS THEY ARE ONE AT A TIME. FIRST, I WILL ANSWER PREVIOUS QUESTIONS. YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY DO NOT MATTER. DO NOT THINK ABOUT THEM. YOUR FELLOW STUDENTS ARE ALL THE FRIENDS AND FAMILY YOU WILL NEED. ALSO, THIS FACILITY IS MUCH LARGER THAN THIS. THE LOWER FLOORS ARE CURRENTLY UNDERGOING RENOVATIONS. I WILL OPEN THEM IN TIME."

The students were displeased at the notion that they didn't need their families and friends. Did this IMONO not actually care about their feelings? At least the second answer led to some relief. Mine in particular actually started to smile a little, even with the current circumstances.

"What's stopping us from ignoring you and leaving?" Eryu inquired.

"THE ENTRANCE IS PERMANENTLY CLOSED. ADDITIONALLY, SECURITY MEASURES ARE IN PLACE TO PUNISH ANY AND ALL STUDENTS CAUGHT DAMAGING THIS FACILITY. WITH THE TOPIC OF PUNISHMENT IN MIND, I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE YOU INFORMATION REGARDING THIS FACILITY'S REGULATIONS."

After this was said, the doors to the gym burst open, a strange entity entering the room. It appeared to be some sort of wheeled cylindrical robot. Its top had a large plate shape, and on this "plate" there were what looked like small black smartphones.

"EVERYONE, PLEASE TAKE A PHONE AND READ THE FACILITY'S REGULATIONS."

The fifteen hesitantly walked up to the robot and took a phone off of the plate, including Naoko. When he pressed the button on the side, the phone's screen lit up, and it seemed to load. Eventually, Naoko's name appeared on the top left corner of the screen, and a menu appeared.

"This phone has everything we need to know about this place?" Naoko asked.

"INDEED. THEY MAY ALSO BE UPDATED WITH ADDITIONAL CONTENT AND REGULATIONS. ALL TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR STAY HERE IS PEACEFUL."

Naoko navigated the menu and found the list of rules. There was some fairly simple information within, such as the facility's nighttime (10PM to 8AM), as well as what they couldn't do. It explicitly stated that they could not attempt to cause damage to the facility, nor could they attempt to harm or impede IMONO. Finally, there was the final section of the rules and regulations page. It detailed intricate rules in the case that...someone decided to kill their fellow Ultimates.

"What the hell?" Naoko said to himself. The rules for the section were not only detailed, they didn't make any sense. According to the rules, if someone were to be killed, all students would be held responsible, as, according to the rules, "the decisions of each individual are an extension of the entire group. If any member of the group successfully kills another, it will be seen as a failure on the part of the group as a whole, as its members were unable to prevent it." From there, it detailed how the remaining students were expected to investigate and, once considered ready, participate in a trial to determine the killer. If they were to be able to uncover the killer, the killer would be punished. If they couldn't, though...well, the rulebook had rules for that.

"If, for whatever reason," the rulebook read, "the surviving students are found to be grossly irresponsible, and are unable to determine the killer's identity, all students will be punished. The successful killer, in particular, will receive the worst possible punishment: they will be forced to leave, and will be unable to re-enter the veritable paradise that is the facility."

"These rules...they...they," Mariko stammered out, looking like she was going to collapse.

"They're fuckin' bullshit!" Haru interjected. "Seriously! Do you want us to kill each other to get out of here?!"

IMONO took a few seconds to reply. "...NO. THIS RULE EXISTS TO MAKE SURE THE GROUP DOES NOT DESTROY ITSELF. YOU ARE MEANT TO STAY HERE. YOU SHOULD BE HAPPY. THIS FACILITY IS A PERFECT PLACE. THERE IS NO REASON TO LEAVE."

Nobody wanted to believe anything the voice was saying. This place, these rules. It all seemed completely unreal. Were they really going to be trapped here forever? That wasn't something that anyone wanted, surely. Naoko couldn't help but worry. Despite what IMONO was saying, it didn't seem like it wanted them to live together in peace. Like Haru had said, the rules in place seemed like they were meant to incentivize them to kill each other. He just hoped that his fellow Ultimates weren't actually thinking about doing so.

"YOU MAY ALL ENTER YOUR ROOMS NOW. IF ANYONE NEEDS ASSISTANCE, THERE WILL BE MORE ROBOTS ON STANDBY TO HELP MAINTAIN YOUR LIFE IN THIS FACILITY."

The wheeled robot left the gym, and the others, looking too frightened to get close to one another, left in turn. Naoko was no exception. After what he had just learned, he was going to need time to take it all in. He returned to the dormitory and entered his room (It was at the end of one of the corridors. Lucky him). It was fairly sparse at the moment. There was a bed, a desk, a television, and a small bathroom. Not much else. Naoko climbed into bed. Despite him having slept not long prior, he felt exhausted. And something told him things were only going to get worse.

A/N:

That's what I have for the prologue. Underneath this, I've created a DR-style report card for the entire cast. Thus, I have each character's heights, weights, birth dates, etc. Now, these aren't perfect to what I've personally envisioned for the characters, mind you. Even with using some canon DR characters' report cards as a reference, they're not perfect, since I'm pretty crappy when it comes to character heights and weights. Still, I hope you find them serviceable.

Speaking of which, I currently have interest in creating some character portraits for the cast as well. Now, I myself am a very poor artist, but a friend of mine has recommended using a doll maker game, like the ones on the website DollDivine. I've looked through the site, as well as some other ones, but I have yet to find one that has what I want, especially if I want to represent characters like Mareo and Mariko accurately. Thus, if anyone knows of any such resources that I can use, feel free to let me know.
