Should I be starting a new story? Probably not. Am I? Definitely! I had this idea and I liked it, and then I have an idea for our main character and now we have this. I plan on this being a darker story, so cats will probably die. I want to have fun with it!

Clans in here work differently. Toms are expected to hunt and fight and serve the roles of traditional warriors while she-cats are expected to mostly have and rear kits. They are still taught to fight for self-defense, but that's it.

Toms also often have multiple mates, to maximize the number of kits. This is due to a plague that wiped out the original five clans. The rule was implemented and stuck around. Medicine cats still cannot have kits. Queens who have more and larger litters are more respected. Things are greatly centered on family, with older families being valued. Setting up arranged mates is definitely done.

So yeah, feel free to submit some OCs! I think this twisted world will be fun!

"Mother, why do I want to fight-"

"Not this again Featherpaw," Birchtuft watched her only daughter with a deep sigh. She didn't know when Silverclaw would be back. She looked at her paws and wondered how she could explain this.

"Feather, darling," she whispered, "That is not your place. Starclan sent the Great Plague for a reason. You remember the story of how the river flooded, the thunder crashed, the wind howled, and the shadows lengthened, and the sky fell?"

"Yes, and then Meadowstar and Branchstar led the clans to our new home," the apprentice huffed, "Everyone knows that." She half-heartedly kicked a stone, "The nursery is just so stuffy."

"And it is your place," Birchtuft frowned, "It is every queen's place. We are matched and supposed to provide for the clan."

"Then why can't I do that by catching prey, or… I don't know, defending the borders?" Featherpaw narrowed her eyes. She had every bit of her father's attitude.

"That's a tom's job," Birchtuft rolled her eyes, "Look at your elegant figure, and dainty paws. You shouldn't want to dirty them!"

"But-"

"No buts," Birchtuft shook her head, "You're my only daughter, Featherpaw, and a beautiful she-cat. You'll make a tom very happy someday!"

She wished she'd been able to provide more kits to Silverclaw, like his other mates. But the cold season had been too harsh. Now all she had was her soft, delicate Featherpaw.

"Mother, were you happy when you were paired with Father?" Featherpaw asked, "Or… was there someone else you had in mind?"

"I believe I was lucky," Birchtuft shook her head, her response immediate, "Silverclaw is a very respected warrior. He's trained many apprentices, and he is strong."

"He's also old-"

"And so am I," the white queen chuckled, amused, "I was his first mate, after Rainsplash. The poor thing passed on giving birth to their first litter. None of the kits made it either." She saw Featherpaw wince.

"Such is the sacrifice of a queen," Birchtuft whispered, "We may not give our lives up in battle, as you seem so keen on doing. But we do give our lives for this clan. We provide the next generation, and what greater responsibility is there then that?"

Featherpaw's shoulders fell. Birchtuft hit her with her tail and she immediately straightened her back. "A proper queen does not slouch."

"But Mother-"

"Or groan."

"Sorry," Featherpaw mumbled and shuffled her paws.

Birchtuft let out a sigh. "Featherpaw, you are my only daughter. You must behave for our family. I want to hear no more nonsense about this battle training."

"Yes Mother," her daughter sighed, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend."

"You don't offend me, I just want you to know your place," Birchtuft dipped her head, "So you don't get in trouble. Your actions reflect on the family."

"I know," Featherpaw nodded. Birchtuft saw another apprentice come in and watched as Featherpaw ducked into her side, ever the shy one.

She let out a light laugh and wrapped her tail around her daughter. "How about I tell you the story of the Great Plague?" she whispered to her daughter. Featherpaw nodded, too nervous to say no.

"There was a great storm, water rising up and eating cats. Lightning lit fires in the great forests the clans made their homes in, burning those who did not heed the warnings the flames whispered," she murmured, watching Featherpaw's eyes light up in fear. She cracked a smile. A healthy dose of fear would serve her daughter well.

"Even as the storm purged the clans, Starclan was not done," she twitched her tail, seeing Featherpaw enraptured, "Disease swept the clans, and most cats perished."

"It was the end of times, or so we thought. Then Meadowstar, one of the last surviving leaders, and his mate had a great litter of kits. Five, just like the five clans. He named them after them, seeing it as a sign of his ruling."

"Oh yeah, and Skystar went on to found Forestclan," Featherpaw beamed, "I love that story!"

"Yes, I know," Birchtuft smiled, "But that's not the story I am telling. We are focused on Meadowstar. To rebuild the clans, he knew he needed more cats. So he decided to protect what little she-cats were left. Due to his loyalty to defending what was left of the clans, Starclan foretold that each mate of Meadowstar would have bountiful litters."

"So he had many mates," Featherpaw sighed, "I know the story!"

"We are precious," she explained, "Blessed by Starclan. Like Meadowstar and his mates, we make the clan strong. They are the model by which we live by."

"New blood was needed to rebuild the clans, and now new blood is needed to maintain them. You're to be a part of that."

"Yes, I know," Featherpaw dipped her head, "It is… my place."

She shivered as she said it.

Birchtuft placed her tail on her shoulder, trying to be comforting. "I know it's hard, at your age you have this desire to wander, to prove yourself."

"But trust me," she smiled, "When you have your first litter, you'll realize you don't need anything more."

"Really?" Featherpaw let out a small gasp.

"That's what happened with you," Birchtuft smiled, "My perfect little Feather." She felt Featherpaw purr against her side.

"I'm… nervous about being paired," Featherpaw admitted in a whisper, "What if I don't like the tom, or he's someone scary or-"

"Your feelings are normal," Birchtuft reassured her, "I had my reservations about Silverclaw when we first were together. He was a young warrior, and handsome, but he'd just lost a mate."

"He wouldn't speak to me for a while," she whispered, "But… eventually he came around. And then, we had you."

She remembered Silverclaw gazing at her, the bodies of their two other kits lying at her paws. The countless apologies on her lips. The fear that Featherpaw wouldn't make it, just like her littermates.

Her grip on her daughter tightened and Featherpaw let out a surprised yelp.

"Mother, what-"

"Nothing, darling," she purred, pushing the memories aside, "Silverclaw just had his own reservations about me as well. Now we're… happy."

She thought of the way he barely came in to look at her. It was normal. He was a busy warrior, and he had other kits. It was fine.

She was fine.

However, sometimes she saw Lionshine come in and smile at his family. With a twinkle in his eye, and a grin he would bring joy. Something would stir in her. A longing that she tried to push down.

Silverclaw was her mate.

(It wasn't her fault, many she-cats wanted to be paired to Lionshine.)

And if she had him, she wouldn't have her Featherpaw.

With a happy purr, she pressed her nose into her daughter's scruff, pausing when she found a burr.

"Featherpaw, you didn't do a good enough job grooming yourself!" she huffed, pulling it out distastefully, "You won't attract a decent tom looking like a prickle bush!"

Featherpaw stood still as her mother started to furiously groom her pelt.

She sighed and hoped Featherpaw wouldn't cause too much trouble in the future.
