"Yes?... Yes… Thanks for your report. I'll pass along the information right away."
Doctor Graham clicked "End Call" on her phone and looked over to Serizawa who sat opposite her on a helicopter, now mid-flight.
"The temple?" He asked.
She nodded. "The egg. It's becoming more active, sensei."
"Mm." He grumbled.
"Should I call for a transport, sensei?"
"No, it's all right. We have other matters to attend to." He said as he glanced out the window of the helicopter and watched Godzilla's spines gingerly slicing through the waters of the Pacific.
"You think he's going to notice?"
"I believe he already has."
"Why, sensei?"
"Take a look."
Doctor Graham leaned towards the window for a better angle on Godzilla, and she noted that his spines were flashing faintly at a rate of about one flash every seven seconds.
"Sensei, isn't that meant to be an intimidation display?"
"Not when there's nothing around to intimidate."
"But he can sense other Titans, right? Wouldn't they sense this as well?"
"Not necessarily, Vivian. Remember, the full reach of Gojira's senses are still open to speculation. And that's even truer for the others since we've only seen them in hibernation or stasis."
"I see."
"However, given that there are carvings of Gojira in the temple I believe there's a connection between him and whatever lies inside that egg."
"Could it be the moth that's on the other carvings?"
"It would make sense, and it is very possible."
"You think it could be something else?"
"There are other creatures in some of those carvings as well. The egg could belong to any of them. For all we know it could even belong to Gojira himself. However, I believe the moth is the most likely candidate given that it appears far more often through the temple."
"I understand, sensei."
"Do we have any recordings of the egg?"
"I believe so. They were supposed to send me something this morning. Let me check."
Doctor Graham brought out her tablet and started checking various messaging apps.
"Are you hoping to find anything specific, sensei?" She asked as she continued her search.
"Just testing a theory."
"Ah, here we are."
Doctor Graham opened a new email which contained an .mp4 file that was a total of 10 seconds long. In it, a massive egg inside the belly of an ancient temple in an undisclosed location almost immediately pulsed with blue light, then went dark. Seven seconds later, it pulsed again before the video ended. As Doctor Serizawa looked out the window towards Godzilla he timed the subtle flash of his spines at seven seconds.
"What do you think?"
Sitting back in his seat, he smiled. "I think this lends further credibility to the theory that Gojira and that egg are connected… It's fascinating. Don't you think?"
"Yes, sensei. What do you want to do about the egg?"
"Let's leave it be for now. But keep monitoring it. If anything changes I want to know the moment it happens."
"Yes, sensei." Doctor Graham replied as she typed out a response to the email asking for immediate updates on changes.
"Ling. How's Ilene?" Serizawa asked.
A young Chinese woman seated to his left on the opposite side of the helicopter, and previously looking out the other window, turned her head and smiled.
"She's keeping well."
She moved across the helicopter and looked out the window just in time to catch Godzilla's head breaching the water as he let out a roar which echoed across the ocean…
… And through the temple.
"Huh? What was that?" Asked a scientist in hazmat gear as he took notes while standing near the egg.
"Not sure. Finish your notes and let's get the hell outta here." Replied one of his colleagues.
No sooner had the tip of his pen touched the paper on the clipboard in his hands than the pair of them heard a faint high-pitched shriek echoing between the temple walls.
"… You heard that too, right?" Asked the scientist taking notes.
"Yeah, I did. C'mon, let's just get outta here. You can finish your notes once we're safe in the observation deck."
The pair rushed away from the egg and across the metallic bridge to the observation deck's air-tight door. Upon punching in a code on the panel, they were allowed through.
"What's wrong you two?" Asked a colleague in formal suit attire.
"Not sure. But we heard… Something."
"Hm. Well-"
"What did it sound like?" Came a female voice from the back of the room.
The men all turned and met the eyes of Doctor Ilene Chen, a Chinese scientist who bore the emblem of MONARCH on her coat.
"Ma'am. The first one was, weird. I can't even describe it that well. But it was almost like someone was screaming "ahh" mixed with white noise and a low rumble at the end. The second one was a high pitched cry. It almost sounded like a musical instrument, if I'm being honest. But not one I recognize." He said.
"The first call must have been Godzilla." She replied.
"Go-what? Ma'am?"
"You know, dude. Godzilla. The big lizard thing that killed those buggy creatures in San Francisco a couple years ago."
"Oooooh, that thing. But aren't Doctor Serizawa and Graham tracking him in the Pacific? How'd we hear him all the way from China? I mean, that's-"
"It's only a theory. But we believe the cries of Titans are capable of affecting human brain waves. That's why we can hear him despite the distance." Doctor Chen interrupted.
"Wait, seriously? How the hell would that even work?"
"We're still studying the phenomenon. But that's our working theory right now. As for the egg…" She walked around the desk in the back and up to the glass as she looked towards the egg as it pulsed once again with blue light. "… The second call you heard was likely the baby inside."
"You mean 'Titan,' don't you ma'am?"
"I meant what I said, Thomas."
"But-… Never mind." He replied.
Ilene watched the egg carefully as the light faded and reappeared seven seconds later. And a subtle smile spread across her lips as she closed her eyes.
Back on the helicopter, Ling closed her eyes as the vision of the egg entered her mind, and her own lips curled into a smile alongside her sister's as they felt their minds and hearts connecting in the moment.
"You seem to be in a good mood." Doctor Graham noted.
"I am." Ling replied as she looked back down at Godzilla.
"… Soon." She whispered.
"Eh?"
"Nothing, Doctor Graham." Ling replied as she went to sit back in her seat. "So, where's he headed?"
"He's likely on his way home." Serizawa replied.
"Did we ever figure out where exactly that is?" She asked.
"Not yet. Our sensors lose track of him beyond a certain depth. But I have a feeling it won't be long now before we locate it." He continued.
"Doctor Ling, have you and Doctor Irene made any progress on your research into the mythology of the moth's temple?" Doctor Graham asked.
"Nothing new, as yet. But we're still analyzing and translating the texts and images we've uncovered so far. And the picture has been made fairly clear."
"And what picture is that, if I may ask?"
"To the best we can determine, the temple was built specifically for her."
"Her?"
"Yes, Doctor Graham. Her… Mothra."
"Oh. Is that what you've decided to name it?"
"No, Doctor. It's what we know her name to be. I can't really explain further than that as I'm not sure I understand why we know this ourselves. But it's the truth."
"I see… Sensei. What do you make of it?"
"Ling's family has ancient roots. It would not surprise me if her ancestors had managed to find a way to connect to this Mothra in ways not previously documented, nor understood by the science of their age. And if so, the secret as to exactly what this connection is and how it works may have simply been lost to time."
"Ah, I think I understand. But, at the same time, Doctor Ling, if you could explain something else. What about Godzilla? Why do we see his spines flashing at the same pace as the egg?" Doctor Graham asked.
"I'm afraid I can't answer that question just yet, Doctor Graham." Ling said as she closed her eyes and clasped her hands together in front of her chest. "But I promise you this… Godzilla and Mothra have a bond that transcends the realms of science and logic."
"How do you know this, Doctor Ling? There's nothing in the temple to suggest that, is there?" Doctor Graham inquired.
"… Because Ilene and I do too." Ling whispered.
Down below, Godzilla roared once again. And the sound carried through Ling's mind to that of her sister in China who opened her eyes. The screech of Mothra once again emerged from the egg as its pulsing grew faster by a fraction of a second, and Ilene's smile widened.
