So while I didn't have a Nintendo Switch, I still watched a playthrough of Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

I noticed no one has made a Fecto Elfilis x OC fic, so with help from a co-writer on Discord, I stepped up to the task.

Granted, I have plenty of chapters on the docket, but they have yet to be beta read.

Disclaimer: Kirby belongs to Nintendo and HAL Laboratory.

Their flight touched down in Redgarica International Airport. Sokol Krasniki and his 20-year-old daughter Vesa took a bus to a hotel that was ten minutes from Lab Discovera. Before long, they arrived at the hotel, seeing all kinds of advertising on the way talking about the carnival, different products, and the scientific advancements they were making everyday. The hotel was rather clean and tidy, although not anything close to a 5-star. When Vesa and her father received a room key from the receptionist's desk, they took an elevator to the third floor and strolled past five rooms before stopping at the door leading to their reserved room.

When Vesa and her father set down their luggage, her eyes locked onto a gift basket set on one of the end tables with a small card in it. She plucked it out of the basket and sat down on the bed. She opened the card and took a moment to read the message:

"Thank you so much for volunteering! Hopefully this will be a step forward in the field of medicine. Your appointment is tomorrow at 8:00 AM. The goal is that over the next few months, we will devise a cure for your illness. We are happy to tell you we have a promising new avenue in which to approach your treatment. We thank you for supporting Lab Discovera and for helping us help you."

Vesa smiled softly as she set the card down, allowing her father to read it. During that time, Vesa opened her suitcase and rummaged through it for her pajamas. Sokol had a glance at the gift basket, which contained fancy chocolates, a few fresh fruits and a pamphlet explaining about the lab and what kind of work they did. The tightness of her father's shoulders and straight-backed posture made her pause with unpacking.

"Dad," she assured him, "I'm sure I'll pull through."

He turned and smiled, ruffling her hair as he took his shoes off for the night.

"Yes," Sokol nodded, "it's just so distant…and so cold."

After changing into her pajamas and climbing into bed, Vesa and her father exchanged good night wishes before they dozed off to sleep.

The following morning, Vesa and her father stood side-by-side outside the hotel. as the bus pulled into the roundabout of the hotel. Vesa had a single travel case, while the adult had a simple briefcase with her medical records. The insignia of the premier research facility, Lab Discovera, was front-and-center on the bus' head bumper, new patients seated in their rows with varying degrees of awareness. Bags loaded and crutches set, the duo entered the bus. As soon as they found their seats, the bus drove out of the hotel's roundabout.

After a long hour of ascending the mountain road, the bus arrived at the entrance to the lab. The doors on the bus opened and the passengers disembarked, some of them supporting others by lending a shoulder. A few researchers clad in lab coats waited outside to greet their guests. Many of them offered wheelchairs and crutches as if they were ready to assist the arriving patients.

"Welcome!" the head researcher greeted, "our preliminary results are quite promising, and we have faith that with these tests, modern science, and luck…a treatment is within reach. Thank you for coming. We aren't going to lie to you: none of you are guaranteed to make it. However, we are confident most of you will."

Some of the guests shuddered while others exchanged puzzled looks. Vesa and her father shared glances before they grasped each other's hands in a form of reassurance.

"We have the best researchers in their fields here," the head researcher continued, "the best help money can buy, and the highest tech equipment on the planet; supported in great part by the government. One thing we can guarantee: we'll give you the best care available."

The head researcher gestured to the building behind them.

"Right this way, please."

The researchers led the guests down the pavement and through the large automatic sliding doors. They didn't stop at the lobby as they all continued walking down the hall and into the large elevator. As everyone filed inside, Vesa quietly observed how advanced the facility was at that point. A glance at her father was enough for her to know he had similar thoughts. Once the last guest and a researcher stepped into the elevator, the door closed. The elevator made its descent into the lower floors before making a complete stop at the bottom floor. Hobbling down the hall, Vesa made brief glances through the large glass windows showing researchers hard at their work. The group of researchers led their guests through a pair of large sliding doors leading into a long room lined with large glass tubes. Doors stood next to each glass tube.

"At this point, we are going to need to have any family members say their good-byes," the lead scientist told them sadly, "before long, we'll be taking the subjects to their rooms and begin taking samples before starting the first attempt at treatment."

While the rest of the guests began searching for their rooms, Vesa followed her father until they found a door with Vesa's name engraved onto its plaque. Once the door slid open in front of them, they set foot inside. Setting down her luggage, Mr. Krasniki and his daughter scanned their surroundings, taking note of the tidy bed, a dresser with a mirror hanging above it, and a door leading to a small bathroom. He sighed and opened his bag, pulling out a binder containing her documents.

"Vesa," he told her, "when the doctors come in, show them your medical records. All right?"

"I will," she replied.

Sokol placed a kiss on his daughter's forehead.

"Good luck, Vesa," he told her, "qofsh i buzëqeshur."

Vesa smiled softly.

"Mirupafshim, baba," she replied.

Vesa gave her dad a hug for a brief moment. As soon as she released him from her embrace, he stepped outside the door, smiling sadly. Once she was alone, she checked the drawers, finding a hospital gown inside. After changing into the gown, she sat down on her bed and opened the binder, waiting until she heard a knock on the door. She set down the binder and raced to the door. She pressed on the adjacent button and the door slid open. Two scientists stood outside.

"Miss Vesa Krasniki?"

"Yes," Vesa replied.

"May we come in?" the second scientist requested.

Vesa nodded. She sat back down on her bed while the scientists grabbed chairs to sit across from her.

"Hello," the first scientist greeted, "I'm Doctor Michal and this is Doctor Roul. We are going to be working with you for the foreseeable future until a cure or treatment is developed. Currently, the plan is to take a blood sample from each patient and then we will start doing treatments."

"I-I understand," Vesa said.

"First off," Dr. Roul asked, "why don't we do a little briefing on your illness?"

"It's…Intermittent Physio-Forgo Sepsis," Vesa answered, "I was told it led to my muscles weakening, and that I get more easily…my father said I was imm-immuno…immunocompromised?"

"Alright, that's about what we expected. It's one of the main illnesses we hope to develop treatments for while we are he—"

Without warning, the building vibrated a little and Dr. Roul's smartphone went off.

"One moment," he grumbled, "I need to take this. Dr. Michal, could you take over? It's about Specimen ID-F86, apparently something just happened and I need to deal with it."

Vesa gave Dr. Roul a puzzled look as the doctor stormed out of the room.

"Should…I be worried?" Vesa paused.

"No, hopefully not," Dr. Michal assured her, "I'm not entirely sure I should tell you about this, but we also do other things here, mostly government research projects. Recently…well, we've been entrusted with a massive project. It shouldn't be anything to worry about; the room where the research is happening is well protected. Although…nothing has ever shaken the building like that before. But I wouldn't worry too much. The building is heavily fortified. Hopefully, the issue will be resolved quickly."

"Oh, all right," she sighed.

"Still," Dr. Michal insisted, "it's an unfortunate coincidence that the one issue happened now. I may be called to assist my colleagues shortly, so let me take a blood sample quickly and I'll leave you to look around the room a bit. There is a computer, plenty of books, and some board games you can play."

"And jigsaw puzzles?"

"Yeah, I think we might have some," Dr. Michal nodded, "I need to go find them, though. The pieces tend to get lost so we don't really have too many of them that are intact, but there are some."

Dr. Michal got a ping from his phone.

"Oh, it seems I need to go assist," he continued, "you can come with me, if you wish. We'll draw blood after we get there. Although, you'll need to keep what you see there classified, much like everything else. It should be covered by the NDA."

"O-Ok," Vesa nodded and stood to her feet, closing up the binder and grabbing a crutch from the wall.

Dr. Michal led Vesa out of the guest bedroom. They left the oblong room and walked briskly, but carefully down the hall. They set foot into another elevator, where the scientist pressed the bottom-left button among the many buttons indicating the depth of the lab.

"I'll be straight with you," Dr. Michal told her, "we did it."

"Huh?" Vesa tilted her head to the side.

"We discovered extraterrestrial life," the scientist continued, "or rather, one alien…a creature from beyond the stars. It's beyond anything we could've expected. I wanted to prepare you before we continue on."

Vesa couldn't help but shudder, clutching the binder to her chest.

"And," she blurted, "when did you meet…this alien?"

"As far as I recall," Dr. Michal clarified, "we had to capture it twenty-eight years ago. It has been quiet mostly, and it's rather intelligent. Personally, I'm against this whole thing. It's sentient life, and we're running experiments, keeping it trapped here. I don't like it, but there is nothing I can do. The government would never let it go, and if I were involved in its escape, they would come down hard on me, doing their best to ruin me. Despite my dislike of the situation, I need to comply, if only for the good things we're doing with what we learn."

Before either of them could continue the conversation, the elevator came to a complete stop. The doors slid open. Vesa and Dr. Michal swiftly walked down the long hallway. As they got closer to the door, Vesa could hear commotion and angry yelling up ahead. She tightened her grip on the binder and shifted her weight onto the crutch, alleviating the minimal pain in her legs. Soon enough, they stopped at the door. After waiting for a couple minutes, the door slid open.

Stepping inside the large lab, the first thing Vesa saw was…rather astounding. A large creature sat inside a large tank, hugging its arms to its chest as it shuddered in pain. She ignored the bickering from the other scientists as she examined the creature from a distance. Its torso and upper arms were slender. It curled its long hind legs underneath it. It tucked its large winglike ears inward and its bushy tail thrashed in agitation. Feelers on both sides of its face flexed inward and it fixated its eyes, a pattern of cyan and magenta irises, on the scientists. The antlers on its head reminded her of a deer.

What kind of vendetta did Redgarica's government have against a creature as majestic as this one?

Vesa snapped out of her thoughts and handed the binder to Dr. Michal.

"Here."

Upon cue, Dr. Michal plucked the binder from her hand.

"Ah," he said, "thank you. I'll look over these in a little bit. Unfortunately, it seems that something is going on that I need to be a part of. You can go sit down somewhere if you want."

While Dr. Michal hurried over to his colleagues to ask for an update on the situation, Vesa scanned the room before making her way to a chair with a padded flip arm. She set aside her crutches before sitting down. All she could do was wait for her own procedure.
