What would you do if you were told your pup had only 72 hours left to live?

Ryder is faced with this question when he takes the newly found Chase to the veterinarians, and learns about Chase's short amount of time left on this earth.

How will Chase spend his final days on Earth?

Is a miracle possible?

This is a side story to PAW Patrol: Rescue Force, and it is an expanded version of Chase's backstory. It serves as a partial explanation for the reasons why Chase has a strong disdain for Adventure City.

72 Hours Part One: Diagnosis

Chase whimpered as the human who had rescued him was pulled out of the room. "D-Don't leave!" Chase yelled, scared of what they might do to him if he wasn't there.

"It'll be okay, Chase, I'm just going to go outside for just a minute. Everyone else, don't touch him until I get back." Ryder ordered the vets. The animal doctor was about to protest, but a fiery glare from Ryder shut them up.

Ryder then walked out to speak with the head veterinarian, the metal door slamming shut. "Why couldn't you tell me whatever you want to tell me in there!? Look at him! He's so scared, he hasn't had good experiences with people before! Chase said his previous owner left him on the streets, he clearly has abandonment issues! We're lucky that he even trusted me enough to take him here!" Ryder hissed.

"Chase has only seventy two hours left to live." The vet cut in.

Ryder's face fell, he was crestfallen. "He… what!?" Ryder gasped.

"That dog is very sick, and he is only going to last for three more days." The veterinarian explained.

"...How!? Can't we do anything!?" Ryder protested.

The veterinarian shook her head no. "He's got a virus, he's extremely malnourished, and he's only just one year old. It'll be better if we just put him down. His chances of surviving are slim to none." The vet told Ryder.

She reached into her coat and pulled out a syringe. Instantly, Ryder knew she was going to do it here and now. "NO!" Ryder screamed at her.

"Calm down, step out of the way. I'm doing what's best for him." The vet sighed melancholically.

"You said there was a chance for him, that he could make it!" Ryder argued.

"No, I said his chances of surviving past seventy two hours were slim to none. That means his chance of living is infinitesimally small." She grumbled.

"Even if it's small, he has a chance! I'm not letting you take that chance away from him!" Ryder shouted defiantly.

Growling, the vet shoved Ryder out of the way and opened the door. The other vet saw the look in her eyes and immediately knew what was up. "Oh god dammit Marcie, I swear they're going to fire you for this! Can't you let a pet live out their last few days in peace and happiness?!" The other vet groaned, grabbing her and restraining her.

"I'M TRYING TO DO WHAT'S BEST FOR HIM!" The female veterinarian shouted out.

Ryder immediately picked up Chase and held him tightly. "Mister Penland, go! I'll email the bill to your uncle." The other vet yelled out.

Nodding in understanding, Ryder picked up Chase and carried him out of the veterinarian clinic in a hurry, hearing the yells and cries of the other animals inside of there. Katie's parents' animal clinic was much nicer and less crowded, and her parents were a lot less rude than some of those vets. Hopefully he could make Chase see that… if he even managed to last that long. "...They wanted to take me away from you, didn't they?" Chase whimpered as Ryder carried him out of the clinic. Ryder could only nod his head in response. "Why didn't you let them?" Chase wondered.

"...Why would I let them?" Ryder asked.

Chase had no response to that, he was only about a year old. "I'm not gonna last much longer, am I?" Chase questioned. Ryder stopped in his tracks. "Where did you get that idea, Chase?" Ryder inquired. "Mean coat woman said it to you." Chase answered, having heard their conversation through the door.

His hearing was a lot better than Ryder expected. "...I don't know, Chase. But I'm going to do my best to give you a fighting chance." Ryder replied.

"Thank you… Ryder." Chase whispered.
