A/N: Hello everyone! This is my first fanfiction ever (so it probably sucks!), especially this first chapter, which I hate for some reason, but don't know how to fix... but, uh, review and tell me what you think, I guess.
This story is set in my own weird headcanon-ish, so it's a mix of more or less everything, mainly: Satam, the classic games, and the OVA.
Also, I feel the need to say. This was heavily inspired by some other stories I've read on this site: "Broken" "Kidnapped" and "The Place of You" - Were the primary inspirations. So basically, read those. They're better than this.
Finally, warnings, yay!: torture, blood, graphic violence, and other delights!
With that all out of the way, enjoy!
Chapter 1: Captured
Moonlight shone through the window, lighting the small, cozy room. Outside, the branches of trees swayed peacefully as a gentle breeze swept past them. Peaceful, that's what it was, serene, even.
Peaceful, unlike Sonic's mind. The blue hedgehog lay on his bed, gazing at the ceiling. He couldn't sleep, and he had no idea why. Usually, when Sonic couldn't rest, it was because he was excited about something - or because he was nervous, but he rarely was, and as far as he knew, he had nothing to be excited about either. Really, Sonic wasn't even sure how he'd describe the feeling he had; thinking about it, though, he remembered a word Tails had used recently that fit perfectly - 'agitated,' Sonic was agitated.
As the hedgehog lay there, a familiar voice broke the silence, "Sonic?" Tails asked, standing in the doorway. His ears were drooped down, and his face was a mix of worry and tiredness.
"Tails? What are you doing up so late?" Sonic responded with confusion as he sat up.
"I could ask you the same thing, ya' know," Tails replied with a slight smile, though Sonic could tell by the fox's voice that something was troubling him.
"Fair, fair," Sonic said, raising his hands in a feigned surrender, "But really, is something wrong?"
"I..." The young fox spoke timidly, "I had a bad dream..." He lowered his head in embarrassment and his tails coiled behind him, "I was wondering if I could sleep in here tonight..."
"Of course you can, buddy," Sonic said as he moved over to make room on his bed. Tails started to walk closer, though as he did, Sonic noticed just how shaken up the young fox looked, and when he climbed into bed next to him, Sonic could feel Tails shivering. "Are you okay, pal?"
"I... I'm f- fine..." Tails said while holding back tears. Suddenly, he rolled over and hugged Sonic tightly.
The blue blur was stunned for a moment before embracing the now-crying fox, "It's okay, Tails," He started in a soothing tone, rubbing the fox's back in a calming manner, "It's okay. I'm here now." Gradually, Tails' sobbing lessened as his surrogate brother comforted him. "That must've been one heck of a nightmare to have shaken you up this bad. Huh, buddy?"
"Yeah..." Tails sniffled as he talked. He rubbed some tears from his eyes before he continued, "Y- you... you were c- captured by Robotnik, and he h- hurt you really b- badly. And... he said I'd n- never see you again..."
While listening to Tails' story, Sonic held him a bit tighter. When the fox finished, the cobalt hedgehog looked the young kitsune in his azure eyes with a warm smile, "Aww, you don't need to worry about that, kid," He said reassuringly, "Ol' egg-heads never gonna get me; after all, I'm Sonic the hedgehog!" He pointed at himself with his signature cocky grin.
"Y- you promise?"
"'Course I do, pal. Now, let's get some sleep."
"Sure," Tails said with a relieved smile, "Ya' know, Sonic, you're the best brother ever."
"And your the best lil' bro I could ever hope for!" Sonic said while ruffling the young fox's hair. "Good night, Tails."
"Good night, Sonic."
It only took a few moments for Tails to drift off to sleep, and when he did, it didn't take long for Sonic to join him.
The last good night either would have for a long while.
Today wasn't going as Sonic had hoped. Alarms blared while lasers shot past the young hero as he ran through the winding, metal corridors of one of Robotnik's bases. He turned down another hallway, only to skid to a stop when he saw the forty or so swat-bots that were seemingly waiting for him. Immediately, he doubled back, rolling into a spin as he headed back down the corridor, slamming into another group of robots at the end and sending them flying like bowling pins.
'All I wanted was to go on a simple run,' The blue hedgehog thought to himself with a roll of his eyes. He had woken up before Tails and still felt restless and even a little bored, so he had gone on one of his runs; it was just outside Green Hill that the blue blur spotted what looked to be one of Eggman's mining operations. Little did he know what a labyrinth he'd be walking right into. Still, it would feel wrong to find a new one of egg-head's lairs and not pay a visit. Plus, Sally's taught Sonic a thing or two about hacking the doctor's power generators, and now was as good a time as any to try it out himself.
As the blue hedgehog ran, smashing apart robots and automated turrets alike, he noticed the air becoming slightly warmer and the blast doors a bit thicker, a tell-tail sign he was approaching the reactor room. Sonic continued down the passage, seeing fewer defenses as he did, 'Strange, I didn't destroy all his robots, did I?' He thought, approaching a large metal door at the end of the hallway. The blue hero figured he'd have to spin-dash through it, but surprisingly the door slid open for him.
'Heh, must be my lucky day,' Sonic thought as he walked into the cavernous room. The ceiling was high and vaulted, meeting in the center of the room where a pillar of electricity flowed from top to bottom, control panels surrounding its base - the generator.
Just as Sonic entered, the door shut behind him, and a familiar laugh echoed throughout the room. Sure enough, Robotnik's hovercraft descended before the young hedgehog, the doctor himself wearing a particularly toothy grin. "Ahh, Sonic!" He started, "Looks like you've fallen straight into my trap."
Sonic rubbed his nose, "Yeah, yeah, whatever," He said, rolling his eyes, "Could you hurry it up a little? I kinda had stuff planned for today."
Robotnik groned then pressed a button. A hatch on the floor slid open, and an elevator lifted out a robotic version of Sonic. It was smaller and sleeker than the previous 'Silver Sonic' that the blue blur had destroyed. Plus, this new robot was the right color. It stood utterly still, almost statue-like. Its form would be lifeless; if not for the red glow of its 'eyes' and the faint whirring coming from the turbine in its chest.
"Really, egg-head? Another robot-hedgehog?" Sonic asked while placing his hands on his hips. "You know, you really need some new ideas."
"Cocky as always..." Robotnik muttered, "This new model is unlike any you've faced before, hedgehog! Faster, stronger, and smarter than all the others!" He declared while gesturing triumphantly at his creation.
"Didn't you say the same thing last time? Guess you need some new monologues too." Sonic snickered.
The doctor grumbled, "Alright then, rodent!" He snapped, "Let's see how long your attitude lasts! Metal Sonic, attack the pest!"
Before Sonic could say another word, the robot had taken flight and was headed right for him, talons outstretched. Sonic leaped to the side, barely dodging the robot which soared past. Metal quickly turned in air to face him, the plume of exhaust from its jet doubling in size as it slowed and changed direction, 'Too easy,' The blue hedgehog thought as he launched into a spin attack, hoping to catch to robot off guard. Instead, it grabbed him, using Sonic's momentum to fling him across the room and skidding along the floor. Sonic quickly recovered and took off running, Metal and Robotnik's hovercraft following close behind.
The two battled, blue and orange streaks of light, colliding with each other before breaking off for a brief recovery, then trading blows again. Though the exchanges were hardly equal, Sonic could barely make a scratch on the robot. He, on the other hand, was scraped up and bruised.
The fight continued. Eventually, Sonic managed to get the upper hand; he spun into the air before landing a hard kick on the robot's forehead, staggering it. Once on the ground, he continued the attack, landing a punch and a solid uppercut on the robot. The blue blur went in for another hit, but Metal shifted to the side, evading it, before launching forward and headbutting the cobalt hero. Sonic tried to recover, but the robot delivered a blow with its claws straight across the hedgehog's chest, creating a deep gash.
Sonic gasped in pain and stepped back, clutching his stomach with one hand. He glanced down briefly to see his glove was rapidly turning red with blood. Before he could act, the robot lunged forward again and grabbed the blue hedgehog's neck, lifting him off the ground.
Sonic tried to fight back, grasping its arm and kicking at the machine. Eventually, he managed to get a foothold on the robot's upper body, just below its chin. He pushed with his legs and arms as hard as he could, trying his best to break its hold, but to no avail. Its grip tightened, and Sonic struggled to breathe. He desperately punched at the robot, using the last of his strength. Slowly, his arms and legs fell limp; he didn't have the stamina to resist.
"That's enough, Metal. Drop him." Ordered Robotnik as his Egg-Mobile slowed to a stop.
Sonic felt the grip around his neck loosen considerably, his vision was blurry, but he saw the robot had looked toward the doctor, tilting its head slightly to the side in an almost confused manner.
"I said, drop him!" The doctor demanded, with annoyance in his voice. While his hovercraft landed and a ramp descended from its side.
The robot slowly looked back at Sonic. Staring at him before dropping him on the floor. The hedgehog fell to his knees, coughing and grabbing his neck.
"Immobilize him," Robotnik instructed, slowly stepping down the ramp from his vehicle and holding a small object in his hand.
With that, the robot's foot came down on Sonic's back. He groaned as pain shot through him, emanating from the gash on his chest, and again, he struggled for air. Thankfully though, it was much easier than when he was being choked.
"Let me go!" Sonic shouted as he lay there, thrashing about, trying to shake off his captor. In response, the robot pressed down harder.
"It's useless, hedgehog - you've lost." The doctor stated as he walked toward the trapped hero.
Sonic glanced up at him, "You haven't won yet, Eggman!" He tried to sound confident, but his voice sounded weak from the lack of air
"Oh, but I have!" The doctor replied with a cheery tone. To Sonic's growing horror, as Robotnik came closer, it became clear the thing in his hand was a needle. "After all, how will you get away now, rodent?"
"I..." Sonic's mind raced as his nemesis approached. He knew he needed to do something fast. He couldn't be captured, and he certainly wasn't gonna accept defeat.
"Hmm, what's that?" The doctor said with a wide grin, "The mighty 'Sonic the Hedgehog' finally has nothing to say?" Robotnik now stood over the young hedgehog. He flicked the end of the needle a few times, checking the liquid inside, before kneeling down and looking Sonic in the face. Sonic spit at him.
Robotnik's smile dropped away instantly, turning into a scowl of pure anger, "You little..." He growled while standing up, his voice filled with rage. "Metal," his grin returned slightly.
"Break his leg."
For a moment, the pressure on Sonic's chest was lifted. Then, the robot's foot slammed on Sonic's left leg, and a loud, sickening snap filled the air. Sonic screamed in agony, his eyes closed tightly, and he clenched his fists; he had been hurt before, badly hurt, and usually, he could handle it, but this was worse. Not just because of the pain but what it meant - he couldn't run, and he couldn't escape.
'This is bad...'
Suddenly, a hand grabbed his quills, and he felt a sharp pain in his neck. Sonic could feel the cold serum enter his bloodstream. He tried to hold his eyes open, but fatigue quickly overcame him.
'Really, really bad...'
Sonic's eyes slowly drifted closed, and a peaceful unconsciousness took hold.
