Miranda ignored Max skulking gleefully at the door and stared stonily at her visitor.
'So why are you here, Ms Himénez?'
'Oh, I've come to confess some very bad things.'
Miranda sighed and tried to keep her patience. But she could feel her eyes twitching and a second later, an exasperated eye roll. It didn't discourage Maria. Miranda supposed that there was something attractive in that smile. If you liked them cheeky. Miranda found cheeky people irritating. They were always so flashy. She should know, she worked with one of the most infuriating of them.
'I would thank you not to waste police time with false confessions.'
'Blondes can make me do that.'
Miranda tried not to rise to the bait. Max had been teasing her all week about the suspect she had handcuffed, only to be abruptly let go the next morning once her innocence had been proven. Max had let Miranda do the honours, uncharacteristically skulking to the side to watch her react to Maria's shameless flirting.
'You could have brought her breakfast as an apology. She'd do the same for you.'
He raised his eyebrows suggestively at the memory of the kind offer Maria had made just before her arrest.
Miranda glared and him and walked on in dignified silence until they got in the car.
'You could have asked to her bring me breakfast. I'm starving' he complained.
'She doesn't like you' muttered Miranda, walking right into the trap. She cursed herself when she saw Max's gleeful expression.
