Author's Note
This is part of a series. I suggest reading at least Mirabel's best friend and Casita Presents: Encanto. So, you wont be lost.
20 year old Mirabel was very happy she and Casita were in sync at the monument as she and Casita were able to catch Bel before she hit the ground.
She sighed and looked back up at the clearly in shock Casandra as she looked at her cousin Emelina.
"What?" Cas whispered as she looked at the images Emelina had brought her.
Unlike Tio Bruno's future visions that were usually projected out for people to see and left behind the green slab of glass for people to see Emelina's visions of the past were internal, only she saw them, and and would have to draw them herself.
So Cas was holding several pictures in shock.
Mirabel bounced baby Bel as she whined reaching for her mother but Cas wasn't paying attention, which was all the red flags in the world something was wrong. Cas never ignored any of her children. But then again Cas isn't one to let her children fall either so something was definitely wrong.
Emelina looked sadly at Mirabel, "I had a vision. One of the involuntary ones. It was about Tia….It was about Hannah Jameson…..Cas' mother."
Oh. Oh no.
Mirabel leaned over to look at the drawings. It was a woman sick in a bed with people around her. She was surrounded by worried looking people. Mirabel had only seen pictures of the woman once, but she still recognized the woman in the bed as Cas' mother,
"I think she's dying," Emelina explained in a soft voice.
The room seemed even more silent and still than before. It made Bel uncomfortable as she squirmed around still reaching for Cas to hold her.
Cas didn't reach back as she looked at some other of the drawings, Hannah crying in an older woman's arms still in the bed, some kids probably around 10 hugging Hannah and crying, an latin looking woman looking sad along with 2 couples, and a sign outside of a building that read UCSF Medical Center.
"She's dying…." Cas whispered in shock, "You can only see things have already happened. She could already be dead by now."
Emelina shook her head, "I don't think so. It seemed recent, I think she has gotten very sick."
Cas just looked brokenly at the pictures before turning to leave the living room.
"Cas…." Mirabel started to say.
"Not now," Cas cut off as she ran up the stairs and slammed her room door shut.
Bel whined as her mother left the room leaving her.
Mirabel shushed the toddler and looked at Emelina.
Emelina looked incredibly guilty, "I thought she should know first. Before I told Jaime and Mateo."
Mirabel's face scrunch up, "Don't tell them yet. Cas and Abuela Mirabel probably need to decide how to tell them."
Emelina nodded at that after some thought. Mateo had just turned 9 and Jaime while 17 he was still very much a kid. It's hard for Mirabel to think of Cas as a "real" adult either but she was 21 and the mother of three toddlers so….
Mirabel just sighed and looked down at Bel as she whined a little again,
"It's okay Belita," Mirabel cooed at her great granddaughter, "Your Mama should be home soon."
…..
Eventually Abuela Mirabel and Gabriela came home with Bel's siblings, Marisol and Marcial.
The kids were giggling and happy unlike the very upset Bel who reached for Gabriela as soon as she got home. Gabriela looked concerned at her youngest daughter and handed Marcial to Abuela Mirabel as well and went over to take the child.
"Little Mirabel what's wrong?" Gabriela asked Bel as she took her trying to calm her crying.
Abuela Mirabel walked over to her younger self and Mira took Marisol from her, "Where is Casandra?"
"About that…."
….
Cas looked down at the picture she had in her hands. The picture she kept hidden in a drawer to the back. It was the picture of her, her father, her mother, and her brother Jaime right after Jaime was born.
Her mother had looked very tired in it but at the same time her father had looked so happy.
As she looked at the picture with tears welling in her eyes. Why was she upset? Why was she crying? She hated Hannah. She hated the woman. Hannah had abandoned her and her brothers.
She shouldn't. She shouldn't. She shouldn't cry. She shouldn't care.
So why was Cas' chest hurting?
Why should Cas care if she died?
She felt a hand on her shoulder and jumped to see her wife Gabriela holding their three kids.
"Gabi, Sol, Marc, Bel," Cas muttered as Gabriela let the kids crawl onto the bed and to their crying Mami.
Cas just let her family hug her as she cried.
….
Mirabel looked into her tea sadly as she sat next to Abuela Mirabel at the kitchen table.
"I've only seen Cas upset like this twice," Mira muttered.
"It is rare and usually involves Pedro and Hannah," Abuela Mirabel explained.
They sat in silence for a minute.
"Whats going to happen?" Mira asked looked at her older self.
"I really am not sure."
….
Meanwhile thousands of miles away, laying in a hospital bed in San Francisco, California, a blonde woman was staring out the window.
So this is going to be nothing for angst. So, enjoy Mirabel being a supportive friend and trying to understand "modern people"
Thanks for reading and please review.
