Disclaimer. The charceter of When Calls the heart do not belong to me. Nor do the prompts which inspire the drabbles.

Author Note: Okay, so this was my first drabble. It was written after Jack's death (which I'm still angry about the way they went about it) but before season 6 began. I always liked Edward from the pilot movie as well so I thin that's why I brought him back for this.

Yeah we're acting like fools

Not too concerned with what we'll do

Dear love I miss you, wherever you go

I'll always be with you

Dear love don't you worry

I'll always be here for you

When you find your way

- Lauren Marsh "Dear Love"

"This is never going to work I was foolish to think it would. We're as unsuited for one another now as we were when we were children."

Those words echoed in his head as he walked along the main street of Hope Valley.

How the town had changed since he had first escorted Elizabeth to this town. More than just the name had changed. It had changed. More businesses lined its streets. More homes dotted the country side. A school stood on the edge of town. The people who walked these streets had a spirit in their eyes instead of the desperation that had been there the last time he had been here.

He was sure Elizabeth had helped brought about that change. She was an incredible person with an untamable spirit. He had seen that in her long ago, before she had even discovered it herself. The trip out here had helped her realize that. He had felt confident when he had left her here that she would be just fine.

Elizabeth had proven him right.

More than just the town had changed these past six years. They had both changed as well. Elizabeth had become a wonderful teacher, fell in love, married, become a mother and then a widow. That was a lot for six years.

He had seen a lot over the past six years as well. He had become worthy of the uniform he wore. He had brought criminals to justice and had also learned how unfair life could be when he had been helpless as he watched the woman he had fallen for succumb to illness. He had seen war and seen friends die.

After all the changes, he had been nervous about his return here. Would Elizabeth approve of the man he had become or would she be ashamed of him.

Surprisingly, it felt like nothing had changed. She had welcomed him as an old friend. That friendship had soon evolved into something more. Elizabeth and Jack had quickly become an important part of his life.

Elizabeth felt the same. He was sure she did. It was just jitters that had made her say what she had. They were both being foolish, arguing over trivial things like decorations for the wedding. The decorations weren't important. The vows they were about to make were what was important.

So he would give her some space. Let her sort through here feelings. Then he would go back and remind her how much he loved her.

It was their love that was important, not whether the cake was vanilla or chocolate.
