The Best Thing You Can Give Your Family Is Time
Loid Forger sighed as he set some paperwork aside, his mind tired from a long day. He had reported to his superiors what he had so far and they were getting a bit frustrated, but understood he was trying his best. "Donavan must know we are trying to find him," Loid said to himself.
He heard the front door open. "Honey, we're home!" Came the voice of his lovely wife, Yor.
"I'm in the study, my love," he said.
Yor walked in with Anya, their daughter they had adopted, behind her. "Hey, honey," Yor said, going up to him and hugging him, giving him a kiss that he returned. "How was work?"
"A bit stressful, but I got the paperwork done," he said, looking into his wife's eyes.
Even though he had only married her to keep up his image of a perfect father and family man for the mission, he couldn't help but get lost in his wife's eyes and she was very beautiful. He picked up a light scent and he smiled. "Is that a new perfume, dear?" He asked.
"Oh, you noticed," she said with a smile. "I figured I'd treat myself to some new perfume after my boss praised me for my good work this week and gave me a bonus."
"You've earned that bonus as you're a hard worker," Loid said.
"Thank you, love, but I didn't just spend it on myself," she said. "I got you a couple new suits and I bought some groceries to make your favorite meal."
He smiled at her. "You're spoiling me, my dear," he said.
"Just as you spoiled me the last time you got that big bonus," she said sweetly as she fingered the beautiful necklace he had given her sometime back.
Anya giggled, smiling up at her parents. "Daddy, look! I got a good grade on my writing today," she said, proudly holding up a paper.
He took it and looked at it, impressed. "You did, sweetheart," he said, picking up his daughter and gently pinching the left side of her face with his hand, making her giggle again. "In fact, a good grade deserves a reward."
He pulled out something from his desk drawer. It was a jump rope that was purple and blue and Anya squeaked in delight, hugging her father. "Thank you, Daddy!" She said happily. "Can I go play jump rope now?"
"As long as you stay in the garden, sweetie," her mother said with a smile.
"I will, Mommy," the little girl said, taking her new jump rope and rushing outside to play.
Yor chuckled. "I got her some of her favorite ice cream to have after dinner," she said.
"She's doing so well in school," Loid said. "How did we get lucky to have such a beautiful, smart daughter?"
"She is a blessing to this family," his wife said before kissing him again and pulling him closer to her so that she was backed up against the wall as they continued to kiss.
He chuckled as he broke the kiss and looked at her. "Beautiful," he said lovingly.
She chuckled as well. "I could never get tired of seeing your handsome face," she said before wincing as her back hurt a little.
"Are you alright, love?" He asked, gently rubbing her back.
"I hurt my back a little today," she admitted.
"I'll give you a massage before bed," he offered. "Maybe even a good glass of wine while we watch a movie after putting Anya to bed?"
"Ooh, you're being awfully sweet tonight," Yor said with a smile. "What's the occasion?"
"I don't need a reason to treat my wife to a massage or spend time with her, do I?" Loid asked teasingly.
"No," she said, her hands cupping his face. "I'm looking forward to tonight."
"Let me help you make dinner, dear," he said. "I'll chop the vegetables while you handle the cooking. And I'll wash the dishes after supper."
"Sounds like a plan, honey," she said as they headed for the kitchen, seeing Anya was outside with her new jump rope and the little girl was enjoying herself.
"Sally skips over the rocks, Billy follows her, Charlie's next but she slips, Michael catches her to save the day!" The little girl sang to herself.
"Huh, wonder where she learned that little song," Loid said.
"I think she came up with it on her own," Yor said.
They listened to their daughter sing the little song again before going to the kitchen. Soon, the delicious smells from dinner filled the house and was soon on the table. "Anya, dinnertime," Loid called out to her. "Come inside and wash up."
"Yes, Daddy," the little girl said, putting her jump rope away. "I love my new jump rope, Daddy."
"I'm glad you do, sweetie," he said.
They sat down after washing up and enjoyed the wonderful meal, which was poached fish with a boiled egg and cabbage, carrots, and turnips cooked until tender, all over a bed of white rice. "Honey, this is delicious," Loid said.
"Thank you, dear," Yor said, smiling. "Anya, don't eat too fast, honey. You don't want to get the hiccups."
"Yes, Mommy," the little girl said before looking at her father. "Daddy, will you read me a bedtime story tonight, please?"
He smiled. "If you get ready for bed right after dinner, then yes," he said.
The little girl nodded eagerly and after dinner, she immediately headed to the bathtub, where Yor gave her daughter a bath while Loid kept his promise on doing the dishes. Not long after he finished the dishes, Anya came out in her pajamas. "Daddy, I'm all ready for bed," she said.
"Teeth brushed?" He asked.
"Yes, Daddy," she said, giving him a big smile.
He smiled. "Alright, time to climb aboard the slumber train," he said, picking her up and taking her to her room. He set her down so that she could pick out a storybook and she selected one quickly. She gave it to him before climbing into bed and he tucked her in with her favorite stuffed animal, which was a cat and she settled down as he opened the book and began to read.
By the time he finished the short story, Anya was sound asleep and he smiled, kissing his daughter's forehead. "Goodnight, sweetie. Daddy loves you," he said softly before leaving the room and going into his and his wife's room. She was sitting on the bed, waiting for him.
"Our little angle is asleep?" She asked.
He nodded before kissing her. "Let's get to bed ourselves, honey," he said.
She smiled at him, nodding as they kissed again.
Okay, just a heads up, this story is going to have a lot of fluff in it, but it is rated T for peril that will happen later on. Just wanted to let you guys know that.
