Juliet hated the new normal. Every week, a new 'victim' would come into the station claiming they had been kidnapped by Yin. The first few times Juliet was sympathetic and insisted on investigating herself, she knew how it felt to be at his mercy. Lassiter was surprisingly supportive and was essentially her emotional rock, he investigated thoroughly. He wasn't able to save Shawn but he would hunt down his killer with everything he had. She relied on him heavily as this 'victims' turned out to be attention seeking frauds. Then she stopped caring. Officers were dispatched to investigate the claims, usually Lassiter sent Buzz. He had been a big part of what had happened, even if he had no clue about the truth of who Shawn was. He suspected of course, he would have to have been an idiot not too. He took a knife for the man after all. Buzz was a smart officer, he knew when not to ask questions.
The atmosphere was a lot less pleasant place to work in now. Before the station had missed Shawn's presence. They had missed his practical jokes and carefree demeanour but now they mourned him. His absence was felt heavily by every officer, none more so that Juliet. This was the new normal now and everyone hated it.
"Um...detectives" Buzz interrupted them, an oddly stoic look on his face.
"What is it McNabb?" Lassiter snapped.
Juliet turned to admonish her partner but was caught off guard by Buzz's odd expression.
"Allison Cowley is in the conference room...she claims to have been kidnapped by Yin"
Juliet barely reacted and Lassiter raised an eyebrow to ask why this concerned him, this lead Buzz to continue.
"Sir... she's got proof" he said tentatively, handing over a small photograph.
Lassiter snatched it before Juliet could see and she watched as his eyes widened and he stood up.
"This is...Yang...and Shawn"
Buzz nodded, "She claimed she grabbed it when she escaped from the house"
Juliet couldn't believe this was happening.
"Tell the Chief" she instructed. Buzz nodded sharply and ran off to do so.
Juliet made her way over to Allison in the conference room. She was wearing a long sleeves top and jeans, they were dirty and one sleeve was rolled up to reveal severe bruising around her wrist. She looked very out of place on the well kept sofa.
"Hi I'm Detective O'Hara and this is my partner Detective Lassiter" she introduced them both.
Allison looked up, she still had tears in her eyes and seemed quite withdrawn.
"'I'm Allison" she whispered.
"Where did you get this photo" Lassiter demanded impatiently. Interviewing traumatised witnesses' was not his strong point.
Juliet shot him a look but turned to face Allison when she sniffled,
"I.. It was on the table by the front door when I escaped"
"Do you remember where you were kept?"
Allison nodded suddenly full of determination, "Yes"
Lassiter clenched his hand, was the game staring again? Could this be the breakthrough they were looking for? The closure that his partner needed.
"I'm coming with you" Allison insisted forcefully.
Juliet seemed troubled.
"No your not, one of our officers will remain with you here until we find out what's going on. You could be in danger"
"I'll stay" Buzz volunteered, "you've been through a traumatising experience. Leave the rest to us"
Allison made to complain but Buzz just passed a cup of water to her high she accepted gratefully.
Juliet and Lassiter marched to the Chief's office who was waiting for them.
"Let me see the photo" she demanded.
Lassiter handed over the photograph and watched as the Chief studied it intently.
"Does she know where she was kept?"
Both detectives nodded.
"Depending on when she escaped he might have relocated..." she took a deep breath. "Head over and check it out, I'll assign a couple of officers back up. Be cautious detectives"
She dismissed them and watched as they left the office to investigate. Should she have sent them with masses of guns in body armour? What evidence did they have really? The word of a traumatised witness? And a photo... she studied it once more.
It certainly looked like Shawn and Yang but how could this be possible...perhaps it was fake. She knew what she had to do, the one person who would know best. She picked up the phone and dialled Henry's number. It had been a while since they had last spoken, it would be good to hear his voice. She knew he hadn't been coping well since his son's death. Not well at all.

Henry was laying on the sofa when the phone rang. He groaned to himself, who ever was calling was waking him from a well deserved lay in. He had been drinking heavily the night before and he cursed to himself wishing he still had the metabolism of his younger self. Bottles of beer lay next to him, empty and he accidentally knocked one over as he swung his legs off the sofa.
He checked his watch and noted it was 9:30. He almost laughed to himself. So much for a lay in. Gone were the days when he naturally woke at 6am, after all what was the point.
He reached over and held the receiver to his ear and had one of the strangest conversations of his life.
"Henry...We've had another witness claim to have been kidnapped by Mr Yin"
Henry knew the police were constantly dealing with this, so far none of them had been genuine.
"And?"
"She claims she grabbed a photo on her way out... it's a photo of Shawn and Yang"
Henry almost dropped the phone.
"I'm going to send it to the crime lab to validate if it's genuine but I thought I'd ask if you would come down to the station to have a look first...see if you recognise it?"
"I'm on my way Karen" Henry answered in response.
This photograph...how old was Shawn in it? Would he recognise it? Did Shawn meet Yang when he was younger on a mission? More likely this was some sort of cruel prank, another 'victim' wanting to get the lime light for managing to escape.
Yin has never let anyone escape. He plans.
He made it the station fairly promptly, he took the time to shower first and shoved a doughnut in his mouth as way of breakfast. If Shawn were here he would be making fun of his calorie intake... His eyes saddened at the thought. He blinked back a tear, the memory was far too fresh. It was bizarre in a way. When Shawn first came into Henry's care, admittedly he had been a little bit reluctant. He was happy enough helping out the CIA but Shawn had always seemed to be putting on an act, even around him. Acted like nothing mattered, but everything Shawn did mattered. when Shawn started disappearing, going on the occasional mission he didn't confide in him. He didn't know whether to be proud or worried. At some point, he became a father, yelled at him for his choices and berated him for his mistakes. Shawn had rebelled and in a heated exchange of words, Henry made it clear that Shawn was a poor substitute of a son. It was only in the most recent years that the relationship between them had started to mend, Shawn started working with the SBPD and that had changed everything. Henry grew to respect him and he could tell Shawn noticed.
Arriving at that station he could sense the change in the atmosphere, he could imagine Shawn over by the snack machine or setting up a prank on Lassiter's desk. He shook his head to clear him self of the false vision and made his way to the Chief's office. Henry gave a small knock and the Chief called him in.
"Henry" she smiled sympathetically.
"It's good to see you Karen" he responded, his voice deep and honest.
"How are you coping. I'm sorry I haven't been round since the funeral..." she asked before trailing off.
"It's fine. I'm fine" he corrected, "Now where's the photo?"
Karen meekly handed the photograph over, Henry seemed hesitant to view it but he slowly took it from her.
Henry stared at the photo. It was Shawn... Henry felt his breath hitch.
"This... this is Shawn" Henry choked.
Karen remained silent, then drew confused as she saw Henry pleading with her to understand.
"This is my son" Henry repeated.
Karen didn't know if Henry was in shock, being confronted with a picture of his recently deceased son must have been difficult. She just nodded slowly.
Henry slammed the photograph down on her desk and she flinched,
"You don't understand Karen... this picture is of Shawn... before he got..."
Henry felt his breath catch again.
"This must be a sick joke" Henry muttered angrily.
Karen reached forward to squeeze his hand.
"I don't have many pictures of my son before the leukaemia... in this one he seems...happy"
Karen froze. "This is... Shawn Spencer" she whispered to herself.
Karen stood up from her chair, "I'm sorry I didn't realise"
"But what is he doing stood next to Yang?" He ranted exasperated, "I don't recognise this picture at all!"
Karen stayed silent for a moment, letting Henry breathe before responding.
"The crime lab will be here in less than an hour, hopefully they can shed some light on this"
"Chief" Juliet called through, peeking her head through the door and seeing Henry.
Karen didn't seem fazed, "what is it detective?"
"There was no evidence that Miss Cowley was ever held at that house" she stated.
Karen paused in thought. "I'm sensing a but"
Juliet nodded, "the family who lives there only got back this morning. They had previously been away and the house had been vacant"
"So it's possible Yin knew the house had been empty" she stated.
Henry frowned confused, "you said that the family got back this morning?" He asked.
Juliet nodded.
"That's a bit of a coincidence isn't it?" Henry stated. "She just happens to escape the day before the family come back to discover her?"
The Chief nodded, "it does seem unlikely" she agreed.
"Perhaps Yin was going to move her? And she managed to escape before he did?" Juliet suggested, "She does seem scared, the fear is genuine... I would know"
The room tensed slightly.
"And what about the photograph?" She changed the topic slightly, not wanting to dwell on her own kidnapping.
"I don't recognise it" Henry huffed out. "But it does seem to be Yang and...that's my biological son Shawn"
Juliet gasped, "what?"
Henry nodded, unsure of what else to say. "I don't have many picture is him before he got sick... so he must be about 11"
Juliet frowned confused, "When did he...pass?"
"He was 14... he was so clever" Henry laughed sadly thinking back. "I was working for the CIA back then as a...well I suppose you would call me a specialist consultant"
The two women remained quiet, listening to Henry reminisce.
"He was granted special access and began working as an analyst under the alias Shade when he was 11" Henry grinned proudly, "he was an expert at computers... cracking codes"
"He sounds amazing" Juliet remarked, she had never met the 'real' Shawn Spencer but she could tell he was loved.
"Yeah he was" Henry blinked back tears. "Complete nerd" he laughed, "complete opposite of...Shawn"
Juliet looked at the ground guiltily.
"It wasn't your fault" Henry reminded her gently. She nodded and gave a quiet sniff.
A loud knock at the door distracted them all.
"Chief?" Lassiter called through. Upon seeing she had company he took a step back.
"The crime lab are here..."
Juliet picked up the photo and gave it another quick look. She could hardly believe she was holding in her hands a picture of Henry's biological son.
"I've got this Chief" she told them, Lassiter held the door open for her and they both headed to the crime lab team who were setting up their equipment efficiently. It was a small group of three but they seemed to know exactly what they were doing. One man approached them,
"I'm in charge. Name's Smith." He held out his hand.
Lassiter shook it, matching the other man's grip and introducing himself and Juliet to them.
"This is the photo" Juliet said, holding out the photograph to them.
The man whipped out a pair of gloves and used them to hold the photo.
"Thank you, we'll get started right away. Is it just the one?"
"Indeed"Lassiter affirmed.
"Ok, leave it with us. We'll get you results as soon as possible"
Juliet gave them a smile but the man didn't reciprocate, instead he turned his back on them and started giving orders to his team mates.
Lassiter seemed impressed and Juliet seemed a little shocked that he had been professional. A lot of the time she was treated differently just because she was a woman, a smile here, a handshake held for slightly longer than necessary or sometimes an appreciative stare. None of which were ever appreciated. There had only been one person who could do that to her and get away with it. Juliet thought back to the way he used to tease her, for anything, for everything. How he often looked at her like she was the sun...she missed being looked at like that. Now all she tended to get were looks of pity.
Meanwhile back in the Chief's office, Karen was asking Henry for advice.
"What do you think I should do about Allison Cowley" she asked him, she always valued Henry's advice.
Henry sighed, "Depends, do you believe she is telling the truth?"
"Theoretically it's possible for what she's saying to be possible. The house was empty for the duration she said she had been kidnapped. She seems traumatised enough and that's hard to fake...and the picture..."
Henry frowned in thought, "the word of a traumatised witness and a photo that may or may not be real"
"Exactly" the Chief sighed, "hardly reliable. But until I can prove the photo's validity... perhaps she'll have to stay here"
Henry nodded slowly, "and if it is real?"
"Then she'll need protection" the Chief stated, "If she escaped from Yin... That makes her a target"
Henry sighed, "She can stay at mine"
She dropped the pen she had been holding.
Henry noticing her state of surprise explained, "You can't take proper action without confirmation and if she is traumatised then she shouldn't be cooped up in the station. I have a spare room...she can stay with me"
Karen stared at her friend, "are you sure Henry?... I would never ask..."
"I know" Henry interrupted, "and that's why I will"
Karen pursed her lips in thought, "Just in case, I'll send an officer with you"
Henry's eyes twinkled in protest, "I can keep her safe"
Karen sighed sadly, "please let me do this... it's not just her I'm worried about"
Henry could tell by her expression she was serious and he knew better than to protest.
"McNabb?" She suggested tentatively.
Henry grinned, "I suppose he'll do"
Karen smiled, the action causing creases to form around her eyes.
"I'll leave you to inform them. Buzz is with her now in the conference room, he was the one that took her initial statement"
Henry nodded, "call me..."
"...the moment I hear anything" she promised. Henry nodded and excused himself.

Meanwhile in an undisclosed location, a man's computer pinged. He clicked on the image that had been flagged and found himself staring at a picture that both worried him and confused him. He ran a hand through the newly formed stubble on his chin and started thinking about what he should do... if he should do anything. He really shouldn't get involved. He had never been one for rules. He took a deep breath, thinking about the consequences of the action he was about to take. Should he? Taking the plunge he began to do the impossible, he knew what he was about to attempt was risk. It was made to be unhackable. It was however susceptible to human error. You had three attempts to enter your password before it set off an alert. It only took him two attempts to guess it... He grinned. Once he had access, he sent an email, no text...just the image. Destination...Madeline Spencer.
