"Ugh, so tired." Said a small fair skinned 13 year old with messy copper colored hair wearing a white shirt with a collar, brown pants and grey glasses over electric blue eyes.

The boy was tiredly holding a few books as he headed to the courtyard of the castle of Katolis. He found a bench and collapsed onto it.

Two people standing in the courtyard noticed this. Prince Callum and Soren, the son of the high magic of Katolis.

"Yeesh, Emery." Said Callum feeling bad for the boy's sorry state. "How much sleep did you get last night?"

The boy's name was Emerick or Emery...and he's not from this world, kinda.

"Maybe the hea- i mean assistant artificer should, i don't know, sleep?" Said Soren glancing at Em's tired corpse.

Emery pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed as he thought about one thing.

'It's been over a decade, huh?'

Emery wasn't always...well, Emery. But let's summarize what happened.

Let's go back to about 9 years ago.

A four year old Emery was eating a dirty piece of bread in an empty alley. He wore filthy clothes and looked sickly for his age.

He was an old soul that came from another world. He used to be a robot engineering student in our modern world. However, he somehow died and became an orphan on the streets with not even a name to himself.

He couldn't remember much of his old life. Nearly everything was just a big blur. His name, his family, his friends, all gone, yet information persisted in his mind as well as some events. It was barely enough to scrape by in the harsh life he was thrown into.

As the young Emery ate what little food he could scape together, a bulky, but not tall, figure entered the alley.

Emery turned to the figure and saw a man with tan skin, flowy brown hair, a short beard and brown eyes that twinkled in the mild darkness of the alley. The man wore a dark brown cloak with an unworn hood and looked like he was in his early 40's or late 30's. He had a belt holding tools and small supplies that alluded to him being a craftsman of some kind. If Emery had to describe him in one word, he would say "dwarf"

Emery stepped back as the man got closer to him, fearing the worst situation. However, that wasn't the case as the man sat down on the ground in front of him and spoke.

"Hey, kid, would you like to become my apprentice?" The man asked nonchalantly with a large smile.

The question stunned Emery enough to drop his food. He quickly picked it back up as not waste food and stared at the man warily.

"I'm a craftsman who wandered all over to learn all about the crafts. I want to set up shop in this town and I'm in need of a helper and an apprentice." Said the man with a giant smile. "And i need someone who wouldn't go and steel my secrets. Hah! Get it?"

"That's a horrible joke." Said Emery feeling slightly at ease near the man.

"Now we're talking!" The man joked. "Name's Culann, what's yours?"

The man looked as if he was expecting a name from Emery, but the reincarnated boy didn't have one at the time nor did he remember his old name.

"Ehm...i don't have one."

"Then I'll give you one...if you agree to becoming my apprentice." Said Culann with a pleading look.

"...excuse me, but why do you want me specifically?"

"Well, you just have that look in your eyes. The look that tells me you're not a normal kid. And what normal kid knows the word 'specifically'?"

Emery froze. In the four years he spent on the streets as Emery, he never thought about how a normal child would act and it seems that Culann picked up on that.

"You don't have to fake it, just tell me your answer."

"What if i give up halfway? Can i even give up?"

"You can and if you do, it was never meant to be." Explained Culann calmly.

Emery stared at Culann as he considered the offer. It wouldn't be bad to have a roof over his head and some proper food. Culann also didn't look like a bad guy and he said he could leave whenever.

"*sigh* alright, I'll be your apprentice." Said Emery rolling his eyes.

"Great choice,...uhh. Right, name. How about...Emerick?"

Sometimes, Emery wishes that that was it; that there is nothing else that's weird other than being reincarnated in a medieval world and being adopted by some craftsman. But alas, he was reborn inside a FANTASY world with elves and dragons and magic.

But Emery focused, not on the creatures, but on how awful human living conditions can be in this technological era.

Things during this technological era wasn't favorable for humanity because magic was scarcely available for humans. Starvation, illness, battling for your life, you name it. Elves on the other hand, were living in paradise.

So, Emery tried getting some parts of his old world to this one. By introducing some simple inventions like fans that work by turning a crank in hopes of starting a profession where people would focus more on the potential of machines.

Culann had all the tools he needed and was willing to experiment, which allowed Emery to make whatever he wanted.

And that's when he discovered it, how to artificially create magic. It was a moment he would never forget.

His fans consistently attracted small birds. Looking into the phenomenon and into books on magic from libraries, there was only one explanation. The strong movement of the wind generated enough sky primal magic energy to attract small birds connected to said primal.

This sparked a curiousness for magic and the possibility of skipping centuries of research as well as a more approachable alternative to the people of this world compared to science.

Using makeshift and very simple computers that would be considered less than calculators in his old world to draw a spell inside the PROPER conditions, artificial magic was born.

It was both a blessing and a curse because, as time went on and more machines were made, word reached King Harrow who promptly visited the two with Katolis's high mage, Viren.

Viren was very...unhappy to know that artificial magic was discovered by a child. However, King Harrow had the opposite reaction.

He hired the, at the time, 10 year old on the spot like some twisted Pokemon professor. Culann was hired as well when Harrow recognized his talent, especially when it came to making weapons.

And so, coerced into child labor, Emery became the head artificer of Katolis. The title being chosen by Emery himself who was a Dungeons and Dragons fan.

Emery got up from the bench and sat down to watch the scene where Soren "taught" Callum sword fighting.

"Prince Callum. Today we focus on the art of-" Soren said calmly before Callum interrupted him.

"Art! Finally something I'm good at." Said Callum putting his hands on his hips excitedly.

Soren stared at Callum judgingly and crossed his arm, causing his excitement to die down.

"Sorry, sorry, won't interrupt again. Please continue, Soren." Said Callum sheepishly.

Emery sighed and decided to shut his eyes for a minute. And everything was fine until Claudia walked into the court yard holding a book titled "Love Amongst the Dragons" and a drink.

Callum shouted Claudia's name to warn her of the tree she was about to slam into.

"Oh. Hi, Callum!" Said Claudia cheerfully as she waved to the young boy before pointing at the same tree she was about to slam into. "Is this new?"

"Relatively new." Said Callum with a chuckle. "It's only been there for 300 years."

Claudia laughed at the new information before turning to Emery who was laying on the bench she where wanted to sit down.

"Mind moving a tiny bit?" She asked cheerfully still holding her book and drink.

Emery sighed and moved to make space for Claudia to sit.

"You really like cold drinks, don't you?" Asked Emery eyeing Claudia's drink.

"Yeah! The frosty metal boxes you make are just perfect for this." She replied happily.

"They're called fridges...or freezers, not frosty metal boxes." Deadpanned Emery. "They're made with artificial sky magic and keep food preserved for much longer, give it the respect of a good name."

"I think frosty metal box is a great name." Replied Claudia cheerfully. Before Emery could argue, Claudia unknowingly changed the subject. "Also, you should get some sleep. Your eye bags could probably hold this book." She said holding her "Love Amongst the Dragons" book in front of him.

Emery sighed tiredly, his desire to not be questioned about his sleep schedule prevailing.

"Maybe you should focus on something other than my eyebags." Said Emery tiredly. "Like that poor fella over there."

"Oh, I am stabbed! By the stab-prince! Lord Stabbington! Why? Spurt! Spurt!" Exclaimed Soren dramatically.

"Nice work, Callum." Cheered Claudia before sighing. "He deserves it."

Emery hummed as he opened one of the books he brought with him, not wanting to deal with whatever story stuff was happening.

If only his rest wasn't interrupted every few seconds.

"Prince Callum. The King needs to speak with you urgently." It was Opeli who entered the scene. "Assistant Artificer Emery, you have a visitor in the workshop."

Emery nodded and silently got up with his books in hand before walking away and heading to his workshop, completely ignoring the assistant artificer part.

As he left, he glanced at a few large wind turbines placed atop the castle to make sure they were working fine before moving on. They were the castle's power source after all.

It didn't take long for Emery to reach his destination and upon opening the door, he saw the person that took him in all those years ago.

"Hi, grandpa."

Culann frowned at Emery's words. "Rude as ever i see." He said rolling his eyes. "Sit down; this is important."

Emery did as told and sat down silently.

"I'll get straight to the point. Elves are planning to assassinate the king...*sigh* and possibly you as well."

Emery let out a sound of confusion which prompted Culann to continue.

"We don't know for sure, but word of artificial magic has reached the other 4 human kingdoms. Who's to say it hasn't reached Xadia. And they might not be too happy with humanity gaining a new type of magic. Especially since you've replicated 4 and a half of the primal sources." Said Culann with a frown.

"My life's on the line because they have a thing against humans?" Asked Emery pinching the bridge of his nose.

"Pretty much. But there's something that Xadia doesn't know. That you're a short thirteen year old innocent looking kid." Said Culann in a serious tone. "Most people in this castle think you're the head Artificer's assistant or relative. Only the high mage, his children, the king, the princes and i know of your identity. Everyone else, including the other human kingdoms, believes that the great Emerick is some great sage of vast knowledge and experience. That is who Xadia will be looking for."

Emerick nodded slowly. He couldn't really make anti elf defenses because he never made defenses before in both his lives.

Seeing the nod, Culann stood up and started leaving the room.

"So pack your stuff, get out and stay safe. I'll be at my place smelting some iron."

And with that, Emery was left in his workshop wondering how he got here. Because he really didn't know anymore.
