Chapter 1 YELLING!
Why does dating someone have to be so hard?
Seriously? It was such a difficult thing for Roy Koopa, which was weird considering that he was pretty much a dating expert. He has dated quite a number of people. There was...um….uh. Wasn't there that one girl with angel wings? Oh wait no, that was just a Koopa's Secret model who he had a picture of in his bedroom.
Huh. Okay. He had thought that he had more people who he had dated in his life, but no. There were only two people who he could say with full confidence that he had gone out with.
Maybe that led into the answer of his question; he was inexperienced.
But...even though that was the case, he still thoroughly enjoyed dating. It was like a little adventure all on its own. You got to spend time with a person you wouldn't necessarily spend time with normally. You got to find out about them and their life. You got to discover parts of them and parts of yourself, all while doing fun things together.
Well...fun things for the most part. Some of those things didn't turn out to be fun. Like family drama. Family drama was never fun.
And, unfortunately, Roy would soon find out that he would be up to his neck in family drama. On the plus side, it wasn't necessarily his family drama. No, it was his girlfriend's. Which, in all honesty, made a lot of sense. When one is a koopa human hybrid whose father abandoned them before they were born, one is bound to have a few journeys into that realm of life.
Didn't make it any more fun, but it was at least understandable.
And the most amusing part about it was the fact that Roy himself was completely unprepared for it. He had just been marching down the path, a bouquet of flowers in hand and a sweet tune escaping from his mouth in the form of whistles. He strutted like a fancy cat, grinning from ear to ear as he made his way toward his girlfriend's house.
"Hey koopa!" One road called out to him. "Go die in a hole!"
"Go back to the Dark Lands where you belong!" shouted another.
"Eat mealworms!"
Roy chuckled. These guys knew absolutely nothing about Koopas. First off, they didn't die in holes. They died on deathbeds like every other species in the Mushroom World. Secondly, it was called The Koopa Kingdom, not the Dark Lands, thank you very much. And third….well, who in their right mind would eat mealworms?
Yeah, none of these insults really phased ole Roy. He kept his eyes focused on his goal, strutting his stuff like he had everything to gain and nothing to lose. When he got to his girlfriend's house, he stopped and took a deep breath.
"Okay," he said. He adjusted himself. "Time to wow everyone." He placed his hand on the doorknob, allowing himself access to the Marksmote residence. He kept the smile on his face, hoping that by showing everyone that he was happy, they too would start to feel happy.
"Celia!" He called put, bouquet at the ready. "I've come to sweep you off your feet and call you my darling! Will you accept my offer?"
"YOU'RE THE WORST!"
Roy blinked, his heart started collapsing in on itself. "Well, that wasn't the answer I was looking for." He scratched his head. "Wait, where is everybody?"
There was no one in the living room. Dormant enough to be welcoming to tumbleweeds, it made the experience of being called the worst that much stranger to Roy. He took a step forward. "Celia?"
"CEE, YOU HAVE GONE TOO FAR THIS TIME!"
A scoff followed that statement. "TOO FAR? ARE YOU KIDDING? I WAS JUST TRYING TO HELP A FAMILY MEMBER!"
"A FAMILY MEMBER WHO DOESN'T DESERVE HELP FROM US!"
Curiosity was growing in Roy's heart all the more. The person yelling was obviously Celia, and she was locked in a fight with her mother, Ruby. At least, that's what the quality of the voices present suggested. Roy just started to wonder where Celia's father, Singe was, when he heard him yell as well.
"CELIA, YOUR AUNT ALICIA HAS MADE HER OPINIONS ON US CLEAR!"
Roy stopped when he came across a door that was closed, the door to Ruby and Singe's bedroom. This was where the argument was taking place, he knew it. He leaned in close, just to have the satisfaction of quenching his curiosity.
"THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT ALBERT HAS!" Celia screamed.
"HE'S HER SON!" came Ruby's voice. There was a raw, heated, broken quality to her voice.
"HE'S MY COUSIN!"
More and more, Roy was starting to feel as if he shouldn't be here. He was intruding on someone's life and listening in on a private conversation that he had no place to do so. Sure, one of the people locked in the argument was his girlfriend. But that didn't matter. This was one of the instances in life where he couldn't be of help to her.
So, Roy backed away from the door. He was determined to moonwalk as best he could all the way back to the front door, and then bolt back to the Koopa Kingdom. He could always come back later.
Crash!
Roy's heart froze in its tracks. He inched his head to the left hand side, the rest of his body not daring to move or even shutter. When he saw what was on the floor, his heart pounded again. It was a vase. Or, more specifically, a pile of glass shards that used to be a vase.
"Dang it!" Roy whispered.
The door opened up, and Roy's heart pounded even faster. Ruby, Celia, and Singe stared at him, clearly shocked that he was present at all.
"Roy!" Ruby said, this time at a normal volume. She curled her hair over her ear as her face turned crimson. "How...why...where...how much of that did you hear?"
"Uh...a decent chunk." Roy wanted to crack a joke, something along the lines of "wow, you guys yell loud enough to be heard from space," or, "Are you training for the world's loudest family contest next month?" However, he didn't say that. Something told him it wouldn't be appropriate.
"I'll...uh…." Roy gripped his bouquet tighter, biting his lip as he did so. "I should probably leave." He barely avoided stepping on one of the glass shards. It was a shame that such a lovely vase had to be destroyed.
"Actually, Roy," said Celia. Roy turned toward her, and saw that she was glaring in a way that was probably supposed to be directed at her parents. "I think we could use you to settle a dispute."
