Prologue
"Stop making so much noise back there. It's impossible to be stealthy with you two behind me."
Three silhouettes moved in the pale moonlight, minds set on the destination. The wind blew hard, causing them to squint their eyes. They all knew they couldn't be out that late, especially given where they were going.
Crossing a small stream, the group looked ahead as a dark forest loomed ahead of them. An owl could be heard in the distance, as well as a howling coyote.
The last cat in the line, a small tabby she-cat, stopped and looked up at the tall oak trees, eyes wide. "You're sure we have to go in there?"
The obvious leader of the trio, a huge tom, growled in response, clearly agitated. "Quit complaining. We all had the same dream, this is the way we have to go to solve all of our issues."
Paws wet, they made their way into the forest. Here, the moonlight couldn't light the way, and they had to move slower and rely more on the senses other than sight.
As they traveled in relative silence, the darkness around them crept within their minds, causing hallucinations.
"What was that?"
The huge tom swung his heavy head around to glare at the cat behind him, a wiry, light colored tom. "It's just your mind playing tricks on you. Ignore it. We should be there shortly."
After that, another word wasn't spoken until they eventually heard meows in the distance. The huge tom stopped in his tracks and stuck his tail in the air, signaling the others to stop as well. "Do you hear that? I told you we would find them. Come on, and try not to act too scared." With that, he started towards the voices with a stride of determination. His two followers matched his steps, albeit with less enthusiasm.
As they neared, the voices grew in tone, and words could be heard. It sounded like a small group of cats was ahead of them. The huge tom wasted no time bursting through a thick blackberry bush, revealing an astonishing sight in front of him.
A small clearing opened up, surrounded on all sides by the dense oaks that make up the forest. In the center of the clearing was some sort of cylindrical Twoleg object, blue in color and open on the one end. It was laying on its side, and had dirt and sticks piled up on both sides of it so that it couldn't roll away. To its left was a large stump, and on it's right was a large pile of sticks and leaves made into a giant den.
The huge tom made his way a few tail-lengths into the clearing, with his two companions right at his back.
As soon as the group emerged, a scraggly gray cat approached them quickly, hackles raised.
"Trespassers, eh? You won't like what we do to cats who come into our clearing without invitation."
The huge tom squared his shoulders and thrust his muzzle towards the other cat. "If you think you can take me, go for it."
All of the commotion attracted the rest of the camp to emerge from their hiding spots. Two cats appeared from behind the large stump, three came out of the homemade den, and one came out of the forest behind the stump. They all rushed over and got in a semicircle around the trio of cats. Pelts bristling, it was only a matter of time before someone broke the tension and pounced.
Just as the thin line of neutrality was about to break, a cat crawled out of the Twoleg object. As soon as this happened, the rest of the clearing cats slowly let their guard down, backing away ever so slightly.
Black with white stripes, this was clearly a well-toned she-cat with long limbs. She spoke as she neared the group.
"I sensed it was time you came. I've been predicting it for many sunrises now." She had a very powerful voice, and as she continued speaking, both groups of cats relaxed, as if this one cat could calm any battle.
The huge tom bowed his head, and his two companions followed suit. "Yes, we came as soon as we could."
Stepping forward slightly, the gray cat from before looked at the she-cat with curious eyes. "Are you sure we can trust them?"
The she-cat chuckled. "Relax yourself, Spike. The only reason they were led here is so that we can help each other. Is that not why you are here?" She gestured back to the group.
"Yes, that is exactly why." The huge tom looked the she-cat right in the eyes. "We are here to deliver what we promised. A mutual agreement that will help both of us out."
Now that pretty much every cat was calm, the clearing cats dispersed back to where they came, although they kept an eye on the newcomers.
The she-cat nodded towards the blue Twoleg object and started walking. "Follow me, we can discuss more in my den."
With that, the four cats all funneled into the Twoleg thing, which turned out to be a lot more spacious inside.
The trio of newcomers spread out in front of the she-cat, eager to start planning. She started the conversation by addressing her name. "I know who all of you are and why you are here, but I doubt you know my name. I am Mora, and this is where we stay. There is plenty of space and more prey than you can imagine. Now, let me hear your plan again, now that we are meeting in reality and not our dreams." Mora licked her chest and flicked her tail.
The huge tom, taking the lead as usual, wrapped his tail around his paws as he sat down. "You're aware of the fact that we live outside of the forest, in three separate clans?" More nodded, directing him to continue. "We are tired of the way the Clans live. It's the same thing, morning after morning, night after night. They have been peaceful for too long. My companions and I", he motioned towards the other two cats with his broad head, "are tired of the same routine. We want to destroy the clans, and create one giant community." He growled. It was a deep and menacing sound. "We need your group's help in completing the task."
Mora stared at the tom for a few seconds. "I'll get the simple question out of the way. I don't know how your "clans" work, but why don't you all just call a meeting or something, and bring up combining altogether?" The question was legit enough.
He was shaking his head already. "Too straightforward. It goes against the warrior code. We would be thrown out as outcasts, and the three of us aren't strong enough to take on all of the clans if we were to try and take them over by ourselves."
"I see." Mora stood up and strolled passed the newcomers back out into the clearing. Without asking, they all got up and followed her.
Mora turned back as she padded off. "I'm going to talk to a few of the cats from the camp. I will get back to you shortly."
Once she was out of earshot, the wiry tom turned and looked at their mutual leader. "Are you sure we can trust these cats? Nobody has ever heard of them before. How do we know they won't turn on us?"
"Don't be mouse-brained." The huge tom growled, sounding irritated. "What would they benefit from turning on us?" He directed his gaze towards the tabby she-cat. "What about you? Having doubts as well?"
She stared back for a few moments, observing the large form only a mouse-tail length away. "No. We were told to come here from a higher power. Starclan, the Dark Forest, or somewhere else. I don't know. We weren't led here for nothing though. This is what we all wanted. I want to see it through to the end, just as much as you."
Nodding, the leader looked back at the wiry tom again. "If you want out, just say so and leave now while you still can. I don't have time for worrying."
Bristling, the wiry tom took a step towards his larger companion. "No. I am not a coward, and I am not afraid of you. I was just asking questions, that's all."
"Just know that once we start this, we have to follow through. All of us." The huge tom growled back.
Mora returned to them, with Spike and another cat close to her paws. "Okay. We will help you. But there is something we want out of it." The trio of outsiders glanced at each other. Mora continued. "Once your clans have been defeated, and the remaining fighting cats have been driven off, we want to join forces with your side of cats. We long for the fight and the thrill of victory. After we have helped you, we want you to side with us as we create a path of death. Let's keep traveling, and any other groups of cats we find will be destroyed as well." She sounded satisfied as she spoke, her meow was music to her ears.
The wiry tom and small she-cat exchanged nervous glances, not sure what to say. This isn't what they wanted. They just wanted to live in one large community, and war was the only way to get to that point. Before they could speak though, the huge tom answered with an evil chuckle. "You have yourself a deal."
