AN: I know I should be working on my other stories right now; and not starting a new one. I'm stretched pretty thin with all the stories I have to manage. But sometimes when I get a new idea, I just can't help but tell people about it.
Because if I don't bring it into existence, then it feels like I might lose my mind. But with all that being said, this will be a short story; so I think it would be okay if I made this story now. I really don't see this story lasting for more than a few chapters. So let me tell you a little bit about my idea for this story.
In the Ultimate Marvel universe of 1610, Captain America was responsible for a lot of the superheroes and villains that exist today. Everyone tried to recreate The Super-Soldier Serum; which resulted in the creation of many Marvel heroes.
According to my research of Earth 1610, even the Mutants were a direct result of a then unknown genome that was discovered while trying to create Super-Soldiers. The genome was then released into the world, which caused the birth of Mutant kind. The heroes that were created because of Captain America include but might not be limited to, The X-MEN, The Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man. But what if things were different?
My story is all about what would happen if Spider-Man and Captain America switched roles. Spider-Man would have gotten his powers during World War II; and he would fight in the war, only to wind up in modern times. Where as Steve Rogers would have been born in modern day Brooklyn; with his abilities being a result of trying to copy Spider-Man's powers.
A lot of heroes and villains would have been created because of Spider-Man, instead of Captain America. This story will be somewhat placed in the setting of the Ultimate universe; but it will be more heavily placed in the setting of the animated movie "Ultimate Avengers". I really enjoyed the movie; and I wondered what would happen if Spider-Man was front and center, instead of Cap. Now with all of that out of the way; let's jump into it.
Queens, New York 1944
Peter Parker was an intelligent kid, who lived in New York City. He was born during the Great depression; and he was currently fifteen years old. His parents died when he was a small child; so he and his younger sister Teresa were sent to live with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben.
Because Peter was a kind of intellectual, this meant that he loved to learn. It was this very fact that made him a target of bullying and ridicule. The other kids at school would often pick on him by calling him four eyes, or a nerd. They would also on occasion, physically torment him.
There were times when he found this unbearable. But the one person who made him feel better, through all of his abuse, was his Uncle Ben. Peter had told him on more than one occasion, that he would one day want to go to college, and then become a scientist. Ben was always supportive of Peter's interests, and of his dreams. He saw that Peter had a real gift; a gift of Wonder and curiosity. He just knew that when his nephew grew up, that he would be the best out of all of them.
Despite all the hardships that he faced, Peter still managed to have a good life. This was due in no small part, to his friends and family. There was his aunt and uncle, his sister, and his best friend, Harry Osborn. Harry was the son of Norman Osborn, one of the richest men in New York.
Norman was grooming his son to one day take over as head of Oscorp industries. Then there was the love of Peter's life, Mary Jane Watson. Her and Peter have been friends for years; and it was during that time that she realized, that Peter wasn't like other guys.
Unlike every other boy his age, Peter wasn't arrogant, or a jerk. MJ thought that he was smart, cute, decent, and funny. When she eventually worked up the courage to ask him out, that was one of the happiest days of Peter's life. They've been dating ever since. When he was old enough to understand, his Uncle Ben told him that he had fought in World War I. He was an airplane pilot. Which meant that he spent his time flying over the battlefield, and raining death from above.
He had said to Peter, that there was a moment when he believed in what he was fighting for. But then he told him that there came a time, that the war he fought in, was not an honorable one. He had to do things that were hard to live with; and by the end of it, he didn't feel like a hero.
After Uncle Ben walked off the battlefield, he became an activist. One of the ways that he truly thought he could help out, was to stand up for the people. To speak for the people; to shine a light on some of the worlds injustices.
Although, there were times when he shared his disdain for the current war, with Peter. It had finally gotten to the point where Peter decided to ask him about that. "Hey Uncle Ben, I know that you hated the war you fought in; and that you like the current war even less. But I just gotta ask. If you really didn't like this war, and if you wanted it to stop; then would you reenlist in the army to end it, if you could?"
Peter was a little bit afraid of his answer. Because he knew that Uncle Ben was the kind of man who was bound by duty. But if Ben were to get involved in the war now, then there's a good chance that Peter would lose him; and that's the last thing that he would want. For Ben, it wasn't just the answer that gave him pause; it was also the question itself. He had to really think about his response.
"That's not something that I would want to do. But to answer your question, yes. War is not good for anyone. And anyone who despises it, should do everything they can to stop it. A soldier should fight to end wars; not revel in the brutality of them.
I choose to believe that that's the one thing that would separate me from them. The people we're fighting, they seek the kind of power that would destroy us and everything we love. Nobody should ever have that kind of power; and if they do, then it's our job to take it away. So I would go to war for you, for our family, for our home, and for our way of life.
But that's why I'm so proud of you, Peter. Because you're better than me. You're as smart as they come. Where others see only one solution to a problem, you will look for many. It is my greatest hope that this war will end without you ever having to set foot on a battlefield. I never want you to have to make that choice between life and death.
Now I may not be a hero, but you are. You're my hero. I just know that one day you'll end up saving the world, but you'll do it the right way. By using what's in your head, and your heart." Peter was inspired by what Uncle Ben said. How could he not be?
Although Uncle Ben was no longer in the army, his old war buddies still had some connections. It was through them, that he heard of some big medical breakthrough that the government sanctioned. It was supposed to be a miracle of modern science. He knew that Peter was really into science; so he asked his buddies if they could pull some strings and let them see the demonstration. It took some convincing, but they finally agreed to let them watch.
When Ben told Peter about the demonstration, he was overjoyed. It was hard to believe that he would witness something that was supposed to be so scientific, and fantastic. But then Uncle Ben had to inform him that he couldn't tell anyone. It was a government secret after all; meaning that they couldn't tell anyone where they were going, or what they would see.
Peter understood, and he agreed. So when the day of the demonstration finally came, Ben and Peter were standing in front of an old store. Peter remarked that it didn't look like a place where someone would be doing a science demonstration. Uncle Ben assured Peter that it was indeed the right place.
It was top secret; so they couldn't exactly advertise it to the world. This way they could blend in, and no one would be the wiser. Before they went in, Uncle Ben again reminded Peter that he couldn't tell anyone about this. Peter said he understood, and then they went inside. They then made their way down to the basement, where the demonstration would take place.
There was a great many people in attendance. They were promised that America would be given a super weapon. A weapon that could stand against the Nazis. A weapon that would turn the tide of the war, and give hope to the people of America. So they all waited in anticipation for the demonstration to get underway.
Among the crowd of people, was a scientist who wore glasses and a white lab coat; he had gray hair. The scientist was rather nervous. You see, he had lost something very important; and he was frantically searching for it. He was just about to ask someone to help him find it, when he ran into Peter. "Excuse me, young man; have you seen a-"
Before the scientist could finish his question, he began to think about what he was going to ask Peter. It was going to be a rather odd and unique question. He knew that the demonstration could not begin without first finding what he was looking for. So he decided to keep looking on his own. "Uh, nevermind; I'll find it myself" the scientists said before he walked off. Shortly after that, Uncle Ben left Peter side, to go talk to his buddies.
But what he nor Peter noticed, was a huge spider that was hanging on a line of webbing. The spider had a black body, with two yellow zeros printed on its butt. The spider crawled down the web until it reached Peter's right hand. Before Peter even knew what was going on, the spider had already sunk its fangs into his flesh.
Peter screamed in pain as he threw the spider off of him. It landed on the ground and scurried away. As soon as Uncle Ben heard Peter's cries of pain, he made his way back to him. "Peter, are you all right? What happened?" Uncle Ben asked. Then Peter started to suddenly feel nauseous.
"I think I'm going to be sick. I need to go to the bathroom" Peter said before he rushed off to find a restroom.
Then the same scientist from earlier, noticed the spider crawling on the floor. "There you are" he said before he picked the spider up with a gloved hand. "You naughty spider. I should have kept a better eye on you." He murmured as he walked off with the spider. Now he could begin with the demonstration.
Meanwhile, the first thing that Peter did when he got to the bathroom, was to puke his guts out in one of the toilets. When he was done with that, his body temperature suddenly began to spike. He felt like he was burning up; so he decided to take off his shirt in an attempt to cool down.
Then he was introduced to a significant amount of pain; it was like he was being torn apart and put back together again. His chest was getting tight, and his breathing became heavier. When the pain subsided, he tried to look at himself in the mirror. But his vision was now blurry, which made him take off his glasses.
Apparently, he could now see much better without his glasses. Before, he could barely see without them. But now, It was like whatever happened to him, also fixed his eyesight. But that wasn't his only surprise. When he looked back at his reflection, he saw that he now had biceps, pecks and abs.
He had never possessed any muscles before; but now his upper body was covered in them. He couldn't help but admire his new look. It was like he was somehow transformed into a better version of himself; and he felt great. Just then, he felt a strange tingling sensation in the back of his head. It was like it was trying to warn him of something, perhaps an imminent threat.
As if by acting on instinct, Peter jumped up into the air and miraculously stuck to the ceiling. Then a man walked into the restroom, did his business, and left. That must have been what the tingling in the back of his skull was warning him about. It would have been embarrassing if someone saw the way that Peter was freaking out. Then Peter jumped off the ceiling, did a flip, and landed safely on the ground.
Then he tried to take a minute to think about things; so he steadied himself on one of the sinks. But without meaning to, and without using much force, he actually yanked the sink right off the wall. He thought that this was all pretty strange, but he also thought that it was kinda amazing. He was stronger and faster than he's ever been before; and apparently, he could now stick to any surface.
But he would have to figure this all out at a later time; because he knew that Uncle Ben must be really worried about him. So he gathered up his clothes, got dressed, and went back to the demonstration. When he got back, the first thing that Uncle Ben noticed, was that Peter wasn't wearing his glasses. But Peter just gave him an excuse about them being broken, and told him not to worry about it. When the demonstration was finally getting started, Peter saw that the same scientist who he ran into from earlier, was now standing in front of everyone, on a stage.
"Hello everyone; I'm sorry that we had a delay, but now we're back on track. My name is Dr. Abraham Erskine; and this is what you all came here to see." He said as he held up a cage with a huge spider in it, the same spider that bit Peter. Everyone laughed at that, but not Peter. He was more worried than anything else; especially after he found out that the spider that bit him, was part of a military experiment. Erskine could sense their disbelief; and he was eager to prove them wrong.
"This spider may not seem like much. But I assure you; it is far from normal. I have created a serum that will increase strength, speed, agility, and overall endurance. It will also increase the healing factor of any subject that it is administered to. Our goal is to create the next generation of Super-Soldiers. Soldiers who will win us the war; and soldiers who will give America back its hope.
But we are not mad scientists. I wasn't going to give an untested drug to humans, without first making sure if it was safe to use. This spider represents the crowning achievement of my work. This spider has been genetically altered by both an injection of the serum, and by a bombardment of Vita Rays. Thus creating an entirely new species of spider."
Then to prove his claims, Erskine broke out a number of documents. He showed them photos of before and after his experiments on the spider. He showed them charts and documentation of his research; and finally, he showed them a slide real video of his experiments.
The charts showed that the spider was bigger and stronger than a normal one; and that even it's webs were thicker than a normal spider's. The video also showcased just how strong this spider really was. It had dented and damaged the original cage it was in; so they had to put it in a new specially built cage.
Dr. Erskine then said that they were ready to move on to human trials. At this point, Peter was kind of beside himself with worry. He had just found out that the spider that bit him, was part of some sort of Super-Soldier program. That would explain why all those weird things were happening to him. But before he could contemplate it any further, the tingling in the back of his head return.
Someone had thrown a grenade in the room; and when it exploded, some people were hurt, some people even died. The man who threw it, then went on stage, killed the spider, and then proceeded to destroy Erskine's research. Erskine tried to stop him; but the man then shot and killed him.
"HEY, STOP!" Uncle Ben shouted as he tried to wrestle the gun away from the man. During their struggle, the man managed to fire off a shot that sent Uncle Ben to the ground in pain.
"NO!" Peter yelled when he saw his uncle hit the floor. He ran over to his uncle, and placed his hands on the wound to try to stop the bleeding. "Uncle Ben, hold on. It's gonna be ok." Peter said as he tried to reassure him.
"Peter...g...get...help" Ben said weakly. Peter was just about to go for help, when Uncle Ben grabbed ahold of him. "Someone has to stop him." Uncle Ben was referring to the man who shot him. It was at this point that Peter realized that Uncle Ben didn't ask Peter to get help because he was shot. He wanted the man who did this to be stopped.
He didn't want him to get away with this. He wanted Justice for the people that he hurt and killed. But most importantly, he wanted to make sure that this wouldn't happen to anyone else. To Uncle Ben, doing what was right, was more important than even his own survival. Immediately after Peter understood this, Uncle Ben closed his eyes and let his head fall to the ground. He was dead. "Uncle Ben, no" Peter said as he watched him die.
He buried his face in his uncle's chest and began to cry. Then he clenched his fists in anger. His Uncle Ben was dead, and nothing could change that. But maybe he could still do right by him, by fulfilling his dying request. So he got up and chased after the man who did this.
When Peter got outside, he saw the man he was chasing, steal a car. With the man driving away; Peter saw no choice but to chase him down on foot, so he did. He was running faster than he ever did in his entire life; no doubt thanks to the spider bite.
He was making serious progress in his pursuit. Peter chased that car for blocks. He ran, and he jumped across the roofs of other cars. He swung from lamp posts. He even ran on the sides of buildings. This extreme parkour was what eventually let him jump on the roof of the car he was chasing. "STOP!" Peter shouted as he looked through the windshield.
Then the man tried to shoot Peter. Once through the windshield, and a few times through the roof. Thankfully, Peter was quick enough to dodge every shot. It was then that Peter ran out of patience; so he punched his fist through the roof of the car. "I SAID STOP!" Peter said as he grabbed and turned the steering wheel.
This caused the car to swerve, flip over, and eventually crash. Luckily, Peter jumped off the roof before that happened. Peter then walked over to the car, ripped the door off, and pulled the man out. The man tried to shoot Peter; but he knocked the gun out of his hand, and then punched him in the face. Then Peter grabbed him by his shirt collar.
"Those were good men you killed back there. Why did you do it? WHY?" Peter questioned.
The man answered him in a German accent; and it was clear to Peter that this man was a Nazi. "The scientist could not be allowed to create a weapon that would rival Germany's power. And that man tried to stop me, the old fool." He said in reference to Uncle Ben. Hearing him talk about his uncle in that way, really made Peter's blood boil. "But with their superweapon gone, I have taken away America's hope. We will win the war, and there's nothing you can do about it" the man stated.
"We'll see about that" Peter declared before he dragged him away. Peter eventually brought the man back to where the demonstration took place. He decided that it would be better to let the government do what they wanted to him.
Sometime after that, Ben's family grieved for their loss. Everyone lost someone important to them; a husband, a uncle, and a friend. The day after Uncle Ben's funeral, Peter started thinking about the war. If any War could cause this kind of devastation in people's lives, then it had to come to an end. The Nazis couldn't be allowed to just do whatever they wanted anymore.
Then Peter remembered the lesson that his Uncle Ben taught him; and he came up with a modo to hold it all together. "If there is too much power, then it is the responsibility of the people to take it away." That was going to be him. Somehow, someway, he was going to enlist in the army; and he was going to take away the power that the Nazis coveted.
Peter went upstairs to the Attic; and then he opened his uncle's old war chest. He got out his uncle's old airmen uniform. He knew that if you went to war, you had to wear a uniform. He couldn't think of a better way to honor Uncle Ben. "Alright, I can work with this." Peter said as he eyed the tools in the chest. He did have to make certain modifications to the uniform though. He's sewed together a makeshift mask to go with the outfit.
It seemed as though the only power he didn't get from the spider was the ability to shoot webs. But that was a problem that he believed he could easily science up a solution for. Through some trial and error, he was finally able to create two wrist mounted Web-Shooters.
They were able to shoot a layer of webbing that was strong enough to incapacitate an enemy. Or they could be used to swing from one point to another; creating a fast, new and exciting way to travel. He put on the uniform, and looked at himself in the mirror. He had on a black mask with goggles, a black vest and gloves, black pants and boots, and a sweater underneath the vest.
One of the modifications he made to the outfit, was the spider symbol he put on the back of the vest. Since a spider gave him his powers, it felt only right that it should be represented. He also had a holster for his uncle's old revolver. When he was done, even he thought that he was ready for battle. He was going to make Uncle Ben proud.
Of course, he knew that there were people that couldn't know about what he was going to do; and then there were people that had to know what he was going to do. People like Harry, his sister, and MJ. The three of them were important to him; he couldn't just lie to them. So one day, he decided to tell Harry, MJ, and his sister about his plan. He told them everything that happened during and after the science demonstration; and then he told them what he was going to do. He even showed them the uniform that he was going to wear.
They had a lot of thoughts on the matter; and not a lot of them were good. "So you got bit by a spider, which gave you weird super powers, then you chased after the man who killed Uncle Ben, and now you want to join the army? That's crazy. Powers or no powers, Peter; if you do this, then there's a very strong chance that you won't come back. And I can't lose you too" his sister said.
"Teresa, they killed Uncle Ben; and they need to pay for that, and for all the families of the men going home in pine boxes. Someone needs to get justice for them. And I have a feeling that I can end his war." Peter lectured her.
"You're not even old enough to join the army. And what about Aunt May? Are you going to tell her, or not?" she asked.
"I'm not going to let that stop me. I will find a way to join up. And don't tell Aunt May. She's old, and I don't want her to die of a heart attack" he declared.
"And just where is she supposed to think you're at?" Teresa questioned.
"I don't know; I'll think of something. Just don't tell her the truth" he responded.
"So essentially, you're going to fight in the war as some sort of spider man?" Harry asked. When Harry said those words, Peter thought that it would be a good code name for him. Spider-Man, it kinda had a nice ring to it; considering that he can do whatever a spider can.
"Peter, I love you; please don't go" Mary Jane begged. Then Peter brought his hands to rest on the sides of her face.
"Sweetheart, it'll be okay. I need to do this" he said before he kissed her. Then she wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug. She didn't want to separate from him, but she knew that they eventually had to.
"Not alone you're not. I'm coming with you. I'm not going to let my best friend go to war without me. And that's non-negotiable." Harry said. Peter tried to argue with him; but soon enough, he gave in. In the end, he could see the benefit of having his best friend watch his back on the battlefield.
The next day, Harry and Peter went down to the army recruitment office. With Peter currently wearing his Spider-Man uniform. This turn of events, brought up a lot of questions for the military officers that were present. Ranging from, who he was. What was with the costume; and so on. The last question that one of the officers asked Peter, was how old he was. But Peter asked him in return, if that really mattered.
Then the officer told Peter, that without having any information about him, they couldn't let him into the army. Peter was then asked to leave. Peter knew he had to think of something quickly. He needed to join the war effort. Then he remembered something important. Something that was presumably the last card he had left to play.
He said that he could beat and outmatch any and all of their best soldiers. The officer behind the desk found that hard to believe; and frankly, a little insulting. Then Peter told them to call their superiors, and ask them if the words "Super Soldier" meant anything to them. So the officer got on the phone, and started to call the higher-ups.
The phone calls continued; until they eventually reached the commander and chief, President Roosevelt. He asked to speak with Peter; so the officer handed the phone to him. Peter then told the president that he was a Super-Soldier; and that he could prove it, if he had to. This intrigued the president; so a demonstration was set up.
At a later date, the president and a few military officers, watched in amazement as Peter displayed his abilities. He beat every soldier they sent his way. His strength and agility made short work of them. He punched, kicked, and flipped over the soldiers. Some of the soldiers even started shooting at him; but he dodged every one of their shots. Then he fired a line of webbing at each one of their guns, and yanked them all away.
Then he webbed the soldiers to the floor. The president was impressed by his strength and speed. He saw Peter do things like stick to walls, and lift a Jeep over his head. The way Peter dodged his enemies attacks was very impressive. It was like he could predict where they were going to strike; and then instinctively avoid them.
When it was over, the president told Peter that he would let him join the army; under the condition that he tells them his name, age, and how he got his powers. So then Peter told him his name, age, and everything that happened to him at the science demonstration. The president was intrigued and moved by Peter's story.
In truth, Dr. Erskine didn't leave behind any notes on his experiments. He committed everything to memory. In all likelihood, Peter was probably the only Super-Soldier they would ever get. They couldn't afford to waste this opportunity. So the president allowed him to join the war effort.
But Peter said that he would only join up under three conditions. First, if they let him join, then they would have to take Harry too. Second, they would allow him to wear his uncle's uniform. Lastly, they couldn't use his real name while he was in the field. Instead, he told them to call him by the code name of "Spider-Man."
President Roosevelt agreed to these terms; and had Peter and Harry registered as new recruits for the army. When they were finally enlisted, Peter had become the army's superweapon; while Harry became a war photographer. Harry fought alongside Peter when he could; but more often than not, he was stuck taking pictures.
Spider-Man was able to restrain some of his enemies with his webs. But because it was war, sometimes he was left with no choice but to kill his enemies. Those things, made him not sleep so well at night. But he told himself that whatever he did, he did for freedom. Peter and Harry joined the army towards the last year of the war.
In that one year, America has seen more victories than it has in the last couple of years. As a result of this, Peter was the youngest person to be promoted in the army. He had now received the rank of Captain; which meant that he was now given command of his own squad. He also promised himself that when he got leave, he would go see Mary Jane.
It was now 1945; the final days of the war. Peter was currently on a plane with his men. His sixteenth birthday was tomorrow; and he planned to see MJ on that day. At the moment, he was happily looking at the photo of her that she gave him. Army intelligence said that the Germans now possessed a superweapon of their own.
So Spider-Man and his squad, were sent to destroy it. One of the soldiers on the plane, was listening to a radio. Another soldier didn't like that; so he told him to turn it off. Kowalski was the name of the soldier who wanted the radio off. Then Harry took a picture of him. "Your best scowl yet, Kowalski" Harry said.
"We're flying into a suicide mission; and you're taking pictures" Kowalski said in annoyance.
"So they got a superweapon. We got one too" Harry reminded him.
"You mean that sideshow from the recruitment office? He's going to die down there, like the rest of us" Kowalski murmured. They were on approach; so Peter put his picture of MJ in his vest, while everyone else parachuted out of the plane. They landed on the ground; and were immediately being hammered by enemy fire. Harry then got a hurt Kowalski to cover.
"Where's your Super Soldier, Osborn?" Kowalski said in a mocking tone. Then Harry saw an inbound plane.
"There he is" Harry said right before Spider-Man jumped from the plane. The plane then crash landed right through the gate of the German stronghold. Spider-Man landed safely on the ground.
"Alright soldiers; let's take this dump" Spider-Man said before leading a charge. As they began their advance into the fortress, Spider-Man blasted some of the Nazis with his Web-Shooters; and shot the others with his uncle's revolver. Soon they came across a nuclear warhead. "So, that's their superweapon" Spider-Man commented. He then made his way further into the base; where he saw Nazi scientists, working with what only could be described as extraterrestrials.
"Spider-Man, our fortunes have crossed yet again." Said a man in a Nazi Commander outfit, and a scar running down his face; courtesy of Peter.
"Kleiser" Spider-Man said to the now identified Nazi officer. During Peter's one year of the war, he has met and fought Kleiser many times; with him killing a lot of Peter's men. He nearly killed Peter a couple of times too. The last time that Peter saw him, he blew him to Kingdom come, with dynamite; or so he thought. Kleiser gave the aliens the order to launch the warhead.
Spider-Man was beating on the aliens; until Kleiser jumped down and gripped Peter by his left wrist, crushing his Web-Shooter, and punching him into the wall. Peter rolled up his sleeve, and took off the damaged Web-Shooter; letting it fall to the ground.
"This war is over; and you have lost" Kleiser said.
"Haven't you heard. Hitler's dead" Spider-Man responded before shooting a web line at Kleiser, yanking him to him, punching him in the gut, and kicking him against the wall.
"You unyielding fool. look around you. This isn't about Hitler" Kleiser retorted. Then Spider-Man ripped off a piece of railing; and threw it at Kleiser, like a spear. It impaled Kleiser, until he pulled it out. Kleiser Shot tentacles out of the wound; and his body began to shift and morph. This revealed to Peter that Kleiser himself was an alien.
"Now that, is all kinds of wrong" Spider-Man quipped.
When the nuclear warhead was taking off, Spider-Man shot a web line at the missile; and was currently sticking to the side of it. Harry saw him crawling on the missile, with the zoom of his camera. "Pete" he said in worry. Spidey opened a hatch of the missile; and was preparing to drop a grenade down into it. But what he couldn't foresee, was Kleiser crawling on the missile, the same as him. When he reached Spider-Man, he grabbed hold of him and repeatedly punched him in the face.
This went on until Spidey kicked him off the warhead. Then Spider-Man dropped the grenade down the hatch; and jumped off the missile, before it exploded. Harry and the rest of Peter's men knew that nothing could have survived that. They all hung their heads in sorrow for his loss.
The last thing that Peter could think of as he was falling, was his friends and family. He would never get to see his Aunt May, his sister, Harry, or MJ, ever again. He promised Mary Jane that he'd come back to her. He wouldn't be able to keep his promise to her. In the event of his death, he wrote MJ a letter; and he wondered if she'd ever get it. Then he lost consciousness, and fell into the waters below. After that, he sank and drifted into a cold and deep sleep.
61 years later, 2006
For six decades, Spider-Man's body has been drifting through the ocean. Until it eventually merged with an iceberg in the Arctic. There was a submarine that was navigating through the Arctic. It's mission was to find and excavate said body. The submarine was owned and operated by The Strategic. Hazard. Intervention. Espionage. Logistics. Directorate; aka S.H.I.E.L.D. . The crew consisted of a few pilots, a scientist, and Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D. .
Nick Fury was originally a general in the U.S military; until he climbed up the ranks, to get to his current position. He was a black man with an eye patch over his left eye; he wore a military uniform. The scientist with him, was Betty Ross; one of the best minds in the business. The submarine came to a stop, as Betty discovered an obstruction in the ice formation.
They sent a remote controlled drone to investigate. The drone then burned a hole in the ice with two high-powered lasers. Through the drone's camera feed, they saw that they actually managed to find the body of Spider-Man, intact. After his body was removed from the iceberg, it was placed on an aircraft, and brought back to headquarters.
The Triskelion; the military base of operations for S.H.I.E.L.D. . It is a compound that is located on Governors Island; in the heart of New York city's harbor. When the aircraft landed, they brought the body out in a cryo chamber. The reason that S.H.I.E.L.D. was looking for Spider-Man in the first place, was because the world was about to face a global threat; and they needed to extract The Super-Soldier serum from his body.
While they were bringing him further into the base, General Fury congratulated Professor Ross on finding Spider-Man. He told her that he would let her be the one to inform Banner. To which she then thanked him. The cryo chamber was then brought to a lab, where they prepared to thaw Spider-Man out of the ice.
Dr. Bruce Banner was another brilliant scientist who worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. . He is Betty's ex-boyfriend, and head researcher in charge of The Super-Soldier Program. A while back, he attempted to replicate the serum, only to be rewarded by an explosion of gamma radiation for his efforts.
He should've died, but the serum saved his life. However, he wasn't unscaved. The serum was the first thing to be hit by the gamma; altering its formula. When he and the serum made contact, his DNA was forever mutated. Now anytime he gets angry, he transforms into The Incredible Hulk. A huge, fierce, and unstoppable monster.
But he believed that The Super-Soldier Serum could solve all his problems. He was currently sitting at his desk, and being questioned by three New scientist. "Uh, Dr. Banner; you were telling us why we've been assigned to the project." One of the scientists said.
"Uh, right, well, let's see, General Fury. It seems the old guy's running out of patience; so he's beefing up my staff. The Super-Soldier Serum; the same one that was injected into the spider which bit a scrawny fifteen year old boy, transforming him into the peak of human physical perfection. The original file; read it, memorize it." Dr. Banner said as he tossed them the file; before he sat in his chair and rolled over to his computer.
"It's useless thanks to the inept record keepers of 1940. And so the secrets to that serum, died with Spider-Man at the end of World War II" Dr. Banner mentioned.
"Then what data will we be basing our trials on?" A female scientist asked.
Then Banner reached into his desk and pulled out a thick folder. "A four thousand page hypothesis; part of a package you'll be enjoying tonight. You'll note that we have twelve different candidates; for whom we are developing twelve different serums. It's unique for every person. And to keep the chain of custody untainted, only I am authorized to handle their blood samples" Banner stated.
"But then, what will we be doing?" The third and final scientist inquired. Banner then showed them The Rebirth Chamber; it was a giant chamber that would administer the serum. He told them that they would be helping Professor Ross assemble it. He informed them that the schematics for the chamber, were also in their packets. By the end of his briefing, he asked if they had any questions; to which all three of them raise their hands.
"Any questions not about the Hulk?" Banner asked. Then they all lowered their hands. After that, Betty came in and told Bruce that they found Spider-Man.
Spider-Man was now fully defrosted. His uniform was pretty banged up. One of the lenses of his goggles was broken; and the other one was cracked. Both the sleeves of his shirt and his pant legs, had gashes on them; and his mask had holes in it. So now, some of his brown hairs were sticking out of the mask. A scientist went to inspect him; and found something he wasn't expecting. He used a pair of tweezers to pull something out of Peter's vest; it was the photo of Mary Jane. Bruce and Betty were running towards the lab where Spider-Man was being held.
In truth, Bruce was never more excited than he was right now. Finding Spider-Man meant that he could finally get his life back. Then Spider-Man suddenly woke up, and grabbed the neck of the scientist who was examining him. The last thing that Bruce and Betty saw when they turn the corner, was that same scientist, being thrown right through the doors.
Then soldiers with guns entered the lab. But were immediately thrown out of the room, just like the scientist was previously. Betty and Bruce watched the fight as it continued. Peter tried to shoot the soldiers with some webs. But he couldn't, on account of losing one of his Web-Shooters, and the fact that the other one stopped working. So he had to improvise.
He grabbed ahold of a soldier's gun, and punched him in the face. Then he picked up a steel tray, and threw it at another soldier, knocking him down. He used his acrobatics and strength to dispatch his remaining enemies. But the one thing he couldn't see coming, was someone entering the room with a stealth suit.
The suit bended light around the person inside it; making it seem as if they were invisible. The person walked right up behind Spider-Man, and placed a gun to his head. "Easy, soldier. This is not what you think" the man in the stealth suit said ,before taking his mask off and terminating the suit's camouflage.
It was then revealed to be none other than General Fury. Then Spidey turned and punched Fury to the ground, before running out of the lab. "Everyone stand down. Let him get outside" Fury ordered into his comm link. Spider-Man ran through the halls, until he jumped out a window, and landed on the ground, outside. When he got outside, he was shocked at what he saw. He was back in New York; but not his New York. Not the New York that he remembered. Everything about the city seemed bigger, and more colorful.
Then Peter saw a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier land and stop right in front of him. They certainly didn't have those in the New York that he remembered. All of this new technology made him feel out of place. He soon wondered how much time had passed before he woke up. "A lot has changed, son." A voice said from behind.
He turned around to see Nick Fury; now back in his army General uniform. Based on what he said, that led Peter to believe that a lot of time had passed between 1945 and now. The last thing that he could remember was jumping off that missile, and falling. When he woke up, he remembered being in a puddle of water, and being kind of cold.
The scientist in him, came to the conclusion that he must have been in some sort of state of suspended animation. Meaning that this was the future. Meaning that everyone he knew and loved was either dead, or really old. The thought of losing everything, scared him. But then a question forms in his mind. He had to know if everything he went through was worth it. "Did...did we win?" Peter asked.
"We did" Fury answered. Then Peter's legs gave out. All his energy had abandoned him. It was like he finally gave his body permission to relax. Fury caught him as he fell. Seconds after that, a crash team came outside with a gurney. They then took him back inside for medical attention.
Oscorp research facility
Across town, at an Oscorp lab; a certain school field trip was underway. This field trip was comprised of students from a highschool in Brooklyn. Among those students, was a young Steve Rogers, and his best friend, James Buchanan Barnes; aka "Bucky". Between the two of them, Steve would've been considered less popular. Bucky was taller, well built for his age, and probably more noticeable than Steve.
Steve was shorter, scrawny, and sometimes the subject of ridicule. But the one thing that everybody knew about Steve Rogers, was that he had an unbreakable spirit. No matter what hardships life threw his way, or what other people did to him; he always pushed through it all. He honestly believed that things would get better. To him, nothing was ever truly hopeless.
On the field trip, the students saw many experiments taking place; and a lot of cutting edge technologies. At some point, Steve got separated from the rest of the tour group; and wandered into a restricted area of the facility. The lab he currently found himself in, was devoid of people; with machines all over the room. In the center of the lab, there was a giant chamber, with a canister of strange liquid hooked up to it.
Steve then went to read the label on the canister. "Super-Soldier Test Project?" Steve said. Apparently, the U.S government wasn't done with the Super-Soldier Program. For many years, they tried to replicate the serum. They even commissioned large corporations like Oscorp, to help recreate the formula. None of them ever could. No one even came close to making another Spider-Man.
But the CEO of Oscorp, swore that they were close to their goal. They were on the verge of something very promising. Aside from Spider-Man, there was one other soldier in the 1940's, who received a successful prototype version of the serum. The CEO found that soldier, and experimented with his blood; creating a new compound that he called "OZ". Even though he knew that he shouldn't, Steve still chose to step inside the chamber.
He figured that it would be alright, as long as he didn't touch anything. But while he was busy admiring it, the door of the chamber began to suddenly shut; and the liquid from the canister was starting to empty into the machine. Steve was banging on the walls of the chamber; desperately trying to get out. Then gas flooded the chamber; making it harder to breathe.
Steve was introduced to intense pain, as his muscles started to grow, causing parts of his clothes to stretch and rip. He then used his newfound strength to break down the door of the chamber. He damaged a lot of the machinery in his escape. Alarm started blaring; and then security entered the room. They tried to restrain Steve; but he just ended up knocking them out, and exiting the lab.
He made his way back to the tour group; who had been evacuating because of the alarms. When he found Bucky, he had some questions for Steve. Steve used to be small and skinny; but now he was buff, and towering over him. Steve used to look up to Bucky; but not anymore. "Steve? What happened to you?" Bucky asked.
"No time for that now; we've got to get out of here." Steve said before he and Bucky made their way to the exit.
AN: I just wanted to clarify a couple of things. I gave Peter the same sister he has in 616. I know he doesn't have a sister in 1610; and that Teresa's relation to him is still a bit controversial. But I just wanted to give him a relative that wouldn't have been dead since the end of the war; just like Aunt May is, no doubt. I modeled Peter's suit, and some aspects of his life, after the Earth 90214 version of him; it just made the most sense to me. A Spider-Man in World War II; how could I not use Spider-Man Noir.
I tried to stay true to the Hulk's origins. I know in 616, as well as the Ultimate Avengers movie, it was confirmed that it was a gamma explosion. But Ultimate Avengers was based on Earth 1610; and in that version, he was a result of The Super-Soldier Serum. I didn't want to go with one origin, and completely disregard the other. So I decided to adhere to both. Now both origins can be winners.
Neither of them have to be wrong; and that's fair. Picture what happened to Bruce, as the same thing that happened to The Flash. Energy that interacts with chemicals, in this case, the serum; and then having that same irradiated serum, come into contact with Bruce's body. Because that's how it happened in this story.
I had a lot of fun while writing some parts of this chapter. I hope to have even more fun in the future; while I continue writing this story. And remember, if there was something that you didn't like; then that's all you have to say. Don't go the extra mile by using the reviews to be mean. Everyone has feelings that you can hurt. Be honest, but fair.
STAY AWESOME!
