Chapter 1: Hidden FamilyThe classroom erupts with booming conversations as the incoming students of class 1A speak enthusiastically with one another. They stand at their desks, inquiring about each other's names, Junior Highs, and Quirks. The children discuss the power of their Quirks and how they will use them to become the best Pro Heroes they can be.
Katori walks into the classroom with her books held closely to her chest, looking onto the colorful group of kids that explode around her. Her purple eyes land on each and every one of them, feeling their powers and quickly determining which of them holds the most useful Quirk in the room.
She comes to the conclusion that despite there being so many interesting and useful Quirks, three seem to hold Quirks that appear to hold the most power. She concludes the blonde boy with wild red eyes, a mismatched red/white haired boy with heterochronic lidded eyes, and a green haired boy with matching eyes are the three that stand out to her. Explosion. Fire and Ice. And… her eyes squint at the green haired boy who looks up at a brunette girl with wide sparkling eyes. His power confuses her; she can feel his strength, and it is undoubtable, but something about it seems so… familiar.
Her lavender eyes glance down at her books through stray strands of black hair. She looks down at the piece of paper that holds her seat number. Her eyes scan for the desk that holds her number when she notices that she is seated next to the double haired boy. His heterochronic eyes reach hers as she approaches him with a flat unreadable expression. She notices a red scar covering the red side of his face around his turquoise eye, and she wonders how he got such a painful looking injury. She quickly darts her eyes away from the scar, not allowing herself to stare for too long.
"Hello," she says nicely with a smile, trying to put on the extroverted persona she promised herself she would adopt at the new school. "My name is Katori Saito," she says to the boy whose face softens at her sweet tone. "What's your name?"
"Shouto Todoroki," he says with a subtle sigh, unlacing his arms over his chest and taking hers in for a firm handshake. She recognizes the last name, knowing it to be that of the 2nd greatest hero, Endeavor. 'He must be his son. That explains the Fire Quirk,' Katori thinks to herself. She makes a mental note of him and moves her eyes from his, taking in the rest of the class as they speak amongst each other in already developing cliques.
Todoroki watches as the girl's eyes scan each and every one of the students in the classroom, noticing a glint in her eyes as they land on each child, and he wonders what her Quirk could possibly be. "What school did you come from?" the boy inquires, bringing her eyes back to his.
Her eyes widen a bit, not prepared for his question and responds with, "I was recommended," she says not answering the question. She shakes her head, launching her weightless black strands in front of her face, laughing at her awkward response, "Sorry I didn't mean to sound snobbish with that response; you caught me off guard." Todoroki nods simply and she returns the gesture. "I came from—"
"It took you all eight seconds to quiet down," she hears from the doorframe before she can finish. She looks in the doorframe to see a tall lengthy man zipped up in a yellow sleeping bag. "That's not going to work; time is precious," he says with heavy bloodshot eyes and a monotone voice. "Rational students would understand that," he says in an already bored tone. "Hello, I am Shouta Aizawa, your teacher," he introduces as he enters the classroom and unzips himself from the sleeping bag.
Katori lowers her head at his entrance, hiding her face behind her black strands of hair. She places her hand on her forehead, shielding her face from his as subtly as she can. Todoroki notices this and looks at the girl with a quizzical glance, wondering why she would shield her face from their teacher.
"Mr. Aizawa," a pink girl calls out to him, "I don't have a seat!" she says standing at the edge of the room.
Aizawa's lidded eyes disinterestedly scan the room for an open seat when he notices she is correct. He doubles back with more purpose, counting the heads of each student to notice they have one too many students. Katori keeps her head down and only allows him to see a black mop of hair from her. He groans to himself, "damn administration office can't seem to do basic math," he grumbles quietly so the students don't hear.
He perks up at the pink girl, "We'll get you a table from one of the smaller classrooms later," he informs the girl and she smiles at him. "Right, let's get started," he begins, pulling out a blue uniform from his sleeping bag. "Put these on and meet me outside," he says.
The children all line up and pick up their clothes as he leaves them piled on a desk. Katori is quick to grab her uniform and slip past Aizawa into the ladies' locker room without his notice. She places on the fitting blue jumpsuit and meets the rest of the students outside in the training grounds. She stands next to Todoroki and a girl with auxiliary chords for earlobes.
Aizawa begins taking rollcall and she slowly backs away to hide behind the taller students, seeing that he does not look up from the roster, but still keeping herself out of sight from the man. She worries he will recognize her when he sees her, knowing that they have never met, but figuring he might identify her based on her mother's distinguishing features. She has been told she looks so much like her mother, and though Aizawa hasn't seen her since before Katori was born, she wants to play it safe, and figures Aizawa could never forget the image of her mother.
Todoroki watches her carefully, seeing her strange stiff movements and catching on that she is clearly uncomfortable and hiding something that he intends on figuring out.
"Izuku Midoriya," Aizawa calls out, and the green haired boy speaks up excitedly. She watches him carefully, not recognizing the name of any current Pro Hero, but with a power like his, he should be the offspring of someone decently known.
"Minoru Mineta," Aizawa moves to, and a short boy with purple balls on his head speaks up.
"Katori Saito," he calls out to the class and her heart flutters as she ducks her head behind Todoroki.
"Present," she calls out loudly enough for him to hear, and to her relief, he does not look up to confirm. She releases a built-up sigh and Todoroki looks back at her with slightly narrowed eyes, trying to figure why the girl hides from their teacher, wondering where she could have possibly met him, and why she wouldn't want him to see her.
Aizawa begins explaining how they will be demonstrating their Quirks in front of everyone and her heart drops at the announcement. She figured she would have more time before this, and knows that with Aizawa here, he will recognize her right away once he sees her use her Quirk. She begins reciting the speech she prepared when she figured the time would come that her identity was discovered, hoping they understand where she is coming from. Aizawa also mentions that the student to fall in last place will be expelled from the school, causing a growing tension to flow between the students.
The blonde boy with raging red eyes goes first in a simple ball toss. She watches from the back of the class as the boy launches the ball beyond the tree line using his explosion Quirk. She smiles to herself, seeing the Quirk in person. She could feel his power, but seeing it in action is so much more impressive.
Her purple eyes watch as each person before her uses their Quirks in an attempt to throw the ball as far as they can. She watches as Todoroki goes, and curiously he does not use his Fire Quirk to toss the ball, and instead relies on his Ice. She figures he cannot use both at the same time, and since his ice appears to be on his dominant right side, he must use his ice more than his fire.
"Saito, you're up," Aizawa states with a yawn as the fatigue of being here hits him. She keeps her head down, allowing her long black hair to act as a barrier between her face and the lengthy man's eyes. She knows her identity will be exposed as soon as she uses her Quirk in front of him, but figures there is no way out of this.
She takes the ball in her shaking hands, preparing herself to use her Quirk. She takes in a deep breath and turns to Todoroki, looking into his heterochronic eyes for a second. He notices a glint in her eyes as the purple shade turns into a bright red, feeling a part of him draining as she looks onto him. Her black hair begins lifting weightlessly in the air as she moves her eyes to the explosion boy that she learned to be called Bakugo. He returns her stare with a narrowed glare that quickly widens as he feels his body grow heavy. Lastly, her eyes land on the green-eyed boy who looks at her with wide excitement at what her Quirk could be. He feels a tingling in his spine as her red eyes stare him down with her black hair floating above her as if she were underwater.
She turns from the three boys she drained and with a collection of their powers she pulls her arm back behind her head and turns her body to launch it with all her strength. She feels the explosion travelling down her arms as the fire and ice push down her arm before she releases the ball, preparing to use the final power when she hears the words scratching at her head, 'you never want to show them how powerful you really are. They will never trust you if you do.'
She stops herself from using Midoriya's power and releases the ball before she can place further power into her throw, burying the ball deeply into the ground with a loud explosion only a measly hundred or so meters from them.
Aizawa's lidded eyes widen at the sight of her as her black hair falls down her back. She turns to him, finally looking into his eyes for the first time in the day. His grey eyes examine her, seeing her pale skin, her long black hair, her soft features, all resembling her mother in a painful way.
"Saito, to the principal's office," Aizawa states with a stern tone that contradicts the indifferent tone he dawned up until this moment. "The rest of you," he says moving to the group of confused children who watch the change in their teacher's demeanor. "Do something else," he says unenthusiastically as he escorts the raven-haired girl to the principal's office.
Todoroki and Midoriya watch as their teacher walks with the girl to the principal's office, wondering what she could have possibly done to gain such an adverse reaction from their teacher.
"Well, Deku," Bakugo sneers at the green haired boy. "Looks like you're not going home today," he growls grinding his teeth.
Meanwhile, Aizawa doesn't say a word to the girl he accompanies to the office, unable to look at her as the realization of his past regressions have come to haunt him. He knocks on the door of the principal's office with a heavy bang. "Principal Nezu, it's Aizawa," he calls out over the barricade. "It is urgent, Sir," he says with a stern tone.
After a moment of shuffling the mousy principal opens the door with a wide and genuine smile. He looks onto the two raven-haired people that stand before him. "Aizawa, how can I help you?"
The lengthy teacher pushes through the barricade, while the small girl waits in the doorway. Her now purple eyes search the room when they land on the towering pile of muscle that stands in the center of the room with fists resting on his hips, puffing out his large chest as he smiles triumphantly.
Katori's eyes widen at the sight of All Might, feeling a wave of emotions crash into her, making her legs shake and almost knocking her to the ground. She can feel his power resonating in the room and it makes her nauseous. "Hello there, young lady!" All Might states with a large and glorious tone.
She takes in a breath to respond when the principal speaks first, "Aizawa, what can we do for you two?"
Aizawa's hands shake as he refuses to look at the raven-haired girl. "Tell them your name," he commands her as his eyes fixate on the desk.
"Katori Saito," she speaks up quietly.
Aizawa shakes his head, "Your real name," he presses, eyes still fixated away from hers.
She gulps, pressing her brows together with confusion, "I am not sure what you mean."
"Aizawa, what is the meaning of this?" All Might asks, seeing the distress on the girl's face.
"Look at her, don't you recognize her?" Aizawa asks with bloodshot eyes that widen in frustration.
All Might cocks his head to the side with a triumphant smile on his face, "She looks a bit like you, Aizawa," he says with a pressed 'ha-ha'.
"Exactly!" he sneers, eyes now on hers. "She's Akari's daughter," he says and the two Heroes in the room tighten their relaxed stances into tense gasps. "I'm right, aren't I? You're my sister's daughter."
She breathes, closing her eyes for a moment, reciting her next response, as she planned for this conversation hundreds of times. She opens her eyes and looks at him knowing she needs to remain calm and innocent. "Yes, Sir."
"Which means your father…" he lingers on the thought while All Might and Nezu tighten their stances. "Your father is Tatsuo Satsuma. The supervillain known as Hero Killer: Replicant," he says behind gritted teeth. "A former Yakusa turned leader to the largest group of SS-rated Villains in all of Japan."
All Might feels a sting in his chest, remembering the man to be one of two villains to evade him in a fight, almost losing his life to the chilling man.
Principal Nezu quickly moves to his desk to shuffle through some files as they continue to discuss her. "She has his copy Quirk," Aizawa informs them, "But it's stronger than his," he continues with gritted teeth. "She has Akari's eyes, so she doesn't need to touch the recipient to take their power; she just has to look at them." All Might attempts to speak but Aizawa stops him, "It gets worse," he says to the blonde superhero, "Unlike her father, she can use at least three at a time. She managed to handle Todoroki, Bakugo, and Midoriya's powers all at once in the ball toss."
All Might staggers back at this, "Midoriya? Are they alright?"
"Seems like she drains some of their power with Akari's eyes, and copies them with Replicant's," Aizawa says with a sour taste in his mouth.
"I have record of your schooling in Shikishima Private School," the principal speaks up, pulling her file. "Says here you had flawless grades, countless extracurriculars, and a recommendation from a Mr. Haruto Nakamura." The mouse looks up from the paperwork with a sad look on his face, "I assume if we call this school and ask for your name and this recommendation, they will come back with nothing on you?"
She places her head down, lowering her shoulders. "The number listed transfers to a fake line that I set up. It returns to some kid I paid to pretend to be the school and confirm my identity," she explains sadly.
"There were twenty-one students in my class this morning, including her," Aizawa informs him.
The mousey principal shifts through some papers. "Looks like she was the 7th student to be admitted into the school. Though I am sure these documents are also falsified?" he asks looking at the purple-eyed girl who looks away sheepishly. "Why go through the trouble?" Nezu asks her with a soft tone, seeing the sadness in her eyes.
She looks up at the three of them with bloodshot watery eyes. "Being the child of the Number One Villain has set my life up for failure. I have been unable to find proper schooling using my true name, and using falsified documents only got me so far. I have been discriminated against since I was born for who my father is." Her purple eyes water as she looks up at the three of them with a quivering chin. "I want nothing more than to be a Hero and atone for my father's actions against society. The Hero Academy is his Alma Mater, and I figured that if I could come here and learn to be a proper hero, I could help those who have been hurt by his actions the most."
Her throat stings as she continues, "That begins with you, Mr. Aizawa," she says looking up at him. "I never met my mother, but from what I have been told, she was a sweet and beautiful woman who was tricked by my father's manipulation." Aizawa looks away from her as she speaks of his younger sister. "After my birth, she was arrested and killed herself in jail because of my father's control over her mind. He is a monster and I want to do everything in my power to help fight against him and bring him to justice for the crimes he has committed," she says strongly.
She places her head down, falling to her knees as she fists her palms on her thighs, "I knew I would not be accepted into the Hero Academy with my true name and lack of proper education. I grew up an orphan on the streets, so I know I am not a qualified Hero candidate," she says lifting her head with tears streaming down her cheeks, "but I am determined to show you all that I am nothing like my father, and I will be a hero. If you will give me a chance."
Principal Nezu seems moved by her words, but Aizawa and All Might are more cautious of her, as they were directly affected by Replicant's terror. Nezu sees the hesitation in their eyes and figures he has the best solution for them all. "Your words touch me," Nezu begins with a soft tone. "It is prejudice to judge you based on your father's actions and not your own, but do understand we must be careful."
She looks up at them with wet eyes. "I understand, I will do anything," she tells him with a hopeful smile.
"We can call upon Detectra," Nezu says speaking of the lie detecting hero. "She can read the girl, and if she passes, any further bias will be left in this room, never to be discussed further," he says looking at the two men with a pressed look. "Is that reasonable?" She lifts herself to her feet, smiling and nodding happily at the opportunity.
It takes an hour, but Detectra finally arrives in the office that she is forced to wait in, until they have a better understanding of her true intentions. Katori pulls her hair back in a tight bun, feeling her skin getting hot as she waits in the office with shaking hands while she waits for the Hero to come into the room. She fidgets with her fingers, freezing when the woman comes in with a warm smile. She watches as the red-haired Hero's fingers turn into coiled cables that wrap around her chest and waist. Two more uncoiled cables attach to each of her temples with two more latching onto her wrists.
"Try to stay as still as you can," the light green-skinned Hero tells her as the young girl tries desperately to stop shaking. "Ok, let me get a baseline on you," she begins as her eyes turn sideways and yellow. Katori lifts her brows as she watches the black line in her eyes scratch a heartbeat pattern. "I will ask you four yes-or-no questions. Answer the first truthfully, and the second two falsely."
"Yes Ma'am," she says.
"Is your true name Katori Satsuma?" she asks.
Katori looks at the girl's eyes as the black line lifts and falls wildly. "Yes," she breathes out, watching the line dip.
"Are your eyes orange?"
"No."
"Is the sky red?"
"Yes."
"Is your mother still alive?" she asks slowly.
Katori frowns, seeing the question to be cruel since she has to answer it falsely. "Yes," she says stifling back a sniff as she tightens her jaw at the answer.
After a moment of looking into the scratches on her eyes, the red-haired hero releases a heavy sigh. "I have a good baseline, you can ask her anything," she says watching Katori carefully.
"When was the last time you had any communication with your father?" All Might begins. Katori looks at the lie detecting hero, and she nods at her, telling her that she can answer in full sentences.
Katori pushes a wavering sigh, looking at the detector hero as she begins, "A little over ten years ago when I was four," she starts. "I was living in an orphanage at the time. He told me that he was my father, but I had not developed my Quirk by then, so he didn't seem interested in me."
"What did you two discuss?"
She moves to shrug, but stops herself as she remembers Detectra's words to keep still. "He asked if I had a Quirk and I told him that I did not. He paid the administrators at the orphanage to reach out to him if I developed my Quirk and left. I ended up running away from the orphanage with two others the following year and have lived on the streets since. I haven't seen him since that day."
"Why did you join the Hero Academy?" All Might asks again.
"To learn to become a hero and atone for my father's actions against Heroes everywhere," she says still looking at the black lines lifting and falling in the detector's eyes.
She shuts her eyes looking down at her shaking hands. "Do you have any intention for using your Quirk for villainous purposes?" Nezu asks.
She lifts her head, looking at Detectra as she speaks, "No, I would never use my powers for evil. I want to be a Hero," she affirms.
"How does your Quirk work?" All Might asks as Aizawa watches her carefully.
She takes in a deep breath, "My mother, Akari Aizawa had the ability to drain the Quirks of others that she looked onto. My father, Tatsuo Satsuma has a generic copy Quirk. With my mother's eyes, I am able to drain the Quirk from my opponent, and use my father's copy Quirk to use theirs as my own, without the need of touching them."
"How long does it last, and how many Quirks can you handle at once?" Aizawa finally asks.
"It ends when I close my eyes, and I have only been able to do three Quirks at once before my nose begins bleeding, my hair turns white, and I get fatigued." Aizawa tenses his jaw at the mention of white hair, remembering the long snowy hair of the man who corrupted his sweet sister against him.
"You're clearly trained in using your Quirk and handling others," Aizawa begins, "Where did you learn that control?"
Katori thinks for a moment, wondering if she should divulge her story. She looks away from the detecting hero, contemplating the outcome, but figuring that she will need to tell them in order for them to trust her. "I never killed anyone with my Quirk," she affirms truthfully, looking at her shaking hands. She lifts her head and her eyes land back on the yellow-eyed hero, "But I grew up on the streets and came across a lot of low life Villains and thugs. I had to use my Quirk to stay alive," she says vaguely.
Aizawa moves to press her for more information, but All Might places a strong hand on his shoulder, figuring it to be a matter of survival, with no need to press her further if she did not take a life.
"Was there any point in this inquiry where you attempted to deceive?" Nezu asks.
"No," she says as she closes her eyes, pulling her head down at her hands.
The three of them look at the green-skinned hero with expectant glances as she reviews the results of the interview. She pulls the cords from the girl's body as they turn back into her fingers, while her eyes turn back to normal pupiled eyes. She smiles up at the three men who wait with baited breath, "She passed with flying colors. I didn't detect a single lie," Detectra says with a satisfied nod.
Katori looks up at her with wet eyes at the results, thanking her for giving her an opportunity to show them her true intentions.
"Well, that solves that," Nezu begins with a spirited tone. "Thank you, Detectra," he says showing her out.
"She still cannot stay here," Aizawa begins as Nezu shuts the door. "She falsified her documentation; she has not been formally accepted into this school."
"Aizawa," Nezu begins with a warning tone, "I said before that any prejudices would be left in this room in the event that she passed. I understand your concern, but all I see is a child with a strong Quirk and an even stronger resolve to become a true hero. It would be criminal to turn her around," he says with a large smile that she returns. "Welcome to the Hero Academy, Ms. Satsuma," he says handing her an official acceptance letter.
Her hands shake as she looks down at the paper with wide purple eyes. "Thank you, Principal Nezu," she says with a wide smile, taking the letter with shaking hands.
She leaves the room and Aizawa turns to the mousey principal. "I don't trust her, sir."
The small mouse sighs heavily looking to the ground as he is ashamed to admit the same. "I agree," he says and both All Might and Aizawa gasp at his admission. "That is why I agreed to let her stay," he turns to the black-haired man. "I want you to keep an eye on her, Mr. Aizawa. If she has connections with the villainous underbelly, we can potentially use her to locate her father's hiding place, and bring him to justice."
Later that night, Katori walks from the campus through town on her own. She holds onto her bag as she looks down at her feet as they aimlessly take her in no particular direction. She looks around to see that no one is watching her and she has created quite some distance between her and the others.
She turns into an alleyway and begins to make her way towards the less desirable places of town that she knows like the veins on the back of her hand. She begins looking around more cautiously as she tries to see if anyone follows her. Determining that no one is, she turns into another alley, moving a large trash can and crawling into the crawl space that leads to a small staircase. She descends the stairs and knocks on the door three times.
The metal door opens with a loud screech and she steps into the room, smiling when she sees the tall, muscular white-haired man standing before the library. He turns to her and smiles back at her with proud purple eyes. "You're back," he says in a deep tone.
"I'd like to introduce you to the newest admission to the Hero Academy!" she says gleefully, lifting up her acceptance letter.
His smile turns sinister as his lips crawl up the right side of his handsome face. "So, they bought it?"
"I told you Mr. Aizawa was going to suspect me," she says with an unenthusiastic tone, lowering the letter to her side. "He recognized me right away."
Her father brushes his hand across his clean-shaven chin, "Shouta Aizawa," he chuckles with a chilling tone. "I underestimated how much you would remember your sweet little sister," he says with a crooked smile, turning to his daughter. "So then how did you manage from there?"
Katori sighs, looking up at her father's narrowed purple eyes. "They called Detectra, but I managed to overtake her powers to appear as though I passed the test."
"And your hair?" he asks.
"I kept it in a tight bun so it didn't lift while I was using my Quirk. I even managed to keep my eyes purple the whole time like we practiced."
He chuckles, moving his hand from his chin to open his arms towards her. She runs to him, launching herself in his outstretched hold. She wraps her arms around his waist as he holds her around her shoulders. "I am so proud of you, little one."
She looks up at him with loving eyes as they shine up at her father, "We will get him, Dad," she promises, "We will make All Might pay for killing Mom."
