Prologue
Bardock felt his unruly hair blow to the side as he stared into the midnight orange sky of Planet Vegeta. Nearly a decade had come to pass already since the conclusion of the Saiyan-Tuffle War, a bloody war that he had taken part of. Yet for some reason, Bardock felt even more unnerved in this moment than he ever had on the battlefield.
His armor completely battle damaged, the low-class Saiyan pulled his body down the streets. His head burned from a stabbing ache… he must've had a concussion. The shit hurted that was for sure, but it was far from the worst he had dealt with before.
Only a couple of hours had passed since his encounter with Dodoria on Planet Meat and Bardock's appearance spoke wonders for itself, a second skin of dried up blood and dust coating the plethora of scars taking up his body. If the pain itself wasn't bad enough, the site that had awaited Bardock would be forever etched into the Saiyan's mind.
All four of his comrades were dead, their bodies completely soaked in pools of blood as a welcoming present to Bardock. Only Tora, his right-hand man had garnered enough energy to weakly explain how their demise had come to him... "Do-Dodoria," he had said before fading away. Rage mixed with sadness had empowered Bardock, allowing the Saiyan to push past any limits and easily do away with the men sent to ambush him. Dammit, he definitely would've given Dodoria himself a run for his money as well -had he not been caught off guard. He would have to get his rematch with the blob eventually but for now there were far bigger issues coming for Planet Vegeta.
Bardock rubbed the back of his neck as a voice said in his head, "I have given this power of my race to you as a gift Saiyan… so that you can see what I was forced to witness, the devastating end to your people!" Bardock remembered the voice. It belonged to the last inhabitant of Planet Kanassa.
Visions had started clouding his mind. Terrible visions. Visions of Planet Vegeta being completely obliterated by Frieza. Was he going crazy? No, he had been warned of Dodoria's betrayal and it had come to fruition… he had to stop Frieza by any means necessary. Bardock was the only thing that stood between the diabolical Arcosian and the lives of his entire race, as a warrior he couldn't just back down and allow his people to be massacred.
Bardock carried the oldest of his children, six year old Raditz, over his shoulder as he walked towards the entrance of one of the few buildings still left intact. A snarl escaped his mouth, both from the pain of his injuries and the realization that this would be the last time he would see the boy. Even though he still would stand in Frieza's way he was not that ignorant… he stood no chance at beating the tyrant. He was going to die -but he wasn't going out pathetically.
Using his own weight to force himself from falling, Bardock slowly limped his way into the building to see his comrade Neab awaiting him. Neab, a shorter and stockier Saiyan than Bardock, was head of the POD Takeoff Center and arose from his office desk to meet the warrior halfway across the room.
"Ahh, if it isn't my friend Bardock," The scientist exclaimed as he took note of Bardock's appearance. Helping the wounded warrior to a seat, Neab handed Bardock a roll of gauze as he grimaced, saying, "I could have sworn that chatter rose about you and your entire squadron being killed by the inhabitants of Planet Meat but obviously they were rumors... Was the invasion a success?"
"Success? That would be a funny way of putting it," Bardock grumbled as he finished wrapping his dislocated shoulder. "All four of them… dead! Dodoria ambushed my squadron and thought that he could do the same to me." Fury evident in his voice as he spat out the words in disgust, all that Bardock could do was wonder how it all would have gone down had he been there with his comrades -Dodoria would have definitely met his demise then and there, but no… he had failed Tora, Fasha and the others. Fucking weakling.
"I-I'm sorry to hear that my friend," Neab sympathetically remarked, feeling the tension in the room. While he had never been much of a fighter or conquered like his fellow Saiyan, he had lost his son many years ago on a purge-gone-wrong. "What the hell has gotten into Dodoria? Never took him to have the audacity to double-cross Lord Frieza like that…"
"Frieza won't have to worry about shit if I get to the fucker before he does," Bardock barked through gritted teeth as he took a gander at the many PODs in the room with him. "Any updates on Gine? I haven't been in contact since my Scouter exploded back on Kanassa."
"Your mate? Umm, last I checked she was doing much better. Her fever is much lower than originally but the boy, Kakarot I believe, is as healthy as can be and already on his way to his destination." Neab responded after a quick search through the records on his database. Further investigating, the scientist cleared his throat before adding. "Yeah it says here that those contractions are kicking her ass pretty badly but the boy was sent to -let's see…. Planet Arlia, a pretty standard Level-Two planet. Damn he's a carbon-copy of you!"
Bardock smirked as he stared at the holographic image of his newborn son -it was true, the boy was definitely his child and easily could've passed for a miniaturized clone. The same wild head of spiky black hair, the same big onyx eyes staring back at him. While Raditz had inherited the same emotionless facial features as he but Gine's hairstyle, it seemed that Kakarot had done the opposite -those fat cheeks and small nose of his mate's evidently apparent.
'At least the boy's offplanet,' he thought to himself as he turned to see his firstborn son finally awaking.
"Now where's this one here being sent to?" Bardock asked, turning to face Raditz who seemed to be just examining each of the PODs around him as any curious child would. "W-Wait, how the hell did you manage to fuck up your Scouter like that, Raditz?" He retorted, seeing the far worse than fine condition of the boy's fuschia colored Scouter.
"They had us practicing some of the combos they taught us yesterday during today's session… the boy that I was sparring with got a pretty good hit on it but it's fine, he's like super weaker than me!" His son laughed, scratching his head as he told the story. "If you think this is bad, go have a look at him! His dad's gonna have to buy him a whole new one daddy."
"It's no worry Bardock, all children sent out on missions are assigned brand new sets of armor and the latest models of Scouters… it looks like Raditz here is going to some mudball called Earth -should be a cakewalk, it's Level-One." Neab exclaimed, laughing with the small child. "Now we have red, blue, and green scouters, which color suits you boy?"
"Only a Level-One? That sucks… but um, can I have a green one like dad?" Raditz responded, a grin just as huge as his head of hair appearing as he looked over at his father.
"I'll do you one better, Raditz, let me look around through our inventory and see if I can find you a complete set of Battle Armor just like your old man there," Neab said as he took the boy with him to the Armory as Bardock turned to leave. "Go and say farewell to your father."
"Daddy, wish me luck, I love you!" Raditz chuckled as he embraced his father in a hug before turning to follow Neab. "and tell mommy that Kakarot better not have his crib set up in my room if he makes it back before I do…"
He had already racked up quite the reputation for himself -his father would be proud of how far he had come along in such a short ruthless prince of the Cold Empire… Lord of the Planet Trade Organization… and how could he forget? The Emperor of Space were just a few of the titles that he proudly knew himself as.
Frieza brought the glass of wine to his lips as he sat cross-legged in the huge golden throne he had forged from priceless gold on some otherwise useless planet in his collection. Stirring the liquid in the chalice, the Arcosian's eyes seemed glued upon the beautiful site outside of his vessel's window -the pinkish orb that was in reality Planet Vegeta. Such a lovely planet it was… but such barbaric inhabitants it bestowed.
It was pretty disappointing that yet another planet of faithful and powerful warriors was going to have to be obliterated. The Saiyans were definitely near the top of his rank of most powerful races in his military, their thirst for battle and ruthless mentalities were something that you couldn't teach! They knew that though -and that meant that they were bound to get too far ahead of themselves and he couldn't let that happen. An entire squadron of just four Saiyans had taken out Planet Kanassa in less than a week -even some members of his Elite couldn't accomplish that.
He was the zookeeper and what business did monkeys have running an entire zoo?
"Well, Zarbon… isn't it a shame that yet another lovely world has to be destroyed?" Frieza sneared. Taking another sip from his chalice, a sinister grin spread across his face as he looked over at Zarbon. "Take away the flea-ridden monkeys and it could have been a decent military base for our forces."
"Yessir, I very much agree, Lord Frieza," The delicate yet deep voice of the Lukban commander retorted. Zarbon had been Frieza's right-hand man for longer than he could remember, earning his spot in the ranks after turning on his people and helping the Arcosian dictator conquer Planet Lukba -or as it was now known as Planet Frieza #4.
"Of course though milord, even you must remember that the most elegant of roses still have thorns hidden under their petals," Zarbon added, using a hand to swipe a stray strand of his shamrock colored hair from his eyes. "About time we did away with these classeless, ignorant baboons anyways. Cockiness is warranted only when you have the substantial power to back it up."
"L-Lord Frieza! Lord Frieza!" A voice screeched out as one of the footsoldiers of the Frieza Force raced into the throneroom. Bowing down before Frieza in a respectful manner, the alien barked out, "Excuse my disturbance milord b-but the ship's captain told me to instruct you that some Saiyan intruder is approaching the ship. It's that low-class monkey, Bardock!"
Hearing this, Zarbon let out an exasperated grunt as he walked towards Frieza. "Of course Dodoria didn't follow his orders -typical Saboten. Now you, go and find that horned bastard and let him know that Lord Frieza would have a few words with him…" He added, cracking his neck as he spoke.
Turning his attention back towards his superior, the Lukban general bowed in respect as he carried on the conversation they were having. "Sire, I take it that you would have me deal with our unwelcomed visitor? No need to put the wine up either, this will take a few moments at most."
"No, I don't think you will General Zarbon," Frieza's calculating voice replied, his fingertips clanking across the armrest of his throne. As his lips curled into a smirk he spoke again, "Why don't we humor the dirty chimp and ourselves for a bit? Send out the lower ranks and see how long he lasts. Any recruit that brings me Bardock's tail will earn themselves a place in the Ginyu Force!"
Just as soon as the smirk appeared on his face it faded. Filthy monkey. He was going to suffer before he was granted the release of death.
Blue flames roared as Bardock rocketed towards Frieza's Royal Vessel. He was going to kill Frieza right now. The Saiyan's blood boiled in either anxiety or anticipation he didn't know -but he was going to make up for the years of abuse and deception that the Arcosian had orchestrated on his people. After more than a decade of doing the tyrant's dirty work he wanted to wipe out the Saiyan race? Yeah, Frieza was going to have to do that over his dead body!
"Looks like he sent the calvary," Bardock grunted as he propelled himself towards the group of soldiers assigned to take his head off his body. Clearing the distance while effortlessly dodging blaster fire, the Saiyan threw elbows and kicks as he forced himself into the middle of the group. "TAKE THIS!" He screamed as he unleashed a cackling burst of ki from within himself in the form of an Explosive Wave.
"Come on with it then Frieza, you coward!" Bardock mocked as he flared his aura even more. If any of his assailants weren't outright obliterated from the technique they were suffering a slow death at the very least, an entire sea of limbless bodies floating casually in their place. "How is it that you expect to destroy the entire Saiyan race when you don't even have what it takes to do away with a single one of us?" His voice rumbled as he raised his guard at incoming ki blasts.
One by one, members of Frieza's army found themselves struck by Bardock whether it be by one of his powerful energy blasts or by his bone-shattering blows. It seemed as if with each body that dropped, Bardock became both more ruthless and inspired, showcasing the true power of the Saiyan race.
"FRIIIIIIIIEEEEEEZZZZAAAAA!"
"So," Frieza sadistically cackled, watching the battle unfold before him. It had seemed that the Saiyan had in fact powered up quite expeditiously since he had been supposedly dealt with just hours earlier. And this was why the monkeys had to die, there seemed to be no limit to their power when it came to recovering from near death experience. "It seems that it is me that the monkey wants."
"I believe so sire, it would explain why he's screaming out your name like a man gone mad," Zarbon carefully remarked, being wary not to sound too sarcastic. Sure he was doing away with the soldiers effortlessly but those were just the bottom of the barrel, Bardock couldn't even fare well against Cui he believed! "I would gladly deal with this Bardock fellow, if you say the word milord." He offered.
"No need for it Zarbon, how could I not give the monkey his dying wish?" Frieza snickered, finally arising from his seat. With both clenched teeth and fist, the space tyrant turned to his general before speaking again. "Go and prepare my personal transport and then go fetch Lieutenant Dodoria for his punishment."
First King Vegeta had challenged his authority and now this pathetic low-class warrior had lost his damn mind… it was official. Saiyans were definitely much more of a nuisance than they were beneficial.
"L-Lord Frieza, are you actually intending on leaving the ship… I-" Zarbon began to counter, only to be cut off by Frieza, who was already in much too bad of a mood to put up with any sort of backtalk from anybody.
"General Zarbon, are you trying to question my orders?" The Arcosian overlord threatened with a nasty tone to his voice and bearing his canines. Turning to face the Lukban, Frieza instantly rose a finger and instantly began charging his feared Death Beam in a threatening but also very serious manner -and it worked. Knowing that his life was in jeopardy, Zarbon gulped as he backed down, going on about his given orders before the decision to spare his life was changed.
Bardock continually screamed the name of Frieza at the top of his lungs, easily plowing his way through the dozens of soldiers that seemed to be coming with an ending in sight. Normally dodging a punch in a crowd like this would almost certainly mean taking another punch from another assailant but the Saiyan was making his opponents look like kids attempting to fight a master at all fighting styles.
Dodging a punch fully intent on taking the Saiyan's head off, Bardock instinctively reached out to grab ahold of his assailant's arm. Following this up with a knee more than capable enough of bending said arm the opposite way, the stomach turning sound of bones cracking apart didn't even begin to slow down Bardock. He effortlessly let loose a burst of golden colored energy, burning through the skin of its target.
This was nothing new to him, he was a war veteran but better yet he was a Saiyan -his kill list could fill an entire library. He had made a profession out of honing his ruthless battle style and purging… he had actually liked it -still did! It was almost hypocritical when you thought about it -he had done just as Frieza was planning to do to his race to countless other species with no sort of remorse but now the switch was flipped and he was attempting a single man revolt against the bastard. Was this what the Kanassans, Meatians and several other species had felt like when the Planet Trade Organization bore down on their planets?
"Come ouT aND fACE ME YOU COWARD!" Bardock raged on as the cloak of blue flames flared brightly around his body. Forcing his ki to his body, his muscles bulged out like balloons as he powered up as did his voice rise until he was literally roaring out the last few words of his statement.
He felt his heart drop as he watched the hatch of the Royal Vessel slowly opened, yet his guard stayed up and his eyes focused on the spectacle before him. The group of aliens previously wrestling him to the ground immediately backed up, also taking hold of what was happening. He had never before found himself fortunate to behold Lord Frieza personally but times had changed. This had to be it… Frieza was finally going to climb his reptilian ass out of hiding and reveal himself.
'There's no way this Scouter's actually accurate….' Bardock said to himself as the device he wore seemed to shoot up with no sign of stopping. 'Three hundred thousand… four hundred thousand -this bastard can't be that strong, could he? 500,000?'
From first glance Frieza would definitely confuse you as to his power. He stood no taller than five feet and was just as small in the weight department. Delicate pink skin filled every area not hidden by his purple colored battle armor but his tail was what stood out, dangling freely as it seemed to be nearly as long as Frieza's own height. An unemotional expression tainted the Arcosian's face as he slowly made his way over to the traitor before him.
"L-Lord Frieza has actually come out!" One soldier screamed out as he was passed by the dictator. "I didn't think he would busy himself with such a pathetic being!"
"Yeah!" Another snickered, coldly turning to face Bardock as he carried on in disgust. "Now you're fucking dead you monkey! You and your filthy race of baboons can kiss the living world goodbye!"
"Long live Lord Frieza!" The crowd of aliens began to chant as their beloved leader came to stop just meters in front of Bardock himself.
"No way, this monster has already lived for far too long… much too long for my taste buds to be exact!" Bardock began, completely blinded by rage. He was outclassed, yes but giving up was never the Saiyan way. However as he spoke Bardock never seemed to notice that Frieza was paying little to no mind at the man, instead pointing a single index finger upwards to allow a single sphere of red ki to ignite and slowly expand itself at Frieza's will. "You know what? How about I put an end to his time in this realm right fucking now!"
Adding to his already flaring blue aura was a faint white color as Bardock surged his power to its absolute limit, the vibrant colors mixing together as they flared across the Saiyan's body. Paying no attention to the snears and remarks that Frieza's henchmen were throwing his way, Bardock's focus was entirely on Frieza himself as he regulated his breathing to match the rate that energy was pouring into his right hand. This was his ultimate attack, his triumph card -the Riot Javelin. He was putting his all into this attack, it had to have worked or he would fail.
"Listen here Frieza, we all quit! You got it, every Saiyan in your army does!" Bardock spat in disgust as he continued to pour ki into the sphere of flames in his palm. His body burned in pain as the energy was sapped away yet his eyes never seemed to leave Frieza through the agony. "We don't work for the likes of you anymore, never even should have obeyed you and done your dirty work for you! Find somebody else to do that shit for you in the hottest part of Hell,"
It was nearly done, just a few more seconds and Frieza would meet his end. He could almost taste it as the last bit of energy left his body and he almost fainted, had it not been for his willpower. 'Tora, Fasha, Shugesh and Borgos I pray you forgive me but I do this not only for you all but for each and every Saiyan… for a better tomorrow!'
"This is for all the people I've killed in your name, I'll blow you away you son of a bitch!" Drawing his arm back with the sphere of uncontrolled energy, Bardock spat out one more insult as he flung the Riot Javelin towards his foe. "THIS ENDS NOW!" He managed to pant out as the attack charged Frieza's way.
He closed his eyes, waiting for the impact to be heard but it never happened. Gulping, Bardock could hear as Frieza began manically laughing as if he was going mad and as he did so the small ball of ki above him shot to the size of a small sun, effortlessly swallowing the ultimate attack that had so much energy and hope poured into it. How was this possible? A mixture of sadness, anger, disbelief, and horror overtook his body as he knew what this meant. He had failed and he didn't attempt to stop himself from shaking his head in disbelief -he had put his all into that attack! And of course, Frieza's insults felt like haymakers as the Supernova seemed to double in size by the minute… this was the end of Bardock and the Saiyan race, wasn't it?
"Say goodbye to your planet you filthy monkey!" Frieza heartlessly beckoned as he unleashed the titan of a ki sphere at Bardock.
Bardock could do nothing but watch as the Arcosian's Supernova dove towards not only him, but any soldiers that had carelessly stood in its path along with Planet Vegeta. He could do nothing, no time to scream or react as the attack overtook his body, engulfing him in what seemed like a lifetime supply of pain and heat. As it dug into his skin, flesh burnt to nothingness and his armor scorched itself free and into ashes. Not stopping there the Supernova continued it's path, making impact with the outer core of Planet Vegeta as Frieza's maniacal chuckle echoed through the vacuum of space.
However, before he could fade away completely, Bardock opened his eyes and seemed to be in a completely new place. The grass was a teal blue color and the sky shimmered a lime green color. Was this Hell? Was it another vision? As it slowly faded to black, all that Bardock could notice was a Saiyan (he could tell by the tail dangling freely) glaring daggers at… Frieza? The untamed mane of waist-reaching hair was evident of who this mysterious warrior was but it couldn't be! His son was only six years old, not a fully grown man.
'Raditz?' He thought to himself, yeah this had to be him! Adorned in a blue colored uniform and a orange undershirt, his son assumed a battle stance at who he assumed to be Frieza -or whoever this imposter was. 'M-My son, he's facing Frieza! Is this the future?'
As the horizon faded to black, Bardock coughed up a bit of blood but a smile curled on his face. Sure, Frieza had killed him but he had great faith in the fact that his blood would eventually avenge not only the death of his father but of the entire Saiyan race. Feeling his body melt away into the Supernova the last word that Bardock ever said wasn't heard by anyone but himself…
"RADITZ!"
At the same time as the book of Bardock seemed to close, Raditz's was just getting to a start.
Nearly a hundred thousand light years away from Planet Vegeta, on a planet known as Earth, Son Gohan was going about his daily jog through the wilderness. While it would appear that he was the same as any other Earthling, this Gohan fellow wasn't your typical elder. He was one of the toughest people on the face of the planet, a master of martial arts trained by the legendary Turtle Hermit. Nearing back towards his shack, the Human looked up at a meteor shot through the sky. Judging by the vibration that shook the ground seconds later, he concluded that it had landed not too far from where he was.
Gazing into the crater that had been created, Gohan was in for quite the surprise. This wasn't your everyday shooting star -shit it wasn't a shooting star at all! It looked to be some sort of spaceship, and it opened as soon as the Human approached its vicinity. He was more than capable enough of handling himself so Gohan instinctively threw up a fighting stance prepared for the worst. However, to Gohan's bewilderment, in place of the nuclear device he had been preparing to find was a young child that had to be no older than seven years old, the thick mane of hair he harbored looking almost unnatural to Gohan.
'It's only a child?' Gohan's inner thoughts pondered.
He couldn't be certain but something told him that the boy wasn't Human, if the strange armor that he wore didn't show that then the strange tail he had was evident enough. Where were his parents? Where had he come from? Before Gohan could ever get close to the sleeping youth, a pain registered in his cheek as he jerked back -he had been struck by the prehensile tail that the young boy possessed. Recovering, Gohan's eyes met with the Saiyan child's coal black eyes as they shot to life. Neither one of them blinked or made a move, waiting to react to whatever was going to ensure.
Gohan hunkered down, approaching the juvenile warrior slowly, never letting his eyes wander. Before he could get too close though, moving quicker than any child that he had ever seen, the boy shot out a small fist at the mysterious man before him. Too close to react, Gohan was struck with a fistful of knuckles crashing into his face… and it actually hurt! It wasn't enough to actually cause him pain but the fact that a six year old had that much power was surreal. Not letting up, the boy pounced forward, getting into his own battle stance.
"That's quite the punch you got there buddy, if you were a tad bit stronger I would've busted my nose for sure," Gohan complimented, an uneasy laugh letting loose in an attempt to ease the boy's nerves. "Your fighting form has a few flaws, I wouldn't advise fighting me. With my experience all it'll take is a few well-placed blows and you'd be out cold."
"*Cúá légsígóy vöp[1]*... I am Raditz, a member of the Saiyan race," Raditz growled, his soft voice rising as he spoke until he was screaming the last of the words. "If it's a fight you want, you won't leave this one alive!" He added, pouncing forward with killer intent.
Just as he entered Gohan's proximity, Raditz felt his fist whiz through what he assumed to be the old man. 'What trick is this alien using? I could've sworn I had struck him.'
"That was the Afterimage technique my boy," the voice said, Gohan suddenly reappearing behind the Saiyan. Before Raditz could even react, a quick chop to the top of his spinal cord made everything go black.
With the boy temporarily immobilized, Gohan explored the space pod that he had crashed in. Searching through the debris, Gohan read the message that had been rashly etched into what felt like a sheet of cloth.
In the handwriting of who he assumed to be Raditz's guardian, the letter read, "The following message is for my son, Raditz, and whoever comes across him. When you eventually come across this my son, it is likely that I met my end at the hands of Frieza, a member of the feared Cold Empire.
Sadly, not only was I alone but the entire Saiyan race and our home planet, Vegeta, was completely destroyed. Yes, you are the last Saiyan on the face of the universe I am afraid. Now for any guardian you find on this wasteland, originally as a child of our race -you were sent to this planet to eradicate all signs of life on it so that Frieza could sell it to another buyer but no, fuck what he wants you to do, we have done that monster's bidding for far too long.
I want you to not follow in our lead, as it leads only to death. Instead I demand you to get stronger on this planet and defend it as if it was Planet Vegeta itself. We are Saiyans, each battle we partake in and survive gradually increasing our strength -this is why Frieza felt the need to completely destroy our people, he feared that we would overtake his place. He took our loyalty and paid us back in our blood. We failed but you will one day become strong enough to rid the universe -I've seen visions of it. You will avenge us all, the entirety of our race depends on you.
Now please son, please have pride that you are a Saiyan warrior but never let that pride blind you as overconfidence leads to mistakes and your eventual downfall. Never forget your origins and please become strong enough so that you someday avenge us all, this is your destiny to defeat Frieza. All of your Saiyan necessities are enclosed in this POD and information on knowing everything about your race that you can. You are the last of a dying race and the thing that Frieza, who the universe fears, fears more than anything -the legendary Super Saiyan.
Take care, my son. Thank you to whoever it is that watches over my child and helps him become the young man that he is destined to be,"
This was all that Gohan had to know, such a tragic story. It was final, he would take the young boy under his wing and help him do as his father hoped -but the first thing he had to do was break it to the Saiyan what he had just learned.
