Ring Ring Ring. Ash slowly opened his eyes to the sound of his alarm clock ringing. He quickly turned off his alarm to shut off the annoying noise before getting ready to go back to sleep.
Then his eyes shot wide open again as he shot out of bed and quickly ran around his room getting dressed to go to Oak's lab.
" Crap need to get ready, need to get ready today is the day!" Ash all but chanted as he ran around grabbing his hat and shoes after putting on his jacket.
He made his way downstairs to greet his mom and get some food before charging off to Oak's lab. You can't skip breakfast, one of the most important meals of the day.
"Morning Mom, what are you making right now?" Delia simply chuckled when she saw him practically charge out of his room.
"Good morning dear. I'm making us some hash brown, eggs, and bacon." Ash was about to reply but was cut off by his stomach's grumbling.
"Sorry but is it done yet? I'm kind of hungry and have to get going soon." He chuckled a little embarrassed from his stomach grumbling so loud.
" Yes Ash, I already have your plate ready, you just need to eat and make your way to the lab after your done."
"Thanks mom, your the best."
"I know dear."
He scarfed down his food quickly while receiving a light scolding from his mom about how he should eat properly. He didn't understand why though. He was at home, it wasn't like he was being rude to anyone?
Once he was done he bid his mom a farewell and made haste to Oak's Lab. He got there a bit late due to his housing being the furthest away out of the starting trainers. Luckily it wasn't by too much, only about 4 minutes behind schedule.
Knocking on the door he quickly dusted himself off before getting ready to apologize for being late. The door opened so suddenly that it startled him.
"Well if it isn't Ashy-boy, you're late." The person at the door wasn't Professor Oak but his grandson Gary Oak.
While he and Ash were normal friends at first. Gary began to become a little arrogant due to his grandfather's status and began belittling everyone. Ash wasn't really a fan of that so he started firing insults back.
Naturally that led to back and forths between the two of them quite often. While the two of them denied their friendship, both of them knew that they still were, despite how they annoyed each other.
" Yea, sleep through my alarm for a couple minutes before waking up. Mom also made a decent sized breakfast before I left, so I took a bit longer." Gary simply chuckled as his explanation,
" You're just as bad as a Slaking. Especially how your stomach is a bottomless pit. I still don't understand how you aren't as big as a snorlax." Ash simply growled before firing off his own retort.
" You're one to talk, remember when Oak brought those puffins from sinnoh." Gary's face flushed from embarrassment before matching Ash with a glare.
"That was on-". Their banter was cut off when Professor Oak rounded the corner.
"Ahhh, Ash you're here. Come in, come in, it's hot outside. Would you like anything to drink?" Oak asked in a jovial tone.
" I'd like some water if you don't mind, thanks Professor. Also can we go and get my starter now?" Oak chuckled at Ash's excitement. Despite how the boy had matured when helping around his lab, he maintained some of his childish antics.
"Yes Ash but about your starter, I'm Afraid it won't be one of the traditional starters most sponsored trainers receive." Ash grew a frown when he heard Oak's words.
" Professor, what do you mean? Did everyone else come early to pick their starters?" Ash asked in increased worry.
"I'm afraid so, but I do have an alternative option if you don't wish to wait a week for a new set of starters." Ash grew a contemplative frown before making up his mind.
"I'll go with the first option." Oak nodded and motioned for Ash and Gary to follow him into the back while handing Ash his water.
"The pokemon I'll be giving you is a Pikachu Ash, but be warned - it is very friendly. I caught him outside feeding on the wires. Gave my old dragonite a surprise when it suddenly lashed out at him." Oak mentioned with a chuckle at how surprised his Partner was at being charged by a tiny mouse.
" Ok Professor, I'll be careful of Pikachu, but he can't be that bad can he?" Oak merely shook his head before enlarging the pokeball and releasing pikachu.
The yellow mouse appeared out of the ball in a white light. He looked around before locking eyes with Ash as he was in front of the boy. When the boy smiled at him he just looked away with an annoyed look on his face.
" Pikachu, the boy in front of you will become your new trainer. I hope for both of you to become good partners." The older man addressed the little mouse in a neutral tone.
Pikachu just looked at the man when addressed and listened to what he said. He only grew more annoyed with the man. He was just trying to get a snack and know he had to go on some adventure with a kid. He turned back to size up Ash before letting out a low "Chaaa." At least the kid looked competent.
"Hey Pikachu, I'm going to be your trainer, Ash. I hope we can get along." He offered a hand to Pikachu with a smile on his face.
Pikachu assessed the boy before shaking his finger. It's not that he couldn't shake his hand or anything.
Oak nodded his head before walking to a table that was in the corner of the room picking something off of it before making his way back.
" Here Ash, this is your Pokedex and some Pokeballs. Your pokedex comes with a myriad of features such as viewing information on pokemon moves and types, and a map. Oh and it also can be used as a way of identification." Ash happily grinned at the Professor before grabbing his things and thanking him.
"Thanks professor, I'll do my best to go to the league and train my pokemon. Now I'm going to go say goodbye to some of the pokemon in the ranch. Come on Pikachu, want to walk or go in your ball?" Pikachu quickly made it known his disdain for the circular object. It felt cramped in there.
Ash nodded to the professor before noting Gary left sometime ago and headed off to bid his farewell to the pokemon he has taken care of for years. During his walk throughout the ranch and his greetings with the other pokemon, Pikachu started to think the kid wasn't that bad, but wasn't going to trust him just yet.
After walking for a couple of minutes to reach the pond most of the Pokemon he knew relaxed at, he was glad to see them there. He greeted the other 'mons receiving one in return before they returned to their business. The little poliwag he knew since he was a kid waddled his way up to him, tripping on the way there.
His snickering annoyed the water type causing him to shoot a weak water-gun at his friend. Giggling at the face Ash made when soaked before he started to rub his face against his leg in an attempt to hug him.
"Hey it's good to see you too buddy, but I'm going to be leaving today." Ash's proclamation caused most of the pokemon around the clearing to turn and face him in curiosity and sadness. After all, he was their caretaker and fun to be around at times.
At poliwag's whine, he continued his explanation. " I'll be traveling around Kanto as a pokemon trainer know, remember I turned fourteen a couple weeks ago?" Poliwag's face lit up in understanding before crying "Poliwag" and jumping up and down in place.
Ash tilted his head in confusion before pikachu nudged his other leg and pointed to the pokeballs hooked to his belt. Ash's eyes lit up in understanding what was going on.
"You sure you want to leave with me? You won't be at the ranch that often anymore and you'll be doing a lot of training and traveling with me. Are you ok with that?" Poliwag thought for a second before nodding its head.
Ash took a ball off of his belt before holding it in front of poliwag. The tadpole pokemon tapped his head against the ball and was caught almost instantly. The clicking of the ball signaling the capture had been successful. Ash grinned at having one of his childhood friends join his team before bidding the rest of the pokemon farewell.
As Ash was making his way back home from the ranch, a massive dragonite, standing at 7'5 landed in front of him. Pikachu growled in annoyance at recognizing the dragon. The dragonite stared at Ash for a moment before letting out a joyful cry and picking up the boy and squeezing him in a massive hug.
" Alright Alright, put me down dragonite!" He yelled out in laughter as the jolly giant put him down after spinning around.
" It's good to see you too dragonite." He received a happy cry from the giant. " But i'm not going to see you for a while, tell the others that I'm going to go out as a pokemon trainer today and won't be back for some time. I'm going to miss you girl." He murmured with sadness evident in his tone.
The gentle giant nodded sadly in understanding before waving goodbye to notify the rest of Oak's pokemon. They all enjoyed being around Ash and would miss him not being around.
He finally made his way past Oak's lab notifying him that poliwag was going to be coming with him. Oak nodded, figuring that much out before waving him off to say his goodbyes to his mother.
Scene Break
Ash finally made it back home to show off his new friends to his mom. And to pick up his bag and some extra things he'd left in his room.
"Mom I'm home, and I brought friends." He called out, both his pokemon being on both sides of him as he released poliwag when he was just outside.
"Ohh Ash! You're back so soon, I thought you would've had a couple battles with Gary and the others." Ash chuckled in embarrassment at that being what he would have done if he got there on time.
" Mom, you know I don't really like Damian much. He is always such a jerk. Plus I barely even know the other guy. The only person I would battle is Gary but he left before I could challenge him. "
Delia shook her head at his antics. She never really saw Ash interact with the other boy much, and Damian was a mean kid to be fair.
" By the way, Ash, I finished packing your things in you bag for you, so all you need to do is go get it from his room." Ash thanked his mom before running to his room to grab his stuff.
Ash entered the living room to hear "Pikaaaaa" be moaned out as he saw his mother massaging his cheeks. His eye twitched at how relaxed he was being around her as Poliwag sat on the couch jumping up and down on the pillows.
" Okay guys let's go now I've got my stuff ready." Ash called out, receiving a stink eye from Pikachu for cutting his massage short and happy cry from Poliwag as he jumped off the couch, running up to him. Ash returned him into his ball so the little guy wouldn't tire himself out.
Biding his mom farewell, Ash made his way out the house and onto route 1. Hopefully he finds something cool on the way to Viridian.
Scene Break
Traveling on route 1 wasn't very fun right now. Not only have they encountered no pokemon, Pikachu is still keeping his little attitude up. He was starting to get hungry too.
" Hey pikachu, I'm going to stop for a bit under the tree. I'm going to make us some lunch." Pikachu simply nodded to show he heard.
Stopping under a shaded tree, he released poliwag before taking some food out of his pack for them to eat. His mother made some poke-food for them, which they wasted no time in eating once they tasted it, and a sandwich for him.
While eating, Ash took out his pokedex to scan his newest teammates. " Hey guys, I'm going to scan you with the pokedex to see your moves, please sit still for a second." Poliwag nodded while pikachu was resting against the tree waiting for the other two to finish their meals.
[ Poliwag, the tadpole Pokemon. Its ability is Water Absorb. Its moves are bubblebeam, Mud Shot, Hypnosis, Water gun, and Pound.]
Ash whistled, impressed by Poliwag's moveset. "Wow buddy, that's impressive. I didn't know you knew all those moves, you're pretty strong." Poliwag let out a happy cry at the compliment, and jumped into Ash's lap. Ash then began to scan the cranky mouse.
[ Pikachu, the mouse Pokemon. Its ability is Lightning Rod. Its moves are Thundershock, Quick Attack, Thunderwave, and Agility. ]
Ash simply nodded to pikachu before looking through the list of moves they could learn, taking note of moves that may be of use later on. After all, they needed to get a little training in. And new moves would help deal with their weaknesses or variety.
Ash was cut off from his thoughts when he heard some rustling in the grass near him. He turned over and saw a spearow making its way towards him. It seemed to have a malicious glint in it's eye that rubbed Ash the wrong way.
" Poliwag use mudshot to keep it grounded!"
Poliwag jumped out of Ash's lap, and with surprising speed launched at the spearow while throwing mud at the bird's wings weighing it down. Before it could shake the mud off and take into the air Ash called a new command.
"Poliwag us Hypnosis, quickly!"
Poliwag started to rotate the pattern on its stomach while releasing psychic waves to lure it to sleep. The spearow stopped struggling and stared at Poliwag's stomach, freezing for a moment, before slumping to the ground asleep.
"Pokeball go!"
The pokeball went flying at the spearow, and hit him, sucking him inside with a white light. It wiggled around for a bit before finally coming to stomp and making a clicking noise, signaling it has been caught.
" All right! We caught a spearow, good job poliwag!" Ash called out while poliwag jumped up and down in joy before running to Ash and cuddling his leg.
Ash let out a chuckle before patting poliwag on the head before returning him to his ball. He started to gather his things and left quickly after remembering there was a flock of spearow around.
After a few hours of trudging through the grass, up and down hills, and past pokemon, he finally made it to viridian. He was stopped by an officer Jenny asking to see his identification because of some pokemon thieves wandering around recently.
Once he showed her his pokedex and it spouted off some info about him, she left him to his own devices. He had to walk down to the pokecenter to check in for the night.
"Hello, welcome to Viridian City Pokecenter. How may I help you?" Ash smiled at the Nurse Joy behind the counter.
" Hi Nurse Joy, I would like you to check my pokemon please, I just caught a spearow and I want to know if it's ok after our battle. Also I would like to have a room for the night. " Ash requested while handing her his pokeballs.
" Of course, here's the key for room 14. I'll have your pokemon sent to your room when I'm done with their checkout." Nurse Joy took the pokeballs while handing him a chain with a key and a ball with the number 14 on it.
Ash nodded in thanks before walking towards the room to rest. As he made it to bed, thinking on how to train his pokemon, he fell asleep almost as soon as his head hit the pillow.
I'm having Ash be a bit more mature in this story than canon. He actually studied a bit, despite how painful it was for him to do so. Hm helping Oak around the lab also was good practice for dealing with pokemon and learning about their types and moves. I also decided to have the poliwag he played with at that summer camp join his team. After all, he spent more time at Oak's lab and would've probably become even friendlier with it.
Anyways thanks for reading it and if you enjoyed it leave a review. Also feel free to suggest pokemon Ash should catch in this story. If I feel like it fits I'll add it in along side the others I have planned.
