A/N: I'm finally getting back to my roots with a mystery/thriller story. I will be limited on my author's notes in this story, so don't expect one for every chapter (which is probably a good thing). Also, due to my schedule with my dissertation and job, I'll post chapters as I get an opportunity! I posted the first chapter a few months early to give y'all something to look forward to, though the remaining chapters will be posted sometime in December for my "Christmas gift" to my readers.😊 I hope you enjoy. And buckle up. Like always, you never know what will happen in an AquaTurquoise story… Look at the summary. As usual, no one is safe. 😉 (I can hear the yelling already, haha.)

Chapter 1: The Nefarious Nine

Some years ago, in a tumultuous alternate realm simply called X-Space, a group of nine villainous dark magic wielders called the Nefarious Nine ruled the realm with fear, torment, and chaos. They did not distinguish among the elderly, the able-bodied, the weak and sick, or even the children; all were capable of being murdered or sacrificed as they saw fit. The Nefarious Nine also sacrificed animals to the Mosaic Being (nicknamed Mosaia for short), which was seen as a sign of respect for the demonic god.

People in X-Space lived in constant fear, wondering when they would be next on the list of the horrible ennead. Again, when, not if… Non-magical people in this realm were seen as disposable, as proven by mothers ripped from their nursing babies, or educators pulled from their classes, or an elderly couple separated during their final sleep together… Innocent people were slaughtered as a form of both ritual and warning, leaving the citizens of X-Space terrified, riddled with anxiety, and desperate to escape. No one had ever successfully fled the realm, though several had tried. But the Nefarious Nine were always a step ahead…

These nine beings were mysterious creatures, each with a number and the title of "Star." For example: First Star, Second Star, and so forth. Each came with a specialty that helped add to the organized chaos of the desolate realm. However, none was as terrifying as the Ninth Star.

The Ninth Star was an enigmatic member who murdered far more than speaking. The creature was mostly genderless or androgynous, able to shapeshift into any form desired. As the Ninth Star was ruthless in ruling and nature, no one dared call the creature "he" or "she." Instead, "it" was usually used, because no one of any human nature would cause as much devastation as the evil being did. Even some of the other Stars were wary of the member, especially some of the senseless killings and destruction done on a near daily basis.

All Star members wore dark robes with red hoods, their snakelike eyes peering from the hoods. The Ninth Star stood apart from the others because of a hellish crow that sat upon its shoulder, the beady red eyes glaring at those who looked upon the enigma. Evil symbols were etched into the robes, gleaming with a bright fiery light in the darkness of the atmosphere.

For centuries, they were undeterred. No one dared attempt to overtake them…until the Luminos infiltrated the realm. The Luminos were a group of Light Magic Wielders from undetermined origins, who were sent in on a mass destruction mission against the Nefarious Nine. Using their combined powers and abilities, eight of the nine members were destroyed, but somehow, the Ninth Star escaped and practically disappeared into thin air.

For years after that, no one heard anything about the Ninth Star. The whereabouts of the creature were undetermined, save for a few scarce rumors in other realms. However, one day, the Conjuror's Board received a reliable hint from an anonymous source that the Ninth's Star's unique dark magic trail had finally been picked up in a magical realm called Valestrai, and not long after, an open investigation began once more.

Needing active assistance from reliable magic wielders, Malango the Magnanimous contacted none other than the Protectors of the Mystic Isles, explaining the situation, and requesting their help.

And thus, a dangerous and mysterious journey began once more…

To be continued…
