Kuvira sighed as she bent the piece of metal she had stolen from the guard during a room check. The idiot was wearing a metal bracelet and didn't even think to remove it. She was either forgetful or just plain stupid. Neither mattered to Kuvira because all she knew was that the piece of metal was her saving grace.
Kuvira closed her eyes and focused her bound hands on the metal. She needed to turn it into a razor to get the job done. She could feel the power in her hands as she bent the metal. It had been exactly a year since Kuvira had felt the sensation of having a piece of metal bend to her will.
It felt good. She felt powerful. A small smile spread across her pale face. She opened her eyes as she gripped the now razor like metal in the palm of her hand. She rolled up her left sleeve and sucked in a deep breath. Tears welled up in her eyes as the words, memories and constant torment of the people's cries as she destroyed cities and killed their family members, replayed in her brain.
"I can't live like this. I don't deserve to live. Not after all those people I killed," Kuvira said to herself.
She didn't even react as the crimson flowed down her arm, staining her cell floor. Tears fell from her eyes as she closed them, relishing in the feeling of the blood running down her arm.
She continued to make more cuts across her wrists until her vision got blurry. Kuvira didn't know if it was night or day. It was hard to tell in solitary confinement. She could only estimate the time based on when she got served her meals.
It had been quite some time since she was given lunch so perhaps it was close to night. It was in moments like these that Kuvira missed her flat back in Zaofu. She always loved to look at the stars. They were the most beautiful things she had ever seen. She wished she could see the stars one last time.
She smiled as she saw Baatar in front of her.
"Take my hand," he said. "Let's have one last dance." Without hesitation, Kuvira took the hand extended to her and let him pull her up.
Baatar pulled Kuvira in close as she rested her head on his shoulder, taking in the sweet scent of his cologne. "I never thought I'd see you again," she whispered. "I know and I'm sorry. It's just that after having a spirit weapon fired at me by the hands of my fiance, it's only natural that I take some time."
"I'm sorry Baatar. I loved you. I still do I just wanted to save my kingdom. Is that so wrong?" Baatar pulled away from Kuvira and looked her in the eyes. "Was saving the Earth Kingdom really worth sacrificing the life we had? The life we could have had?"
Kuvira hung her head low. "I'm sorry." "It's okay. That doesn't matter anymore. None of this matters. Goodbye Kuvira," Baatar said as he started to fade away.
"No! Baatar! Come back!" Kuvira said softly as she slipped into unconsciousness.
Korra skipped into the Republic City Police Department. She was on her way to see Mako about those bandits that kept terrorizing Republic City ever since Kuvira's arrest.
Mako figured since they kept managing to slip from under the department's fingers, Korra could instill the fear of the avatar in them.
"Hey Mako." "Hey Korra. You look great. How's girlfriend life?" Korra blushed, thinking of the dark haired beauty waiting at home for her.
It had been six months since she moved in with Asami so they could spend as much time together since Asami was always busy during the days as CEO of Future Industries and as Korra put it, "The Avatar's work is never done." "It's great." "I can see that. You look happy. Really happy and I love that for you." "Thanks. So about those bandits."
"They come out at night specifically in the lower ring between the hours of ten and midnight but they rob lonely unsuspecting people during the days as well and for some reason we keep missing them," Mako said through gritted teeth.
"Well don't worry. I'll catch them. You can count on me."
Just then a man ran through the department and pushed open the Chief's door.
"What the-" Chief Beifong was cut off as the frantic man spoke. "Kuvira attempted suicide."
"How is she?" "I don't know. I just got word from one of the guards on duty." "I'm calling Su. Have a car ready to take me to the prison hospital," Lin commanded.
"Chief is everything alright?" Mako asked as he and Korra entered her office. She hung up the phone and looked at Mako with the most serious expression he had ever seen. "Kuvira attempted suicide a few minutes ago."
The two gasped.
Korra, Lin and one of the Senior Deputy Guards from the Earth Kindgom Prison rode to the Prison.
Although the news was unsettling to Mako, he refused to go to the prison. Kuvira didn't deserve his sympathy when she had none for all the people she hurt and killed. He knew why Lin had to go but he didn't know why Korra felt the need to.
•••••••••
An hour later and Korra, the Senior Deputy Guard and Lin stood outside of Kuvira's hospital room. The pale woman laid in the hospital bed with both her arms in restraints. Korra could see the series of bandages that covered Kuvira's left arm.
The doctor approached the three. "So her vitals are normal and she's stable. She lost a lot of blood so we had to do a blood transfusion. We gave her sedatives so she might be asleep for a few hours. Visiting hours are over but the three of you are welcome to wait for her to wake up."
"No. I'll be back. I want to be the first one you call when she wakes up. Are we clear?" Lin asked.
"Yes Chief," the doctor said.
"You. Who was the guard who found her?" "Azan." "Is he still on duty?" The Senior Deputy Guard checked his watch. "Yes." "Take me to him." "You coming?" Lin asked Korra. "No. I'm going to stay. I don't want her to wake up alone."
Lin nodded and she and the man left Korra alone. The doctor opened the door to Kuvira's room and Korra took a seat.
Korra didn't recognize the woman lying in restraints in the hospital bed. She wasn't the strong dictator who earned the nickname 'The Great Uniter'. Instead, she was an empty shell of a woman.
