A/N - I wasn't actually planning on posting this on here, but since it would seem the Owl House tag finally has Raine as a character I've decided I'll cross post it here as well. Hope you all enjoy! I'll get back to my typical fanfiction… eventually. I actually drew inspiration from both WBUT and an unwritten fic, so I do hope you all enjoy this!

,,,,,

The Raine Whispers. The covenless bard. Five foot eight, short mint hair, glasses, and with their violin in hand they could spawn a crowd to enjoy their tunes.

Then there was their partner, Eda. Edalyn Clawthorne on the other hand was six foot three without her heels, had long fiery orange hair, and donned the most beautiful golden eyes Raine had ever seen. A holder of many admirers, that was for sure.

And they were lucky enough to call her their girlfriend.

It warmed their heart just getting to see her.

They were really in love.

But, romance had its ups… and its downs.

Recently for them though, Raine and Eda had more downs than ups.

Raine was well aware this wasn't healthy. Eda was… difficult to get to talk. Better to say she didn't talk, period.

More and more often spending time with Eda got suffocating. They just wanted to be there for her, she was miserable after all.

Eda was cursed. When they were 15 Eda was cursed and… Raine wasn't sure exactly how bad it was. They had an idea but the only things they knew about the curse was Eda often would transform into an owl beast when stressed enough and that her golden elixirs were the only things to stop it from happening.

Titan, Raine just wished they could hug Eda forever and finally get through that it was okay to talk to them. That nothing about her was going to make them leave her.

But, as much as they wished they could, they knew it was impossible.

The thought in itself at first, not being with Eda, felt more suffocating to Raine than spending time with an Eda in agony who wouldn't let Raine in. But… They assured themself that they'd be fine.

They would be.

Raine could handle themself.

Their life was a mess… they were nearly 25 and still hadn't joined a coven. Eda was so set on the idea of never joining one that Raine couldn't help but follow suit.

But even that was getting smothering. The dirty looks they'd get in public. The shade thrown towards them whenever they'd bump into old classmates.

Raine loved the idea originally, but they weren't like Eda. Raine focused a lot on bard magic. The bard coven was still sitting there waiting for them to join.

And recently they'd finally made a decision.

They'd join.

But first they had to do something else.

They'd come to the conclusion a few weeks back that they'd break up with Eda. After being with her for a decade.

They were going to break up.

They felt horrible, knowing that Eda would take it poorly but she wouldn't let them know that.

It didn't make walking up to her front door that day any worse, though.

Raine was not good at hiding their emotions, anyone who had aquantied Raine was well aware of that.

When they'd stood in front of Hooty that morning, he'd only looked saddened by Raine's facial expression.

It was very obvious if even the mostly tone deaf house demon could tell something was wrong.

"Eda's inside, but I'm not sure she's up for visitors right now," Hooty told them. Raine sighed, shaking their head.

"I'm her partner, Hooty, I feel like I should at least be able to come in," Raine was terrible at this, how were they supposed to keep this all bottled in until they were felt it was a good enough moment to tell Eda the words 'I'm breaking up with you'.

Hooty seemed to sense this and sighed.

"If you're worried about her, she's just a little sick. She's been like this for a few weeks now, hoot," Hooty explained.

He was definitely full of surprises today.

Though he was likely just as worried as Raine was about Eda's well being.

"Do you mind if I check on her?" Raine asked. Hooty hesitated for a moment before swinging the door open.

"Upstairs, in the bathroom," The bird worm pointed his head towards the stairs. Raine gave him a gentle smile and a pat on the head. They approached the stairs and headed up them. Once at the top they tried to listen out for Eda, half worried they'd find her dead on the ground, or worse, transformed without an elixir in sight.

First they'd find an elixir. Just in case. Keep it in their hand in case it was an emergency.

If Eda had been feeling sick it was very likely it was the curse… but how come Raine hadn't known? How come this was the first Raine caught drift of this?

She must've been very good at covering this up.

When Raine entered her room they were surprised to find a single elixir on top of her chest. They grabbed it, peering into their reflection. The grip they had on the bottle shakened slightly as it tightened.

They wished things could be different.

Raine was quick to exit the room and walked down the hall. The bathroom wasn't far, just a few doors down.

They stopped right in front of the door, anxiety filling their insides as they stared at the doorknob.

Raine's shakiness returned as they reached out, quickly pulling back in hesitation.

They couldn't just… walk in! That was an invasion of her privacy! Titan, why couldn't this just be easy!?

"E-Eda…" Raine said out loud before they could stop themself, "Are you okay?"

The only response they got was the sudden noise of which was likely Eda standing up and knocking over something on her bathroom counter. Within seconds the door cracked open and Raine saw her face.

She looked horrible. Exhausted. She had to be sick, she just had to be! It was the owl beast, wasn't it?

Eda also looked terrified as her eyes stared back at them.

"Raine! I-I'm fine! Please… n-not right now," She quickly stammered out.

Lately Raine's liking of the word "fine" had grown to be rather low. It was now one of, if not already, their least favorite word.

"You're sick, I can tell, is this part of the curse?" Raine asked Eda. Eda's eyes widened and they looked down to the elixir in Raine's hands.

"N-No! I'm fine, it's fine! Just leave, come back later, I'll be fine," Eda attempted to shut the door but Raine slid their foot in between the door frame, stopping her. She was oddly weaker than normal.

Huh.

Now that they spent the split moment to think about it, she had seemed slightly… off.

They thought it was just her growing distant, but if Eda was sick…

"Raine, please! I just want to be alone, I'm fine! I just like my bathroom! That's all!" The orange haired witch protested, "You can come back later! I'll still be here!"

Raine had to turn for a moment to hide their facial expression. They really were going to break up with her, weren't they?

Guilt grew even though they hadn't even given a sliver of an idea that that was what they were here to Eda.

Shaking the thought away they turned back to Eda. She looked so tired… so, so tired…

"Are you sure you're okay?" Raine asked her desperertely now. If she didn't give an honest response, then they'd leave her be for now.

Eda was silent, now refusing to respond. Raine was looking down, but gave a quick glance back up.

That's when they noticed her face was contorted. She looked…

Like she was about to throw up.

A second flashed by as Eda dashed away from the door, finally allowing Raine to enter just in time to slide onto the ground and hold her hair back as she threw up into the toilet.

With a better view of the bathroom they spotted a handful of empty elixir bottles on the counter.

Had she… had too many? Was that possible? Were they even doing anything to help? Were they making it worse?

They'd ask in a minute, for now all they could do was at least attempt to keep Eda's hair from getting into the toilet and mixing with the nasty remains of whatever was left in there.

It was disheartening, but at least Eda was letting them be here.

She was too weak to shove them away this time.

That stung them when that realization hit them. Nothing more than a sting though, they were used to it by now.

"You're not fine…" Raine muttered once Eda finished. She sat back up and stared the mint haired witch in the eyes.

"I-I…" She looked as if she was about to cry. What kind of internal monologue was going on inside that head of hers?

"How long?" Raine first asked, keeping a neutral but still concerned tone in their voice. Eda visibly hesitated before shifting to lean against the wall, flushing the toilet with a shaking hand.

"It's been… about two and a half weeks since it started?" Eda's voice was incredibly quiet, "It's been a lot of nausea and the vomiting isn't… as often. And well… I've been rejecting dinner dates for that reason too, I just can't stomach a lot of food right now."

"Okay, next question, is this the curse?" Eda stiffened when Raine asked. She opened her mouth to speak but decided against it, instead shaking her head.

"I've… taken a lot of elixirs, and everytime I've taken one it's done nothing," The redhead pulled her knees up to her chest, "I'm… not sure what it is, but I'll probably be fine."

"Eda… it's been multiple weeks with no improvement, I'm not even sure what it could be," Raine said, "And throwing up what food you apparently can eat, it probably isn't too good for your health."

"Here I am, sitting in my bathroom after having thrown all my guts up, and you're lecturing me on how that isn't 'too good for my health'," Eda lightly chuckled at the remark. Raine's face stayed serious. They knew they should try to get her to a healer but… Eda was horrified of going there. After all the times her mom had threatened to take drastic actions on healing her curse while dealing with the healing Coven, Eda hadn't gone to see one since.

But… maybe it was worth a shot at the very least.

"Do you think you'd be willing to see a healer?" Raine caressed their girlfriend's cheek, wiping away a bit of her hair that had gotten stuck in her mouth. Eda flinched.

"Why would you suggest that?" Eda looked away, expression hurt.

"I just… it's been this long, and neither of us know what it could be, if it has nothing to do with your curse surely it'll-"

"Please don't make me go!" Eda's hands shot up to grip Raine's wrists. Raine frowned at her response. Eda was hurt. Eda was hurt in so many ways she'd never deserved, and it hurt to see her like this.

This was the most vulnerable she'd been in… years.

It was shocking.

Raine sighed, lowering their hands from her cheeks.

"I won't make you do anything you don't want to, Eda," Raine whispered to her, leaning forward. They got a whiff of her breath and quickly regretted that aspect of the action. Eda's brows furrowed as she let go of Raine's hands. They lowered back down to the top of her knees.

"I…" Eda buried her head into her knees, "I don't want to go alone. I am worried. I'm really worried."

"I'll go with you," Raine assured her, "I'll go with you and if something makes you uncomfortable I'll be right there to be sure they don't do anything to you that you don't like." Eda's face stayed buried in the skirt of her dress as Raine took her hand, "I'll hold your hand the entire time if you need me to."

Eda's head lifted after a few moments of silence.

She rubbed the palm of Raine's hands with her fingers before finally taking their hand.

"Just… just to get s-some medicine for this," Eda muttered out, "Nothing more."

"Alright, let's clean up your hair first," Raine smiled softly to her, helping Eda stand up.

"I almost forgot about that!" The witch seemed to be just as astonished as Raine was by her own situation.

Raine could only imagine what she was feeling. Surely, like Raine, she was feeling a lot of things.

Worry and concern being the most prominent emotions.

Raine had regretted their decision in suggesting going to a healer with Eda. The entire time they'd been sat in the bleak waiting room, Eda had been shaking. Raine sat there, keeping a firm grasp on her hand. A reassurance that she was safe and that she would be okay.

Just for medicine, that's what they told themself.

But Raine worried, what if it was something more? What if this couldn't be helped with medicine?

Of course, they were just glad they'd managed to get Eda to open up to them about something for once. It was odd. Peculiar. Was this a change in the tides? Was this a breakthrough?

While they were happy, it still couldn't overshadow their worry for their girlfriend. If it was something more… What would that do? Drive them even further apart?

"Edalyn Clawthorne?" A receptionist called. Raine heard Eda's breath hitch as she froze. Raine stood up and walked towards the receptionist, Eda following closely behind. They told them the room they were to enter and the pair headed down the hall into said room.

They entered a gray-ish white room, an examination table was sitting alongthe edge of it as well as a cabinet, a few chairs, and a small desk for a healer to sit at.

Raine closed the door behind them both and sat down in a chair, Eda right beside them still. She was shaking even more now. Her anxiety must've been through the roof. They hated that she was feeling like this.

"Hey," Raine said to her, "I'm right here, remember?" They squeezed her hand to pull her back to reality. She must've been pretty zoned out because she flinched and turned to them, looking almost surprised at them being there. After a moment she calmed down and nodded, squeezing the bard's hand back.

The next few minutes were also silent until they heard footsteps just outside the door and a healer entered the room.

"Edalyn?" The person who appeaered to be the healer said. Raine wasn't sure who this was, they must've been new, considering they looked to be even younger than the two of them. They had short auburn hair and a pale complexion, though not nearly as pale as Eda's. They were short themself, and wore the typical healing coven uniform.

Eda looked up and sure enough nodded.

"Althea Chiron, it's a pleasure to meet you," They stretched their hand out for Eda to shake, Eda took a moment but eventually lifted her hand and shook theirs.

"E-Eda is fine…" It felt like Raine was seeing the young girl they'd met up with after returning from a prolonged journey to the human realm all over again. Scared, shaking, and just wanting out of it all.

She would be fine, they hoped.

"Alright, Eda, and who might this be?" Althea gestured to Raine.

"Raine Whispers, I'm her partner," They stretched out a hand that the healer graciously shook.

"I see," The brunette raised a curious eyebrow, an almost playful smirk on their face.

"So you're coming to us for some misplaced nausea and vomiting, along with a decreased appetite and fatigue," Althea said, "And you've come in as a couple…"

"What does that have to do with anything?" Eda protested.

"I have an idea, but I'll at least let you answer the basic questions first," They shrugged their shoulders, grabbing a clipboard from the desk, "First of all, your folder mentions you being cursed, this has been going on for how long?"

"Since I was fifteen, so around a decade now," Eda said. She lightly squeezed their hand. Raine of all people was aware of how much she hated talking about her curse.

"And your curse isn't what's causing this, that's what you're claiming?" Althea read.

"Mhm…" Eda mumbled, "I've taken plenty of elixirs and well… feel the exact same."

"Ah, well then," The healer looked back up, "Are you two sexually active?"

"Woah! Wait what does that have to do with this?!" Raine exclaimed.

"It's for medical reasons, I'm required to ask," They shrugged again. Raine was half shocked but quickly realized they were technically right.

"We are. But we use protective charms," Eda explained this time. Raine was the one to squeeze Eda's hand in this case, their face now reddened in embarrassment.

"Alright then," Althea clasped their hands together, "One thing is for sure, my train of thought might be correct."

"What?"

"When was your last period, Miss. Clawthorne?" They asked. Eda looked a lot more dumbfounded.

"It's… been I think two months? But, er… I'm pretty sure it's linked to my curse," The redhead explained. The grip that was holding onto Raine's calloused plams was growing sweaty as Eda visibly appeared to grow even more uncomfortable.

Was this… going where Raine thought it was going?

But that was impossible! They just explained that they used precautions like that! They weren't dumb!

"Uh huh, have your aches because of your curse gotten worse recently along with it?" Althea questioned.

"You… have aches?" Raine leaned forward and searched for Eda's emotion in her facial expression.

"Y-Yes… for both," Eda said.

"You never… Eda…" Raine in that moment remembered all the recent pain.

Titan.

"Okay, so I think it's likely my initial intuition was correct," Althea said, "Do you think it's possible you might be pregnant, Ms. Clawthorne?"

"What." Eda looked enraged by the accusation.

"All the symptoms you're showing are commonly found in witches experiencing morning sickness, and considering protection charms aren't always relliable, it's usually best to go ahead and introduce this option," They said, approaching Eda closer now, "Now I can check and be sure, because it's possible you could just have come down with a stomach illness of some unknown description."

"Well… I don't…" Eda took a deep breath, pulling her hand away from Raine's and clasping her free hand, "You can check."

"Good good," Althea said, twirling their finger in a quick circle.

It was a few moments later when they dropped their hand and smirked again.

"There's no way…" Raine muttered. Eda had once again grown stiff.

"Apparently there is, because unless I did my spell wrong, there is currently a growing embryo in your girlfriend's stomach, Mx. Whispers.," Althea explained, then turnedto Eda said the words, "You're pregnant, congratulations."

Within moments, Eda fainted.

June 3rd, 1999

Dear Diary,

I didn't do it. Let's just say, until I came home today and read the entry from yesterday I might have forgotten. It was a pretty shocking day, actually. I went to Eda's place and found her sick in her bathroom. Weirdly enough, she actually let me help her today. I realize it's because she didn't have much of a choice, but she was willing to let me be there with her. This… has to be a start?

If I hadn't gotten the other news I'm about to tell you, I'd honestly say just that would be enough to let me reconsider my decision.

I managed to convince her to go to a healer, surprisingly enough. She was anxious the entire time. I hated it. I wish I hadn't made her go to a healer. She was shaking and scared the entire time. That's one of the many things I wish I could take away for her. The trauma and fear she has around the people who are supposed to help her.

I ended up learning a new thing about the curse today, unfortunately it wasn't Eda telling me herself, she had to for the healer to get a better idea of her symptoms in general. So apparently she gets aches. A lot of them. I'll note that I should bring her a few of the cold packs I have for my migraines when I go back over tomorrow.

I should tell you what happened though. Apparently we er… didn't perform a charm right when we. Did the deed. Sometime recently.

And Eda's pregnant now.

It feels weird writing that down. Edalyn Clawthorne, sworn hater of any sort of fluffy domestic life events, is pregnant?

I'm not sure if she'll keep it, and it isn't my decision. But for now, I guess the breaking up with her part is on hold.

I just hope she's feeling okay, you know?

That's about it… I think? It seems insane, doesn't it, how a single day can change everything about your life.

Until tomorrow,

Raine

So something I've been doing with this fanfic has been the diary entries. They're relevant, and they're at the end of every chapter. Anyways, I have been posting and talking about this fic a lot on my twitter if that interests anyone! ( edaseviltwin & roses_like_red for the art)

There's two other chapters to post until it's fully caught up, but they're both already posted on Wattpad and AO3 if you'd like to go ahead and read them!
