CHAPTER 1 : DOA
I Prevail
Welcome to the revised version of Because of You. I started writing this for fun one day because I was bored and it kinda just kept going but I never finished it because it had no ending XD I was seriously making it up as I went so 3 years later I have gotten bored again and decided to revise this story and try to fix it and maybe even finish it :) reading back through it there is alot of holes in the plot and just stuff that doesn't make any sense tbh so I'm hoping to fix that without changing too much. Anyway, enjoy!
Nicks POV (Present)
I guess I was wrong.
I thought when I had joined the ZPD, things would change, people would look up to me and respect me for what and who I was, I was being fucking naïve…
Well, look where it got me. Can't say I'm not surprised, it's not the first time the legal system has failed me.
I lay staring at the very few dark cracks in the ocean of grey that surrounds me. I roll over and look at the window that is nearly useless because of the foggy looking glass behind the bars.
This is my home now. This lonely, dark, dreary prison cell that's housed me for the past year.
One of the things I hate most about this wretched place is that even though there's damn near no way to escape this place, they still make us wear shock collars just in case. If you do anything that they don't like or is slightly out of line they will shock you. I've been fortunate enough to be shocked so many times that at this point I'm almost used to it.
And another thing is this place is so damn boring, all we do is sit, sleep, or eat. I talk to other inmates once in awhile but they don't really want to talk to an ex-cop that may have even helped put them in here.
There is one thing that's breaks up the monotony though, and that's when Judy visits me about once a week. Every time she visits she tells me the same thing as a futile attempt to give me hope. She says she will get me out, prove that I wasn't in control that night. But even she admits that the evidence that it was me and only me is overwhelming, and if she didn't know me personally, she would believe their lies too.
Suddenly I hear the guard bang on the door,
"Time to eat!"
"Finally, I thought you were gonna leave me here to starve." I joked.
The prison guard didn't say anything, only signaled for me to put my hands out through the door. I walk over to the door and stick my hands out and he puts me in the same old handcuffs I am used to. He then opens the door and drags me out into the hall. As I look around, I see the other prisoners with their respective guards dragging them out into the hall as well. They line us up and we begin to walk down the hall towards the cafeteria.
"One of these days I'll get out of here," I think as we walk down the hallway, "and when I finally do, I'll find out who did this to me and left me to die in this hell hol-"
"Keep moving!"
I get shoved by one of the gaurds as I realize in my train of thought that I had almost completely stopped walking.
After a few minutes, we finally get to the cafeteria and walk in. Instantly many conversations can be heard about random things from what it was like outside of these horrid prison walls to something about how their son got a raise in his job the other day.
I walked over to the lunch line and grabbed a tray from the stack. I look at the options, peas or carrots…. And whatever that brown stuff is.
I decide to go with carrots and then I am led by my guard to a special place to eat.
I guess because of what "I did" I am under heavy security. This includes guards present at all times and having to wear a collar that is slightly more powerful than the others. I also have to be restrained with handcuffs whenever I'm not in my cell. This makes it very hard to eat and do other normal things when I do get out for the very small time I'm allowed.
When we get to my designated spot, the guard sits across from the table from me with his lunch and we begin to eat.
(Judy's POV) (present)
I jump out of my police vehicle and make my way towards the big doors of the ZPD. As I get closer and make my way up the steps, a few of my coworkers come out of the doors and one of them notices me.
"Judy! Coming to work on your day off again I see, " He says as he walks down the steps.
"You know how it is ha-ha," I reply shrugging my arms carrying a file overflowing with papers.
He laughs and keeps walking past me, "alight well have a good one, and good luck!"
"Thanks!" I say slipping through the open door as another person comes out.
I begin to make my way past the front desk and down a long hall where I eventually made it to my small office. I open the door to see all of my papers still laying where I left them. Closing the door behind me, I throw the file I had brought onto the desk and sit down behind it.
I look at the title of the file and breath a heavy sigh, In big letters right on the front it read:
-NICK WILDE MURDERS-
I look at it for a few more seconds as if hoping it would suddenly disappear and it would all be a bad dream but nothing happened.
I miss Nick being around. Although he was annoying at times, it was much better than doing patrols by myself. I can't believe it's been a year since he was taken to prison and trying to get him out of there is much harder than I would have expected.
I've looked through the files from his arrest many, many times trying to find clues to what actually happened, only to find the same things I have seen before. Not only that but I've also been visiting him to get more information once every week.
It was a surprise to everybody when we found him that night. Nobody thought that Nick could do something like that, and that seemingly a normal store robbery would escalate into what it did so quickly. That's why I don't believe what the official story is, I believe Nick.
He responded to a call from a panicked store owner in the rainforest district, the owner said that his store had been recently robbed. I wasn't there to help because I was at my parents house for the week, but now knowing what happened, I wish I would have been there. It kills me to think that I might have been able to avoid this whole thing if I would have been there.
"let's review Nick's side of this again for the thousandth time, maybe there's something I just happened to miss." I say quietly to myself knowing that I was more than likely wasting my time.
-Day of Nick's arrest-
( 1 year prier)
Nick arrived at the store shortly after the robbery happened. The front door to the small electronics store was smashed in and items were thrown everywhere. The mammal that robbed the store must have thought nobody was in there at the time, but the store owner happened to be cleaning after hours when he broke in. The owner said he didn't see exactly who it was because the power was cut just before they broke in, but they were quick and didn't waste time.
All the owner could describe of the robber to Nick was he was big, fast, and blended in with the dark very well. He tried to stop the guy but he was too big for him and the robber knocked the owner out with only a few swift hits. The robber had only stolen a specific type of part that was incredibly cheap, which was uncommon since most situations like this end up with expensive items missing.
After taking notes of everything that had happened, Nick then heard a voice from his radio.
"I need backup, Jaguar found at sunset Lane which we believe to be the suspect. Looks to be carrying several small bags. We asked if we could ask him a few questions and he ran. He's running fast and we can't take him alone, over."
"I guess that's my call to get going, thanks for the information and we'll get back to you as soon as we can!" Nick says to the store owner as he gets in his car.
He then picks up the mic in the car, "This is Wilde , I'm on my way. Over"
Nick then turns the key and steps on the gas, making the car lurch ahead quickly onto the road. It was very late at night so there wasn't really anyone on the streets to get in the way. This made it really easy for nick to get to the destination quickly.
When he starts to get close to the street the jaguar was spotted on, he sees two another police cruisers parked in front of an old warehouse.
The place looked like it had been abandoned for years, with moss and vines growing on the sides of the walls. The night and the rain made it very hard to see any further than the few feet of light that the street lamp gave off beside the building. The officers were outside of their cars and had their guns aimed at the entrance of the warehouse.
Nick quickly parked the car by the others and stepped out into the cold, rainy night.
"Come out with your hands up, and you will not be harmed!" One of the officers yelled into the car's microphone.
They waited and waited, a few minutes went by and nothing had happened. There were only 4 other officers there at the moment, the rest were still on their way. Because of this, they hadn't gone inside after the jaguar yet.
"He's going to get away if we don't get in there and look for him!" Nick yelled at one of the officers over the sirens of the cars.
"We believe the suspect is armed, nobody's going in until we have more backup!" The other Officer yells back.
"How are we supposed to wait when he could be getting away? We need to get in there and stop him!"
"Nicks right, we need to get in there! We can't wait any longer than we already have! There are enough of us here that we could all go at the same time!" Yelled another.
"Nobody's going near that place without more backup, it's too dangerous!" The other Officer yelled back.
They waited a few more minutes for backup but it still taking its precious time to show up.
"We are waiting for backup on a jaguar that stole some electronics… you have to kidding me, " Nick thinks while sitting there, "it's not like this is a trained assassin."
Nick was tired of it and decided he had waited long enough…
"I'm going in!" He yelled as he started to run into the building.
"Wilde, No!"
With this, Nick took off into the building before any of the other officers could stop him. The door wasn't hard to open since the jaguar had already smashed through it and Nick just quickly pushed it aside.
It was dark inside and at first there was nothing, just the sound of the police sirens outside of the warehouse and the pounding rain. He pulled out his flashlight and looked around, searching for a light switch. He looked down the sides of the warehouse for one, but there were none to be seen. When he didn't find a switch he continued slowing walking into the dark with his flashlight, with none of the other officers either brave or stupid enough to follow him.
There were boxes and crates everywhere, some were even broke open. Most of the boxes looked to be newer and were labeled:
||WARNING: Fragile items inside, open with care||
He began to get a weird feeling in his stomach as he walked further into the old warehouse. The sounds of the rain combined with the atmosphere of the building was getting to Nick more that he would like to admit, so he decided to try to call the jaguar out to break the silence.
"look, if you just give in, you won't be harmed!" Nick yelled into the darkness.
Nick made his way further in as the rain pounded down onto the roof of the building masking the sirens of the cruisers outside.
Suddenly as Nick came around a big stack of crates, two figures grabbed his arms and then something was quickly wrapped around his neck. A sharp sting was felt in the back of his neck and instantly lost control of his body, as if he had been paralyzed.
Suddenly Nick saw a jaguar come around from behind him. He looks down and smiles at Nick, making Nick feel even more uncomfortable.
"That device that you now have on your neck, let's me control your body in every way, I could have you do anything I please and you wouldn't be able to stop me." The jaguar says still smiling, "So what should I have you do first?"
He continues staring at Nick for a few moments and then looks up at the door they had entered the building in, " I think I know, let's walk outside."
Nick then began to follow him as he made his way towards the door, not being able to stop himself. He wasn't even able to talk, he could only look hopelessly and watch.
They walk through the big door and the first thing Nick notices is the 4 officers that had come with Nick on their knees in a line with their hands tied behind their backs. He then sees the people behind them, each one using some sort of weapon holding them hostage.
"Looks like your 'help' is really doing a lot…. Well we won't be needing them anymore and we sure as hell can't leave them to tell the others. Here, take this," handing a pistol to Nick who takes it unwillingly," now I want you to shoot them."
Nick freaks out inside his mind as his body begins to obey. His body makes its way over to one of the officers on the ground. He slowly raises the gun to his fellow officers head. Nick tries everything to stop his body but is unable to do anything, only watch in horror at what he was about to do. Nick felt his finger pull slowly on the trigger, getting closer and closer to ending his friends life.
*BANG*
Nick watching in shock as his friend and co-worker fell to the ground with a hole in his head. Then without warning his body forces him onto the next officer.
*BANG*
Nick wanted to stop himself more than anything but his body wouldn't give in.
*BANG*
There was only one officer left, officer Wolford.
Wolford looked up at Nick with tears on his eyes. Nick could see the fear deep inside of him.
"Nick what the fuck is wrong with you!? Your a disgrace to ZPD! ."
"Well that's the thing, " the jaguar interrupts, stopping Nick momentarily.
"You see the collar around his neck? It gives me complete control over his body. And although I have control over him, Nick is still conscious of what he is doing in fact judging by the tears rolling down his face he probably wants to turn the gun on me, but he can't do anything about it. I control him and he can't stop himself no matter what he does." He looks from Wolford back to me, "Now if you would kindly finish please Nick?"
Nick was disgusted.
How could someone do this to somebody else! How could someone be so cold?!
Nick looked down to see Wolford looking at the jaguar in tears.
" You're a twisted monster! I hope you rot in he-"
*BANG*
Nick watches his dead friend fall to the ground, with tears in his eyes.
Just then a small low voice was heard from somewhere behind him.
"I guess that's one way to test it, I'd consider this a success wouldn't you?"
"Yes," said the jaguar," he did everything I wanted with no hesitation."
"Good, now get the collar off of him before the rest of them show up."
Nick then sees the jaguar walk over to him and reach up to the collar to take it off. He pushes a button and the collar comes off with another sharp sting in his neck.
Nick falls to the ground as he begins to pass out. Falling to the ground, he looks behind him as his vision begins to becoming increasingly blurry. He tries to see where the unknown voice had come from before its too late.
With his sight almost completely gone he barely sees who the voice had come from.
Is that a sheep?
"Good luck explaining this one Officer Wilde. Alright everyone let's move. Remember, leave no trace. Burn the cars and the building, leave nothing," said the jaguar leaving.
Nick hears several lighters being lit and flames beginning to grow.
The sound of police sirens coming from far away is the last thing Nick hears as his vision finally goes black.
For anyone new to this story, the chapter titles are actually song names that semi go with the theme of the chapter and I include the band name under it. Anyway hopefully this was a little better to read, made a little more sense maybe XD anyway, see you in the next chapter!
