Chapter 1
Today, I was so excited! I get to learn what quirk I get and be a hero! My sister and I were in the back of mom's car, bouncing in our seats, excited and wanting to get to the doctor. "Mom, how much longer!" Izumi cried from next to me.
"Just a few more minutes, dear. We're almost there." Mom smiled at us from the rearview mirror.
——
We were sitting inside the doctor's office, waiting for the doctor to come in and tell us the results. When the door opened, the doctor came in and told us the results.
"I'm sorry Mrs Yagi. Your son, Izuku, is quirkless." Those words caused me to freeze. I was quirkless. One of the few that didn't have power.
'Can I still be a hero? Can I still be like All Might? Can I bring smiles and hope to people with me just being there even without a quirk?' My thoughts were cut short as I watched Izumi and mom walk out of the room and Izumi looked at me and motioned at me to follow.
I rushed after them and we drove home.
——
That night, I was in bed, crying to myself. Mom and dad both forgot about me. They didn't even bat an eyelash when they saw me sad about being quirkless.
Izumi came in and saw me. "Izuku, what's wrong?"
"M-mom and dad don't love me anymore. I-can't be a hero now."
She came over and hugged me. "Hey, it's okay. I'm sure you can still be a hero. And I'm sure it's all a big misunderstanding. I know mom and dad still love you. Here, why don't we go ask them if you can be a hero?"
I wiped my tears away and nodded. Izumi took me downstairs and had me wait behind a wall connected to the living room where mom and dad are watching TV.
She walked up and both looked at her. "Mom, dad?"
"Yes? What is it, Izumi?" Dad asked.
"Can someone still be a hero if they're quirkless?" I held my breath and clenched my muscles, waiting for their answer.
They both looked at each other before they turned back to Izumi. "No," they both said in unison.
The moment I heard that, I began to cry again and rushed back up to my room. I cried to myself the rest of the night with Izumi there to comfort me.
——
The next four years of my life were hell. Izumi was the only friend I had. She was always there for me when I needed her. The Bakugou twins and Todoroki twins, however, were a different story.
They would bully, berate, and beat me with every chance they had. That called me things like useless, a waste of space and, Katsuki's favorite, Deku.
Today though, I had enough. I had packed a bag with enough supplies to last a while and was standing outside at night with Izumi as she saw me off.
"Izuku, are you sure this is what you want to do?" She looked at me concerned.
I looked at the house as flashes of all the things that have happened here began to go through my head. "Yeah. I'm sure. I just can't stay here. I'm sorry Zumi. I have your number in case of emergencies or I get a phone. I love you Zumi. I couldn't have asked for a better sister."
I hugged her as a few tears escaped our eyes. As we let go, we heard the voice of Inko call out. "Izumi, come inside, you'll catch a cold."
"Okay mom! *sigh I'll miss you Izuku. And remember, even if everyone tells you you can't, remember that you can be a hero."
I nodded and left. I walked into a forest nearby and set up camp. Izumi helped me buy most of this stuff from her allowance. Most people would think that I resent her for always being the center of attention but I don't. She was always there for me when I needed her. Always made sure to help patch me up.
"I'll always be grateful to you, sis. No matter what happens, make sure you become the hero you want to be." I looked up at the stars the rest of the night, until it was time for bed.
——
The next morning, I woke up to the feeling of something… calling me. I followed it to its source through the forest. As I got deeper, the feeling got stronger and stronger. It almost felt like it was pulling me but not forcing me.
I eventually came across a cave about an hour from my camp. I wandered in, the feeling growing stronger and stronger the further I went. Eventually I reached an open area in the cave. As I walked in, I saw it, a sword, hidden in the cave. Then, everything went black.
??? POV
I felt that the sword's resting place had been disturbed so I decided to go and look. On my way, I saw that someone had made camp here. 'Curious. Is this who disturbed the sword?'
I decided not to think on that right now and went to the cave. When I got there, I saw a boy no older than twelve unconscious on the ground with the sword sheathed on his back. As I went to grab the sword to put it back, the blade vanished.
'It seems that I'm too late. The blade has bonded with this boy. Hmm, but he does not seem to hold the curse.' I picked the boy up and carried him back to my cottage.
——
Izuku POV
I woke up in a cold sweat, breathing hard as I sat up in bed. I held my chest as my heart beat hard. I looked around at my surroundings and realized I was in an unfamiliar place. I got out of bed and looked out the window to see the forest edge.
The door to the room opened and I turned to see a tall man with black hair brought back in a ponytail. "Ah, you are awake. That is good."
"Where am I, sir? What happened?"
"Please, call me Buredo. I found you unconscious in a cave and brought you back to my home. Do you remember what happened?"
"I… woke up and felt something calling to me. I followed it to a cave and when I found it, nothing. Everything went black and the next thing I know, I'm here."
He nodded as he seemed to be thinking about something. "What is that that you wish to do with your life?"
"Well, Mr Buredo, sir. I want to be a hero. I want to save people from villains. I want to help people stay safe. But… I'm quirkless."
He looked at me as if judging what I told him. After a minute, he nodded and smiled. "That sword bonded to you. It became part of you. Under normal circumstances, you would be cursed with an everlasting bloodlust until you found someone to finally kill you. But you didn't. I believe your kind heart and pure soul has cleansed the blade of its curse. However, in doing this, when you die, so does the sword."
"So I'm the last wielder of this sword? Where is it?"
"It is hidden within you. The blade itself is nothing but a mere illusion. But it's power is very much real. All you have to do is call to that power and it will come to you."
I nodded and closed my eyes. I thought about his words and searched myself for this power. I felt something and grabbed hold. When I opened my eyes, I had an arm behind me holding something. I looked and saw a sword on my back. I unsheathed it and held it in front of me.
It looked beautiful. I admired the blade for a few minutes before I realized what I was doing and looked back at Buredo. "Do not worry. It is fine. I can understand the admiration one can have for a blade. This is the form the previous wielder had it take before the curse took over."
"Wait, had it take? You mean it can change its form?"
"Of course. Like I said, the sword itself is but an illusion. It takes the shape of whatever you desire."
"Well, I always liked the look of zweihanders." When I said that, the sword began to glow and became much heavier. I uncovered my eyes and saw it's new appearance.
It looked beautiful as well. "I see. So you are more a fan of European style swords. If you would like, I could teach you the ways of the sword."
"Wait, really? You would do that?"
"Yes child. Come with me." I followed him through his house until we reached a room. He opened the door and I saw racks of weapons and even a forge. "Here is where we shal start. Every swordsman makes his own sword. It is tradition. And I shall teach you the basics. You will not craft your blades until you are older but knowing how they are made helps in learning to wield them. So, shall we begin?"
