Fighting for the enemy

A Gundam Seed fanfic by Jeremy Mountbatten

Disclaimer: I don't own Gundam Seed at all and all the rights belong to Bandai and Sunrise. This is a reworked fanfic based on the former gundam seed fanfiction, Innocence of the battlefield and I created it as an improvement to my former gundam seed fanfic. In this reworked fanfic, there are some changes with the storyline so don't be surprised why this reworked fanfic feels different from the former one. Still, I've planned this reworked fanfic where Flay will be with Yzak together once this fanfic ends where they will become a married couple. Feel free to read and follow this reworked gundam seed fanfic if you want to see how this story goes and how it ends.

Note: For readers who have no idea of what gundam seed is, I highly recommend that they read the lore of gundam seed anime so that they will understand this reworked fanfic better.

Phase 1: Dawn of war

Several years ago…

When Flay was younger, she used to have a happy childhood while living with her family in a huge mansion at Washington D.C, Atlantic Federation during CE 60. However, things came crashing down for Flay when her mother Maria Allster passed away from an unknown disease.

The death of Maria Allster impacted both Flay and her father George Allster. They couldn't believe that Maria would pass away quickly despite having no chronic illness plaguing her health. Flay's father blames the Coordinators for the death of Maria and starts to influence the young Flay, telling her Coordinators are inhuman beings and out to destroy them. To ensure she fully accepted Blue Cosmos's Anti-Coordinator ideology, Flay was enrolled at Anti-Coordinators programs by her father (offered by community centers run by Blue Cosmos) to be indoctrinated with hate, racism and prejudice against Coordinators.

Despite being taught by the staff members of Blue Cosmos, Flay didn't become diehard Blue Cosmos supporters like the other young children in the program.

Flay develops a frightening anxiety when she hears about Coordinators serving in the ZAFT forces. Sensing an opportunity to exploit Flay's fear for political and military purposes, the board of directors of Blue Cosmos orders George to send Flay for both military and mobile pilot training at the age of 10, so that she can become a future EA soldier fighting the ZAFT forces when the time comes.

Flay's father enthusiastically accepted the order and made the necessary preparations for Flay to commence both her military and mobile pilot training when she reached the age of 10. By CE 66 and at the age of 10, Flay was being sent by her father to Blue Cosmos's facilities to commence both her military and mobile pilot training guided by EA officers with Blue Cosmos sympathies.

Over the next 4 years, Flay adapts her life while undergoing training to become a future EA soldier. Unlike many young kids that have a proper childhood, Flay does not have one. Apart from both her military and mobile pilot training, she has to undergo schooling during the holidays as well. As a result, Flay understood that it was necessary for her not to have holidays to relax, after all her future life is going to be a EA soldier fighting evil Coordinators serving in the ZAFT forces.

By the time she reached the age of 15 and before enlisting in the EA forces as a pilot upon finishing her course—Flay was being sent to Heliopolis Technical College to study Aeronautical Engineering. Despite encountering Kira Yamato as a Coordinator during one of the classes, she was fearful of Kira. Flay assumed Kira could be from the PLANTs. Luckily, Kira and his group of friends were able to convince Flay that Kira comes from the Orb Union and he's not a ZAFT soldier.

Eventually, Flay was able to trust Coordinators again and become less fearful of them until ZAFT forces led by the Le Creuset team began attacking the peaceful Orb Union's colony of Heliopolis to steal the 5 Gundams of the 'G project'.

North-South Expressway (HE-1), Colony of Heliopolis, Orb Union, 25 January CE 71, 1400 hrs

Flay and her friend, Jane Sutherland are riding on the North-South Expressway as they head down to the shopping district of Heliopolis before returning for the evening classes.

"Flay, once you finish your Aeronautical Engineering course, will you continue your studies at university level?" Jane asks.

"No, Jane. My father wants me to enlist in the EA force as a pilot once I finish my college studies. He wants me to become an EA pilot to fight against Coordinators from the ZAFT forces." Flay replies.

"Good for you, Flay. I always wanted to join the EA forces as a pilot so that I can kill these space monsters living in those ugly hourglasses. Can't wait to destroy annoying hourglass in the name of a blue and pure world." Jane hopes she can become a pilot for the EA forces and destroy the PLANTs for good.

Though Flay wasn't being a hardcore Blue Cosmos supporter as her friend does, she hopes the war can end in favor of the EA forces so that she can live through to start a family.

"Jane, not all Coordinators are space monsters. Some Coordinators living in neutral nations are not part of ZAFT forces. Furthermore, I have met Kira Yamato who is a Coordinator but he dislikes war," Flay tries to reason with her friend.

"Don't need to spare a sympathy thought for Coordinators like Kira Yamato. Do you know there are rumors that Coordinators living in neutral nations are found to be spies for the ZAFT military?" Jane questions Flay.

"I did not know that." Flay's eyes widen in disbelief.

"Then, you better be careful of Coordinators like Kira Yamato. He may one day side with ZAFT if the war continues." Jane pauses for a sec. "This is why we cannot co-exist with Coordinators peacefully, Flay. They would do anything to help their own race the moment when the ZAFT military invades our nation. It is better we treat them as fifth columnists." .

"Don't be so exaggerating, Jane. I know Kira Yamato is a good person and he is a pacifist. He's not a fifth columnist." Flay defends Kira.

"You can say it now because the war did not affect him yet. But once the war affects him, we shall see whether he would renounce his pacifism and join the ZAFT military. So, don't be so close to him." Jane warns.

Jane's words alarms Flay. She knows Kira is a good-hearted Coordinator and won't switch sides easily due to the ongoing Bloody Valentine war. Still, her friend has a point about Coordinators working for ZAFT while living as citizens of neutral nations, and Flay worries she might have to fight against Kira should he become a ZAFT soldier in the future.

Soon, a traffic jam comes into view and Jane slows down the vehicle before it comes to a stop.

"Great, there is a traffic jam ahead. I think we might want to postpone…" Before Jane could finish her sentence, two mobile suits could be heard flying overhead above the expressway. "What the?" Jane looks up to see what is going on. "Are those mobile suits?" Jane becomes concerned as she sees the two mobile suits that resemble ZAFT's GINN units. The two GINNs began firing on the Orb Union's military trucks ahead and multiple explosions were seen and heard in the distance.

"Ahhh!" Flay lets out a scream as the nearby explosions rock the car she is in.

"Shit! Those mobile suits belonged to ZAFT forces. We gotta leave this vehicle and get out of here, Flay!" Jane urges Flay to leave the vehicle as she unbuckles the car's seat belt.

Quickly, Flay unbuckles the seat belt and opens the door. As she stepped out of the car, she was shocked to see the two GINNs firing rapidly on the military trucks, and civilians exiting from their vehicles before running away from the war zone.

"Flay, snap out of it! We have to leave this unsafe area and head to the nearest emergency shelter," Jane scolds Flay.

Flay regains focus and is pulled by Jane as they follow the civilians running down the grid-locked expressway to seek they are about to head into an emergency exit that will bring them to one of the colony's emergency shelters, sounds of gunfire pierce through the vicinity which led to Flay turning around to see what is going on. To her horror, a group of ZAFT soldiers appear out of nowhere and begin firing on several Orb Union soldiers guarding the rest of the Orb Union's military trucks that are not destroyed.

Within seconds, the Orb Union soldiers are gunned down by ZAFT soldiers and begin searching the expressway for any potential threats to them. Realizing that the ZAFT soldiers would try to find them and kill her and her friend, Flay stops. "Jane, I won't be coming with you to the emergency shelter. There are ZAFT soldiers heading towards here. I will get their attention and draw them away." Flay says.

"Flay, please don't. If they find out that you were part of Blue Cosmos in the past, they will not hesitate to kill you." .

"I know, Jane, and don't worry, I will find another emergency exit to go to another emergency shelter safely. Be safe and see you again when this is over." Flay pushes her friend into the elevator of the emergency exit. "Now go." Flay presses the button of the elevator to head down to the entrance of the emergency shelter.

After seeing that her friend is heading down to the entrance of the emergency shelter safely, Flay leaves the emergency exit area and begins looking at the surroundings, to plan how to lure the ZAFT soldiers away from the area and look for another way to escape.

'There is another emergency exit up ahead but it is located up ahead where there are several ZAFT soldiers patrolling the area. I need to find something to distract them away before I can dash straight into the emergency exit undetected.' Flay thought as she surveyed the surroundings around her. Luckily, there is a dead Orb Union soldier lying nearby and she quickly searches the dead soldier for anything useful. She finds a road flare and Flay immediately lit up the road flare before throwing it further away down the expressway as a distraction.

"Over there, a light flare is being deployed. You two go check it out immediately." A male ZAFT soldier—wearing the elite red pilot suit—orders two Green ZAFT soldiers. The two Green ZAFT soldiers acknowledge his orders and head towards the road flare to investigate.

While the two Green ZAFT soldiers are heading towards the location of the road flare, Flay is breathing in and out slowly to calm herself down. Since she was aware that ZAFT Coordinator soldiers were searching for any survivors on the expressway, she feared they might harm her if she was found. Flay can only hope she can reach for the emergency exit located further ahead without getting caught. Flay resolved to keep her fear in check while navigating to the emergency exit stealthily.

After checking the nearby surroundings for ZAFT soldiers searching the area, Flay silently navigates through the maze of abandoned vehicles on the expressway, using some of the abandoned vehicles to hide around the corner. Fortunately for Flay, she was able to make it to the elevator door of the emergency exit undetected after carefully moving through the maze of abandoned vehicles.

'Finally. I've reached the elevator of the emergency exit. All I need is to press the button and enter the elevator before heading down to the emergency shelter.' A smile appears on Flay's face as she is panting with relief. Just as she is about to press the elevator's button, a barrel of an assault rifle is placed on Flay's back.

"Don't move. If you enter the elevator at this moment, I will not hesitate to shoot you," The ZAFT soldier—wearing the elite red pilot suit—threatens Flay as he points the assault rifle at her back. "Turn around with both of your hands raised up." The ZAFT soldier orders. "What is your name, and please pass me your personal identification card for verification." The ZAFT soldier instructs Flay.

Flay ignores his instructions as her heart pounds in fear due to the fact that she got caught by a Coordinator serving in the ZAFT military. She remembered the horrors of seeing how Coordinators serving in the ZAFT military were willing to commit crimes against humanity against Naturals by massacring them in any way possible when they captured them as POWs (Prisoners of War) during battles. Fearing that she might be killed by the ZAFT soldier, Flay planned to give her identification card to the ZAFT soldier before running away while he was checking her card.

"Erm miss, please give me your personal identification card, and please state your name. I don't have a whole day waiting for you." The ZAFT soldier issues a stern order to Flay.

Reluctantly, Flay takes out her personal identification card from her bag and passes it to the ZAFT soldier. While he was checking her card, Flay takes a quick look at the silver haired ZAFT soldier and feels threatened after seeing his face. Seeing this is a chance for her to escape while he is checking her card, Flay immediately bolts out to escape from the ZAFT soldier safely.

"Is your name—" The ZAFT soldier is about to question Flay when he looks up to see that she is gone from his view. He quickly looks around to see where she had gone. By chance, he spotted Flay running in another direction. "Hey, Stop!" The ZAFT soldier shouts at her.

The soldier quickly puts Flay's personal identification card into one of the pockets of the red pilot suit as he gives chase to capture her alive. "Stop running," The ZAFT soldier shouted at Flay as he was chasing right behind her. Unfortunately, the ZAFT soldier was able to catch up to Flay and pin her down to the ground to restrain her.

"Noooo! Noooo! Let me go!" Flay shouted as she heavily resists from getting restrained by the ZAFT soldier.

"Rusty, I got a live civilian in here and need some help to restrain her." The ZAFT soldier speaks through his red helmet's communication device. Soon, another ZAFT soldier wearing the elite red pilot suit comes into view and helps the ZAFT soldier to restrain Flay.

"Get off me! You space monsters!" Flay screams at the two ZAFT soldiers while they tie both of her hands with zip tie handcuffs.

At the words 'space monster', the silver-haired ZAFT soldier grunts, clearly being pissed off. He takes his rifle and hits Flay unconscious. "Stay down, you Blue Cosmos sympathizing Natural scumbag." The ZAFT soldier shouts at her.

'This is it. I'm a goner. They will abuse me for their own pleasure. Dad, I'm sorry if I got killed by Coordinators serving in the ZAFT military.' This was Flay's last thought as her eyes started to close with tears flowing down her eyes.
