It was just past ten on the night of Friday, September 6th, 1991 and Augusta Longbottom had just laid down in bed.

But, before she could fall asleep, a Hogwarts barn owl entered through her bedroom window, dropped off a letter on her stomach, and taken off again.

Still lying in bed, Augusta picked up the letter in her hands and read:

Dear Madam Longbottom:

Your ward and grandson Neville Longbottom has struggled with his lessons in his first week at Hogwarts and I know why. I feel it best if we discuss this face to face. I have turned this letter into a portkey that will take you to my office in a few minutes and a few nanoseconds.

- Gryffindor head of house-

Minerva McGonagall.

And a few minutes later. Augusta Longbottom found herself face to face with Professor McGonagall in McGonagall's office.

"Good evening, Madam Longbottom, " said Professor McGonagall kindly, "Let's get down to business."

"So?" asked Madam Longbottom, "What do you think is responsible for Neville's struggles?"

"His wand, " said Professor McGonagall in a crisp clear voice, "Neville is apparently using his father's wand?"

"Yes," confirmed Madam Longbottom, "I want Neville to use Frank's wand as a way of paying tribute to Frank."

"Madam Longbottom, " said Professor McGonagall firmly, "I can understand the sentiment, but you did Neville a great disservice by not buying him his own wand. Remember what Ollivander always says: The wand chooses the wizard and you will never get such great results from another wizard's wand."

"Are you saying Neville will be more successful if he gets his own wand?" asked Augusta.

"Yes, " said Professor McGonagall matter of factly, "I can't promise that he'll be a straight O student or be one of the best in the year but he'll be in a much better position to be a successful wizard if he gets his own wand."

Madam Longbottom looked disappointed but also understanding.

"I'm a bit heartbroken that Neville can't use Frank's wand, " admitted Madam Longbottom, "But after what you have told me, which has reminded me of what Ollivander himself told me, though I have long since forgotten, I accept that Neville will need to get his own wand."

"I've arranged with Ollivander to take Neville to his shop tomorrow morning. You may come with."

"I will, " promised Madam Longbottom, "If it comes to this, I'd like to be there for the moment Neville gets his wand."

"You should be, " said Professor McGonagall, "This will be the moment Neville truly becomes his own wizard."

A/N: This is the first in a series of mostly unrelated one shots about things that didn't happen in Canton but that I think should have. I always thought Professor McGonagall should spoken to Madam Longbottom about the wand choosing the wizarding and the importance of Neville having his own wand. We know that McGonagall was useless as a head of house but then there are certain things that clearly should have happened. Madam Longbottom being made aware of why Neville should've had his own wand is a biggie. It seemed clear to me that canon Neville not having a wand that had chosen him was a big factor in his struggles with magic.
