Introduction
by Professor Ozpin
Throughout the long history of the world of Remnant, there have been no shortage of stories. Fairy tales, folk stories, escapist fiction and lost legends carry with them the histories and cultures across the world, offering a glimpse into the minds of the peoples who wrote and told them. In this endless catalogue of stories and tales, there have been no small amount dealing with the darker side of Remnant. Tales of horror, suspense, and the frightening unknown have been told since the world bred life.
But why are these stories told? Every culture and voice has its diverse set of reasons and explanations. They may carry warnings of the frightening fates that await the careless or foolish. They may transcribe the negative side of history that need never to be forgotten. They may be told simply to entertain, to fill oneself with the rush of dread and excitement that comes from a well-crafted fright. Some may be told to try and better understand the world, including all of its dangers and downfalls. No matter the intent, these ghostly stories are staples of Remnant's ever-expanding record. Folk tales, urban legends, gossip and rumors, and even the yarns spun by students in their dormitories late at night all serve to illustrate the vast chronicle of our world and everything upon it.
The collection you are about to read contains in it stories from all of these diverse sources. They include legends told since before the invention of writing to tales whispered by students around campfires. Through these stories, I hope that the fear they convey can be better understood, so that one may better control the fear within. Lessons can be taught, mindsets can be merged, and light can be shone on the dark side of this world. In addition, even I can admit that sometimes a scary story is just fun.
