Prologue
In a Japanese living room, a lone figure sat on the floor in front of a chabudai table. The shoji doors within the room were open wide to let in fresh air and sunlight. Lying on top of the table's surface was a leather brown journal with the image of a full moon imprinted on the book's surface. There was also a wolf howling up to it as it sat underneath a cherry blossom tree. The figure smiled down at the journal before opening it to the first page. They then picked up a pen that sat beside the journal and began to write upon the blank page.
Person's profile: Journal entry
When I was little...I've never really had a family to call my own. All I remember was living in the orphanage with the other kids, who had either lost their parents in an accident. Or were abandoned by their parents who didn't want them or were unable to take care of them. Yet despite living in an orphanage, the people who worked there were kind and friendly to all of the children, who had gone through tough times. They always made sure that we had enough food and clothing to last us throughout each year. I really loved the orphanage, along with the children and people who lived there. They were like family to me, and I always try to help out as much as I can around the place. While also helping the children find families who would love and take care of them. Yet even though I was happy at the orphanage. I still had this longing deep inside my heart whenever I see a child being adopted by a new family. I kept wishing each and every day that a family would notice me and adopt me like the other children. But as the years passed, I began to lose hope of ever being adopted. For no family seemed interested in me. I soon gave up, and just focused on helping the children find good homes. Then one day when I had turned sixteen, I went out to do some errands for the orphanage. That was when I ran into two girls who were heading home from school. I was a little shy around them at first before one of them asked me if I would like to hang out with them. I later learned that their names were Michiru and Nazuna, and that they had been childhood friends for a long time. I found out that they had different dreams of what they wanted to do in their futures, along with their likes and dislikes. They also shared their special song with me called 'Night Running', which I also came to love as well. I later told them about my life at the orphanage, and how I had been living there for as long as I could remember. Michiru showed sympathy when I told her and Nazuna about how I didn't have any memories of my parents. And that nobody seemed interested in adopting me. Nazuna also gave me a sympathetic look, yet hers wasn't as emotional or meaningful as Michiru's. I didn't let her expression bother me though. But I was grateful that Michiru had shown her concern for me. I could tell that Michiru was a passionate girl that wanted to help people. Yet I could also tell that she can be a bit reckless at times too.
They helped me with the errands that I had to run for the orphanage and accompanied me back after I was done. I introduced them to all of the kids, and the caretakers of the orphanage before they had to go home. I thought that it would be the last time I ever saw them. But I was proven wrong when Michiru came to visit me at the orphanage. She asked me if I wanted to hang out with her and Nazuna after school, or on the weekends whenever I had free time. I was a little surprised by Michiru's offer. But I soon accepted and started to hang out with her and Nazuna. In the days that followed, I soon became close friends with Michiru and Nazuna. We became inseparable as all three of us did everything together, and I've come to cherish all of the moments we've shared with each other. But that was when everything changed for us. One day, we got into an accident and were nearly ran over by a truck. Michiru had been ahead of me and Nazuna, who had been listening to some music on her cordless earbuds. Michiru quickly noticed the truck driving towards us and turned to shout out a warning. I also noticed the truck and tried to push Nazuna out of the way. Michiru came running back to help. But we were a second too late and the truck crashed into all three of us. All I remember after that was this burning pain coursing through my body.
I later woke up in the hospital with Michiru and Nazuna. Somehow, we had survived the hit and run incident. Though some of the injuries that we obtained in the accident would take a while to heal. Michiru had a broken leg, while Nazuna's right wrist had to be put into a cast. As for me, I had two ribs that were slightly cracked. But luckily, they weren't broken. The doctors had all three of us stay in the hospital for a week to make sure that we healed properly. After a week had passed, we were let out, and we went about our normal lives as usual. That was when things suddenly changed for us again. The three of us had met up at the park, where Nazuna told me and Michiru that she had passed the audition to be an idol. Michiru and I were excited for Nazuna as we congratulated her, while encouraging her that she will do great. That was when Nazuna's body started shaking, and what happened next cause me and Michiru to freeze up in shock. Nazuna had suddenly changed into a beastman right before our eyes. We were so stunned by her sudden change that Michiru and I could only watch as Nazuna ran back home in fear. I couldn't believe what I had just witnessed. One of my friends had just turned into a beastman. Many questions raced through my head as I tried to understand what had happened to Nazuna. But through those thoughts, I could help feeling like something bad was going to happen to all three of us.
A day later, the same thing happened to me. I had just woken up when I suddenly felt a shiver go through my body. It felt like I had been doused in cold water. It quickly passed after a minute, but what happened next really shocked me. Fur suddenly started growing on my arms. Fear gripped at my heart as I stared down at my new claw tipped paw/hands. I knew I couldn't let the children and adults see me like this. It will only cause them to panic, and I didn't want to scare them. I quickly snuck out of the orphanage and ran to Michiru's house in hopes that she could help me. That was when things got worse for me. I barely got about one block away from the orphanage, when a group of men wearing black suits appeared from out of nowhere and grabbed me. I struggled in an attempt to escape them. But they quickly overwhelmed me and jabbed a needle into my neck to put me to sleep.
I woke up later and found myself trapped within a glass windowed cell. I began to panic as I thrashed around within my prison. I tried to break the glass by ramming into it. But it was no use. The glass was too thick and I only winded up hurting myself. I then realized that I wasn't alone for in the prison cell across from me was Nazuna. I was surprised to see her and wondered how long she had gotten trapped here within this strange place. I was able to ask her that question when the scientists that had captured us put me and Nazuna together in a room, where they could test us. She quietly told me that she had been kidnapped by the men in the same black suits. And had been brought here to the lab about a day ago. I knew that the two of us had to escape from this place and get back to our hometown. Every day I tried to figure out a way for me and Nazuna to escape from the lab. But when I do come up with a perfect plan, I would always discover a flaw in it. Yet I wouldn't give up and kept trying to figure out a way to make our escape possible. Throughout our days within the lab, the scientists would put me and Nazuna through different tests. I discovered that Nazuna was able to shapeshift her body parts into different animal limbs. The tests that the scientists put me through were brutal. But in those tests, I discovered that I had become faster and stronger than any normal human. I also found out that my claws could cut through thick sheets of steel, and that my fangs were as sharp as knives. Another thing that I learned was that I had a mean punch. It was when the scientists had forced me to break through a sixteen feet layer of thick ice. When I did the ice shattered and broke into tiny fragments. After discovering this, I began to have confidence that my new powers could help me and Nazuna escape. But the scientists were one step ahead of me. They became fearful of my powers and forced me to wear a shock collar. The collar had a powerful electrical current that could bring me to my knees. So, if I tried to break out of my cell, the collar would deliver a powerful shock that would render me unconscious. Yet despite all the pain that I went through, I was determined to get both me and Nazuna out of the lab.
A few months went by before a strange man wearing a mask suddenly came to the lab and freed Nazuna from her prison. I thought that they would also help me to get out of my prison. But then the man had whispered something to Nazuna that I couldn't quite catch. I thought that Nazuna would argue with whatever the man had whispered to her and tell him to free me from my cell. But what happened next really shocked me to the very core of my soul. Instead of arguing with the man, Nazuna only nodded her head and began to follow him, while not even glancing back at me as they walked past my cell. Shock and anger flowed through me as I watched Nazuna walk away with a masked man. I shouted out for her to come back and help me, but not once did she turn around to look at me. I felt a deep coldness stir within me as the feeling of betrayal began to settle inside my heart. The friend that I had once thought I could trust had just abandoned me to save her own skin.
Days passed as I continued to live in the lab, where the scientists put me through straining tests to find out what my limits were. In those days I grew violent and unpredictable. I would lash out at the scientists when they tried to take me out of my cage. I also began to change from being the shy and passive person that I had once been, to a beast that was untrusting and cold towards those who kept me locked up. I didn't care about what they did to me in those tests anymore. All I wanted to do was lash out and inflict damage upon the scientists who experimented on me. The shock collar that they had placed on my neck barely did anything to me anymore. I could no longer feel the physical pain of the electrical shocks coming from it. I could no longer feel any pain when being tortured by the scientists who kept me imprisoned within their facility. The only pain that I could feel was the deep betrayal of Nazuna leaving me behind to face this hell by myself. But the hope of ever escaping from the lab still burned deep inside of me. A week later I soon figured out a plan to escape from the lab. But I had to wait for the perfect moment to do it. That moment came when they put me through one of their harshest tests that I had ever been through. They placed me in a tank filled with water that was so cold that I could barely breathe. I was forced to swim in that tank of cold water as the scientists tested me to see how long I could withstand the freezing temperature. I swam in that tank for about an hour before I put my plan into action. The scientists were shocked when I suddenly dived down to the bottom of the tank and stayed down there. They must have expected me to swim up to the surface after being underwater for about a minute. I sure proved them wrong as I stayed down at the bottom of the tank longer than they had expected. My lungs burned as they begged for air, but I stubbornly stayed down at the bottom of the tank. Another few hours passed before I couldn't hold my breath any longer. My mouth opened and I began to swallow in cold water, which burned as it passed down my throat. The scientists began to panic when they saw that I wasn't going to come up. I pretended to fall unconscious as the scientists started to drain the water within the tank. They lowered the walls of the tank to get at me easier. But what they didn't know was that I was prepared with a new trick that I've secretly learned within my cell.
When they were close enough, I made my move. I flashed opened my eyes and leapt up into the air above the scientists. I hovered about twenty feet in the air before I threw my arms out to the sides. As I did a blast of electricity burst out from the palms of my hands. The electricity from my hands zapped wildly within the room as multiple bolts struck the machines that were stationed in there. The machines that were struck by the electricity exploded, which caused a massive fire, and the scientists were forced to run as they tried to escape the blaze. I quickly ran out of the room while the scientists were panicking within the chaos. I ran through the facility, while shooting electricity at every security camera that came into my sight. It didn't take me long to find the exit and escape from the building that I had been imprisoned in for ten months. I ran as far away from the building as I possibly could and never once looked back. Not even when I heard a loud explosion behind me. The sound of screaming echoed through the air, but I didn't care that they were the cries of people in pain. All I cared about was that I was finally free, and that I was never going back to the lab that had been my prison. At least...that's what I thought, until I found myself constantly on the run from the people who wanted to recapture me. I was always on high alert for no matter where I go, those men in black suits would appear in the same places that I would come to rest in. I later learned that they were able to track me through the shock collar I still wore around my neck. After figuring that out, I used my claws to cut the collar off of my neck before throwing it into a nearby river. Once I was freed from the collar I continued to wander through Japan, while always on the lookout for the people who are searching for me. This continued on for two weeks, until I stumbled upon an old temple and took shelter inside a storehouse. What I didn't know at the time was that taking shelter in that storehouse would change my life forever. My name is Nariko...and this is my story.
