I do now own Bones, I do own the OCS.
Just an idea that popped up in my head.
What is hidden in the snow?
It had been snowing for hours and didn't look like it would stop anytime soon, FBI agent James Aubrey was walking home to Dr Brennan and Booth to have dinner with the rest of the Jeffersonian team, he had was just a few meter from the house that belonged to his boss and friend when he saw something red in the snow at first he didn't think anything about it but then he faintly heard something and the red thing moved ever so slightly at first it sounded like a kitten meowing but not quite.
Aubrey rushed over and started digging in the snow to find a child in a thin red jacket and a pair of equality thin pair of jeans, the child did have a woolly hat on but it was clearly worn down too and didn't offer any type of warmth, the child was shaking from the cold.
"Hey kid," James said and shook the child's shoulder "Why are you out here?"
The child didn't answer at all, instead it looked up at James with big green eyes in a small pale face that had blue lips from cold.
"Hey kid," Aubrey said shaking the child's shoulder but still didn't get reaction from the child and the green eyes had closed he touched the cheek of the child and pulled his hand away as if he had been burn but it was not heat he had felt it was cold, the child was so cold it was like touching ice.
Aubrey remembered what he had learn from the latest first aid session back at the FBI, he know that he had to get the child into the warmth and warm it up or it would die of the cold, so he picked the child up and nearly ran the few meters that was between him and the Booth/Brennan's home, he didn't bother with knocking instead he nearly fell throw the door with the bundle in his arms.
"HELP!" he screamed as he busted in scaring the living daylight out of the other that had already arrived "I need help here!"
It was Cam who was closest that reacted first she rushed over to Aubrey and took the now still bundle from him.
"What happened?" she asked
Aubrey told his friends how he had found the child hidden under the snow.
"It's the new family," Booth said "What was their name? Hendersen or something like that, but I thought they were on a vacation this week and next."
"Yes they are," Bones said "I saw them this afternoon all packed up in that minivan they have driving off. But I am almost sure this is one of their children."
Cam had put the child down on the sofa and started to take the now wet and still icy cold clothes of.
"We need blankets thick ones," she said sending Booths running after the thick blanket his mom had send then a while ago.
He come back with the dark marine blue blanket and soon was the child wrapped up in it.
"Now we have to wait and see if we can get her temperature up and if she will wake up," Cam said looking down at the still child with blue lips.
"Something feel weird about this," Bones said "Who would forget a child like that?"
Booth then the others nodded they agree with her, Booth stood up from his chair and said that he would go and check the house to see maybe there were a clue about what had happened, maybe the child was not one of the Hendersen children.
He returned frowning deeply and said that he had not found anything, the place was empty.
Cam check the temperature of the child and found that it had risen a few degree which was good a slow rise was good.
"Who could do this to a child?" Angela wondered out loud looking at the face of the child she looked like she was just sleeping the blue tone on her lips had started to fade back to their normal pink colour.
"Maybe she has run away or just got loss and her parents are looking for her," Hodgins said hoping that that was the case.
"I will call the police and check if anyone has reported her missing," Booth said and walked to call
But he was soon back shaking his head in a silence no, no child had been reported missing that week.
"Mummy," a voiced called from behind them "We are really hungry."
Bones turned around to see two children standing there trying to look the picture of hungry.
"Well we can have hungry children," Bones said smiling "Dinner will be ready in a few more minutes okay go and play some more."
Michael and Christine nodded and took of laughing, and little Hank only a toddler was happy playing in his toy pen.
"Well better start the dinner," Bones said
Angela jumped on the chance to help her, it was not much just reheating it a bit.
Cam check again and the girl's temperature had risen a bit more.
"Do you think she will wake up soon?" Aubrey asked worried
"I don't know maybe," Cam said "She was really cold when you get in, but Aubrey you most likely saved her life, if not for you she would not have survived much longer."
"Dinner is ready!" Called Bones soon after.
Christine and Michael come running it was first now that they notice the girl lying on the sofa.
"Who is that?" asked Christine and pointed at the girl.
"We don't know," Booth said to his daughter "Aubrey found her on the snow."
"Why were she in the snow?" asked Michael
"We don't know that either champ," Said Hodgin "but come on let's eat before it get cold."
Aubrey didn't move from his place on the floor beside the little girl wrapped up in the blue blanket.
"I think I will stay here," He said softly "If she wake up."
Booth nodded and told his young friend that he would fix him a plate and a beer to drink, Aubrey thanked him.
He didn't want to leave the poor child alone of she woke up and got scared.
Aubrey eat fast and gave the plate back to Booth who was on dish washing duty that day.
Soon had Cam also clean her plate and returned to Aubrey's side checking on the child.
"She should wake up soon," Cam said softly "Her temperature is a lot better."
Aubrey just nodded and stroke the now warm cheek softly, this made the girl frown and start move around she borrow her face into the warm blanket.
"She is waking up!" Aubrey called out
All the grown up rushed over to the bundle on the sofa that was indeed waking up.
She open her green eyes and looked around and saw seven unknown grownups all looking at her, with a scream she tried to hide behind the sofa but with her been wrapped up tightly in the blanket just made her fall off the sofa instead or she would have fallen off if not for Aubrey who catch her and helped her up.
"Hey kid take it easy," he said gently and help her to unwrap the blanket a bit so that she could sit up better.
"Here I made a mug of sweet tea for you," Bones said and gave a steaming mug to the still bewildered child who took a sip while still watching the grown up like she was scared of them.
"Hello little one," Arastoo said gently "Do you remember what happened? Why you were out in the snow storm?"
The girl looked at him but didn't say anything just sipped on her tea.
She didn't what to say so she did the only thing she could think of she didn't say anything at all.
"Maybe she is in shock," Booth said "Let's her rest maybe she will start telling us what happened later when she is ready."
The other grownups agreed, Cam and Arastoo begun a discussion about something that had to do with bug with Hodgins, Angela and Bones decided to see what Christine and Michael was doing, Booth picked up the now sleeping Hank and went to put him to bed leaving only Aubrey and the girl alone.
The two sat one on the sofa and on the floor in silence for a few moments.
"How are you feeling?" he ask her
The girl just shrugged her shoulders a bit, she wasn't really cold anymore but she wasn't warm either.
"Am James by the way," Aubrey said "I was the one that found you."
The girl nodded and smiled a bit, the man seemed nice she thought, she wondered if she should tell him or not but before she could decide anything her stomach started growling loudly.
"Oh I can hear that someone is hungry," Aubrey said smiling "Wait here I will see if I can get you something.
The girl nodded and looked after Aubrey.
It didn't take long for him to return with a bowl of warm mac'n'cheese.
"I hope you like mac'n'cheese," Aubrey said and gave the girl the bowl.
She wolf down the food.
"I guess you like it," a voice said
The girl's head turn and looked at the tall man with short buzz cut like hair, he was smiling but was he really nice or just pretending to be nice?
"Hello little lady," Booth said and sat down beside Aubrey "I am Seeley and this is my home."
The girl just nodded and then she yawn, she was just so tired all of a sudden. Aubrey and Booth looked on as the girl yawn and her eyes grow heavier and soon was she off into dreamland.
"I think it is best if she get some rest come on Aubrey," Booth said and got the young man to follow him into the kitchen part of the house where the others waited.
"She is asleep," Aubrey said "She eat a bowl of mac'n'cheese."
"So what do we do with her?" Cam asked "Do we call the social service or?"
"I think we should wait and ask her about her family," Angela said "Maybe she is just lost."
But no one believed that not even Angela herself.
"Well while she sleeps how about we have some ice cream?" Bones said "The kids have been asking about ice cream."
The girl was awoken by Christine and Michael by accident they had meant to sneak up and have a look at the person that was asleep on the sofa, but Christine had stepped on one of Hanks toys that would laugh loudly when squeezed.
The girl jump half a meter and stared at the two children a few years younger than her she guess.
"Sorry," Christine said then she remembered her manners "I am Christine nice to meet you."
"And I am Michael," Michael said not to be out done by his best friend.
"Hello," the girl said "I am Mac."
"Why did you sleep in the snow?" Michael asked
Mac frown she hadn't meant to fall asleep in the snow and she said as much too.
"It's good that Uncle James found you," Christiane said and Michael nodded "Or you would have died."
This was not news to Mac she knew it was bad to fall asleep in the snow but she couldn't help it, but for some reason it really hit home how closed she may have been to dying and tears started to well up in her eyes.
"MUMMY!" both Christine and Michael screamed
Soon footsteps could be heard as Angela and Bones come rushing in to see why their two children was screaming for them, the rest of the adults was just a few steps after the mummies.
"What's the matter?" Angela asked
"Mac is crying," Michael said pointing at the silence crying girls.
"Hey Mac," Aubrey said as he squatted down so that he was on her level "Why the water work? Are you missing your mommy and daddy?"
Mac only cried and shook her head, Aubrey looked a bit lost before he decided to try something his mom had done when he was really sad, he sat down beside Mac and rubbed her back mumbling comforting word in a low gentle voice, Mac turn and borrowed her face into Aubrey's sweater, she cried but never loud just sobs could be heard sometimes, and after what for Aubrey felt like hours it slowed down the crying girl was once again fast asleep but was still holding onto the sweater like it was lifeline and she would drown if she let go off him.
Aubrey looked up at the others and saw that they all was thinking the same.
"I don't think she will let me go," he said softly looking down at the sleeping child.
"What are we going to do?" Bones asked
"I have no idea," Booth said
"I know one thing Mac is coming with me home tonight," Aubrey said "And tomorrow we will see, but something smell fishy to me about this."
"I will fetch her clothes," Booth said and walked to do just that.
Soon was Aubrey standing with Mac in his arms still wrapped up in the thick blanket, in a bag that was hanging over Aubrey's arm was Mac's clothes now dried and folded.
"We will see you two tomorrow," Bones said in a voice that left no room for argument "We will get to the bottom off this."
Aubrey nodded and smile thankfully that he had so great friends.
The walk to his car was not too long and it had stopped snowing when he walked passed the house where he found Mac a few hours earlier he saw that the hole that he had dug to found her was gone, the snow had filled it and then some, the thought of Mac still being there if he had not notice her send chill down his spine.
He somehow managed to place Mac in the back of his car without her waking up, he then drove home to his apartment.
Mac didn't make a sound when he picked her up again and carried her into his apartment, he had never been so happy that it was on the second floor, he somehow both unlocking the door and open it without waking the sleeping child, with a soft kick he closed the door he would lock it later.
Tonight he would sleep on the sofa, Mac could have the bed and with that decided he walked to the bedroom there he tucked in Mac.
