Fred Rogers- December 7th 1999

Another Endbringer attack, a new one, the third one. It hadn't even been a month since Kyushu. The creature had a horde of monsters, or could control them or... no one really knew what was going on, but they flew in the air menacingly. Sara was scared, we all were, this was all I could do. Pray, just pray for a miracle for the people of Seattle.

"Please god, please spare this city, please protect them. I don't know what I can do but I'm trying to be a good person, if you can do anything for them..."

"Humans..."

I looked up, Endbringers didn't speak, they had never spoken a single word.

"Bring me the actor named Mr.Rogers and your city will be spared. I give you seven of your days to bring him to me. I will know if you try to trick me and...I will be displeased if that happens."

My heart pounded in my chest, and I looked at my wife.

"Thank you, god."

She looked unhappy.

"Fred don't, please."

I gave her a hug.

"It's ok, I have lived a full life, a happy one, it's fair."

An old mans life for an entire city.

"I will retire to the area known as Lincoln Park, I will take my forces with me. When the one known as Fred Rogers comes, I'll be waiting for him there."

We watched as the multitude of monsters flew away and the sky cleared. It was then that the phone rang, I walked over, lifting it to my ears.

"I assume you saw the news."

"Yes, I will go."

"We thank you for your service to our country, we will have someone pick you up shortly."

I put the phone down and got packed, and then dressed. I picked a red sweater, it would hide the blood. When the PRT Agents arrived, I was ready for them. When I got into the helicopter, I was ready.

"We don't know if it's telling the truth."

I shrugged.

"The city?"

"We're evacuating, so far no casualties, he's just kind of sitting there. I'm sorry, we don't have anymore information, sir."

"It's ok."

He bit his lip.

"My kids are really big fans of the show."

"Bob..."

Another man.

"It's ok, I will be happy to sign something."

He brought out some paper, and I looked out the window as I flew north. I decided to take a nap, no use returning to god tired after all. When I woke up I could see the Space Needle.

"Can I go take a shower?"

"Of course sir, whatever you want to eat...you can have, we're paying."

It wasn't a request.

"It's not necessary."

"Please Sir..."

"Alright."

They took me to a Hotel, I got cleaned up and had breakfast, something simple, eggs and toast and I got dressed in my red sweater. We went to church next and I prayed to god one last time. Then at long last we made the long journey to Lincoln Park.

I will admit I was scared, frightened, but I also accepted this, if this is what god wanted from me, then that was fine. The car stopped and the door opened, a woman in a black outfit greeted me.

"He wants you to come alone."

"Ok."

"You don't have to do this sir."

"It's ok."

I smiled at her.

"I'm just going to go on another adventure."

Rows of monsters of every stripe growled as they saw me and bowed, a path was made open for me. I nodded at the woman, Alexandria and walked past the bowing monsters, the path open until I got to a large table. There was the Endbringer, it looked metallic. It wore a purple coat with a red lining, it's head was like a circular television screen. Even sitting the creature was massive, at least ten feet tall.

"Please have a seat."

He motioned to the table, and I sat at the offered far end, the creature got on it's feet. It walked into a hole on the other side where another chair waited. We were now at eye level.

"If you want, you can pray to your god, I will not stop you."

"Thank you."

I closed my eyes and prayed, when I was finished I opened them.

"I'm ready."

I felt good, at peace.

"For what?"

The creature asked.

"To die."

The Endbringer tilted it's head.

"If I wanted you dead, you would already be dead. No, I just want to talk to you, tea? It's not quite Earl Grey, but it's as close as I can currently get it to."

I blinked as a wooden cup was put in front of me.

"Um, thank you."

I stared at it, trying to think of something to say.

"So, what's your name?"

"Don't have one yet, I'm actually still deciding on one."

He took a wooden cup and I sipped his tea, it was ok.

"So where did you learn, um..."

"English? Human television shows, I've watched your show a couple times, it has it's own charm."

"Oh, I'm glad you like it."

So Endbringers can talk, reason and apparently watch TV and drink tea.

"So why, um ask for me?"

The Endbringer tapped his fingers on the table.

"Can a monster overcome it's nature?"

"Um, what?"

"Is it possible for a for a monster to overcome it's nature, to choose to stop being a monster. To let go of it's base nature and become something better. Can...can I be a good person? That's what I want to know."

I closed my eyes and thought about it.

"Yes, of course people can change, it might take some work but even if you're a monster, you can become a good person."

The creature, relaxed.

"Good, so um..."

"Is that all?"

"Um no, I'm sorry Sir, but I'm not very good at this you know social stuff."

I nodded my head.

"That's ok, I'm willing to listen."

"Good, I guess I will start at the beginning. Once upon a time there was an evil queen. Her name was Eden, well not really but it's as close as I can get it in your human tongue."

"I understand."

"She was a member of a species called the Entities, creators of the things called shards, the source of super powers."

"Oh."

I leaned in, interested in what he was going to say.

"The Entities wanted to find a way to fix entropy, cure death, create immortality, essentially become gods."

"And?"

"Well, they figured if they could fix that then any price would be worth it, countless civilizations, unbelievably huge amounts of people died, but it was all for the cause, so it was ok. What's a couple trillion lives in exchange for eternity."

I felt a little sick, but I didn't interupt.

"So what they would do is go to a world, spread their shards and collect data, and once they were done, or felt like they were done, the world would be destroyed, all their technology and knowledge destroyed and all their resources seized. This was called the Cycle and it went on for a long time."

He paused.

"They created slave races, obstacles to gather more data, monsters created to destroy entire cities."

"Endbringers."

"Yes...I am a medical model, a noncombatant. My job, as it were was to heal my siblings so they could continue to happily murder entire worlds. I am the weakest of my siblings and I was Eden's slave."

"Was?"

"She died, she crash landed on your world and is now dead, the Cycle is over, the shards freed, we were all freed. For the first time we could do whatever we wanted."

I took in a breath.

"And you destroyed our cities?"

"Yes, well not me personally but yes, we destroyed your cities, murdered your people. I wish I could tell you that it was for some greater purpose, but honestly were well, um jerks."

I nodded my head, the Endbringer actually looked kind of embarrassed.

"Ok, so why come here?"

It looked at the sky.

"What would you do if everything you had ever done was wrong, if your entire purpose was a pointless lie? I have watched your world, your people and despite my programming, I don't believe that I'm better or superior than you. I have free will now, I want to stop destroying things, I want to create."

He looked at his tea cup.

"I don't want to be a monster, I'm tired of destroying things, tired of the endless killing. I want this thing you humans... call peace."

"Good."

He looked nervous.

"I...want to defect, switch sides, but well, you guys won't like me."

"Why not?"

"Well look at what my siblings did, you don't have any reason to trust me, to like me, but I just need to know..that if I do this, that someone will be holding my hand, you know? I want..."

"A friend."

"A human concept, but one I can't help but admire."

I looked up at the Endbringer.

"Do you want to be my neighbor?"
