Chapter 1

Reva's eyes widened as her own lightsaber stuck out of her chest. This was the most cruel way for her to die. She would've preferred to be killed by Kenobi than to die staring into the face of the monster she had spent so long trying to destroy, only to fail now. Her only consolation was that it wasn't the face of Anakin Skywalker, the face her fellow younglings died looking into all those years ago, but it was a small comfort to be looking instead at the dark giant that had consumed him. As Reva breathed her last and slumped over onto the ground, Vader looked down on her form in bitter satisfaction. With the Third Sister dealt with, it was now time to take care of Kenobi. He turned to the newly reinstated Grand Inquisitor. "Return to the Devastator. We must move swiftly to continue our pursuit of Kenobi and the Path," Vader ordered, walking right by his troops. Suddenly, static crackled faintly. Vader stopped in place, and all the stormtroopers began to fidget nervously. Having not heard the static, they assumed that Lord Vader was angry. As such, they were all preparing themselves to either run or point fingers at each other, whichever seemed more appropriate. They all jumped slightly as Vader raised his head, then swiftly turned around and walked up to a little broken device laying nearby on the ground.

Vader stared at the curious little device, intrigued, as it started to spark and create a flickering image. Vader recognized the figure as Bail Organa, the Senator from Alderaan. Interesting, Vader thought. It seems that Organa is another cowardly traitor. Then came the really valuable information. The recording of Organa looked at Vader, and played out its pre-recorded message from a recent call. "Obi-Wan," Senator Organa said, a grave expression on his face. "If he's found you- *distortion* I'll head to Tatooine. Owen w- *distortion* -help the boy." and with those few words, the message flickered out of existence, the comm dying. Vader looked into empty space with confusion, trying to concentrate and find useful information from these few, scrambled words. Suddenly, he felt incredibly enraged. Tatooine. Vader clenched his teeth beneath his helmet. That planet had only ever hurt him. He hadn't returned since… he blinked tears out of his eyes, desperate not to let them escape and wreak havoc on his internal wiring, remembering a walk through the desert with an annoying, snarky Padawan. The desert is merciless. It takes everything from you. Then he thought of something even worse. Owen. As in Owen Lars?! The weakling who failed to protect his own stepmother from Tusken Raiders, even though she was the kindest woman to ever live, even though he was the only one who could have. Not the ONLY one, a snide voice in his head remarked.

Mentally silencing the voice, Vader continued to try to put the pieces together. Around him, the stormtroopers and the Grand Inquisitor were now all watching Vader, no one knowing what was happening in his head, not one of them brave enough to break him from his concentration. Vader was still struggling to find useful information from these words, when he added in the last words. 'Help the boy.' What could that mean? What 'boy' could Obi-Wan and Senator Organa be trying to help? Suddenly, Vader blanched. The boy. Tatooine. Obi-Wan. Owen. Organa. Obi-Wan had been a trusted ally to Senator Organa since the Clone Wars. Obi-Wan had gone with a pregnant Padmé hours before her death to who knows where. Could she have- No, his Master had told Vader that he killed Padmé. What remained of Anakin had visited the tomb. Vader wasn't welcome there. But could she have possibly delivered their child? If it were possible, then all the pieces would fit together. Organa and Kenobi being in league, Owen Lars' involvement, 'the boy', the unique presence in the Force Vader had been sensing for years… and Tatooine. Decision made, turning around, Vader walked out of the hangar while saying, "Change of plans. Forget Kenobi. Forget the Path. Send TIE Fighters to pursue them, and get us to Tatooine."

The stormtroopers followed his orders without question, but the Grand Inquisitor was in shock. Why would they go to Tatooine? He may have hated the Third Sister's independent and arrogant attitude, but deep down he too sought to hunt bigger targets than the barest scraps of remaining Jedi. The discovery of the Path and their success at getting Kenobi in their sights for the first time in over ten years was the perfect opportunity to crush a powerful Jedi and several Jedi sympathizers in one fell swoop, and Lord Vader wanted to go to Tatooine? Growling lowly in frustration, the Grand Inquisitor took one last look at Reva's fallen form. Remembering the satisfaction of her finally being dealt with, the Inquisitor was able to compose himself. Next time, Jedi, the Grand Inquisitor thought to himself before he followed the rest out of the hangar.
