Our Love Will Change the World

Chapter 1: Love

They had been so happy, the happiest they had ever been.

When he discovered that his friend's sister had grown into a beautiful, vibrant and passionate young woman, Harry didn't know. It had happened naturally and gradually without Harry noticing until it was thrown in his face. Harry remembered when she hardly spoke, yet Harry could safely say that some of the wittiest, fun and challenging conversations of his life had been with Ginny.

It was these conversations that Harry missed the most. Now they hardly spoke to one another, and more than anything, this thought made Harry sick to his stomach.

Not much changed after they started dating. One would almost assume they were still friends until they caught the couple snogging. But, in truth, they spent most of their time talking and hanging out with their friends. The significant difference, though, was how much closer they had gotten. Their conversations grew more personal, talking about things they never told anyone, not even the Hermione and the Weasleys, with who they were very close.

They kept their conversations light most of the time, and as Harry sat alone outside the Burrow on a dreary summer afternoon, he remembered one of the last conversations they shared. Like most of them, it was about Quidditch.

"Ginny, I know you want to play Quidditch professionally, but I meant what position." Harry shook his head as he took a punch to the arm.

"Afraid I'm going to steal your position as Seeker." Ginny quipped back, laughing as they walked along the black lake. It had been sunny that day, though Harry could see the gathering clouds in the distance, a fitting omen if there ever was one.

"You already have." Harry laughed good naturally. "I question whether I should switch to the Beater. It would be nice dishing out the bludgers for once."

"Rubbish, I know I'm good, and of course, I fly circles around you a chaser, but you don't need to lie to make me feel good. You're the best Seeker Hogwarts has ever seen."

"Ginny, I say this not as your boyfriend but as your captain. You're a better seeker than I could ever be." Harry answered honestly as he politely ignored the stunned look in Ginny's eyes.

"You really mean that, don't you," Ginny whispered, and Harry shrugged nonchalantly. Ginny wrapped her arm around his should and shook her head. "Harry Potter, what you are, is a keeper."

Harry groaned even as his heart swelled. "That was terrible, Ginny."

"Terrible? I'm rather proud of that, thank you very much." Ginny shot back, a humorous spark in her eyes. "I'm serious, though. You're a keeper. You defend the people, even those you don't know. It's in your nature to be a Keeper. It's a pity the Harpies only allow women on the team. We'd make a great team."

"Yeah, well, I doubt I'll have time for Quidditch." Harry thought wistfully, his mind wandering to the coming storm.

Ginny seemed to notice the direction his thoughts were taking him and gave him a playful shove to bring him out of it. "That's right. You don't want to be a professional Quidditch player. You have your heart set on the Aurors."

Ginny's smile fell as she noticed the grimace on Harry's face and came to a stop. "Harry?"

Harry was silent, occasionally glancing at Ginny as if a great battle was being waged in his head. Ginny waited patiently and slipped her hand into Harry's to offer support. They shared a look, and Harry immediately knew what Ginny was telling him. He didn't have to share anything he didn't want to, which gave him the courage to speak. "I don't want to be an Auror."

Ginny could tell by how Harry's eyes widened that he had never revealed this before, not even to himself. Then, finally, Harry took a deep breath and uttered. "I…wanted to fight, and I still want to fight, as much as the idea… It's not that I want to. But, I couldn't live with myself if I didn't, even without the…."

Harry paused as if something was stuck in his throat. Then, Ginny finished his sentence for him. "Even if you weren't the Chosen One."

Harry looked at Ginny, startled, before looking down and nodding his head. Ginny closed her eyes and took a shaky breath as she let the weight of the truth rest on her shoulders and pulled Harry into a hug. After a moment of comfort, Harry finally broke the silence. "How long have you known."

"About a minute," Ginny replied airily, though her humorous tone now felt forced. "I suspected since I saw the prophecy with your name on it, and then the Daily Prophet started spouting off about that Chosen One nonsense. It seemed a bit out there, even for them. So I asked Luna about it, and she said, the most outlandish stories often hold the most truth…it all clicked after that."

"I…I meant to tell you, but…." Harry looked away bashfully. "I tend to forget those things when I'm with you."

Ginny's heart fluttered at the compliment, and she kissed Harry on the cheek before changing the subject. "So, what do you want to do…after the war."

The question seemed to catch Harry off guard, and he didn't speak for a long while. They weren't usually this silent around each over, but the silence never grew uncomfortable. Likewise, they were rarely awkward around each other.

Ginny noticed the tears in Harry's eyes, and her heart clenched at the implication behind them. "Harry?"

Harry broke out of his musing by the sound of Ginny's voice, and as he turned to look at her, his breath left him. The sunlight shined behind her, and Ginny's hair resembled fire. Her skin was as white as snow, and her eyes held such a warmth that Harry could stare into them for hours. Harry didn't realize he was speaking until the words left his lips. "I have no idea, but I can't imagine my life without you."

Ginny's eyes widened, and her hand went to her chest. Harry, thinking he had said something wrong, meant to apologize, but it never came, as Harry realized he spoke true. Ginny looked away, and Harry could swear she was hiding tears. Then he heard her voice crack as she retorted. "The snogging must be good then."

Ginny's banter was one of her strengths, so this sorry response stood out like a sore thumb. Neither of them was great when dealing with their emotions, but Harry wasn't Gryffindor for nothing. "It's not just the snogging, Ginny…your…my best friend."

"Shut up," Ginny uttered as she turned away, and from behind a mane of red hair, a small voice whispered. "You going to make me cry."

Harry smiled as he turned Ginny around and held her to his chest. They said nothing for a while, just reveling in their feelings for one another. Harry noted it was the first time he had ever seen Ginny cry.

It was funny, Ginny had such a larger-than-life personality that had entranced Harry, but it was only when he held her that he realized how small Ginny was. Harry was notoriously short for his age, but Ginny barely reached his shoulders. Ginny was as strong as anybody Harry had met, but he forgot how vulnerable she was.

Harry never wanted to be overprotective of Ginny, he knew she could take care of herself, but he saw the storm clouds blocking the sun. Dark times were ahead, and Harry knew that as strong as she was, it might not be enough…for any of them.

As the first drops of rain began to fall, Harry broke the silence and whispered. "You mind not telling Ron and Hermione that? They'd die of envy."

Ginny gave a low chuckle before kissing Harry. It was reminiscent of the Cho kiss, wet, which was ironic considering how different it was. Even as the rain began to pour down, Harry felt like the sun shone down upon them. Harry had experienced so many amazing and wonderous things since he found out he was a wizard, but all the magic in the world paled to the wonder of kissing this wonderful woman who had stolen his heart.

They broke apart and booked it towards the castle, laughing. As they ran, Harry could not help but feel something had changed between them. Harry couldn't put a word to his feelings…but the word would come to him when he was back at Private Drive, lamenting what he had lost. It was a word that Dumbledore spoke of often, a word that had filled Ginny's heart as Harry held her by the lake. It was a word that would change everything and reshape the wizarding world as we knew it.

Harry sighed fondly at the memory before it faded into the past, leaving him in this bitter present. Harry remembered fondly that despite his request to Ginny, not 30 minutes later, she was boasting about her newfound status of best friend to Ron and Hermione. Hermione had beamed and wiped a tear from her eye. Ron just started gaging.

After that, they had lounged about in the common room, joking around about dragon tattoos. Then Dumbledore's summons arrived, and nothing was ever the same.

Now Harry was alone, surrounded by friends and family, and occasionally even Ginny. Yet it did not matter, for he had lost what was most precious to him. Even now, Harry contemplated whether he had done the right thing. In many ways, he felt he hadn't but that undoing his mistake would only make the situation even worse.

On the other hand, he was marked by more than a scar. Those close to him were now in grave peril.

Little did Harry know that Ginny was watching him from her room, neither knowing how similar their thoughts were at that moment. While Harry wondered if Ginny hated him, she was wondering something similar.

Sure, Harry broke up with her, for noble reasons, of course, but it left a rather large void in her heart. Was it purely for noble reasons? Did Harry love her, or even like her? Or did Harry not want to lead her on. Maybe Harry's affection for her had wained as it had for Cho. Even if Harry did have feelings for her, would they survive the war? Would he survive at all?

Ginny had been in a foul mood since returning home to the Burrow, but now she was a ticking time bomb. Though Ron and Hermione would follow him into that peril, the same could not be said for Ginny, who would not turn 17 for another year. The trace was still upon her, like a shackle, a ball'n chain keeping her from following Harry into the breach.

Ginny pulled at her hair and kicked her dresser in frustration. When the dresser made a fuss, she threatened to blow it up, and it fell silent once more. Ginny had never been more nervous in her whole life. Following Harry and her friends into the Department of Mysteries seemed like a breeze.

Today was Harry's Birthday, and Ginny had a plan. Ginny wasn't the type to ponder questions. Instead, she was going to get answers, one way or another.

Ginny steeled herself as she invited Harry into her room and was thankful when Hermione pulled Ron off by the ear. She loved her brothers, but none of them seemed to realize she was a woman, not a girl. Harry was nervous around her, and Ginny could relate, but she had the upper hand. She wished him a happy birthday and spoke of presents, Veela, and other rubbish. Then Ginny pounced!

She kissed Harry as she had never kissed him before, and to her eternal joy, Harry kissed back. The two young lovers embraced each over like one who was drowning, breathed in the air, and felt alive again. Ginny was overwhelmed with pleasure as things grew hotter than they ever had before. Ginny remembered when she would pine for Harry in this room, and now she was finally his. Kissing Harry made Ginny feel alive.

Just as Ginny began to reconsider how far she would allow things to go, Ron showed up as if he heard her thoughts and…naturally ruined everything. Hermione pulled Ron away, scolding him as Ginny felt her heart shatter into a thousand pieces. Ginny had been so fixated on her plan that she had not realized what really happened until the moment was over. She was kissing Harry goodbye.

Ginny turned away, as Harry had seen her done before, and a hollow goodbye left his lips as he turned to follow Ron and Hermione. At least that's what he tried to do before he heard the softest of sniffles and turned to see Ginny's shoulders shaking. Harry's heart swelled with grief as he realized the same thing. This was goodbye.

Harry remembered that day by the Black Lake and realized that his dream had turned into a nightmare. Harry couldn't see his life without Ginny, yet that was what awaited him. Harry tried to leave, he tried to do the right thing, but he no longer knew what that was. Harry knew if he walked out that door without…, he would never be able to forgive himself. He knew Ron would be mad at him, but he didn't understand. Ginny wasn't just some girl he fancied…she was everything.

For a moment, Harry was back in privet drive. He remembered hiding his tears as he stared at a picture of Ginny, realizing what he had felt by the Black Lake and what had changed between them. He had felt something similar when he looked at pictures of his parents, but it was never this strong.

After knowing her for six years, Harry, at last, understood what Ginny meant to him, and it was too late. You don't know what you got till it's gone. They paved paradise, put up a parking lot.

Then Harry remembered he wasn't at the Dursleys. He was in the Burrow, standing in Ginny's room while she cried, not three feet away, oblivious to his presence. It wasn't too late.

As he had done by the Black Lake, Harry approached Ginny and pulled her into his arms. Ginny began to push away before realizing who it was and then pulled him into a tender kiss, not at all like the first one they shared. This one was gentle and passionate. It did not burn like fire whiskey but soothed the spirit like most cleansing of spells. The two young lovers poured their hearts into the kiss, and as they parted. Ginny smiled, though it was not without heartbreak and anguish. "Goodbye, Harry Potter."

Harry didn't have the strength to say goodbye. The last thing he wanted to do was cry in front of Ginny, not when she needed him to be strong. Harry nodded before looking to the door, not trusting himself to speak. He knew this was it. Now or never, they were out of time.

"Ginny…"

"You better go. Before I start crying again." Ginny sniffed, smiling as she tried to burn the picture of Harry into her mind, as he was in this moment. He was a man preparing for war, ready to do whatever it took to defend the world he cared about and everyone in it. "Seriously, I don't want Ron or my mother ruining another…."

"I love you." Harry blurted out, way louder than he intended.

"I know you d…" Whatever Ginny was about to say died on her lips as she tensed up. She blinked twice before looking at Harry with wide bulging eyes that resembled her dreamy friend, Luna. Ginny could hardly breathe, let alone gasp. "Harry?"

"I…I love you, Ginny." Harry whispered, brushing a strand of hair from Ginny's eyes. "I should've told you sooner, or not at all, but…I thought you should know? In case…before…."

Harry closed his eyes and sighed while Ginny just stared at him like a guppy. Then, finally, Harry found his voice and spoke with more confidence. "I don't know what's going to happen, I don't know when I'll ever see you again…or if I'll come back at all, but I want, no, I need you to know, I love you, Ginny Weasley, and I always will. I'm sorry if I ever made you feel otherwise."

Tears were now flowing from Ginny's eyes, she had never felt like such a typical girl, but she couldn't find it in herself to feel anything but love for this stupid, reckless, lovable prat. Harry continued. "You may not feel the same way, and I'm not asking you to wait for me…I just..."

"Shut up!" Ginny kissed him one last time, and though it was short, it was the sweetest of all their kisses. They parted, and Ginny whispered. "Harry I…Harry I..."

The words stuck in her mouth, and she tried to will her mouth to say the words, but so great was her shock she couldn't even speak. One could easily have read this as Ginny's issues with trust and commitment (which were very real) or a sign that she did not share Harry's feelings. Yet as Harry stared into her eyes, he never doubted the love he saw shining up at him, not for one second.

Harry smiled and kissed Ginny on the forehead, causing her to gasp as he whispered. "I know."

And he did know. He knew that Ginny loved him. As sure as he knew he was a Wizard, as sure as he knew he was Harry Potter, and as sure as he knew that the sun rose in the east and set in the west. Harry never doubted Ginny's love for him. At that moment, Harry felt like he could take down Voldemort and all his Death Eaters single handily. As long as Ginny loved him, anything was possible.

A knock on the door broke their trance. Harry turned to the door. "That's Hermione. I reckon she can't hold Ron off for much longer."

Harry gave Ginny a quick, chaste kiss, then backed towards the door. His smile faded as he was filled with a melancholic longing. Harry whispered one last time. "I love you."

Ginny could only stare back, still in shock, as Harry opened and stepped out the door, sparing one wistful glance back as the door shut behind him. It was only then that Ginny heaved violently as her emotions threatened to unravel her. How could one be so happy and so sad at the same time? It was overwhelming to feel the bliss of love and the agony of grief. Finally, she whispered. "I love you too, Harry Potter. Always."

As Harry turned to walk up the stairs, he sighed as a great weight was lifted from his shoulders. He smiled, even with a heavy heart. He knew that dark times were ahead, but this time he would be ready. This time, he had something truly worth fighting for. Finally, he was ready to face his destiny and everything it would bring. Or so he thought.

If Harry had waited a few seconds before shutting the door and was a little less overwhelmed by the love he felt that day, he would have noticed something else. He would have seen the way Ginny's hands clenched into fists or the blazing look in Ginny's eyes, filled with a grim determination unlike any she had felt before. If Harry had waited for a second longer, he would have heard as Ginny found her voice and whispered with overwhelming intensity. "I love you too, Harry Potter. Always."

Ginny pulled out her wand and held it in front of her face of stone, hardened with a newfound determination. Ginny felt a power flow through her veins that shined with endless possibilities. She stared at her wand as she came to grips with a world forever changed, for nothing could take back the words that were spoken and the magic they held.

Dumbledore often spoke of the power of love to Harry, Hogwarts, and once even to Ginny. "There is nothing more powerful than love, for nothing makes us brave and terrified, big yet small, Strong yet weak. Love can change the world, for better and for worse. Wars have been fought, and families have been wrought, bringing us together, yet tearing us apart".

"A time will come when love will touch your heart and shape your destiny. You will be forced to make a difficult choice as I once did, love or duty, love or family. Sometimes, knowing the right choice is not easy. I chose love over family, and I was wrong, then I chose duty over love, and I was right, but my path may yet not be yours, Miss Weasley. When the time comes, listen to your heart, and I have faith you will find the strength, the courage, and the wisdom to do what is right.."

Ginny didn't know what the old wizard was talking about at the time, but it was as if Dumbledore knew this moment would come, and Ginny was ready. She did not know what the future would bring her, and she had no idea the impact her decision would have upon her friends, her family, and the world as she knew it, both Wizarding and mundane. However, Ginny Weasley did know three things.

Ginny Weasley was hopelessly in love with Harry Potter.

As hard as it was to believe, Harry Potter was hopelessly in love with Ginny Weasley.

This changes everything!

Cue the theme song, and don't forget to sing along.

Our love will change the world
Our love will change the world
Into a strange place that you won't recognize
When you look into its eyes

Note from Author

I'm back and trying to get my first novel published. While dealing with writer's block, I started working on an old fanfic idea, and the words started flowing. Yes, I love the Huna pairing, but I have grown really fond of the Hinny pairing. I feel like they never got the shine they deserved. The movie version sucked, and the book version seemed more fixated on Ron and Hermione. It made sense to focus more on the Golden Trio, but I always wondered what would happen if...well, read on to find out. Though this story follows some of the cannon, some of the time, it is not canon. Characters in my fanfiction may not resemble their canon counterparts. I only wish to tell a tale of how things could have gone differently. There will be fluff, but this is not a fluffy story. It will get dark.

Join Harry, Ginny, and friends as their love changes the Wizarding world as we know it. For better and for worse. Will their love survive?
