The number of chapters of this fic is on my profile. If you want to know what this fic is based on, here's the songs: Redo & My Dearest by Amalee. This high school AU follows them pretty well, so I highly recommend you give them a listen (doesn't follow either anime). Faunus exist in this and grimm don't.
~Hope you enjoy~
While on her usual evening jog, her wild blonde mane whipped behind her.
Yang wiped the sweat from her brow, and her eyes lingered on the cherry blossom trees. The warm pink floral swirled into the dimly lit orange sky.
Summer… Yang thought over the music blasting into her ears. You loved this time of year.
To enjoy nature properly, Yang removed her earbuds and kept her stride. She trotted onto the small bridge that overlooked a calm river. This was always her favorite part of the jog. Despite how breathtaking the scenery was, she still felt dull on the inside. Like even the most exciting things seemed bland. It felt like she'd always been that way when it had only been a year.
That's when she saw her.
Only a glimpse of her encouraged Yang to stop jogging, her body giving way to instinct. Even though it was dim outside, Yang was in awe of how strikingly white her hair was. It was white like snow on the purest mountain top where no one dared venture.
The girl leaned onto the railing, watching the river flow with a stoic expression.
Yang tried to step toward her, but her breath had been taken away. It was like the mystery girl was a goddess that beckoned her to admire her beauty.
Introduce yourself, Yang encouraged herself. Be really casual about it. You got this.
With newfound resolve, Yang jogged over to her. Her footsteps were loud to announce her presence so the girl wouldn't be startled by her approach.
"Hi," Yang greeted cheerfully, making sure there was adequate space between them to make her comfortable. "You must be new here."
When the girl turned to face her, Yang could have sworn it was in slow motion. The side ponytail rolled over her shoulder as azure pools locked with lilac. Yang was taken aback by how blue her eyes were. Like the sky.
"What makes you say that?" the white-haired girl asked.
Yang took a moment to process the question since her voice struck her silent. It was melodic. Like it danced into her ears, making her want to hear more.
"Well, ugh…" Yang stumbled as some nervousness sneaked in. "I'd definitely remember someone with hair as beautiful as yours, ice princess."
The girl looked a little surprised by the compliment, which caused Yang to think about dialing back her original approach.
Oh no, I hope I didn't come on too strong.
But her worries dashed when the corners of the stranger's lips faintly turned upward. She put a hand on her hip and used a sassy tone.
"Do you normally hit on people while on your jogs, blonde brute?" she asked, thoroughly amused.
Yang gave her a little chuckle from her reaction. She could handle sass. "Believe it or not, you're the very first. I'm Yang. I'd hold out my hand but I'm pretty sweaty."
"Yang," the girl repeated, which caused the blonde to grin even wider. Her name sounded perfect with her voice. "I'm Weiss."
How does that name fit her so perfectly?
"It's nice to meet you," Yang said, glad to know her name.
Weiss nodded in agreement. "You're correct about your earlier assumption. I moved here today."
"Today?!" Yang couldn't help but yelp, which almost caused Weiss to flinch. "You must've had a long day then. You picked a great neighborhood. You see that building right there?"
The blonde pointed to a tall apartment building in the distance. Weiss leaned closer to her to gauge the building. She narrowed her eyes, spotting it against the other towers. She fell quiet.
"See that? I live right there," Yang informed.
Weiss leaned away. "Why would you tell me that? I could be a psychopath. I could break into your house in the middle of the night."
"Is that what you plan on doing?" Yang asked. "At least give me a heads up beforehand so I can leave the door unlocked and light some candles."
The comment made Weiss stifle a laugh.
"See? I know you're not a psychopath," Yang replied, which caused Weiss to lightly scowl. "And to prove that I know, can you hand me your phone?"
Since Weiss didn't know where this was going, she was curious as to what Yang had up her sleeve. A little reluctantly, she handed the blonde her cell phone and cautiously watched the screen.
"I'm gonna give you my number," Yang said as she opened the contacts, intrigued that Weiss had none. "Feel free to text me. I can show you around your new town, and you can show me you're not a psycho. It's a win-win."
Weiss pinched the bridge of her nose, wishing she hadn't found that humorous. "That's a very high risk you're willing to take."
"Some risks are worth it," Yang said with a smirk and handed her the phone back. She noticed the sky almost warped dark. "Unfortunately, I have to get going. My roommates are about to have dinner without me. Have a good one, Weiss."
"Bye," was all Weiss said.
She watched the blonde gradually become a spec of yellow in the distance. She sighed from how unexpected that interaction was and unlocked the phone. Only one contact had been entered.
The name in bold on her screen was:
Yang (blonde brute).
An amused chuckle.
As soon as Yang sauntered into her humble apartment, she announced her presence.
"I'm baaaack, what's for dinner?!"
In the living room, two girls sat on the couch. A girl in a red hoodie watched TV intently, while the other had her nose buried in a book.
Reluctantly, the cat faunus tore her eyes away from her book. "I was in charge tonight, so guess."
Yang strode to her room and left the door open. "Salmon?"
"Honey-glazed," the faunus added, glad that her roommate grinned from the news.
"You're the best, Blake!" Yang chirped as she let her hair down to run wild. "Rubes, did you take out the trash?"
Ruby sank into the cushions and crossed her arms. "I just finished my summer homework. Can't it wait a few?"
Yang walked out into the living room with a fresh pair of clothes on. This was to prevent her roommates from dying of her stench in the long run.
"I'd rather it not."
Quietly, Yang gathered her plate of food. The run made her famished and she grabbed green beans, a slab of salmon, and some Hawaiian rolls. She sat on the dining chair, away from the living room couch.
Ruby reluctantly stood and groaned. "Ugh, fine."
Casually, Blake pushed her to sit back down. "I'll get it, enjoy yourself while you can. We have a long day tomorrow."
From how thoughtful she was, Ruby gave her a beaming smile. "You really are the best."
Blake said nothing, gathered all the trash, and left the apartment.
"Blake's too nice," Yang leaned back with her hands on the back of her head.
"She's awesome," Ruby agreed and rushed to grab her own plate of food. "How was your run?"
"Interesting," Yang said in an amused tone, leaving Ruby intrigued. "I met a cute girl. She had the whitest hair. I've never seen anyone like her. It was like she was some kind of ice princess or something."
At last, Ruby sat on the chair across from her at the dining table. "You gave her your number, didn't you?"
"Duh," the blonde said. "I hope she texts. She's seriously somethin' else."
Ruby gazed at her nails in boredom. "You say that a lot."
Yang pointed at her, her tone lower. "I actually mean it this time."
In response, Ruby playfully rolled her eyes. Before Yang could retort, the door opened and Blake walked inside, standing at the kitchen counter to grab her own food.
"Hey, did you guys know we got a new neighbor?"
Now that Blake returned, Yang swallowed pieces of the fish. "No way, which number?"
"530," Blake informed and joined the table with her own plate.
After Ruby chewed on some green beans, she said. "Oh wow, so right next to us."
"She has the whitest hair," Blake mentioned, almost devouring the pink salmon. "It's like snow."
Simultaneously, Ruby and Yang lifted their heads up and asked in unison. "What?"
"Yeah," Blake said and chomped on some green beans. "I didn't see her face, but I saw her hair at least. Why?"
"Are you serious," Yang said in exasperation, the realization creeping into her. "That has to be the ice princess. Weiss! There's no one else it could be."
Blake set down her fork in favor of a roll. "Who?"
"The girl I met literally twenty minutes ago on my run," Yang revealed with enthusiasm. "She didn't mention she moved into our building… we should make something for her! As a welcome gift."
Ruby eagerly stood now that her plate was empty. "I vote we make brownies! Who doesn't like brownies?"
Blake liked the idea, but crossed her arms to disagree. "We ran out of vegetable oil."
"But we have plenty of butter," Yang stood and the chair screeched on the marble floor like she was about to make the treats right now.
Blake gave a defeated sigh. Sometimes it was hard to match the sisters' energy.
"Brownies it is."
Solemnly, Weiss stared at herself in the mirror. The frigid air pierced her skin as she gripped the scissors.
I have to do this. This is for her. I promised her. Remember that.
After a heavy sigh, Weiss grabbed a handful of her white tresses and cut straight across. This left her hair down to her mid-back rather than past her hips.
I should go shorter, but I really don't want to.
Deciding that was enough, she dumped the wad of hair in the trash can below the sink. There wasn't much of a difference overall, but her head felt like a feather now.
Beside the sink was a box of light blonde hair dye. This was the part she dreaded the most. She wanted to keep her snow-white hair so badly, but that would draw unwanted attention. It was considered rare in almost all areas of Remnant. There was no way she could blend in if she kept the color.
It would be like a predator spotting an albino animal from the herd.
It might be troublesome that the faunus saw my white hair… I guess it's too late to worry about that now.
Reluctantly, Weiss stepped into the cold bathtub and sat down to prevent a mess. She steadied the portable mirror in front of her and sectioned her hair into fours so the dye would be evenly spread. She began the process of painting it, brushing at the roots and combing through the rest. She also brushed her eyebrows, truly making it seem like this was her natural color.
The entire process took almost an hour since she wanted to be thorough.
She stared at her reflection, feeling a little less dread.
It's not too bad, she thought, a little impressed with herself. I can probably get used to this.
Now that it was properly dyed, Weiss decided to trim her hair to perfection. When she was finished, the ends swooped in a sharp 'U' shape like she'd visited a professional hairstylist.
Ultimately satisfied with her work, Weiss left the bathroom and slinked to the common area of her apartment. It was dark, but the walls were blindingly white and matched the carpet. A small light at the end of her bed guided her.
She dawdled to the corner of the room, where a mattress rested on the floor.
A small TV stood in front of the mattress, and she turned down the volume with a tiny remote. The local news channel played, and she tried to listen, but she was too distracted with her thoughts.
I hope tomorrow goes well.
Whaaaat's going on here!? Her hair is a really light blonde now, so light that it's almost white so there's not much of a difference. (Think a little platinum). This is posted biweekly.
Stay dandy,
~Toto
