Chapter 1

In the year 845, humanity has been driven to the brink of extinction by the Titans, a species of giant, humanoid monsters that feed on humans. The only remaining population of humans lies behind a series of Walls, ruled by a Royal Government. That's why a military division for exploring outside the Walls, known as the Survey Corps, is devoting the people's hearts to getting as much information as it can.

A boy named Eren Yaegar opens his eyes from a nightmare, he sees two girls by his side: Mikasa Ackerman, and Aya Neumann. Aya is the one waking Eren up as she says, "Wake up, Eren. It'll get dark if we don't go home now."

"Aya...Mikasa..." Eren mutters.

Both girls are carrying the wood behind him and Mikasa asks, "Were you really so sound asleep that you were still dreaming when you woke up?"

Eren sighs, "No, but I feel like I just had the longest dream..."

"What did you dream of?" Aya asks with curiosity, but noticing the tears in his eyes, she frowns, "Why? Why are you crying?"

"Really? I'm crying?" Eren wipes his tears, not sure why he is crying and what he's dreaming of.

Once they get back to the city, Eren sulks and says, "Please, Aya, Mikasa, don't tell anyone that I was crying."

"We won't." Mikasa says. "But crying for no reason, you should have your dad give you a checkup."

"Don't be stupid! Like I can tell my old man about THIS?!" Eren yells.

"But we're worried about you." Aya says.

"What are you crying about, Eren?" A tall Garrison soldier walks up to them. Eren gasps, "M-Mr. Hannes!"

"Did Mikasa get mad at you for something?" Hannes asks.

"Huh?! What makes you think I'm crying? You reek of liquor!" Eren yells.

Aya notices that Hannes and his fellow soldiers have been drinking instead of watching the Walls for Titans, she asks, "Drinking again? What about your work?"

"Oh! We're on gate duty today." Hannes says. "We get hungry and thirsty, hanging out here all day. What's the big deal if liquor happens to be among the rations sometimes?"

Eren asks, "But in an emergency, would you be able to fight drunk?"

"What kind of emergency?" Hannes looks honestly confused, and it causes Eren and Aya to be angry.

"I don't believe this! It's obvious! I'm talking about if they broke down the wall and invade the town!" Eren yells.

Hannes holds his head and says, "Hey, Eren! Don't suddenly raise your voice like that..."

"Hahaha...the doctor's son has spirit!" "If the bastards break through the wall, we'll be on top of the situation. But I tell ya, that hasn't happened in a hundred years!"

"B-but it's dangerous to feel at ease like this! Mr. Yaegar says so!" Aya says.

"Well, you may be right. I'm not gonna second-guess Dr. Yaegar, this town's benefactor. But y'know...when you become a soldier, you get your chance to see 'em, hanging around outside the wall while you're on wall defense duty or whatever...and I just can't picture 'em even putting a dent in this 50-meter fortress."

"Then you're not even prepared to fight 'em in the first place, are you?!" Aya continues to ask.

"If that's the case, stop calling yourselves a "Garrison" and make it the "Wall Construction Corps" instead!" Eren says.

"That ain't a better idea either. But Eren, Aya. You have soldiers on active duty when the situation has gone to hell. On the other hand, when the guys and I are mocked as good-for-nothing sponges, that tells you we're all livin' in a time of peace, am I right?"

"It's just like Hannes says." "Hell...I can't understand those guys in the Survey Corps who wanna go outside the wall!" "But if they wanna have fun playing war, let 'em I say."

Eren is not buying it as he mutters, "We don't have to go outside the wall for our whole lives, we can eat, sleep, and survive just fine here...but isn't that...like being a caged animal?"

"My thoughts also." Aya says.

However, the Garrison soldiers are laughing at them. Mikasa drags them and says, "Eren, Aya, let's just go..."

As they leave, Hannes stares at them and he mutters, "Don't tell me...they want to join the Survey Corps..."

Eren and Aya are lowering their heads with anger, and Mikasa says, "Eren, Aya. You should change your mind about joining the Survey corps."

"Seriously? You're gonna laugh at the Survey Corps too?" Eren asks Mikasa.

Aya says, "Why is everyone thinking that they are just a joke?"

"What I'm laughing at them isn't the issue..." Mikasa says with concern.

The bell rings, which means that the Survey Corps is returning as the front gate opens. Eren says, "The heroes are back! Let's go! Aya! Mikasa!"

Aya blushes as Eren grabs her hand as they run towards the front gate, but their excitement is cut short when he sees that very few members of the Corps have returned with the survivors bloody and broken.

"Are these the only ones who made it back?" "Looks like another massacre this time..." "Even though over 1000 of them set out on the survey..." "There are less than 20 people here...did the rest get eaten?"

A panic-stricken woman rushes into the procession, shouting, "Braun! Excuse me...my son...I don't see my son, Braun, here...where is my son?"

The other Corps members return his only remains to her: a severed arm. Miserably, the commanding officer laments, "That's all we were able to get back...'

The woman kneels while holding the arm, she asks, "But my son...was useful to you, wasn't he? Even if he didn't achieve anything directly, his death brought humanity one step closer to beating them back, right?!"

"Of course!" The commander tries to speak, but then he frowns, "No...our survey this time...this time, too, we...we accomplished nothing! Because of my incompetence! All I did was get my soldiers killed! We didn't get any closer to finding out what those things really are!"

"That's just awful..." "If only they'd stayed inside the wall, they'd all be safe and sound..." "Soldiers are nothing but a waste of our taxes." "It's ridiculous. So basically our taxes are being used to fatten up those bastards by providing them with snacks."

"There you are." Just then, a black-haired girl walks towards them as Eren says, "Katrina?"

"Mom and Dad have been worried about you guys." The girl is Katrina Yaegar, Eren's twin sister. "Aya and Mikasa as well, so you were watching the Survey Corps?"

"Well." Before Mikasa can continue, Eren and Aya punch a man who is speaking ill words to the Survey Corps.

"What do you think you're doing? You little shits!" Mikasa and Katrina quickly drag Eren and Aya away, as Mikasa throws Eren to the wall.

"Hey! What the hell was that for?! Now the firewood's all over the place!" Eren yells at Mikasa.

"Eren, Aya. Have your feelings about joining the survey corps...changed?" Mikasa asks.

"Wait, what were you two thinking?" Katrina gasps in surprise. "You're going to join the survey Corps?"

"Not you too..." Eren mutters.

"Anyway, we should pick these up." Aya mutters while helping Eren with the firewoods.

After coming back to the house, the four of them greet Eren and Katrina's mother and father: Carla Yeager and Grisha Yeager.

"You three are late, and I have to get Katrina to find you." Carla scolds the three of them.

"Yeah, some stuff happened." Aya mutters.

After chatting for a while, Eren asks, "Dad? You're going out now?"

"Yeah. I have to see a patient two towns up." Grisha replies.

Mikasa decides to say, "Eren and Aya said they want to join the Survey Corps."

"Mikasa! I told you not to tell them..." Aya gasps with a hurt tone.

"Eren! Aya! What were you thinking? Do you know how many people have died because they dared to venture outside the wall?" Carla scolds them.

"We know!" Eren says with panic and so is Aya.

"Eren, Aya...why do you want to go outside?" Grisha asks.

"I hate the idea of spending my whole life inside the wall, ignorant of what's happening in the world outside." Eren replies.

"Me too! If there's no one to carry on, everyone who died up to now will have died in vain!" Aya continues.

This causes the whole family to be silence, until Katrina looks at the clock, "Dad...the boat is leaving soon? Shouldn't you go now?"

"I see..." Before he can leave, Carla says, "Wait, honey! Talk some sense into your son and Aya!"

"Carla. It doesn't matter what anyone says. There's no holding back an inquisitive mind." Grisha says. "Eren, Katrina, Aya. When I get home...I'll show you what's in the basement that I've been keeping secret all this time."

"R-really?" This causes the three to gasp in surprise, and Grisha smiles while revealing a key hanging from a string on his neck.

Once Dr. Yeager leaves, Carla says, "Eren, Aya, I won't let you do anything as foolish as joining the survey corps."

"Foolish? The way I see it...people who are satisfied living like caged birds are the real fools!" Eren says.

"I hate to say this, but Eren is right." Katrina says.

"Katrina...not you too..." Then Carla turns to Mikasa and says, "Mikasa, those three are foolhardy, so help them out if they get in trouble."

"I will." Mikasa nods.

As the four of them continue to wander outside, they find their friends Armin Arlert, Peter Fischer, and Odom Wolff being ganged up by people. A bully says, "What's wrong? Heretics? If it hurts, hit me back!"

"There's no way we're going to stoop to your level..." Peter says.

"What's that?" Another bully asks.

"It's because you know what I'm saying is right, that's why the only answer you have for us is your fists." Armin says.

"And that's as good as admitting defeat!" Odom replies.

"S-shut up! You tricky bastard!"

"What do you think you're doing!" When Eren, Mikasa, Aya, and Katrina rush toward them, the bullies are panicking. "Oh no! It's Eren and his group of tough bitches!" "Run!"

After the bullies are gone, Katrina rushes to Odom and asks, "Are you guys all right?"

"We're fine...thanks to Armin, we ran into this kind of trouble." Odom mutters.

"Seriously? What did you say to them this time?" Aya asks.

"When I said the human race should eventually go to the outside world, they punch us and call us heretics." Armin says.

"But you didn't do anything wrong. Why do people frown on even the slightest mention of wanting to go outside?" Eren asks.

"That's because we've lived here peacefully inside the wall for 100 years now. People are afraid that if we go out carelessly, they could get in." Peter says. "Royal government policy says that even having an interest in going to the outside world is taboo."

"In other words, the king is a coward." Eren says.

"I wonder if that's the only reason..." Armin thinks.

"They're our lives! We can do what we want with them, right?" Katrina asks.

"Absolutely not." Mikasa states. "No way."

"That reminds us. Thanks a lot for ranting us out to Ms. and Mr. Yeager!" Aya glares at Mikasa.

"I don't remember agreeing to keep it a secret." Mikasa retorts.

"Wait, what?" Armin is confused.

Eren says, "Mikasa told my parents that Aya and I want to join in the Survey Corps."

"So how'd they take it?" Odom asks.

"They weren't pleased." Katrina says.

"Of course, I told the same thing to my dad, and all I got was rejection as well." Peter says.

"Same here." Odom sighs.

As they see Armin silent, Eren asks, "Are you wanting us to give up on it too?"

Armin says, "Look, I know how you feel, but come on, it's dangerous. I mean, for sure, I think the people who believe we'll be safe inside this wall forever have a screw loose. Just because the wall hasn't been breached in 100 years, there's no guarantee that they won't break through it today, for example."

Just then, a large boom occurs, and they feel the ground shaking. Odom asks, "What's that?"

"Is that an earthquake?" Mikasa asks.

Some people are discussing something as they decide to check it out, and when they notice a smoke, they gasp to see a titan.

"It can't be!" Katrina says.

"Th-that wall's 50 meters high!" Armin says.

"That's... a Titan..." Eren gasps as fear begins to consume him and the others.

"No way..." Odom says. "Even the biggest titans are less than 15 meters tall! For its head to stick out over a 50-meter wall...!"

"Look! It's moving!" Aya says as the titan kicks the wall, causing debris to fly and crush some humans trying to flee and destroy some houses. The seven of them can only gasp in shock.

"It...made a hole in the wall?" Armin gasps.

Then a lot of people start to run, but Eren and Katrina are running the other way. "Eren! Katrina! What are you doing?" Peter yells.

"Those pieces of the wall fell near the houses! Mom's at home!" Eren yells.

Aya and Mikasa gasp as they also chase after them, and Peter says, "It's too late...this town will be overrun by titans!"

The four of them are running as Eren thinks, "There's no way our home got hit!"

They also notice some children crying, blood, boulders, and destruction around them. Everywhere is a nightmare. Katrina says, "Just around the corner, our house is standing there, like always!"

But much to their horror, the house is already destroyed. "MOM!" They run over to find her under the rubble, and it is then their mother slowly wakes up. "Eren, Katrina...is that you..."

"Mikasa, Aya! Hold that! We're gonna move this pillar!" Eren says.

The two nod as they try to help them out, but they hear footsteps and see many giants over the roofs of the houses, wandering around.

"Hurry!" Eren yells.

"We know! We're trying!" Aya says.

Carla says, "The titans got inside, didn't they? Eren! Katrina! Take Mikasa and Aya and get out of here! Now!"

"We want to!" Eren grunts, trying to force the wreckage to move. "So let's hurry and get you out!"

"Come on! Let's get out of here together!" Katrina says.

"My legs got crushed by the rubble. Even if you get me out, I can't run...you understand, don't you?" Carla says.

"We have four people! We can carry you!" Eren says.

"Why don't you listen to me? At least obey me this last time! Mikasa!" Carla cries.

"No...No!" The young girl bows her head crying as well.

Just then, a blonde-haired giant is walking toward them, and another giant with scales on his body is approaching as well.

"All of you, get away from here!" Carla says. "At this rate, all five of us will..."

Just then, Mr. Hannes arrives and he tries to fight the blonde giant. "Mr. Hannes! You mustn't fight it! Take the children and get away!"

"Don't underestimate me, Carla! I'll slay this titan and save all five of you! After what your family did for me, it's high time I paid back the debt!" Hannes says.

But just as Hannes sees the titan in front of him, terror is coming to his face and he feels suffocated. Quickly, he sheathes his swords and turns back, grabbing the four children.

"Mr. Hannes! What are you doing? My Mom is still..." Eren yells.

"Eren, Mikasa, Katrina, Aya...we'll see you soon..." Just then, Carla is grabbed by the titan as she is about to get eaten.

"Stop!" Eren yells in horror, as the last thing he and Katrina see is the fact that their mother is inside of the titan's mouth.

Once they get away from the titan, Eren punches Hannes with tears, "I would've saved Mom in another few seconds! If you hadn't been there!"

"Yeah! Mom is gone!" Katrina says, also with anger.

Hannes says, "You couldn't save your mom, because you weren't strong enough. I didn't face the titan, because I wasn't brave enough! I'm sorry..."

Hannes also cries with tears, this causes Eren and Katrina to stop. Aya is also sad, as she embraces Eren, while Mikasa can only hold her head with tears. However, What they don't know is that Carla is still alive. She manages to break open the mouth of the blonde giant and glows.

And this is the first chapter of my first Attack on Titan fanfiction. As you can see, I am going to add 4 OC Characters to the story as I have something planned for it. The pairing of this story will be Eren and Aya, my OC. And Eren will be mature and stronger than the anime as I have something planned for him.
