Chapter 5
Sammy's mouth gaped open and she almost turned around and left. But she'd signed that stupid sheet so instead she stalked into the Drama classroom and directly up to her boyfriend who had a script in his hand.
"Something you forgot to mention?" She asked his back.
To his credit, Jon did not jump out of his skin entirely. But he did turn around very very slowly, starting with his head going over his shoulder to give her a wary yet innocent look. "Shouldn't I be asking you that?" He pointed out while trying to come across as the injured party.
"Lynn and Lori bullied me." She said defensively.
Jon chuckled. Honestly, he believed that. Janet had bullied Sam the entire time they had been friends. Not in an unkind way. More of a 'get off your ass and stop being such a chicken shit' kind of way.
"It's not funny." She said defensively and crossed her arms over what little chest she had.
Jon's grin widened. "It's a little funny."
"Okay, fine, it's a little funny." She grumbled with a scowl.
Jon chuckled. "Just tell me you are trying for the lead because if they pick Karen and I have to kiss her I'm going to throw up in my mouth." He said to her while making a comical grossed out face.
Sammy giggled. "Oh, like I'd give you the satisfaction of anyone else. Besides I'm not kissing any Nazis."
"I'd stay away from cops too. Just to be safe." He suggested.
Sammy couldn't help it. She started laughing. "No more cops. Ever." She agreed.
"Miss Carter, Mr. O'Neill, I'm glad you two are getting along so well. That being the case I'll have you read together." Miss Nora said to them.
Sammy and Jon looked at each other wide eyed for a moment then broke out in mutual grins. "Yes ma'am!" they said in unison.
She walked away shaking her head wondering what can of worms she'd opened.
"Okay, Carter, just… be yourself. Don't even bother tying to act. You're a perfect Maria already."
Sammy blushed. Few women held a candle to Julie Andrews in her opinion and Jon knew that.
"Now then, as you all know there are two versions of the play. One that was on Broadway and the other that is the movie. Oh, all right technically three, there was also a book. Lynn stop raising your hand." Mrs. Nora admonished her student who gave her a cheeky grin. "We'll be doing a combination of the former two and I've had scripts made to reflect that."
"Sorry I'm late!" Heather said as she rushed in.
Mrs. Nora gave her a dour look and motioned her to sit down with everyone else. She opted to sit with Sammy, Jon and Lynn who was behind them. "Sorry." She stage whispered to them.
"As I was saying I have altered the script so it reflects the best parts of both productions. I think it's very important we flesh out why Maria and the Captain fall in love with one another no matter how pragmatic he was about it in the book, Lynn." She said giving the dark haired girl a pointed look.
Sammy choked on a giggle. She was starting to think Lynn was doing it on purpose. Jon nudged her foot and gave her a stern look which didn't help things.
"Heather, since you were late, you will audition for Maria and the Baroness with Jon. Same with you, Sammy."
"But I wasn't late." Sammy grumbled. Mrs. Nora raised an eyebrow and Sammy hunched her shoulders in apology.
"Let's get the secondary parts underway. Clare, please stand in front with Kenny and Darcie. The three of you will be auditioning for servants parts. Don't leave if I don't assign you a part right away. Most of you will audition for more than one part." She told them.
In small groups various, kids read for the parts in the play. Tomorrow after the leads were chosen, the local grade school would bus in students that wanted to audition for the roles of the Von Trapp kids. Gracie was technically in preschool at the grade school so she was allowed to audition if she wanted to. If Sammy or Jon got a part, she'd definitely want to try out.
Two hours after they got there, Mrs. Nora started auditioning students for the lead parts of the two oldest kids, Rolf, Franz, Maxine, and the three lead characters. Jon read for all three male roles with various girls to see how they interacted. Mrs. Nora took notes the entire time, nodding or shaking her head thoughtfully as she did so.
"All right, read for Georg with Maria after she returns from the abbey." Mrs. Nora told Jon and Sammy.
Sammy stood holding her hands together in front of her, her head bowed.
"Why… did you come back?" he asked her from the chair next to her.
"Well… I had an obligation…" She sighed. "I came back to fulfill it." She told him without looking at him.
"Is that all?" He asked, his tone slightly sad.
"I… I missed the children." She stammered.
"Only the children?"
"No." She gave him a panicked look. "Yes!" She amended quickly. "Shouldn't I have missed them?"
"Well, yes. Of course you should have." He agreed a bit quickly. "I was only hoping that possibly you… ah…" He looked away in consternation.
She turned to him and looked at him hopefully. "Yes?"
"Well… you see... I'd hoped you had missed… Nothing was the same after you left." He said, waving his hand in frustration. "It will be all wrong again if you go. I just hoped perhaps you might… ah… have also missed… me?" He said hopefully as he stood to face her.
She turned away. "I'm sure the baroness will make everything fine for you after I go." She said, not looking at him.
"There isn't going to be any baroness." He said to her as he took her hand.
"All right. That's a good stopping point. You two adlibbed quite a bit of that. Study your lines better but it also means you won't stumble around on stage if you forget them." Mrs. Nora said, smiling. "Heather, you read beautifully but you're honestly too pretty to be Maria so you'll be the Baroness. Jon, Sammy, you're the other two leads. I want all three of you and Mason to come back tomorrow night so we can audition with the grade schoolers for the rest of the parts. Thank you everyone for coming tonight. I'll post the results tomorrow morning."
Sammy and Jon grinned at each other.
"Dorks. I knew you two would be shoo ins." Heather said laughing.
"They cheated." Lynn said with a grin. "They just acted like their normal idiot selves."
"Hey!" Sammy said, laughing,
"They aren't wrong, Carter." Jon grumbled.
"It's still rude." Sammy said with a wide grin.
