Chapter Two

Perseus Jackson, also known as Percy, was born a 5 in the caste system that made up Illéa's social system. There are eight castes, the first one is the royal family, then two, three, and four are practically royalty, then you have fives who are performers, and sixes and sevens who are basically slaves, and then you have the eights; the homless, social rejects, literally. Percy was a performer. He specialized in pottery, and making things like bowls and vases for the higher castes and whoever else would pay him for it. And while he enjoyed what he did, he also enjoyed playing football in his free time. He enjoyed it because he was able to be outside, it gave him a reason to have a good schedule, a reason to exercise, and it helped with his ADHD. He was in his room working on a new pot when he heard a knock at the door. "I'll get it Mom!" Percy shouted, walking to the door. "Hello?" He opened it to find one of the mailmen from the palace. "Hello, is there anything I can do for you today sir?" He asked politely.

"Hello sir. Am I correct to believe that you are between the ages of 18 and 20?" The mailman asked.

"Yes…" Percy slowly replied.

"Then I believe this is for you." The mailman said while handing Percy an envelope.

"Thank you? Wait. I'm a guy! I can't sign up for the selection." Percy responded confused

"Their royal highnesses would like to find a male companion for their son to hang out with and so they are sending out forms to everyone within the required age range" The mailman replied.

"Ok… I guess that makes sense… thank you sir have a good day" Percy said, closing the door as the mailman left, walking to the next house.

" Who was that dear?" Percy's mother, Sally Jackson, asked, walking into the front room.

"One of the mailmen from the palace. The King and Queen want to find a friend for the prince and so they're giving selection forms to everyone within the required age range." Percy said, opening the envelope.

"That's exciting dear! Are you going to sign up?" His mother asked.

"I dunno mom.. I mean, I already have a bunch of friends plus football." He told her.

"But it would be good for you to meet someone new, and a wonderful experience getting to live in the palace!" His mother said, trying to convince him to sign up.

"Yeah but Mom there's a good chance that even if I did sign up I probably won't even get in! Besides, the prince is probably a spoiled, snobby little shit-head." Percy replied, annoyed.

"Percy! You know better than to speak like that! Especially about the prince!" His mother scolded him.

Percy winced slightly. "Sorry mom. But you know it's probably true. Okay okay! I'm sorry!" Percy said as his mother glared at him. "I'm still not sure about this though…."

"Come on Percy, at least sign up. If you don't get in, you don't get in and we continue like it never happened okay?" His mom asked.

"Okayy I guess I'll sign up" Percy sighed, giving his mother a small smile. He then walks into his room and upon finding a pen proceeds to start filling out the form. After a few minutes he finishes and puts it in the new envelope that came with the form. He then walks into the kitchen and says, "Hey mom I'm about to go drop off the form wanna go with?" Percy asked.

"Sure why not, I don't have anything to do today. " Sally said, smiling. "Just let me get my shoes and purse then we can go." She said, walking into her room. She came out a few moments later carrying her purse. "Ok hun let's go. We should try to get there before too many people get there. " She said, chuckling. Once they get there, they see that everyone else was trying to do the same thing as them which resulted in it being quite crowded, and with it being open to not only girls but also guys, it was way more crowded. "Well" Sally laughed. "It was worth a try."

"Yeah. Now we get to wait in line for hours upon hours." Percy whined, trying and failing to hide a smile. "I wonder if Leo and Zade decided to sign up." Percy said, looking around.

"PERCYYY!" Leo shouted, jumping onto Percy's back. "You're signing up too?"

"Yeah. Mom said it would be a good way to meet new people and experience new things." He told his friend while rolling his eyes.

"Dude! Our mom's said the same thing!" Zade told him.

"Who knows, maybe they all decided to gang up on us and use their parent-y ways to make us join or something" Leo chuckled.

"Dude what the hell are you talking about?" Percy said, laughing a little.

"I honestly have no idea" Leo responded with a shrug.

Percy rolled his eyes. "Oh hey it's our turn! Who wants to go first?"

"I guess I'll go first and get it done with." Zade volunteered, shrugging. He walks in and then comes back out a few minutes later. "Just so ya know they have to take a picture for some reason." He told them with a smirk.

"Dude why did you have to say that so loud?" Leo and Percy started whining as their moms started fussing over them.

"Mom. Mo-om. Mom! It's my turn! I have to go now, ok?" Percy told his mom while pulling away.

"Okay okay just let me….. There. Okay go on ahead. " Sally said, trying to fix his hair. Percy rolled his eyes and smiled before walking in.

"Done!" He said, walking out a few minutes later. He turned to Leo and smiled, "Your turn dude." Leo walked in and walked out a few minutes later smiling.

"Done! Do any of yall want to go do something?" Leo asked.

"Sure!" Zade told him. He turned to Percy, "Percy you in?"

"I wish I could, but I have an order I have to finish up, sorry. Maybe next weekend?" he asked.

"Sure! See ya later then, bye!" Leo said walking away.

"Well, all we can do now is wait!" Sally said, smiling gently as her and Percy started to walk home.
