The zombie was waking up. He looked down at the wounds on his shoulder where Leah bit him. "Fuck" he breathed softly. I felt him start to panic. He flew towards the door. (This little sucker was agile!) Emmet blocked him before he could get out. He stared into Emmet's eyes.
"Where is Klaus?" the zombie. "Take me to him." His posture was confident, but I could feel it: he was desperate.
Emmet laughed. "Uh uh. Your magic-eye voodoo isn't going to work this time."
Bella had us all shielded, thank heavens. Emmet shoved the zombie back into the center of the room. The zombie registered Emmet's supernatural strength with shock. His eyes darted around the room, looking for another exit.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck!" His panic rose and he clutched his wounded arm. He was surrounded on all sides by Jacob, Carlisle, Esme, Rosalie, Emmet, Edward, Bella, Alice, and me. He turned his gaze on each of us. When he looked at me, I sensed a strange magnetic pull towards his eyes. With the help of Bella's shield though, it wasn't hard to pull away.
Carlisle stepped forward: always the diplomat. Each of his smooth gestures painted a picture of serentiy, but internally he was a storm of anxiety.
"We mean you no harm," he said, "that is, unless you mean us harm. My name is Carlise Cullen and this is my family. Can you tell us who you are?"
"...and what you wanted with Collin" Jacob added, his arms crossed and his eyes boring into the zombie. Unlike some members of my family, Jacob was not in the peacemaking mood.
The zombie wasn't calmed one bit. His muscles twitched as if to run out of the circle between Alice and Bella. They were the smallest members of the family. He must have judged them the weakest. Alice shifted into his path before he could take a full step.
"Don't try it," she warned. God, that woman was sexy when she was in intimidation-mode.
He hesitated for a moment and then barreled ahead. Alice ducked elegantly before he'd even finished raising his fist to swing it at her head. It whiffed through the air, and he spun around, off-kilter.
Bella gave his backside a short, sharp kick, and he stumbled back into the center of the circle. The zombie sensed he couldn't punch his way out of his situation. He'd need to try a different strategy. He turned to Carlisle, the most sympathetic face in the circle.
"Please. You have to let me leave," he begged. "Or I'll be dead in 24 hours. This werewolf bite…"
"You want another one?" Jacob threatened.
"You? You're the…" the Zombie sputtered. But how…?"
"How did you phase without a full moon? That's what he wants to know," Edward continued, reading his thoughts.
Jacob rolled his eyes. "Maybe we'll fill you in on all the werewolf lore later. For now though, we're the ones asking the questions. What are you, and why did you come here?"
"I'm… I'm a…" he struggled to get the words out.
"This doesn't make any sense." Edward was confused. The others turned to him. "He thinks he's a vampire."
"A vampire?" laughed Rosalie, "With this squishy little body?" She shoved the zombie, and the zombie stumbled.
Edward's eyes were fixed on Stefan Salvatore. He was dead serious. "You drink blood. You're immortal…"
Stefan Salvatore was terrified. "What is this? What are you doing?"
"...sort of." Edward's fear lifted somewhat. "He's telling the truth. A werewolf's bite will kill him."
"Unless I can get to Klaus", Stefan Salvatore turned to Carlisle. "Please. I'll tell you anything you want to know. But you can't get any information from me if I'm dead."
An uncomfortable silence. This was real desperation. I didn't sense any trickery. Edward must not have seen any in his mind because he trusted the zombie too. Whatever Stefan Salvatore's purpose in coming here was, he seemed willing to give up easily.
"Who is Klaus?" Carlisle asked patiently.
"He's my friend. I came here with him." That must have been the other zombie
"He's like you?"
"Yes… sort-of" A pause. We waited for him to elaborate.
"He's a hybrid. A vampire who doesn't burn in the sun, a werewolf who doesn't need the full moon to change."
We all looked at eachother, confused. Then I could feel the realization dawn on us all at once. I figured I might as well be the one to say it: "Either you've been drinking some crazy juice, Mr. Stefan Salvatore or you've been hypnotized too."
Emmet nudged Bella. "You gotta do your anti-hypnotism thingie."
Bella hesitated. "If I take him under the shield with us, that leaves no barrier between him and us. He might be able to hypnotize us again.
There was a short silence. "We could just poke his eyes out", Rosalie suggested.
"No, Rosalie" Esme scolded.
"Why not? He can't hypnotize without his eyes, can he?"
"Yea, that makes sense" Jacob nodded.
Stefan Salvatore was terrified.
"There will be no poking out of anyone's eyes" Carlisle put his foot down.
"So what are we supposed to do, just close our eyes and hold on to him so he doesn't escape?" Rosalie challenged.
Now a longer pause while we each tried to formulate a less silly plan. My siblings looked at me. I did have the most experience with this sort of thing.
I weighed our options and then shrugged. "Yea, that should work." Rosalie rolled her eyes in disgust.
I addressed Stefan Salvatore. "You face the wall. Don't try to turn around or we'll see it coming." The zombie considered his options and then slowly turned towards the wall.
We surrounded him. The strange ticking of his irregular heartbeat became a roar as we drew nearer. I grabbed the zombie from behind first, holding his arms down. The others followed. "One big happy family" Jacob snarked as we finished building our group-hug.
"Okay", Bella announced. I'm extending the shield over him in three… two… one…
I felt the shock wave reverberate through the zombie. He gasped. "I remember!"
