"Here."

Eddie started. He'd been so lost in thought he hadn't heard the window open again, or Rosie setting the plate of cookies down on the fire escape. Twisting, legs swinging in the breeze, he took the mugs of cocoa out of her hands while she crawled out, shutting it quickly before Molly could even think about jumping after her. The puppy just stared out worriedly at them from the bed, blankets piled messily around her after a very busy first day in their new home.

Rosie zipped her coat up a little further and sat the same as him, arms resting on the lower rail of the escape, feet dangling into the abyss. It had taken a good amount of convincing to get him out here, but the view was worth it. There was a little park next to their building, lit up now with amber lights. Across the way, a much taller block of apartments overlooked them. To either side they could peer out onto two different streets, one busier than the other. The traffic noise would take some getting used to.

But this...he grinned stupidly as Rosie blew on her drink, catching her wince at the first sip.

"It's hot, Babe."

"Mm-hmm." She chewed her scorched lips.

Eddie watched her dip one of the cookies in and hold it up, waiting for it to be cool enough to eat. Was he still grinning? Rosie frowned at him.

"Why don't you just wait a little bit?"

"Why don't you mind your business?"

"Crank."

She nibbled carefully. "What you thinking about?"

"Huh? Oh..." He stared back down into the trees. "I was actually just wondering what Wayne's doing right now."

An empathetic pout. "You can call him again, if you -"

"No. I'm fine. I just miss him a little bit."

"That's normal." Rosie nodded. "I miss Mom and Dad all the time. Everyone, really."

"I guess I just didn't expect it."

"Well, you've never moved out before." She kicked him. Gently. "You'll get used to it. And we'll see them. They'll come here and we'll go to them."

"Yeah. I know."

"It helps to find people here, too."

Rosie reached up, hand resting at the back of his neck, fingers playing with the loose hairs there. Made his spine tingle. Eddie snaked an arm around her, finally trying the cocoa now that it wasn't molten. Somehow, the warmth in his stomach helped the ache dissipate.

"It helps as well.." He mused. "That home is here, now."

"Is it a good one?"

"Best one I've had."
