Bella was aware that Jasper got "sick" sometimes. He had told her himself.

But she never expected it would be so bad that he would end up ripping Emmett's arm off after this one tried to keep him from attacking a campsite.

The campsite survived since Emmett never let go of him even when had nothing but one arm to hold him with.

Alice had said that Bella should return home.

That right before Jasper stormed in and slammed the door upstairs.

And then Emmett had appeared missing an arm.

Bella had almost screeched in horror at the sight of it before remembering that he wasn't human.

-Are you an idiot? How many times has Alice told you to not grab him when he is like that? Do you have a death wish?- Even if Rosalie sounded exasperated Bella could see the clear distress in her face while Carlisle mended Emmett's arm.

Alice had disappeared upstairs not short after Jasper's return.

-Edward, you should take Bella home.- Carlisle told throwing his son a look. Right now wasn't the best of times to have a human at home. It wasn't a secret how explosive and aggressive Jasper had grown during these past years when he was in one of those... episodes .

Now no one but Alice could go near him when he was like that without risking losing a limb.

-But-

-Bella, it pains me to say this, but right now that's not Jasper nor even his alter, it's just his bloodlust talking, and regardless of how he may feel towards you right now you are in danger. He could come looking for you at any moment and if that happens not even all of us together would be able to stop him from killing you. And if that happens...

Carlisle didn't want to think about how that could destroy his family.

Bella wanted to protest but she also understood Carlisle's point. She was human. Right now rather than help she would do nothing but hurt her brother even more. And she didn't want to hurt him nor them.

So she let Edward take her home.

~~~~~~~
Jasper was in hell.
He was gasping for air in a vain attempt to cool his throat down. But it wasn't working . Venom was dripping from his mouth and onto the floor as he fought and fought to cool himself down through panting. As if he was some kind of dog . His throat held such a crushing pressure it was killing him. He couldn't talk. Couldn't make a sound for it all felt too agonizing to do so.
And with pain anger came. It fed and fed until he was seeing red and not even the hand rubbing soft circles around his back was helping. In fact. It was irritating him. Rage was blazing and in a surge of absolute wrath he took a swing at the ground. Ripping the carpet as he did so and letting out a guttural growl when the hand came to rest on the back of his head.
She was there. She . Couldn't remember her name but she was there. There . She smelt like flowers and venom and more flowers. He wanted blood . Needed it. Because it was killing him.
But that giant brute had the nerve to keep him from reaching the blood. The one thing that would sooth this hell. He was blazing from the inside out and he wanted the world to burn down with him. Burn. Boil. Melt. Die . He felt his bones crack in reflex as he tried to shift. But it didn't work.
He crawled off the bed and snapped at the hand that grabbed his arm. Hissing and taking a swing. But she dodged. And that filled him with even more rage. It burnt and burnt until he was seeing red. He pounced.
But she jumped back and he snarled. How dare she? Lunging at her and throwing a punch that connected with a wall that shattered under the force of the impact. He whirled around. Panting and feeling a buzz at the back of his head. The more he moved the more he could feel the air leaving him. Vision zooming out.
She stepped forward and words were spoken but he couldn't catch them. It was like being stuck underwater with a video put on slow motion. The world was blurred. Muddled. Slow. He took a step forward but dropped on his knees.
And then the world went black.
~~~~~~~~~~

It was general knowledge that Jasper could also broadcast his own emotions. Yes. But for the most part when it happened it tended to be either an overwhelming sense of love and adoration that could knock anyone off their feets or such crushing fear it could get even Rosalie cowering in a corner.

And that hatred from that one time that got them fighting each other in a blinding sea of burning emotions.

But not even that could compare to the sudden wave of red and black that slammed into them with the force of a nuclear explosion. It rattled them with the force of an earthquake and submerged them into a crushing state of unadulterated wrath and bloodlust that seized their minds and for a moment that's all their instincts felt. The waves that hit them like a tsunami over and over again.

It strangled them until not even breathing could aid them on escaping such sense of thirst. Blazing. Melting. Boiling. It was maddening. Unforgiving.

And the pain . It was agonizing. It was worse than a rod on fire being shoved down one's throat. This was straight up the sun itself shoved down their throats with a blanket made out of steel wrapped up in molten lava and God what the Hell?

It grew and grew and grew and grew to the point where Emmett who had been standing dropped on his knees and grabbed his throat. His vision flashing at the edges as it zoomed out. Venom dripping from his mouth.

And then it disappeared.

The weight lifted like a whiplash that ended up ripping a sound from the back of a few throats.

It took them all a while to even recover their hearing.

-What the hell?- Rosalie's voice was strained and she was rubbing at her throat. Her gaze wide in shock if not a bit confused.

Carlisle couldn't blame her. He never expected that Jasper's gift could be so... that . He had known it was strong and that it could be stronger than expected if he were to focus on training it.

But Carlisle never expected it could be that strong at this point. He was the oldest vampire here right after him so it shouldn't surprise him that he could have such range over his gift but still...

And was this how he felt? How- How? He had known it hurt him to not feed and that it could be quite the uncomfortable situation to feel nauseous and thirsty but being unable to do anything about it. But he never expected it to be this painful.

Jasper was agonizing. If this was the kind of pain he had to go through... How long until he decided enough was enough and snapped? How long until the pain became too much for him to handle? Now he understood the mood swings and how aggressive he had grown when he was sick.

If he felt like this it was no wonder he would want to lash out at whoever came close to him. He was in pain and uncomfortable and wanted nothing more but to be left alone.

Carlisle was quick to go upstairs. Knocking on the door for the sole reason that for his influence to have died like that he must have fainted. Alice opened the door.

He caught sight of Jasper laying on the bed, part of the carpet had been torn off and there was a broken lamp, one of the walls sporting a hole in it.

-Are you okay?- He asked turning to look at Alice who was looking at Jasper with that guilt and sadness that never failed to appear whenever he was like this.

Almost as if she was blaming herself for something.

-I'm fine.

Carlisle nodded and squeezed her arm in comfort before approaching the bed. He sat down at the edge of it and pressed the back of his hand against his cheek. He felt warm and his breathing was too ragged for comfort. Were he human it would be concerning for the sole fact that he breathed as if he wasn't getting enough air.

But vampires didn't need to breathe. It was nothing but a reflex those who spent a lot of time around humans developed.

The pain and anger he had felt earlier... It was insane that someone could feel that and still walk around later as if nothing happened as Jasper always had the habit to do.

-Has it always been as bad as this?- He asked glancing at Alice who was hovering at the doorway.

-No, it's gotten worse...- Alice told staring at the unconscious form of her husband. Not for the first time she wondered if bringing him into this diet had been the best idea.

The more years went by, the more she got to see these episodes grow worse and worse the more she wonders if maybe, just maybe, black bloods weren't meant for this diet.

Carlisle turned back to look at Jasper. Even unconcious he still looked pained and uncomfortable and it broke his heart to see his son suffering when he knew what could help him.

He sighed.

-Alice, can you bring me some blood?

She didn't need to be told twice before disappearing.

He stared at Jasper for a moment. Sometimes it was so hard to believe that this was normal and at this point Carlisle had started doubting this to be normal at all. For what he heard from the Denali Laurent hadn't had troubles at all with the animal blood. Yeah. He did said it tasted horrible but other than that...

Not for the first a thought occurred to him and taking advantage of Alice's absence and Jasper being unconcious he grabbed the hem of his shirt and pulled it up.

But no black co-webs met him.

Of course not.

He sighed as he pulled the shirt back down. He knew it was him being paranoid but sometimes he couldn't help but compare Jasper to a black blood. There was something about him that just reminded him of their predatory air, the way he would avoid the sun, his reaction to animal blood, his poor control despite the fact that it has been more than 20 years now, that violent outburst he had at school years ago, Alice had said that it had been due his gift getting overloaded but even to this day Carlisle had troubles believing it.

And that scratch he gave to Bella...

And while the behaviour could be linked to having spent decades around such a violent black blood there was something about it that didn't quite make sense. Like a missing puzzle that was right infront of his face but he couldn't quite grasp.

A pained moan pulled him out of his thoughts at the same time Alice returned.

-Can you leave me alone with him?- He requested when she handed him the bag of blood. Alice seemed ready to protest but he cut her off.- Please?

She seemed hesitant but still did as told.

-And close the door.

Once the door was closed he returned his attention back to Jasper who was starting to wake up. He flinched when he caught sight of Carlisle.

-Jasper, I would like to ask you something, it's very important and I need you to tell me the truth so I can help you.- Carlisle's words were gentle but absolute.

Jasper felt himself tense at them and a surge of nausea took hold of him.

-Sir?

-Did The Major infect you?

Jasper froze at that before catching himself. He was still too disoriented to come up with an excuse or some kind of made up lie. He wasn't even strong enough to use his compulsion on him effectively.

Then he caught sight of the bag of blood.

His mind went blank at that and his body moved out of sheer instinct. Springing up and snatching the bag from the other vampire. It was his his his his. And he didn't even hesitate to sink his fangs into it. Sucking up the glorious liquid that went down his throat like a cold river that killed the wildfires blazing his existence itself.

But then it was gone and he needed more. More moremoremore. He tore the bag with his teeth in search for more but there wasn't more and his throat was still hurting. Hurting. Footsteps. Footsteps. He rippled the air with a warning whiplash as he turned to look over his shoulder at the vampire. A guttural growl stuck at the back of his throat.

He had no right to come closer. This was his his his. Who did he thought he was? He was no one. Nothing. He would teach him who was the one in charge. Who was the one who got to feed first and more.

But just as he got up and pounced the world went black.

~~~~~~~~~~
Carlisle hadn't been ready to have Jasper jumping him and snatching the bag of blood from him.
There was something about seeing him there crouched on the floor giving him his back while ripping an emptied bag of blood to pieces that gave the whole situation a dangerous air. Like dealing with a domesticated predator who still wielded the wildness inside. Of all of them Jasper has always been the most... vampiric one. But even this was too much.
And when he tried to stop him the look he was given... There was no recognition at all. There was nothing but sheer hunger in that crimson glare. Something pierced the air making his hairs stand on end and a shiver run down his spine. A near animalistic growl being sent his way.
Then Jasper lunged.
But the attack never came as the red became a bloodied pool in the void. He took a few steps back and held his gaze for a moment before looking down at his bloodied hands.
And of course he brought them up to lick.
That felt like a de javu for Carlisle.
He turned around ready to leave but Carlisle found the words leaving him before he could stop them.
-You are not going anywhere.
-Jus' 'cause ah lac this coven doesn't mean 'm gonna become the coven leader's dog. Dun't git confused.- Came the warning as he glanced at Carlisle over his shoulder.
-No one here is a dog. Stop being difficult and sit down.- Carlisle was quite proud at how well he did at keeping his tone neutral. The alter glared at him before dropping his now clean hands and turning around to face him. The blood staining his face giving him an even more eerie air. His stance dangerous and threatening.
-Let's make somethin' clear. Ah hate ya, ah dun't trust ya an' ya certainly dun't own meh. Ya cain't order meh 'round.
-If you hate me why did you stop Jasper?- Carlisle decided to just do it. He had let it sit long enough. Don't acknowledge the alter. No matter what he does as long as it doesn't hurt his family don't acknowledge him. It was the safest way.
But enough was enough.
It was time to acknowledge this particular member of his family that he knew nothing of.
Still.
Silence was his answer.
-Well?
-Jus' 'cause ah dun't lac ya doesn't mean I'll let anythin' bad happen ta ya or the rest of the coven... Y'all make him an' the angel happy. S' mah job ta keep it that way no matter what.
-Why is it that you don't like me if I may know? Have I done anything to upset you?
The alter glared at him with such force Carlisle almost kneeled on reflex whatreflex ?
-'cause yer weak.- He told without missing a beat. He looked almost resentful. Voice harsh.
-Weak?- Of all things expected that wasn't the one Carlisle had seen coming. Weak? How was he weak?
-Yes. You're too nice an' soft. Someone so nice has no right ta exist let alone lead a coven. Being nice leads ta weakness an' weakness leads ta the death of the entire coven. You're more stupid an' dangerous than ya realize. You're meant ta protec' yer coven an' still, ya allow threats ta escape over an' over again. Yer punishments' methods revolt meh an' so does the fact there's no order whatsoever in this place.
Each word he spoke it without breaking eye contact, there was no fear in his eyes nor even a challenge. He was just telling him what he deemed to be the absolute truth, and in a sense, Carlisle could understand why he would deem it the truth considering who turned and raised him.
A vampire from the South who was first of all a soldier. Of course he would be used to order and absolute obedience. Still .
-I understand that that's how you view it, but this is not a coven nor is it meant to be run as such, this is a family where everyone can speak freely and do whatever they please as long as they don't hurt anyone, I'm not their boss nor their leader. I'm not being too nice or too soft . I'm just treating them with the respect they deserve. My punishments are fair. And I don't condone violence, everyone has the right to live.
The alter scoffed and glared at him.
-Have ya killed Laurent when ya had the chance he wouldn't have tried ta kill Bella. Have ya killed Victoria when ya had her infront of ya, ya wouldn't had been forced ta fight against an army of newborns. You're so blinded by doing what's right that ya dun't care 'bout the consequences of yer actions as long as no one dies. So do please tell meh, how'd'ya expect meh ta trust ya? The only reason ah yield ta ya is 'cause I've no desires ta be anyone's boss, not 'cause ah trust yer judgement. Ya didn't even knew how ta fight!
Ah.
Now Carlisle could see where he was going. The look he was giving him.
He felt like he couldn't rely on him and therefore anger is what he responded with, he was anxious, scared, confused. All because the person who was meant to protect him didn't seem to meet what he was used to.
-Just because I choose to not fight doesn't mean I'm weak. I may have not known how to fight a newborn but I can certainly restrain one the same as I can calm them down. I spent time in Volterra, means I also learnt to restrain black bloods and how to use their strength against them. I can stand my ground against the common vampire and I have certainly killed in the past to protect those I care about. Being a pacifist doesn't mean being weak.
The Major felt himself halt at those words.
Restrain a black blood.
Volterra.
Now it made sense Aro's odd obsession over this coven. The Volturi letting one of their members go sounded like the kind of thing that wouldn't be quite truth. Let them feel free but spy on them at any given chance.
Still .
How could he restrain a black blood? Did that meant he met one before? More than one?
If he could restrain one... no . No one could restrain them. The Major would never allow such a thing. No one could overpower him. He was stronger and merciless and brutal.
But he would humor him.
Thus he pounced.
He wouldn't use his black blood's abilities nor his skills. No one could fight like him but the angel. But he wanted to see how far the coven leader was willing to go to protect himself from one of his so called children.
And he had to admit that it shocked him to end up on the ground. Arms behind his back and legs restrained under the coven leader's knees. His grip was tight around his wrists but there was absolute calm in his emotions. Too much calm. It unnerved him. It was worse than the rage from Miss.
Because someone who could wield such calm while fighting was dangerous. More dangerous than The Major himself.
He could restrain a black blood and use their strength against them. That... not even Miss could restrain them. She controlled Jasper through fear and The Major... He wasn't quite sure what had controlled him. It hadn't been fear.
This coven leader didn't induce fear and he still had such control over the coven. Such calm while fighting.
It made his throat close and for the first time in his life he relaxed his shoulders and kept his head down. Unclenching his fists and fighting back the urge to close his eyes.
-I need to ask you something and I need you to tell me the truth, it's very important.
-Yes, sir.
-Did The Major infect you with his blood?
-No sir. He didn't. Ya can see for yerself that we've no black co-webs .- The Major told smoothly, letting his compulsion grow in his voice. He tried to not let it bother him when the coven leader lifted his shirt.
But of course he didn't see them.
Not when his vision was blurred by his compulsion.
The coven leader released him and he was quick to get up.
-Why'd'ya think we were infected? We ain't weak against light an' we certainly dun't burn under the sun.- He questioned putting up his best confused tone and sending feelings of shame and guilt the coven leader's way.
-Forget it, it's just me being paranoid.
But even if Carlisle said that. Even if he felt guilt and shame over accusing his son of hiding something so important...
He couldn't help but have a bad feeling. His gut was telling him that something bad was coming.
Something that could change their lives forever.
