Chapter 22—The Fall Out From A Mistake

October 17th, 1999

5:30pm

Bella's POV

Adam, Gunnar, Charlie, Ollie, and I were at home having dinner with Mom, Dad, Grandma and Hans. Ollie had brought a girl with him to dinner and introduced her to us as his girlfriend, Annie from Virginia, Mn. Annie was majoring in English. While Ollie was going for a psychiatry degree. Grandma was happy about the prospect of Annie could one day be joining our family.

"So, Bella how is school going?" Grandma asked.

"Fine, it's been a rough couple of days," I said. Pushing the food around my plate.

"Oh, how so?" Grandma asked.

"She had a nice pregnancy scare," Adam said.

I looked at Adam incredulously before I yelled, "ADAM!"

"Excuse me?" Dad asked.

I said nothing.

"Is this what the meeting in Coach Orion's office was about on Friday?" Dad asked.

"Isabella Lillian Banks-Bombay, YOU ANSWER YOUR FATHER NOW," Mom yelled.

"Yes, but I took a pregnancy test, and it was negative," I said.

"Bella we will discuss this later," Dad said.

An hour and a half later

I and Charlie were sitting on the couch together holding hands. "I can't believe this Bella. How could you be so irresponsible?" Dad asked.

"I'm sorry Daddy, I'm sorry," I said with tears rolling down my cheeks.

"What am I going to do with you?" Dad asked.

"I don't know," I said.

"Can we have leniency; I mean the test was negative?" Charlie asked.

"NO, you're lucky you are not thrown out on your ear. Does your mother know about this?" Dad asked.

"No," Charlie whispered softly.

"Bella what happened?" Mom asked.

"I don't know, everything was going along just fine and when we celebrated our engagement, we got drunk and had sex in a hotel room," I said.

"Bella, don't you know how dangerous that is? Your underage," Dad said.

"I know that," I said.

"I thought you spent the night with Connie?" Mom asked.

"That was the plan, until Charlie proposed," I said.

"So let me get this straight; you lied about where you were that night that you and Charlie went to dinner. Then you shacked up with him at some hotel room, got drunk while you were both underage and had sex. Then you lied to me and Coach Orion about you having the flu?" Dad asked.

"Yes," I said.

"Bella I am going to make an appointment with Dr. White my OB/GYN, we need to find out what is wrong with you, tomorrow," Mom said.

"You're grounded, Bella," Dad said.

"How are you going to do that with me living in the dorms?" I asked.

"Yeah, well you will not live in the dorms for the next three weeks. You will ride with your mother to school and ride with me after practice. You are going to be benched for the JV/Varsity Showdown," Dad said.

"But you can't do that, this is my senior year. My last year to play in the showdown," I said.

"YES, I CAN! KEEP TESTING ME AND IT WILL BE AN ADDITIONAL TWO WEEKS AND YOU CAN KISS THE BLAKE AND BRECK GAMES GOODBYE TOO," Dad yelled.

"No, Wisconsin is coming for the Blake game," I said as tears started coming down my cheeks.

"NO TV, NO PHONE, NO CHARLIE, NO HANGING OUT WITH THE DUCKS. IF YOU DISOBEY, IT WILL BE AN EXTRA WEEK PER VIOLATION," Dad yelled.

"Yes daddy," I said with tears running down my cheeks.

"CHARLIE, GO BACK TO SCHOOL. BELLA GO TO YOUR ROOM!" Dad yelled.

Charlie's and my hands separated. I ran to my room, laid down on the bed and cried myself to sleep.

The next day during US Constitutional Law, Charlie passed a note to me:

Hi Angel,

So, I got grounded too. But for a week, meet me in the middle study room afterschool. I need your opinion.

Love you all the way to the moon and back.

Charlie

I ran to the library afterschool and quickly got into the middle study room with Charlie. I kissed him immediately upon getting in the door.

"I'm sorry Charlie," I said as I broke the kiss from him. I have wanted to put my lips on him all day today. I had to sit with the JV squad during lunch. Charlie and I were separated by a few rows in all of our classes together.

"It's okay, we are strong, we will get through this together," Charlie said grabbing my hand and holding it.

"I love you, Charlie," I said.

"I love you Angel," Charlie said.

We kissed again. Then Charlie said, "So I wanted to know your opinion."

"Uh huh," I said.

"I am thinking of looking for my birth father, I want to meet him," Charlie said.

"Wow, so you would need my help in looking for him?" I asked.

"Yes, I have no idea where to start," Charlie said.

"Do you have a name?" I asked. Charlie pulled a piece of paper from his backpack.

"No, all I have is a birth date, age at my birth and his birthplace. His name is blacked out from my birth certificate," Charlie said showing me his birth certificate.

"You would have to ask Connie," I said.

"Why Connie?" Charlie said.

"Because we had to have a birth certificate on file, before being enrolled here. If anyone has a clean copy. Dean Buckley, would," I said.

Charlie hesitated.

"Charlie what's wrong?" I asked.

"Nothing, but even if I do find out his name, where do I start looking?" Charlie asked.

"I don't know, but we could hire a private detective," I said.

"God that is going to be expensive," Charlie said.

"I will hock my ring," I said.

"No, I couldn't let you do that. I will figure it out," Charlie said.

We kissed for the third time, then Charlie spied someone walking toward the Duck table.

"SHIT, your mom," Charlie said.

"Sit down, pull out your Calculus book," I said.

I hovered over Charlie's shoulder and as the door was opening, I said; "See Charlie you need to work that backwards because it's the antiderivative."

"Oh, I see now. Thanks Bella," Charlie said.

"Bella what are you doing in here? Your father and I grounded you from seeing Charlie," Mom said.

"Uh it was my fault Ms. MacKay; I mean Mrs. Bombay. I just didn't get what Dr. Anderson was talking about earlier," Charlie said.

"Uh huh, and why didn't you go to Julie, surely she would have understood your question," Mom said.

"I saw Bella first," Charlie said.

"Bella?" Mom asked.

"Yeah, Julie was auditioning for a part in the musical," I said with my nose wrinkling up.

"Oh, I see," Mom said.

"You are not going to say anything to dad, are you?" I asked.

"No since you were helping Charlie out as a classmate. But you need to come with me to my classroom, so get your stuff and follow me," Mom said.

"Yes mom, bye Charlie," I said.

"Bye Angel, Thanks," Charlie said.

When Mom and I got to her classroom across the campus, Mom said; "You will be coming here every day after school until your grounding is over, you understand?"

"Yes Mom," I said.

"Good, you have an appointment with Dr. White at 4:30 pm tomorrow. I will meet you at the car after school, tomorrow so be ready. Then you will go home after that, no practice. You and I are going to talk," Mom said.

"Yes mom," I said.

4:55pm

I was sitting in Dr. White's office. I was on the examination table; mom was on a chair in the examination room. I had to have a pap smear done. I have to admit that was painful. Charlie goes in smoother then what Dr. White used. Mom hasn't said two words to me since Dr. White was finished with the pap.

"Are you mad at me?" I asked.

"No, just disappointed and worried about you, you should have a period every month," Mom said.

"I know, I am sorry," I said.

There was a knock on the door, "Come in," Mom said.

"Well, the test results came back, Bella you are not pregnant," Dr. White said.

"Thanks, I already knew that," I said.

"So, what happened?" Mom asked.

"Well, it's possible that Bella is going through what is called Amenorrhea. Although this is secondary Amenorrhea, we are waiting for the thyroid test to come back which will come back by Thursday. But we know that we can rule out Bella being overweight, Body fat is okay around 16 percent," Dr. White said.

"So, what do we do," Mom asked.

"Wait for the testing to finish coming back and I will have your results, Thursday afternoon. It's possible that Bella has an underactive thyroid. If that is the case, I want her to see an endocrinologist. If it comes out negative for the underactive thyroid, it's possible that the drug that planned parenthood has her on for birth control isn't right for Bella at all," Dr. White said.

I started crying, it was another thing that made me different from any other normal person.

Bella's POV

I was relieved when Dr. White called back yesterday and said that it was a problem with my medication. I had to discontinue the Birth Control that I was on, and we had to strip it from my body, which would take about 2 to 3 months. Charlie and I swore that was the last time that we were ever going to have sex together until we were at least adults. I decided to take it a step further and said until I was married. Charlie said that he was going to start to come to church with me. He wasn't sure about being a Christian, but he was willing to give it a shot. Charlie and Connie went to talk to Dean Buckley about his birth certificate. The Dean was interested to know if Charlie was going to find his Father. They ran into another roadblock. The exact same information that was missing on Casey's copy was also missing on the Dean's copy.

"Maybe you need to get a fresh birth certificate from the state," I told Charlie on the way to Calculus. Mom said that Dad's punishment was pretty strict and that she would allow me to have contact with Charlie inside the classroom, the halls and at lunch. She was trying to get my sentence reduced by a few days, at least enough to get me to play tonight against Duluth. The JV versus Varsity Game is Friday.

"Yeah, I suppose so, but how am I going to get that copy?" Charlie asked.

"You go to the vital statistics office and get a copy, it's as simple as that Charlie," I said.

"I wish that you can come with me," Charlie said.

"I will be with you in spirit," I said.

"I know, I love you Angel," Charlie said.

"I love you Charlie," I said.
