Chapter 15: 2017 - Gabumon and Piyomon Return
The sunlight illuminated Sora and Yamato's bedroom and he squinted before covering himself with the blankets. Beside him, she was sleeping peacefully. He couldn't see her face, but could see the way her chest went up and down in a soft pace. They had just had their fourteenth one together and have been married for a few months.
"Can you please close the curtains?" Sora asked as she covered herself with the blankets too.
"They are closed, baby."
"They are?" She pulled them out again and looked at the window. "I could have sworn they weren't."
"It's very bright, indeed." Yamato rolled over to look at her. "So… our first morning in 2017 as a married couple."
"That's right." She slid close to him and placed her arm over his body. "I don't think I'll ever get over how good it feels to wake up next to you everyday and get to call you my husband."
"It does feels good, Mrs. Takenouchi Ishida." He smiled and then leaned over to kiss her passionately.
"I love how we got around the Japanese tradition of people having only one last name. I don't think I could let go of Takenouchi. It's a huge part of my life and I want to carry it forever."
"I know, and I think that's great. I wouldn't feel comfortable about it if you did. And also, I love your last name."
"You do?"
"Yeah. I think it's a strong one, just like you."
"That's sweet, baby." She wrapped her arms around his neck. "Do we need to get up now?"
"Today is Sunday, so definitely not." Yamato touched the tip of her nose lightly.
"I thought so." Sora lifted her head to capture his lips in another kiss, to which he immediately and happily responded. By the time her head touched her pillow again, he already was on top of her.
"Baby, have you seen my T-shirt?" Yamato walked down the hall towards the kitchen a couple of hours later, wearing only his gray sweatpants.
"No, why? Do you miss it?"
"No, I just…" He stopped talking when he found out she was wearing it. "Nevermind, there it is."
"I hope you don't mind me borrowing it without telling you."
"Oh I don't mind it at all." He approached her and wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, kissing the back of her neck. "You can wear it as much as you want."
"Don't tempt me, I might as well do it."
"Be my guest. I just can't promise it won't go off as fast as it went on."
"Dirty talking?"
"Oh you know it." He slapped her butt lightly and then disappeared in the hall.
Sora leaned against the sink and drank some of her green tea as she smiled to herself. She couldn't help but think being married was such an amazing feeling, and she almost regretted not doing it sooner. She and Yamato had taken their own time to do it, despite feeling pressured from other people, especially the rest of the Chosen Children. Some of them were already married for years and would probably be having kids soon, but it was never a rush for them. She was more than glad they waited as well. She was torn about it, actually.
"How does it feel like to be married?"
"It feels great." He replied with a grin. "I'm glad we didn't give in for people's pressure to do it sooner. It's perfect for me the way everything went. And besides, I love waking up next to you everyday and realizing you're finally my wife. It's such an amazing feeling. What about you?"
"I love it too. Though we've been living under the same roof for a few years now, it's amazing to call you my husband. I think the timing was perfect for both of us. The only thing I would change was having Piyomon and Gabumon with us that day. Not only on that one, but you get me."
"Yeah, I do. They will be disappointed, Piyomon especially."
"That's for sure." Sora bit her lower lip, but a warm smile quickly appeared on her face. "But this can be a sign we should do another celebration soon."
"Another celebration?" Yamato raised his eyebrow at her.
"That's right. A traditional Japanese one. I think it could be nice, but it's okay if you don't want to."
"I wouldn't mind it. In fact, I think it's a wonderful idea and we can definitely talk about it later on."
"Are you serious?" Her face beamed with happiness.
"Of course! Traditional Japanese weddings are beautiful. Not to mention, your mother would love it."
"She really would. So are we settled?"
"We are settled." He smiled back at her.
"So what else do you want to do?"
"Maybe we could go for a walk or something. Takeru is here for a couple more days with Kimi."
"Really? Then we should do something together later tonight."
"Sure, I'll call him."
.
"It's freezing tonight!" Sora rubbed her arms as soon as she got out of the car.
"It's just a small distance to the bar. We will barely feel the cold if we walk in a fast pace."
"Let's go then."
"Are you warm enough though? It doesn't seem like it."
"I am, trust me. I'm wearing two layers of clothes. Do I look puffy?"
"Puffy?"
"Yeah, because of the clothes. I do feel puffy."
"No, I think you look perfect. Especially with this purple beanie."
"Stop it!" Sora playfully hit him in the arm.
"Hey!"
"If you're bothered by it, you might have to catch me first." She began to run towards the restaurant.
"What are you doing?"
"Don't tell me you got over playing small games with your wife."
"Absolutely not." Yamato ran towards her and wrapped his arms around her waist seconds later, spinning her around.
Their screams drew the attention from some people around them, but they didn't mind it at all.
"This isn't fair, Yamato!"
"Oh now you're talking about fair?" He spun her around, so they were looking into each other's eyes.
"I should really start exercising again."
"We can do it together."
"Sure, I'd love to." Sora stood on her toes and kissed him briefly. "Come, we should go in."
"Yamato! Sora!" Takeru stood up from his seat and grinned at his brother and his sister-in-law.
"I'm sorry we're a little late." Yamato grinned back. "We…"
"We saw everything through the window. It's alright, really."
"I think it's cute you have these silly moments." Kimi placed both her hands on Takeru's hips and bent to her left. "It's sweet."
"Thank you." Sora blushed heavily and looked away.
"So, did you two already order?"
"No, we were waiting for you to get here."
"Well, I hope you aren't that starving."
"We aren't." Takeru went back to his seat and waited for them to sit across him and Kimi. "So, we have something to tell you both."
"What is it?"
"We finally set a date. We're getting married this year."
"What?!" Both Sora and Yamato said at the same time, completely surprised and shocked.
"That's right. We're getting married this year."
"That's so great!" Sora exclaimed. "When did you decide it?"
"A couple of days ago. But in fact, we started talking about it after you two got married."
"I'm so happy for you two!"
"When is it going to be?"
"June 24th. We still have a few months to go."
Kimi reached for Takeru's hand. "But we would like to ask you to be our bridesmaid and best man."
"Of course! That's a yes for us." Sora looked at Yamato, who had a serious expression on his face. "Yamato? Is everything okay?"
"Everything is fine. I'm just still taking in the fact my baby brother is getting married."
"I'm way past my baby era." Takeru teased. "I just turned twenty-six."
"I know, but you'll always be my baby brother." Yamato teased back. "Have you told mom and dad yet?"
"Not yet. We're planning to have a dinner party at Kimi's place with both our families and tell them together. You two are invited to go as well."
"Thank you. We'll be there."
"Awesome."
"It's so crazy to think half of our group is already married." Sora stated. "Mimi, Hikari, us and now you."
"If it was up to me, we'd have gotten married much sooner."
"She wanted us to get married when I finished college."
"But I'm glad we waited now."
"Me too."
.
February came and Yamato and Sora decided to have a short trip on the weekend after Valentine's Day, skipping their present exchange tradition that year. When she arrived home, she was surprised to see he had already packed everything.
"Hey."
"Hi!" He exclaimed as he looked up at her. "I thought I could get everything ready by the time you came back home."
"Aren't you thoughtful?" Sora sat on the bed and kissed him hello. "I'm sorry, I thought I could leave work earlier."
"Don't worry about it." Yamato smiled at her. "I hope I got everything you need."
"I trust you. Can you believe this is our first trip together as husband and wife?"
"That's right! It sounds like music when you say it."
"Baby, everything sounds like music to you." She teased. "Not that I'm complaining though. I love it."
He stood up and opened a drawer on his bedside table.
"What are you doing?"
"I figured I could take my harmonica with me, just in case."
"You haven't played it in years." Sora knew exactly why he suddenly remembered it, though. "Are you sure you still know to play it?"
"Haha, very funny." Yamato laughed. "I don't forget things easily."
"Oh yeah?" She asked in a daring tone. "So tell me where we had our first kiss."
"We were in open area between our buildings. I remember Gabumon was anxious to eat the cake and kept rushing me to go home. I just wanted to kiss you."
"Me too. I wasn't sure how you would feel about it. Plus, I don't think I would be brave enough to be the one to take the initiative at the time."
"And are you brave enough now?" Yamato asked and Sora could swear she saw a flash in his eyes.
"Absolutely." She snatched his harmonica from his hands and put it on the bedside table. Then she sat on his lap and stared intensely into his blue eyes behind his glasses. "Wanna find out?"
"Baby, I would love to, trust me." He tried to sound steady, but he knew his voice failed miserably. He was sure she had caught on it as well. Still, he proceeded. "But we have a trip ahead. If we arrive late, we won't be able to check in tonight."
"Not even a minute?" She asked disappointed and dropped her head a little.
"I'm sorry, baby. It pains me to say it, believe me." He lifted her chin and his eyes met hers. "But we will by the time we get to the hotel, if you can wait."
"Well, we do have time to kiss before leaving, don't we?"
"Oh yes, we do." And right after that, his hands were on her back and on the back of her head, pulling her closer to him and kissing her slowly and passionately.
The radio was a little loud, but the song was muffled by Yamato's and Sora's voices singing at the top of their lungs.
"Can you believe this is our first trip together as a married couple?" Sora asked after the song ended and the radio was turned down. "I mean, besides our honeymoon."
"I know. Are you excited about it?"
"I think the fact I was singing loudly proves it."
"That's true."
"What about you?"
"I'm excited too. I just wish it wasn't such a short trip."
"Well, you can't win everytime, right?"
"Right."
"Are you tired of driving already? We can switch."
"I'm still good, but I might take on your offer soon."
"Great."
"So what do you want to listen to right now?"
"I have a song on my phone I want to play."
"Which one?"
"You'll find out very very soon." Sora had a smile on her face, despite her mysterious tone. She scrolled through her phone searching for the song. "There! Here we go."
Yamato couldn't help but laugh when the first chords from one of Knife of Day songs started playing. "I can't believe you still have it."
"Of course I do. They were great."
"They really were. This made me miss high school time."
"I'm sorry, baby. I didn't mean to make you upset."
"You didn't. I miss it in a good way. Don't you?"
"Honestly?" She looked at him. "Yes and no."
"Elaborate."
"I miss how everything seemed so easy back then. I mean, sure we were worried about the infections and our future, but still… and I don't miss the time we tried to convince everyone else we weren't together, but sneaked around quite often."
"Well, we just couldn't ignore our feelings for each other. And we didn't want to."
"Exactly." Sora bit her lower lip for a moment before speaking again. "Do you think your feelings for me have changed?"
"If my feelings have changed?" He repeated with his eyebrows raised, but forcing himself to look at the road ahead.
"That's right."
"I think that's normal, isn't it? They're still pretty strong though, and I hope they stay that way."
"Yeah…" She said vaguely, almost as if she was dreaming.
"Why do you ask?"
"I don't know." She shrugged, unsure. "It's just something that came into my mind, I guess."
"You don't think your feelings have changed?"
"Oh no, they have. But I…" Sora shook her head. "You know what? Forget what I said."
"Are you sure?"
"I am." She turned on the song again.
"I just love the smell of the sea air." It was the first thing Sora said when she got off the car after they arrived at their destination. "Can I mention the fact this hotel is right in front of the sea? I love it."
"I knew you would. Unfortunately the weather is too cold to go into it, so we'll have to find something else to do this weekend."
"I can't say I'm not disappointed, but we can still enjoy it a way, right?"
"I guess so." Yamato closed the trunk of their car and looked at her. "Are you going to stay here?"
"Absolutely not!" She linked her arm with his and looked into his blue eyes. "I'm really excited to see our room."
He couldn't help but smile at her. "I love how you're always so cheerful whenever we take a trip."
"Of course. First, I have the best company in the world. Second, I'm always curious to know what the places will be like. It's also very cool to visit new places. I think we should go overseas again. I miss that."
"Go to France again?"
"Sure, but we can go to a different country this time. But we can talk about it in another time. For now let's just enjoy this one."
"Good idea."
Both of them were amazed with the decoration in the hotel and it wasn't any different when they walked into their room. Yamato let himself fall in the bed and let out a wide smile.
"Baby, you should really try this bed. It's so comfortable!"
"Wow, this bathroom is amazing." Sora stated seconds before she walked out the door. "Look at you, so happy."
"Come on…" He leaned on his elbow and tapped the empty spot next to him. "You should really try it on."
"Alright." She lied down beside him. "You're right, this bed is really comfortable. It makes me want to buy one."
"We should."
"We really should." She tugged on his collar. "So what do you want to do to spend our first Valentine's Day as a married couple?"
"I'm sorry, I don't think I heard it well." Yamato brushed her hair gently. "Can you repeat it, please?"
"Silly." Sora giggled. "I asked what you want to do for our first Valentine's Day as a married couple."
"It feels so good to hear you say married couple." He leaned over and kissed her briefly. Then he reached for his phone to look at the time. "I think it's a little late to take a walk now, isn't it?"
"It is." She nodded. "I suppose we're gonna have to stay here and find something else to entertain ourselves with."
"Do you have anything in mind?"
"We can watch a movie, maybe. It doesn't mean we need to pay attention to it entirely though. It's Valentine's Day after all."
"I like the way you think." He gave her another kiss. "Since we're here celebrating this special date, we should make a toast."
"But baby, we didn't bring any drink with us."
"That's true, but maybe we can buy one from the bar down there."
"We can try." Sora watched him pull further away from her to call the reception and stood on her knees behind him, massaging his shoulders and back.
Yamato stretched his neck and felt most of the tension in that area of his body disappear thanks to her amazing hands.
