Chapter Two:

Toshinori watched anxiously as young Midoriya opened the bento box. "Uh, I don't cook much." He fidgeted with the bandage on one finger from when he'd cut himself chopping the sushi roll. "But my teacher Nana used to make bentos for me. I've been practicing."

The Izuku from another universe beamed. "All Might's cooking! It's a collector's item! I should take it home and freeze it so I can preserve it forever."

Toshinori laughed. "No, you're supposed to eat it. I filled it with nutrients for your training."

Izuku stared at the bento and sighed. "I just can't. If I eat it, then it's gone."

"I'll make you another one to take back to your universe."

Izuku beamed. "I'll hold you to that promise! Then I can eat this one." He dug in. "It's delicious. My other self eats these all the time?" There was an edge to his question. It was difficult to say what emotion was contained within his voice, but it was clearly not a happy feeling.

A shudder ran through Toshinori. This Izuku had said that his All Might didn't like him. He remembered his ill-fated first encounter with Izuku and his harsh denial of the boy's dream back then. Had he never corrected his mistake in the other universe? "Young Midoriya, I'm so sorry for what I said after the Sludge Villain attacked you—"

"I was never attacked by a Sludge Villain," Izuku said. "Kacchan ran into him…but I sorted that out. I only met you once. I think at the time I was bothering you when you were trying to do hero work, because you wouldn't stop and answer my question. You never became a teacher at U.A."

Oh, then this Izuku's universe had turned out completely different. Even if it wasn't as bad as Toshinori had feared, he still felt disappointed that his other self had missed out on the ideal successor. "What a shame. I can't imagine anyone inheriting One for All except you."

"Aw, you really are nice!" Izuku immediately leapt up and hugged Toshinori.

This Izuku was a lot more clingy, not that Toshinori minded. He patted the boy on the back and wondered if he'd suffered some hardship in his world that had made him desire more physical contact. Even though this Izuku seemed cheerful, it didn't come across as entirely sincere to Toshinori. He'd used fake smiles often enough in his hero work to recognize them on someone else. Just as he was groping around for a diplomatic way to ask more about this Izuku's universe, he felt his power start to run out. With an oof, he deflated back to his skinny form. Blood spurted from his mouth as he coughed.

Izuku stared with wide eyes. "It's a small All Might! What a rare collector's item!" His fingers twitched.

"I hope I didn't surprise you too much, my boy," Toshinori said, a smile covering up his unease. He couldn't quite put his finger on why. Maybe because this Izuku was acting like his most unpleasant fans—the creepy, obsessive ones who treated him like an object instead of a person. It sharply contrasted with the horror that his Izuku had shown upon first seeing his injuries on their very first meeting. This one didn't seem to have any concern for an injured person at all. Toshinori mopped the blood off his chin. Maybe he was being too judgmental. Young Midoriya was an exceptionally kind-hearted boy. He didn't know this current version well enough to judge him—just because he didn't react the exact same way as his alternate didn't mean that he wasn't kind, too.

Izuku poked Toshinori's side. "How fascinating. I'm not surprised that One for All poses a strain on the body. I wonder what the correct quirk would be to pair with it? A stamina quirk, perhaps?"

See, the other Izuku was already thinking of ways to help him, even if they were only improbable theories. He'd judged too hastily. Toshinori smiled with relief.

Aizawa approached them. "May I have a moment alone with Midoriya?"

The teacher's face looked grim. "Of course," Toshinori said. "Young Midoriya, I'll deliver your second bento soon." Maybe he'd make one out of clay so it could be kept without eating.

Once alone with the parallel universe Izuku, Aizawa got straight to the point. "I spoke to Power Loader. Based on the readings from around the field where you arrived, he's confident that the transfer between universes was initiated on your end. Are you certain you don't know what happened?"

Izuku's shoulders sagged. He whispered, "I was hit by the quirk of a villain who swaps people with their alternate universe doubles. I'm sorry I didn't say anything sooner. But it always wears off in a week or less. You don't need to worry. Your Izuku will be back soon."

Aizawa's eyebrows rose. But he carefully kept his tone non-judgmental. "Why didn't you tell us sooner?"

"Because I didn't want to help you switch us back faster." Izuku burst into tears. "In my universe…Sho-chan is dead. When I saw him, I…I…I wanted to stay by his side a little longer. At least for this one week. I-I'm sorry."

"Oh, Midoriya." Aizawa offered a pack of tissues. Izuku glomped onto him. It horrified Aizawa to imagine a world where Shouto was dead, and all his friends suffering his loss. This explained a great deal about Izuku's strangeness. No wonder he was so clingy. Perhaps this also explained why Katsuki had been picking up on a sense of distress from the other Izuku. Katsuki must have been mistaking grief for anger.

Patting his student on the back, Aizawa said, "We can't delay the transfer. Our Midoriya might be upset and afraid about getting back. But you'll have at least a few days until Power Loader finishes setting up the portal. I'm very sorry for your loss."

Izuku sniffled into his shirt, crying hard enough to soak him. At least that one aspect of him hadn't changed.

Aizawa hesitated. He still wanted to ask about Izuku using Erasure. This felt like the wrong moment, with his student grieving. But it kept nagging at the back of his mind. "Midoriya, what's your quirk? I saw you use more than one."

Izuku said, "I have a copying power. The first time, I used a quirk from a villain I'd been fighting before I transferred. I copied your Erasure at the classroom. I only need to briefly touch someone to copy their power."

This sounded legitimate. Aizawa's shoulders relaxed. There had been a good explanation for everything, after all.

Izuku said, "I hope you'll keep what I said a secret. I don't want to upset Sho-chan." His eyes were wide, guileless, and innocent.

"I quite agree," Aizawa said. "There's no need for Todoroki to know about his other self's death."

"Thank you." Izuku smiled.

In his fury upon learning that the other Izuku wanted to kidnap Shouto, Izuku had flung open the door. Now he stared up at All for One's calculating face. But Izuku didn't shut the door. If he planned to save Shouto, then he couldn't afford to remain cowering in this cell. And, little though he liked it, he would need All for One's help. Izuku wouldn't know where to begin trying to get back to his own world on his own.

"What do you want in exchange for helping me?" Izuku asked.

"You're already partly delivered it. I want freedom. And I'd like the return of my son, except this time under my own control." All for One sighed. "I'm afraid he's become unstable. He can no longer be trusted on his own."

Izuku eyed his old enemy, considering. Based on everything he knew about the other Izuku, locking him up would be good for the world. It would also stop him from coming after Izuku's Shouto again. However, Izuku felt uneasy about unleashing All for One instead. Nor did he trust the villain. Ideally, he'd like to see them both locked up.

But Izuku had no means to do that at the moment. In the short run, getting back home and protecting Shouto had to be his top priorities. He'd watch his back and deal with any betrayal from All for One as it came. "Fine. Do you know how to swap us back?"

"I wasn't privy to my son's latest experiments," All for One said. "But you have one person who knows everything. Katsuki Bakugo has been Izuku's best friend since early childhood and his right-hand man. But perhaps we could reprogram him to be loyal to you, instead."

"We could do what now?" Izuku had heard that, he just didn't want to believe it. Kacchan's strong will had always been his most enduring and obvious trait. Izuku couldn't imagine his childhood friend ever being controlled by anyone.

All for One said, "Or it might be even easier to simply free those two friends of my son's: the gravity quirk girl and the speed quirk boy. My alarmingly precocious son threatened my doctor into building a brainwashing device for him. I'd be proud if he hadn't tried to use it on me. My long years and training allowed me to resist. My son has his two friends in solitary confinement in order to break down their minds enough to brainwash them. I don't know if he's succeeded yet."

It had somehow managed to be even worse than Izuku had feared. He wanted to throw himself on the floor and scream. But he had to save Shouto. His future mental breakdown came second to that.

Izuku stormed over and opened the cell containing Katsuki. His childhood friend snored lightly on the floor. Izuku knelt down next to him. "How do I remove the brainwashing?"

"Are you sure that's a good idea? People resent those who mind-controlled them after being free. The boy may react violently. I'm speaking from personal experience."

"Of course you are." Izuku glared. "Tell me now or our deal ends."

"You're far more reckless than my own son." All for One had the nerve to sound amused. Izuku glared harder. The villain shrugged. "Break my handcuffs, and I'll tell you."

Izuku hesitated. He trusted All for One not one bit, but he also didn't see any way to make it home without their alliance. "Fine." He let a spark flow through his fingers as he wrenched the metal apart.

All for One stretched his arms with a satisfied smile. "Turn the boy over and look for a metal chip on his neck."

Izuku found a round metal device at the top of Katsuki's spine. It flashed red. Dammit, he probably could have found that on his own if he'd looked longer. He asked, "How do I remove it?"

"Crush it, and the effects should vanish."

Izuku barely even needed his quirk. He ground the device to dust between his fingers. An electric spark shot out. It zapped him, knocking him backward to the ground. Katsuki screamed and thrashed, then went worryingly and uncharacteristically silent.

Leaping to his feet, Izuku shouted, "You didn't say that it would hurt him!"

"I'm not familiar with the device particulars. I don't think my son has ever tried to remove one before. He killed the doctor who created them." All for One shrugged, as if to say that the other Izuku was a common murder hazard.

Izuku checked Katsuki's pulse. It felt steady. "Do you have a healing ability?"

"You expect me to heal him?" All for One sounded like someone had asked him to take out the trash. "No."

Katsuki's bloodshot eyes snapped open. Then he launched himself forward and fastened his hands around Izuku's throat.

Izuku hesitated to use his full strength, not wanting to hurt the injured brainwashing victim. With his last breath, he cried, "I'm not the evil Izuku. I'm from a different world, and I'm here to stop my other self."

Katsuki growled, "I know that! Shut up! You don't know anything about him!"

The fingers tightened, Izuku's vision showed spots, and he realized he might have hesitated too long.

All for One jerked Katsuki off, then struck him in the back of the neck. Katsuki's head lolled over and his eyes closed.

"What did you do?" Izuku demanded, leaping to his feet.

All for One said, "I merely put the loudmouth to sleep. I refrained from killing him because we still need his information." He sounded like he expected praise for not murdering. "Did you want me to let him to keep strangling you?"

Izuku massaged his throat. "I'm sure he has cause to hate the other me."

"Yes, but you'd still be dead and unable to save anyone from your own universe."

Unable to dispute the point, Izuku asked, "Did he hate me because we broke the brainwashing or because we failed to?" Now that he thought about it, Katsuki's last words had been a bit strange. Why did Katsuki still seem loyal to the person who'd brainwashed him? Was it Stockholm Syndrome? It figured that Izuku's evil self somehow seemed to get along better with his Katsuki. Did Izuku have a poor affinity with Kacchans?

"I didn't interact with explosion boy much. I have no idea the cause of his neurosis." All for One sneered.

Looking into those icy red eyes, Izuku realized he'd asked the wrong person if he'd wanted the ability to understand other people's feelings. Izuku dropped the subject. He lifted Katsuki up and placed him on the bed. Hopefully Katsuki would sleep this off, since the only doctor in the building was dead.

To be on the safe side, Izuku locked the vault door behind him. Then Izuku looked around the circular area with the half a dozen doors. "Are my friends—the other versions of my friends—behind these doors? Does one of them lead to the outside?" All the doors looked the same. Izuku hoped he hadn't somehow been trapped in a place with no exit. Surely the other Katsuki must have a way out.

All for One shrugged. "I would assume so. You're asking the wrong person—I didn't design this place."

"Didn't your son lock you up in your own prison?"

"He did at first," All for One reluctantly admitted. "I've been moved several times."

Izuku picked a door at random and used the eye scanner to open it.

An astonishing array of All Might merchandise greeted his eyes. Posters covered every square inch of the walls. There were two tenth anniversary posters, identical to the one in Sir Nighteye's office. Stacks of figurines rose knee-high. Izuku recognized most of them, but a few unfamiliar ones made his fingers itch. Everything from T-shirts to coffee mugs filled the shelves. A life-sized statue of All Might stood in a glass case in the back of the room. Izuku took a closer look at the disturbingly realistic hair and frost covering the closed eyelids. This was not a statue. It was All Might's corpse. Izuku screamed.

All for One said, "Don't look at me. If I'd killed All Might, I'd have never kept the body around. But my son had an obsession with everything All Might-related, and he viewed the hero himself as the ultimate piece of merchandise."

Izuku sank to his knees and dry-heaved.

All for One said, "If you're going to be sick, vomit on the merchandise." His hand reached toward a dial on the glass case.

One for All reacted even faster than Izuku, as if powered by a primal instinct to stop All for One's bullshit. Izuku's hand shot out to grab the villain's wrist. "The hell are you doing?"

"Nothing," All for One said, too casually.

Izuku took a closer look at the beeping panel on the glass case. There was a line clearly monitoring vitals. He whirled around. "All Might is still alive in there? But not for much longer if you'd had your way!"

All for One sighed. "You should have let me pull the plug. He'll arrest you if he gets out. Personally, I don't see the differences between a living All Might-sicle and a dead one, but for some reason my son wanted a live addition to the collection."

Izuku would have liked to wake All Might up, but he had no idea what any of those buttons did, and he certainly couldn't trust All for One to tell him. But he couldn't just leave his hero in there, either. He'd have to do something about this situation in the ever-nebulous later in the back of his head. Izuku shoved All for One out the door, then slammed the door shut behind them. He felt better with a metal wall only he could open between All for One and All Might. He asked, "Are you sure you want your son back? He's a sick bastard."

All for One smirked. "He'd be cute without his quirks."

Izuku's skin crawled. He wanted out of this place. "This door had better not contain another frozen hero." Izuku unlocked the next door.

Dabi lay on the bed. His arms and legs had been cuffed to the bedposts like a mental patient. A blindfold covered his eyes. His limbs were skinny and his lips cracked. Needle pricks covered his elbow. He twitched. That proved he was alive, which greatly relieved Izuku. After last time, he'd feared the worse.

At the first sound, Dabi thrashed on the bed. He howled, "I'll kill you."

"I'm not your Izuku. I'm from another universe." Izuku attempted again to explain. His eyes scanned the charts on the walls, in his own handwriting. His other self had been researching phoenix quirk genes. Dabi appeared to be here as a test subject. What on earth were phoenix genes?

"I can confirm this is not the same Izuku Midoriya," All for One said, leaning in the doorway with a bored expression.

Dabi went insane, thrashing against his bonds. (He did not use fire—was his quirk gone?) Dabi screamed, "I don't care. I'll kill him! I'll kill every single version of him across every universe!" The hatred in his voice made Izuku recoil.

All for One said, "This B-rated villain didn't work for my son. He doesn't know anything. Leave him."

Although not without a pang of guilt, Izuku closed the door on the other Dabi. These were inhumane conditions to keep anyone in. But he did not feel quite guilty enough to risk being strangled again. He wondered what other Izuku had done to Dabi. The imprisonment might have been enough—but Izuku didn't think that level of hatred had come from that alone.

Izuku marched over to the next door and opened it. "This door had better not contain another frozen hero or a villain who wants to kill me."

Ochaco Uraraka sat at her desk, eating a sandwich. She wasn't restrained, which immediately made Izuku fear she'd go for his throat, too. He raised his hands. "I'm not Izuku Midoriya! Or rather, I am, but from another universe! I'm a hero! A good one, not a fake one like my other self!"

Ochaco gasped. A crumb fell from her mouth. Her eyes sought out All for One's face. "He did it?"

All for One nodded. "I thought him mad, but he succeeded in breaking the barrier between universes. This is a different Izuku. He's willing to free us in exchange for help returning to his world."

Ochaco sighed. "You know if I ran, our Izuku would make the same threat again and I'd have to come back."

All for One said, "Rendering my son harmless is part of our deal, too."

"You plan to arrest him?" Ochaco asked. Her tone didn't sound entirely happy.

All for One said, "I plan to look after my son myself."

Ochaco's eyes narrowed. "Pardon me if I doubt your ability to contain Izuku for long."

It surprised Izuku to see that Ochaco wasn't scared of All for One. But she must have never known him as a villain, only a fellow prisoner. Izuku would place good money that All for One had been polite to her in the past in hopes that she would be useful. Even though All for One actually struggled to remember her name. Izuku asked, "Why can't you escape?"

Ochaco met his gaze. "Because your counterpart threatened to kill the rest of Class 1-A if I tried to leave him."

Tears filled Izuku's eyes. "Is the other me insane?"

"Very," Ochaco said. "I'm glad that's your reaction. It's a normal way to react. The other Izuku…he wasn't normal. He seemed polite and friendly at first. But he could watch almost anyone die and remain completely unaffected. Unless you became one of the handful of people he cared about…and that could be even worse. It started out small. I needed money? I won the lottery. Shouto hated his flames? Izuku gave him an ice quirk and a cold resistance quirk." Her voice trembled slightly on Shouto's name, a recent wound. "Tenya wanted to kill Stain? He received a card leading him to a warehouse where a bound and gagged Stain was waiting for him. Izuku never understood why Tenya couldn't do it. Or why Tenya started to distance himself afterward. Izuku reacted badly to the distance. Izuku's love was like glitter—once it got on you, you couldn't get it off."

Izuku had no energy left to be surprised, only resigned. "He locked you up here because you tried to leave?"

"Funnily, no." Ochaco's lips twisted in an unfunny way. "After Shouto d-died, Izuku decided the hero game was too dangerous. I thought he honestly cared about helping people—but heroism was just a game to him. We reacted badly to being kidnapped, of course. Our class tried to help us, and it got…ugly." Her shoulders shook. "We had to go with him to stop him from killing anyone."

Izuku declined to press her for more details. "I'm sorry."

"He told me he forgave me for betraying him, but he needed to brainwash me, as a step 'to prevent future betrayals.' But he's the one who betrayed us! He was lying to us all along!" Ochaco sobbed.

Izuku's hands hovered, wanting to pat her back but certain she didn't want him touching her. "He was probably too self-centered to see that."

Ochaco rubbed her eyes. "I'll help you. I don't want him to hurt another Shouto, even if yours isn't the same as mine. But I don't know where to find the world transfer device or how it works."

"Then our best shot is the Bakugo brat." All for One shook his head and sighed.

"Where's Tenya?" Izuku asked. He couldn't leave his friend locked up, even a different version of his friend.

"I haven't seen him since I came here." Ochaco gnawed on her lip. "But he must be behind one of those doors." She gestured outside her room.

With trepidation in his heart, Izuku tried another door. This room was stuffed full of all kinds of hero merchandise, with a boatload of Eraserhead merch, but fortunately no hero bodies, dead or alive.

In the next room, Tenya lay on a bed. Unlike Dabi, he was not strapped down. Looking at his legs, his quirk was gone. A cord extended from the back of his neck to a beeping machine.

Izuku ran over. Tenya had a chip in the back of his neck that looked just like the one in Katsuki.

One of Tenya's eyes opened. A smile formed on his lips. He slurred, "I-Izuku? This is…the hospital? Yes, how kind of you to visit me."

Izuku recoiled, heart filled with horror. He could not bear to see his friend like this, not in control of his own mind. His hand shot out and ground the chip to dust.

Tenya collapsed backward on the bed, unconscious.

"Oh no!" Ochaco cried, running forward. She stroked Tenya's forehead.

Izuku regretted his impulsiveness. "What happened?" he asked All for One.

All for One shrugged. "Drugs make the brainwashing easier. I'm sure what's-his-name will be fine after they wear off."

Izuku couldn't trust the villain's word, but he had no other source of information. If only they could get Tenya to a real hospital. "This place must have an exit." He marched over to the next door and scanned his eye.

It opened to reveal a smooth metal hallway. Izuku blinked, surprised. Deep down, he'd lost hope and expected to find nothing but endless cells in this place. Turning around, Izuku asked, "Do you know where this hallway leads?"

All for One said, "There's an army of Nomu just outside. They might obey you, if they mistake you for the real Izuku. Or he might have taken precautions to prevent that."

Izuku muttered, "Better not to risk it." His counterpart seemed evil but not stupid. He'd definitely have taken precautions. "Do we have to worry about the League of Villains?"

This got him two blank stares. All for One said, "What a cheesy name. Sounds like a gamer thought of it."

Ochaco looked up from her position kneeling at Tenya's bed. "Our Izuku relied exclusively on Nomu. He used them to boost his own fame as a hero by creating fake villain incidents for him to solve."

"Do you know a Tomura Shigaraki? Or a Tenko Shimura?"

Ocacho said, "Tenko Shimura is our upperclassman at U.A."

This universe was very, very different.

Ochaco said, "I'd like to find a phone to contact Mr. Aizawa. He must be worried sick about us. The other Izuku left him alive after taking his quirk, at least. He was always fond of Mr. Aizawa." She took a deep breath as if restraining a sob. "Mr. Aizawa will help me even if I'm not his student any longer."

"Not his student?" Izuku asked.

"I'm leaving U.A." Ochaco bit her lip. "I don't want to be a hero any longer. I just can't see myself becoming a hero without Shouto and Izuku…the other Izuku."

Hearing her say that broke Izuku's heart, especially because he couldn't shake the feeling that it was somehow his fault, because of what his other self had done.

He had no right to try and talk her out of it. They were nearly strangers, despite knowing each other's counterparts. But he hated his other self for destroying this Ochaco's dream. "Do you think my phone might work? It came from another world." Izuku unlocked his phone, then tossed it over. "You can try, at least."

"Thank you." Ochaco caught the phone. "Uh…do you think Mr. Aizawa's phone number is the same in both of our universes? Because I don't have it memorized."

"Maybe?"

"I'll try texting your contact for him. If that doesn't work, then we'll see if I can reach emergency services. Frankly, I'd rather talk to my teachers at U.A. first. Oh, dear, I don't know where we are. Maybe they can trace the message?"

"If you can get through, tell them Dabi is here too. Why on earth is Dabi here, anyway?"

Ochaco winced. As she kept texting, she said, "The other Izuku kept Dabi around like some kind of twisted present for Shouto. He kept saying that he didn't understand before how much it would upset Shouto if Dabi died, so he'd make up for it." Catching Izuku's confused expression, she explained, "Our Shouto died saving his older brother's life."

Several things about this failed to compute. Gears turned in Izuku's brain. "Wait a moment. Dabi is Shouto's older brother?"

The phone buzzed. Ochaco cried. "It worked! I got a reply from Mr. Aizawa."

A cough came from the other room. Katsuki's room. "He's awake," Izuku said, running over. He was desperate for answers.

"Psst!"

Shouto Todoroki looked up from his lunch. The white-haired Izuku stood at the cafeteria window, waving for him to come outside.

Immediately, Shouto set down his spoon and left the cafeteria. He met the white-haired Izuku at the back of the building. "What's wrong? You looked worried."

"It's All Might." White-haired Izuku waved at a scrawny, unconscious man on the ground.

Shouto double-took. "That's All Might? But he looks so skinny."

"He has serious health problems," white-haired Izuku said. "He's been keeping it secret to avoid a public panic. The teachers at U.A. know."

Shouto nodded. "Of course you'd know too, since you're his lovechild."

"Really? Is that true in this universe?"

"You never admitted to it, but I'm quite certain."

White-haired Izuku shrugged. "Interesting. Maybe that's why the other me doesn't have All for—" He seemed to remember himself. "Forget that, we need to help All Might to the nurse's office. He passed out while we were having lunch. But we can't let anyone else see him like this. I need your help to carry him."

Shouto nodded. "I'm on it." He felt touched and honored that Izuku had trusted him with such an important secret about his father. Also, his friend had finally accepted the lovechild theory as truth! He bent over and picked up All Might's legs.

White-haired Izuku said, "I wish we could play around longer. But it looks like a few people are getting suspicious."

Something struck Shouto from behind, and his world went black.
