Chapter Five

Several Hours earlier...

"So, Alador. What else has been happening?" Asked Odalia, minutes after she had gotten out of bed. As she put some clothes on in the oak-panelled bedroom, Alador braced himself for a yelling.

"Well... there was a break-in..."

"A WHAT!?" Odalia screamed, suddenly more dangerous than an angry lioness.

Alador winced "It was Daredevil. They were looking at some papers on the secret hiding place we finished building last week."

Odalia growled "I can't believe this happened on your and Jenkins' watch!" she growled, pinching the brim of her nose "i'm going to contact the Kingpin."

...

Amity Blight had had a stressful past few Days.

First, her crush had passed out for seemingly no reason. Then she didn't respond to her text message. Then mom got sick, which worried her dad out.

Fortunately, her luck had turned. Her Mom had miraculously recovered, cheering her dad up. Now Luz had FINALLY responded to her text.

'Sorry I took so long to answer. I'm doing better than OK now!' it had read.

As She began thinking of how amazing Luz was, Amity was hit in the face with a Rugby ball.

"Focus, Blight!" snapped Boscha, running past her to grab the Ball.

Amity sighed. Weekend Rugby practice with Boscha as team captain was far from easy. Especially when their 'Coach' was taking a nap.

Pushing these thoughts aside, Amity focused and ran to tackle Skara to the emerald-green grass.

...

Odalia sat at her computer, opening Skype and calling The Kingpin. The mysterious figure who ran the entire city underground.

A figure veiled in shadow stared at her, his expression unreadable.

"What is it, Blight? I'm a busy man."

"Kingpin!" Odalia smiled in her businesslike manner "I'm sorry to bother you, but I need your help!"

There was a second's silence "Go on."

"Daredevil is trying to prove our part in the Character Business. I need to be rid of him, but I'm... too busy to do it myself."

The Kingpin tilted his head "Very well. Here's what you must do, Mrs Blight..."

...

Luz's mom had said 'Yes' to Gus coming over when she had asked. Then, they had all gotten to work on the costume with Camila teaching them how it works.

"Where'd you learn to sew, Camila?" asked Gus, curiously.

"My Grandparents challenged me to learn in exchange for twenty bucks one summer when I was fourteen." chuckled Camila "It's amazing what people will do for Money."

As they finished the white one-piece suit that would have gone from Luz's arms to her ankles if she were wearing it at the moment, Luz turned to her Mom.

"Thanks Mami." smiled Luz "We can take it from here."

"Okay Luz. I'm going to the store, alright? I'll be back in an hour." said Camila, hugging her daughter goodbye "Be careful while you're making your costume." She suddenly took a dramatic pose "Remember: With great Power, there must also come great responsibility!"

Luz laughed "That's not what Azura says in book two, Mom! And what does that have to do with making costumes?"

"I don't know." said Camila, shrugging "I guess it could mean to be careful. Love you, Mija."

As the sound of the family car faded away, Gus took out a bottle of black dye he had brought with him.

"Ready Luz?" he asked, grinning like an excited child (which he was).

"Ready as Hecate, buddy. Also, where did you get this stuff?"

"The 'Super Cheap costume making store' near school.

"It's really convenient for us that that store exists."

"Some might call it Plot Convenience."

Then with a flourish, Gus dumped the entire bottle onto the costume.

...

Jenkins the Butler was cleaning the Manor Dinner Table. The masters and Mistresses were out for what they called 'Business'. Oh well, he wasn't paid to pry. But he could make a few guesses. Mind you, he hadn't been paid properly in a few months. He would have to ask about that when the Blights returned...

As he was finishing up, he got a text from Odalia.

The message read:

'Jenkins.

They know about Character.

Get out of there right now and go to the secret hiding place.'

Signed,

Odalia Blight.'

Ten minutes later, Jenkins was running to the 1920s Rolls Royce with a heavily packed bag.

As he drove off, a figure on the rooftop listened to the sounds of the engine and smelled the exhaust and burning rubber.

Then when the vehicle was far enough, they chased after him.

A red Bodysuit with maroon and yellow highlights and black boots and gloves. Small horns rested just above the forehead of their red mask.

The mask of Daredevil.

...

Raine followed Jenkins as he drove out of the Borough of Walkinshire made his way towards Boiling Socks, which was near the port and where a lot of the middle and lower-class citizens lived. It was also where the most crime took place.

It was Eda who had come up with the plan. They didn't know for sure that Jenkins was involved in the assassination, so they decided to take a chance.

Jenkins parked the car outside an old abandoned warehouse and briskly walked into said building, stopping in the middle.

It was old and filthy, having been left to rot a hundred years before because it was too dangerous for the workers there (and considering the average factory, that was pretty bad).

Raine could smell the rust on the wall...

Hear to the rats that scurried around...

As Raine listened to the Butler/Assassin from behind the door Jenkins had entered, he suddenly dropped his bag, which landed with a loud CLUNK!

"I must say, you are an excellent tailer, Daredevil" Remarked Jenkins "But you are all too easy to manipulate."

"I don't sense anyone else in there, Jenkins." Remarked Raine, drawing their Billy Clubs.

"I don't need anyone this time around."

"I suppose you didn't need anyone when you killed Dr. Character, then?" asked Raine, stepping inside the room.

"Indeed. And you're next." Replied Jenkins, smugger than smug.

The sound of a zipper...

Mechanical wirring...

And then a high-pitched, concentrated sound...

And then unimaginable pain in their head and ears.

"Hypersonics." smiled the Butler "This machine's a little gift from the Kingpin. Brand new, you see. 100,000 Hz per second. Wanted us to give it a test run. Seems he knows a lot about you."

Raine thudded to the ground, clutching their head and screaming in pain.

"I must say" Said Jenkins, drawing his gun and raising it to their head "This is very satisfying, after you tied me up."

THWACK!

Jenkins keeled over, unconscious. Eda stood behind him, her walking stick raised.

"Bad guys have got to stop confessing their crimes before they kill the heroes." she muttered, running over to the machine and turned it off before kneeling beside the person she loved.

"Raine!" she yelled, shaking them.

"I'm okay..." groaned Raine, leaning on Eda as they got up "Did you get the footage?"

Eda took out her phone "Every second! Let's tie this ***hole up and get outta here, Rainestorm."

...

Hours later...

"Last night, an unidentified assailant murdered U.S. General Greene and the CEO of 'merican Weapons John Smith, as well as several others in an explosion. There are no witnesses, and thus this remains unsolved.

In other news, earlier today Arnold Jenkins, the Butler to the Blight Family, has been arrested on charges of murder, assault, criminal dealings and attempted Murder. Evidence was sent to the Police Department by an unknown person which shows Jenkins attacking Daredevil and confessing to the murder of A Dr. Character of Blight Industries. An hour ago, we spoke to Odalia Blight, who has denied any involvement and stated she needed to work."

"Turn it off."

Odalia did so, standing up and looking at a mirror on the wall on the purple wallpaper with green cash note patterns "There's no proof of my involvement. Any accusations will dispel."

"Why didn't you just let me take care of Character?" her reflection asked, tilting her head.

"The attack on 'merican Weapons was a test run of you, and a very successful one at that."

"Fair enough. What now?"

"I buy 'merican Weapons and intergrate it with the Company. Shut down their Human enhancement Program."

"Won't that lose you millions?"

"Please. Knowing 'merican Weapons products, it'd probably wear off in a month and give you dementia or something."

"And what about me?"

"Don't worry. There will be other targets for you."

"Good to hear, Partner."

...

That night, Raine and Eda stood on top of a rooftop in Boiling Socks. Raine was in costume, and Eda wore a black leather jacket over a T-Shirt that read 'Bad Girl'.

"Good first adventure back." smiled Eda "Think the case will succeed?"

"Even if Blight sent her Lawyers, it couldn't fail." smiled Raine "So, do you really plan to visit your sister?"

Eda nodded, her face sombre "I'm doing it tomorrow. It's..." she winced "It's gonna be tough."

Then, there was a scream of agony from an alleyway a block or two away.

Without hesitation, Raine ran towards the scream.

...

An hour earlier...

The costume had not turned out as planned.

In some areas, it was too light. In some, too dark. Guess they used too much black Dye.

The black cosplay hat from Luz's Witch cosplay costume, the black cape they had made from an old bedsheet and the Black Domino mask were fine, however. And that suited Luz just fine. They could work on the bodysuit later.#

Luz had decided to sneak out of the house and go to Boiling Socks, since that's where most of the crime was. She had gotten there by taxi, which was rather un-hero-like, but she was new to this. She'd find a way in the future.

As she made her way across the street, people kept stepping on her cape. Fortunately, most of them were nice about it.

"Sorry, kid!"

"My bad!"

"Pick that stupid thing up!"

I did say most of them.

As she took the stairs to the top of a three-floor building, she was quivering with excitement.

Then another cape problem came up.

As she passed a cleaning guy with a vacuum cleaner, the common sucking machine caught on her cape.

She was able to easily take it out once the guy had turned it off, but the problems really sucked.

Okay, okay. I'll stop.

As she stood on the edge of the roof, she took a deep breath.

This was her moment. This was where she became a superhero.

And she stretched out her hand, fired a web and jumped.

The web hit the building opposite her and she swung...

CRASH!

Straight into the building wall.

She unconsciously let go, falling down to the ground. She tried to stick to the walls, but it didn't work.

Oh nooooo...

BANG!

She landed unceremoniously in a dumpster.

As she climbed out of it and peeled a banana skin off of her head, five aggressive-looking figures came her way, armed with baseball bats.

"Awwww... is the ickle baby lost from home?" asked the leader, a blonde guy with a nose ring "Let's teach her how to find her way back." he smirked, raising his bat over Luz's head.

Her 'Danger Sense' went off. Not that there was much need to, since she could see the bat perfectly.

She leaped back to avoid the swinging weapon, accidentally pushing her legs too hard and flinging herself back into the dumpster.

She scrambled out of it and drew back her fist at the guy with the bat.

"Come on, widdle baby. Punch me. It's not like it'll do anything"

CRACK!

There was a terrible scream as the Guy clutched his quite literally bent arm. Luz covered her mouth, horrified.

That was not what was supposed to happen.

The other hoodlums rushed forward, their yelling sounded like thunder, except a thousand times louder.

And it hurt Luz's Ears as if they had been sliced open with an especially sharp knife.

As she sobbed in agony and confusion on the dirty ground, she felt blows like speeding trains rain all over her body.

She wanted it to stop... for it all to be over...

Then the blows stopped. There were cries of pain. Then a gentle voice, which still sounded louder than thunder.

"Need a hand?"

She looked up to see a figure in red offering her a hand up.

She had heard of them. Seen them in the newspapers and on TV.

Daredevil

...

Eda arrived at the scene a few minutes after Raine did.

A short-haired Latina girl in a black superhero costume was standing up, looking shaky.

"What happened?" asked Eda, rushing over.

Raine whispered to her "She was being beaten up by some idiots. I saved her."

The kid then began breathing shakily. More rapidly than was normal. She was having a panic attack.

"Kid, just breathe." Eda told her in a gentle tone , holding her hands up in a calming gesture "Just... breathe."

After a few minutes, he kid's breathing slowed. She looked at Eda, clearly not okay.

"Want some hot Chocolate?"

...

Ten minutes later, Luz was sitting on the rooftop, drinking hot chocolate with Daredevil and the smiling red-haired woman who introduced herself as Eda, who had given her the hot chocolate and calmed her down. Her overwhelming senses had died down, which was a good thing due to the universal truth that pain is unpleasant to almost everyone.

"Let me guess." said Eda, stroking her chin "You got superpowers and decided to become a superhero but your powers didn't work how you wanted them to in your hour of need."

Luz looked amazed "How'd you figure that out?"

"Happens more often than you'd think." Eda told her, looking at Raine knowingly "You okay?"

Luz sighed, taking off her mask "No."

And so she told them about her powers and how she planned to become a superhero, and how things had gone badly wrong so very quickly.

"Do- do you think that guy will be Okay?" Luz asked "I broke his arm. I didn't m-mean to, but..." she trailed off.

Daredevil bit their lip, and then replied "Probably."

Eda knelt in front of Luz, looking into her eyes "Kid... you probably need to learn how to use your powers properly... and I was planning on teaching the next generation anyway. What do you say?"

Luz nodded, smiling a little "That would be great. Thanks, Eda."

"I can also come up with a better costume for you if you-"

"No." Luz shook her head "If I become a superhero again, I'll just make things worse. Just... help me live a normal life where I can't mess everything up like I always do."

Eda sighed. This wasn't the time to argue with her. Besides, it was her choice. "Okay, kid."

As Raine grappled away, Luz took one last look at her domino mask...

Then threw it away.

...

"You sure you can make your way home from here?" asked Eda, as Luz got out of her car a few blocks away from her house.

"Positive." Luz nodded "Thanks, Eda."

Eda handed Luz a small note with her phone number on it "Don't be a stranger, kid."

And with that, she drove off.

As Luz was walking back, she heard raised voices.

"Stop! Thief!"

A man in a a ski mask with neon pink shoes rushed out of a nearby store. He was currently holding a dangerous object you may have heard of called a gun, so he was probably robbing the place.

Luz stared after him a second...

Then walked on.

Being a superhero had sounded like fun...

A chance to be more than the idiot weirdo in the principal's office...

But it wasn't. It was serious. And if she went out in costume again...

Someone was going to get hurt. Whether it be her, an innocent, or a criminal.

And she didn't want any of that.

...

As Luz made her way towards her street, she saw a crowd in the middle of the sidewalk.

Curious, she made her way through to see what was going on.

"Sorry!"

"Excuse me!"

"Don't mind me!"

As she arrived at the middle of the crowd, she saw what they were gathered around.

Her mother, lying in a pool of blood.

...

Two traumatic events in one night? Inconceivable! Oh, wait. This is the Owl house and Spider-man combined here...

In case some of you are confused, Luz's powers are still developing at this stage and she hasn't really practised with them much.

There is so much fanart potential in this fic...

Also, still asking for opinions on the colour for Luz's proper 'Spider-Luz' suit.
