It's been a few weeks and the house has been cleared of cops. I'm rummaging through drawers but can't find anything. The only things I get are pictures of us or her knitting utensils. Tears slip as I move things. This is just painful. Someone did this on purpose to hurt me, or perhaps it was all a horrible accident? No! I will find who committed this crime! I will get revenge! My brothers would do the same thing.
Huh, my brothers. They are probably sleeping in and enjoying themselves. I let out a deep sigh while my ears lower. So far, my new life isn't good at all. Depressing. My mind is hazy, eyes hurt, and I feel like my face is all puffy. I've been this way for a while. Nothing new. When your world falls apart, so do you. Never have I felt so low before. I usually smile and follow my brothers around doing stupid things. With everything changing, I think I am too. Is this a good thing? I mean, I'm using my brain more. Brick said if I use it to much it may explode. Why was I named BOOMer? Ugh! I'm going to die.
I slowly walk out the back door and hop the fence. My mind is blank, but I feel like my legs know where they need to go. Past the alleyway swarming with detectives, by the stairway of the little girl, and straight to the store where my candy is. I stare up at the cashier letting out a huge sigh. She startles and looks down. "M...May I help you?" she asks.
"The murderer. Did you see who it was?"
"E...Excuse me?!"
"There was a murder. The lady left from here. Who did it?"
"I...I don't know!"
"Weren't you here that day?! Please tell me!"
"Uh...I don't know."
"PLEASE!"
"I really don't know!"
"It was a couple days ago! I'm helping the investigation! We need this information!"
"Well..."
"Please...I...I need to know"
"I..It may have been my twin sister who was here"
"What?"
"My twin, she works here as well."
"Why?"
"Uh...It's an easy job?"
I stare at her blankly with questions going through my mind. She hurriedly rummages through her purse to get her cell phone. I hear mumble as the phone rings and gets a sigh of relief when it clicks on the other end. Am I intimidating her? She starts asking for her sister to come down to answer more questions about the case. I can hear whimpers on the other end of the phone. Must be a lot of people asking her to recall that day. The phone slowly ends up on the countertop as the cashier sighs deeply. "She'll be here soon" she says.
After an hour, a girl walks through the door with her hair puffed out, eye bags, and heavy breathing. She looks exactly like the cashier except with shorter hair and she looks dead inside. I guess the cops and detectives didn't give her a break. I'm not helping. She strides over to the counter and converses with her sister. I didn't pay too much attention to the dialog. To be honest, I just want to sleep.
The short haired girl walks over to me, nods. I follow her to a back room and we both sit at chairs opposite of each other at a small square table. It is silent all around. The TV in the corner is off, the fridge isn't even humming, and are the vents even on? She takes a deep breath and glares at me. "There was a person with a black long coat following the old lady when she left."
"What?!" I said shockingly.
"I didn't think much of it at the time. I just figured they were going the same way; this is a busy corner of the street after all"
"What did they look like?!"
"I...I don't know. I couldn't see them clearly through the gray atmosphere of rain. The coat hid everything of theirs."
"Everything?"
"Yes. I only know that someone walked behind her after she got a way down the road. I was pinning up a poster about the weekly specials on the window."
"I see..."
"I know what I saw! The person doesn't show up on the cameras, but I know I saw them!"
"They don't? How is that possible?"
"I don't know. They were there through eyes but not through cameras. The police are questioning me. They may not believe me."
"I believe you!"
"H...Huh?"
"I believe you! If you say that's what you saw, then that's what you saw!"
"Heh...T..Thanks" She wipes some tears from her eyes. "I'll ask my boss to let you see the footage."
"Thank you. You have no idea how much this means to me."
She nodded, got up, and disappeared beyond the door. I sat there listening to my own breath. This is how I will find the killer. They will pay for what they have done. Nobody can get away from me now, I don't care who they are, I will destroy them. I'll make them feel the pain my father felt when she passed away.
"Excuse me" she reappeared, " he said it was ok. At first, he seemed reluctant, but I guess he is tired of fighting all the detectives about this."
"Heh, I don't blame him. They can be quite pushy."
"Say, how are you apart of this anyway? You seem really young."
"Oh! Uh...I'm a prodigy! I may be young, but I'm already apart of the detective departments around the world"
"Wow! Really?! That's amazing!"
"Why thank you!" I followed her to the back where security cameras lit up a room. I squinted looking at the screens.
"This is the outside one" she said pointing at the left middle one. It flickered a bit but only showed father leaving the store. Nothing else happened until 10 minutes later when someone else came to purchase something.
"They followed right after her! I remember! When she goes to leave the screen here, they should be there too." She sighed annoyed.
"I understand" I nod. "They must have tampered with the cameras" ….or they know how to not show up at all.
"Must have! Although they never came into the store." I looked over the other footage to find nothing interesting. Just stared at Cordelia deciding what to get, trying not to cry as she picked up the candy for me. Looked like she tried hard to figure out what flavor I would like best.
I waved to the girl as I walked out of the store. The twins gave each other worried looks, like they knew I wasn't there for detective work in the end. My feet took me where I needed to go. Didn't feel like flying. The air grew cold as I stared at the alleyway approaching. Caution tape fluttering in the wind. A cop stepped in front of me moving his mouth to form words. But all I could hear was nothing, and all I could think was that she chose that candy just for me.
