Chapter 13- Now I Feel the Pressure of the City
Xerayn's notes: You know the way I said I wasn't going to write another long chapter? Well, uh…
Sora was the last to slip out of the hot springs and to get changed into night wear. He was grateful to Midoriya to let him relax without worrying about any questions about his past. But he was still feeling guilty about not helping Kota.
Maybe some fresh air will help…
After checking where he was going to sleep that night, he went out to the front of the building and craned his neck up. The night was still, and quiet except for the twittering of small creatures and the slight rustling of trees. The moon shone down, illuminating the forest ahead of Sora, bringing some comfort. But what Sora was looking at was the stars, the beautiful stars which twinkled without fear. Each one represented a world, and most of them Sora had been to. But there were still many more out there to explore, many more friends to make.
It was frightening when he first arrived at Traverse Town a few years back, to witness a star blinking out. Donald and Goofy had saw the islands blinking out too, just an hour or so before they met him. But Sora managed to save all the worlds and restore them all too. He'd protected them and he had made new friends. He had no regrets.
Ventus had shown him what star was Destiny Islands just before the War began. It was one of the brightest ones in the sky, and Ven at the time explained how he'd found the islands. Sora tried to find it, but the stars were in different places than he remembered. They were dimmer too, which made him frown.
"Where is it?" Sora muttered to himself as he began to wander further from the building, head still upwards.
Try as he might, he struggled to find it. But just as he was about to worry about it being destroyed, he saw his homeworld. It was much less bright than he remembered, but his heart told him it was Destiny Islands.
Sora reached his hand up towards it. "Riku… Kairi… I'm sorry I can't be there. I hope you're doing ok. I miss you guys." Sora smiled sadly.
He spun around at the sound of footsteps, nearly summoning his keyblade. But he relaxed as he recognised it as Aizawa.
"Heya. Whatcha doing out here?" Sora jogged over to him.
"Looking for you kid." Aizawa said distractedly, a frown on his face.
"Oh. Is, um, everything alright?"
Aizawa looked at Sora like he had just sprouted two heads. He walked back to the building before motioning to sit beside him on the stairs. Sora followed, curious.
"Kid, you know you can talk to me, or the staff, or anyone if you need to? About anything?" Aizawa began.
"Yep!" Sora smiled back. He could not say a whole load of things though. To protect this world, as well as protecting himself. If he said anything at all, everything would come out. And the way the people viewed keyblades, well…
"…You were pretty loud when you mentioned about Riku and Kairi." Aizawa closed his eyes.
"You- you heard that?!" Sora panicked.
"Hard not to. You miss them a lot."
"…Yeah," Sora looked away. "I do."
"Are they old friends?"
"The best of friends. I had to go though. We'll meet up someday and everything will be great."
Comfortable silence passed between the two of them until Aizawa spoke up.
"You need to head to bed. Today was the least of your worries."
"Ok." Sora yawned.
He began to head inside but stopped just at the door. He twisted his head and narrowed his eyes into the darkness. He scanned the forest, trying to find what was making him feel on edge.
Aizawa turned around too but turned back. "…Sora."
He blinked, and the ice down his back left. "Sorry, must've imagined something."
Sora headed inside, and Aizawa turned into the teacher's corridor. Sora continued straight ahead until he reached the boy's room and collapsed into a mattress, snoring within seconds.

It was five in the morning when the sixty hero students were awakened the next day, all very not awake and all about to get their limits pushed beyond breaking point. The morning was fresh, but the warm air that carried in the wind gave comfort to the teenagers. Class A was the first to get to work, but once Vlad King had brought out his class, he received a message from his colleague to wake Sora up.
"Improve on our quirks…?!" Someone from his class exclaimed, confused.
Vlad put away his phone into his trouser pocket before explaining further. "Quirks are part of us, similar to a muscle. This year, through training, you've managed to gain technique and stamina, very crutial things in heroics. However, your quirks have not developed. This is what we are working on today."
"That makes sense…" A short but intelligent student called Shoda muttered to himself.
"Class A's already at it, so let's get moving," Vlad began his usual rant. "Class A stole the spotlight every time in the first semester, so the second semester's gonna be Class B's time to shine. Got that? Not Class A. US!"
He stopped mid rant at a question from one of the girls, Tokage. "You say 'improve your quirks' like it's nothing, but there're twenty of us, all with different quirks… how do we each go about doing this? Can we get some details here?"
"A very valid point. Overusing your muscles ends up tearing the fibres, but then they recover and get thicker and stronger. Quirks, like I mentioned, are the same. They get stronger through continued use and weaker if they're underutilized! Which means…"
"There's only one thing to do…" Monoma started to cackle crazily.
"Smash past your limits!"
"And go plus ultra!" The whole class shouted in unision.
"Exactly. I need one of you to get Sora before we head off though. Kendo? Would you mind?"
"Sure." The orange haired martial art girl started to jog inside.
"And make sure to bring him out with you." Vlad added gruffly. Kendo saluted at the instruction.
Itsuka Kendo sighed as she jogged to the dorm room. She did not get why Sora should be given special treatment. After all, why now is he getting into UA? If he wanted to go, surely he would of applied for the school and did the entrance exam? And since he is not in either class, he must have failed, unfortunate as that may be.
Kendo was not one to judge though. She was curious, yes, but not judging and certainly not like Monoma. Monoma took things too far with their rival with 1A.
He's gotten more and more obsessed with it too in the last weeks… She grumbled to herself.
Kendo had reached the dorm room then and she noisily opened the door in a starter attempt to wake Sora up. She soon found out that she would have to go to more… drastic measures. She strode over to the sleeping boy, obvious in the clump of blankets that surrounded him. She crouched and pondered what do to for a few seconds, before deciding to gently shake him by the arm in the theory touch would work better than sound.
It did not.
Kendo then tried to shake harder, just in case. Also a bust.
"No choice then." Kendo sighed, before rolling her sleeve up and enlarging her hand.
She then went to punch Sora in the face. However, just as it was about to make contact, Sora grabbed her hand hard and pulled it away, so sharply that Kendo lost balance for a second. She heard a strange sound, but when Kendo looked back at Sora again, he was up, alert, but his right hand had a few sparkles around it.
His quirk perhaps? Kendo wondered.
He was in a fighting stance, but quickly relaxed when he saw Kendo and the UA PE kit that everyone had to put on for the morning. He also went back to being a sleepyhead. "Mrnin."
Kendo's opinion of Sora completely changed. "Morning. You slept in, and Mr Vlad King sent me to wake you up. Everyone is already outside training their quirks."
"Cool…" Sora rubbed his eyes slowly. "You're in 1B, right? Orange hair, orange hair… oh! You knocked out that person before we got on the bus yesterday. He was pretty focused on us… thankmrgh." He mumbled.
He's adorable like this.
"I apologise for his behaviour. Monoma seems to be obsessed with our rivalry recently." Kendo rubbed the back of her head and shrunk her other hand back to normal.
" 'S ok. You probably wanna start training, I'll come out soon." Sora began to run his hands through his spiky hair.
"I'm afraid that I hafta bring you out with me. You'll probably head back to bed too if I wasn't around."
"Hey! I would not! I would just close my eyes a little bit longer…" Sora protested.
"Somehow I'm struggling to believe that." Kendo laughed a little. Sora was funny and adorable when tired.
"Well, um, I guess I should probably get changed then." Sora said a little more awake.
"I'll be outside waiting for you then."
"Okie dokie!" Sora shot a thumbs up before Kendo turned around and walked out of the dorm, closing the door behind her.
She pondered over her earlier question while waiting. Sora certainly was a good candidate for a hero. He was cheerful and very lovable, with all his charisma he had. He seemed like a goofball, but from the startling way he woke up, he was obviously very capable of fighting. It was no wonder then that he was now under UA's supervision, and soon to be a classmate. But why did he not apply earlier? If he did apply to UA previously, why did he not get in? Why is he a special case?
His reaction from earlier was also worrying. He reacted in such a smooth way to being attacked, it was if he has plenty of practice of being attacked while sleeping. Those implications… are not good. Maybe I'm overthinking it though. He could be really good at reacting, and he was already partially awake… oh who am I kidding, he was fast asleep…
"Kendo? World to Kendo?" Sora waved his hand in front of Kendo, who was jostled out of her thoughts.
"Sorry," She blinked, "Was thinking 'bout something."
Sora had hardly changed. His hair stuck up less, and more in spiky clumps of brown instead. He was wearing the same clothes he had slept in, except for the change to a more unusual jacket on top of a black V-neck. Instead of looking like (albeit a strange) teenager, he looked more out of a JRPG now.
"We should probably head out now. Don't want to fall behind!" Sora smiled, and began to jog off.
"Wait up!"
Sora was strange, indeed.
The day passed by quickly. After Sora got scolded by Vlad for sleeping in (yet again), he and Kendo were led into a large area where all four of the Wild, Wild Pussycats were surveying the 39 other students, each being pushed in different ways. As Kendo was led to her training area (she was enlargening and reverting her hands to their normal size repeatedly to build up speed), Sora looked on in wonder at all the different quirks.
1A were looking the most tired out of everyone, because they started first. Midoriya and a few others were doing stretches and workouts with one of the Pussycats, unknown appearance at Sora's distance. Others were pushing their bodies to their limits, like Jiro, who was sharpening her earjacks. A lot were just using their quirks to the extremes, like Uraraka or Todoroki or Mineta, trying to lessen their weaknesses and strengthen their benefits. It was loud, busy and exhausting to look at, and Sora tried his very best to absorb all of the new information.
"Ah, Sora. Late again." Aizawa spoke, startling Sora out of his wonder.
"Sorry 'bout that." He chuckled nervously.
"Don't make a habit of it. Come with me, you're going to be having your test now." Aizawa smirked a little before walking away.
"Wait. What?" Sora spluttered, running after Aizawa.
"You honestly expect that I forgot about that test I had planned for you on the first day we met? That's illogical. It had to be delayed, as I had to 'let you settle in' before properly testing your abilities. This is your final step before you are enrolled into a class. Although I disagree with that, your test results are lacking, especially History and Quirk Laws."
"I'm a fast learner, don't you worry!"
"I'm not worrying." Aizawa deadpanned as they reached an opening in the forest, far enough away from the other students to not be interrupted, but close enough in case any problems happen.
"I am giving you one minute to prepare yourself. Consider it a luxury you will soon be robbed of." Aizawa began to place eye drops into his eyes.
I really don't have much time to relax these days, do I? Sora internally sighed before looking closer at his surroundings.
They were in a circle opening, as trees surrounded them on all sides. The trees were old, and their trunks thick and gnarled, good to use flowmotion against. The ground below, however, did not have good grip as leaves and mud would make it difficult to keep balance. Good thing Sora was an islander and used to sand, but he should-
"Time's up." Aizawa stated before launching into battle.
His first move was using his white scarf to capture Sora. Sora startled out of his thoughts mid-sentence and dodged out of the way. He began to move quickly and ducked and rolled out of the way as Aizawa began to slowly walk forwards, attacking smoothly and with little pause. Sora quickly recognised he was losing ground, but he struggled to do anything other than react and dodge. He had no choice but to wait for an opening.
"You're really disappointing me. I thought you had more in you." Aizawa taunted, letting his guard dip only slightly, a reaction time only slightly slower.
Sora stayed silent, waiting until Aizawa came closer. He waited until the very last second, before twisting the scarf that was meant to capture him in mid-air and flipping over the pro hero. He wrapped the scarf around the teacher's back, and was about to strengthen his hold when the pro shrugged the scarf off, eyes glowing red.
Sora flipped back once more, retreating but still gaining ground. He was silently cursing himself for his slower reaction times. He truly had lost some of his powers again, but he had no way of knowing how far he had unless he used his keyblade. And that was a massive no no. At least he still had his athletics and basic magic. A bit of strength too, nowhere near his previous level though.
Sora's eyes widened. Magic! He was so used to launching headfirst into battle, that he usua-
"Stop daydreaming and get serious!" Aizawa shouted as instead of a long-range attack with his scarf, he went in close and tried to use his hands and feet instead.
Sora dodge rolled out of the way, and good thing too. Aizawa continued his assault, running after Sora and forcing him to slip up. But Sora had dealt with much worse threats. As the pro hero's eyes returned to a normal hue, Sora used the advantage of the mud to slide using flowmotion to get behind Aizawa once more. The flowmotion not even dying down, Sora gathered the magical energy that was stored inside him and shouted a half-forgotten phrase.
"Freeze!"
Aizawa's left arm was caught, even as he was turning around to face Sora. The ice spread slowly up his forearm, to his shoulder. When distracted, the world-hopper pushed the knife deeper into the wound. He casted a wide range thunder spell, stunning the pro further before shooting a mild fire for luck. Aizawa groaned as he went to attack, but Sora was about to counter with his own spell.
Drat, I'm nearly outta mana!
Sora ran deeper into the forest, flowmotion already activated as he shot from tree trunk to old tree trunk. The rustle of leaves and heavy breathing followed him.
I'm not gonna win this fight at this rate. Ugh, I hate losing my powers…
Sora turned a corner and ran up a particularly heigh tree, which just so happened to have a good vantage point. A plus, the dark green leaves camouflaged him well too. Sora took a moment to steady his breathing and to figure out what to do. He had maybe one more spell he could cast, a fire maybe, but nothing more. Dodging and using flowmotion were only going to get him so far too, not letting him win. If only Sora could use his keyblade, then things would be easier…
"Clever move, hiding yourself in this foliage. But you've limited your options." Aizawa projected to Sora, his voice becoming louder every second.
Think Sora think! What would Riku or Kairi do?
The guardian of light looked around frantically, until his eye caught a nearly snapped off branch. His eyes widened and he began to grin. Timing was all he needed now.
Sora cleanly obtained the branch, which was a little spiky but was not going to do too much damage, and shifted his position in the tree. Aizawa was now coming into frame, and all Sora had to do was wait.
Come on, come on…
There!
Sora leaped down from the tree (and may or may not have used a little flowmotion to help his momentum) and used the branch as a makeshift keyblade. He slammed the branch onto Aizawa's back, braking in the process, and Sora efficiently pinned his future teacher to the ground, head squashed in the mud.
Sora had not realised how quick his breathing had gotten.
"Is the test over now?" Sora asked.
"Yesh," Aizawa said, muffled. "Now pleashe let me breathe."
"Woops, sorry!" Sora released his hold.
Aizawa dusted himself off and wiped his face. "I will have to go through your performance and analyse, but you've got potential. Plenty of it. On first thoughts, you struggled to keep focus on the fight, overthinking at times. Reaction times can be better too."
I knew it. I was treating this fight too easy and nearly lost… Sora sighed dejectedly.
"But- you made a plan and adapted quickly. That's a good quality to have on the field. Work on your instincts and battle awareness. That's all for now. Head back to camp and relax for thirty minutes. Then you will have to make lunch for everyone." Aizawa dismissed and walked away.
"Lunch?" Sora asked, but he received no answer.
Sora yawned, stretching his arms, before slowly walking back into camp.
"Alright everyone, break time! Come get your lunch!" Mandalay telepathically said to all the students hard at work. This news was greeted with relieved smiles.
"I wonder what it is…"
"It better be tasty!"
"I don't care what I'm stuffing my face into, I'm beat."
"You still have half a day to go, dummy."
The students chatted amongst themselves, slowly walking into the eating area outside. The sight that welcomed them was an awedropping one. Several different meals were placed in the middle of each bench, the sweet and savoury smells wafting over to the exhausted students. They were healthy looking, filled with different types of vegetables, but still looked appealing to even the meat lovers.
The forty students rushed to their seats, and began to tuck in to the meal.
"This is so good!"
"Might even be equal with Lunch Rush!"
"Stop talking and keep eating."
"This is très magnifique."
Sora was in the building, sweating and absolutely wiped out. He was thankful he had learnt some skills from Little Chef, otherwise he would have been in trouble. The happy smiles were all he needed to validate his hard work, and the meals would help with training too.
He slumped behind a wall, close to the rest of UA's students, and began to eat the soup he made from the leftovers. He was too tired to have conversations.
The rest of the day flew by. UA students continued to train their quirks and bodies, making progress through the pain. Sora, although not able to train his 'quirk' yet since the teachers had to see how their could help Sora, helped in other ways. He did the minor tasks that the Pussycats could not do currently with Kota, who had started to warm to Sora. They dusted and hoovered the camp, brushed away any leaves that had started to fall down early, and cleaned up after the students. Thankfully, there was not a lot of mess. Yet.
Kota and Sora chatted with each other, getting to know one another. Kota was a kind child, just a little stubborn at times. Sora was reminded of Riku when they played together on the Play Island. Sora, in return, regaled some tales of his when he was younger, like the dreaded Fish Incident. Looking back, it was pretty funny that Sora was so clumsy to slip into the water after trying to throw a coconut into the sea, but at the time it was deadly serious.
And, within a blink, it was the evening.
It was Class A's job to do the cooking that dinner, and they did… average. Bakugo saved the chives, while Todoroki saved the fireplaces. Sora joined in to help, especially when the meat was badly prepared, but as if it was a running joke, people ignored Sora by accident.
Well, at least the meal was edible in the end.
Sora may or may not had left the best portion for Kota, who may or may not had smiled a little at the thought.
"I'm itching…itching to go… Let's hurry up and move…!"
"It's too soon. We're waiting on one more to arrive."
"Besides, as I told you, there's no need to do anything flashy."
"Yeah. But who died and made you boss?"
Seeker sighed. What a bunch of idiots. "This will just be a signal fire. We'll fill those heroes full of holes and put them in their place."
"All for a brighter future."
Not if I can help it. Seeker snarled to himself. Night had descended, and he was feeling great.
Soon, I'll be able to ditch these idiots and follow my own path. Just need more strength. A bright future? Not a chance.
"Sorry about our lateness. Why are you guys so early?"
"That's all of us now, isn't it?"
"Let's go… I'm itchy… Move!"
"Yes. All eleven of us are here. Doesn't matter how many punks with ambition you have. Increases the risk. Much better to use a small group of elites to get the job done."
"This mask is so not cute! This is so annoying!"
"Stop whining, we're on the clock now."
"Ugh!"
"Let's head out, shall we?" Seeker silenced the bickering.
"Mew mew mew… listen, everyone! Tonight both classes are going head-to-head in a test of courage! Your reward for intense training is some intense fun! It's the carrot-and-stick approach!" Pixie Bob tried to motivate the teenagers.
"Seriously? I hate scary things…" Jiro grumbled.
"A mad banquet of darkness…" Tokoyami said beside her.
"Some special event they've got planned for us?"
"Classes going head-to-head? I like it."
"Huh, I wonder if I'm getting to go?" Sora pondered out loud.
His gut twisted at the thought, but Sora ignored it. He put it down to the food settling in his stomach.
After some cleaning up and washing of dishes, Class A and Sora made their way to the front of the camp again, facing the forest they had came from the day before. Aizawa was the last of the staff to arrive, and quickly apprehended five students.
"Sorry to break it to you, remedial group, you've got extra lessons with me now."
"NOOOO WAYYYYYY!" Ashido pouted, almost in tears.
"Sorry, but you were slacking during training earlier, so now I'm gonna cut into your playtime." Aizawa dragged them away, Ashido struggling the most.
Sora frowned, but before he could interrupt, the exercise was being explained by the Pussycats.
"Right. Class B will be on the offensive first. Class A will head into the forest in teams of two, one team every three minutes. You'll find name cards at the halfway point. Grab your own, and then come back here! Class B should already be standing by. Oh, and don't worry! It should only take about fifteen minutes for each team, so you won't be completely scared."
"A mad banquet of darkness…" Tokoyami muttered again.
"The scarers aren't allowed to make direct contact. They'll just be using their quirks to startle you as best they can. So get creative!"
Tiger finished the explanation. "Whichever class makes the other wet their pants more wins!"
"Please don't that's gross please don't." Jiro pleaded.
Iida went robot mode and began to explain the purpose of the task, if it was not clear to everyone already. "I see! It's an opportunity to work on our ingenuity through competition as well as a chance for us to broaden the utility of our quirks. I expected no less of UA!"
Ragdoll began to hand out lots for all the teams, as Midoriya began to mutter to himself. Sora walked over and was about to interrupt Midoriya's slightly-creepy-but-mostly-entertaining habit when Ragdoll came over to Sora.
"Wouldn't want you to miss the fun! Consider this your first day as an official UA student!" Ragdoll nearly dropped the lots box in her exaggerated movements.
"Thanks." Sora chuckled as he removed a ball which had the number eight on it.
Others were already bickering about their teams and trying to switch, but Sora looked about for his partner. Funny enough it was Midoriya, who seemed to forget about Sora's existence (again) and thought he was on a team by himself.
"Hey, number eight, right? We're on the same team!" Sora interrupted Midoriya's spiral.
"Oh thank goodness, yeah, I must've did my maths wrong or something. I thought I was going t-to be by myself."
What is it and me always being forgotten? Sora wondered.
As Uraraka and Asui walked into the forest for their turn, screams could be heard. Sora was not all that worried, but others were starting to get nervous. He was about to ask how Midoriya was, when his gut twisted again. Sora stood up from where Midoriya and him were sitting together, face growing serious as he felt the air shift and unease build.
"Is everything ok Sora?" Midoriya stood up too.
Sora turned around to answer when he asked, but he began to smell a hint of smoke.
Sora ran. He ran to try and find a weapon, instincts on fire. He was given strange looks and Vlad started to follow Sora, but Sora just ran faster. He found a sturdy stick on the ground far enough away from the rest of the group.
"I can improvise with this…" Sora mused.
"Brother, that's a stick. You're stupid to think that you can defeat me with a stick." Vanitas dripped with spite, as he came from the deep shadows.
"Vanitas! What are you doing here?!" Sora immediately crouched into a fighting stance.
His mind flashed back to the previous meeting. "Vanitas! I just want to talk!"
"Urgh, of course you'd be here."
"Let's just say… I'm having some fun."
"I hate your stupid face, why do I have to have your face?!"
"It's not my fault! Please, we don't have to fight!"
"Fun? Don't tell me… you're gonna wreck the Summer Camp for everyone!"
"Fighting is all I'm good at. After all, I am the shadow to your light."
"That's not true! You _ be a _to!"
"This was always going to happen, with or without me. I just tagged along. You always bring chaos with you, wherever you go, don't you know that?" Vanitas summoned his own keyblade, grinning at Sora's outbursts.
"That's not true! _can _if you _to!"
"Vanitas, we don't have to fight! We don't have to be opposites.
"You can be a hero if you want to!"
Vanitas clicked his tongue, face unreadable underneath his helmet. He hesitated for a second, before coldly glaring at Sora once more.
"By the way, call me Seeker while we're in the field, Protector of the Light."
Vanitas launched to attack.
Xerayn's Notes 13:
Aizawa: You honestly expect that I forgot about that test I had planned for you on the first day we met? That's illogical
Me: Yeah, totally didn't forget, totally!
This was long. Again. I really need to stop treating you guys with such long chapters. But then again, I was gone for a month and a half, so maybe I should. I do apologise for the wait, but as I said with the oneshot I posted, I've been hectic with homework and tests. Like, I spent all day yesterday and most of today doing homework for the next week so I could at least celebrate my birthday on Wednesday. Exams are coming up too, and generally I haven't had that much time. And I struggled with the first half of this chapter. But it is now done, and boy I enjoyed writing that last part. I miss writing Vanitas, but there'll be more of him soon.
I haven't proofread all of this, so if there's any mistakes, please let me know.
Oh! And I made a discord for this one day because, y'know, boredom. If you want to join it, here's the link: /WF7E222uCR
Finally, I hope you enjoyed this and I'll see you when I finish writing the next (hopefully not too long) chapter.
