Lily's POV

When they arrived home, Rosie kicked up a fuss. She was unhappy about being woken up by the dreadful spinning of traveling by Floo powder. Like usual, Lily was the one to comfort her. Lily knew that James was terrible at comforting their daughter, yet she still sometimes was unhappy about the way that James could always get out of doing the hard jobs. Even at school he was this way, even though he got so many detentions. Lily sighed, knowing that James did try his best, but Rosie would always want her mother's comforting embrace after something upsetting.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

The next morning, Lily called James down for breakfast a little earlier than usual. He stumbled into the kitchen a few minutes later, bleary-eyed.

"Whassup, Lils?" he muttered, barely keeping his eyes open.

Lily pursed her lips and looked at her husband. "We need to talk."

This woke James up quickly. Lily wasn't usually one to be serious, so whatever it was that was troubling her, he knew he'd better pay attention.

"Wait, what? Why?"

Lily ducked her head and bit her lip, "Do you remember what Dumbledore wanted us to do?"

"...the Fidelius charm?"

"Right."

"Okay, so..."

"We need a Secret-Keeper, James."

"Yeah, so why are you acting so...Sirius?" James winked.

"This is a serious discussion! Don't joke about this!"

"Okay, okay, Lils."

"Do you have anyone in mind?"

"Sirius?"

"No, that's too obvious. If Voldemort does come after us, then he'll know that Sirius is the one we'll most likely choose."

"What, so you think that Sirius would break under the pressure?!"

"No, James. I think that we should choose someone that people wouldn't think we'd choose."

"Okay...what about Peter?"

Lily considered it, "I don't know, James."

"Come on, Lily-flower! No one would suspect a thing!"

"Yes, but haven't you noticed that he's been acting a little...odd around Rosie?"

James sighed. He hadn't noticed anything of the sort, but it was so hard to focus when Lily was being cute! She was twisting a lock of long red hair around her finger and biting her lower lip, and James knew that that meant she was worried, but he just couldn't stand it!

"No, Lils, I haven't. He's a Marauder! He would never betray us."

"Are you sure, James? This decision is one of the most important ones we'll ever make!"

"I'm very sure, Lily. Peter is one of us. We made a pact in third year. Marauders stick together! It's Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs 'till the end!"

"Okay. I'll trust you on this."

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Later that day, Lily and James Flooed to the Headmaster's Office at Hogwarts, having left Rosie in the care of her maternal grandparents. Lily, who was uncharacteristically nervous, kept tying her hair up and letting it back down.

"Hey," James said softly, turning to face her, "It'll be fine, Lils. Don't worry about it. I know Peter; he'll never let us down."

Lily sighed, her hands falling down by her sides, "I know, James. I just can't help it!"

Dumbledore smiled, having walked into his office, "Hello, Mr Potter, Miss Evans."

Lily jumped, twisting to face the old wizard, "Professor!" she gasped, "I didn't see you there!"

"It's quite alright. Now, is there any particular reason that you came here?"

James stroked Lily's hand gently, reassuring her that all would be well. Lily took a deep breath.

"Professor, we've decided who we want as our Secret-Keeper."

Dumbledore's eyebrows shot up, "Ah, already?"

"You told us you wanted an answer today!" James said defensively, beating Lily to it.

"Indeed I did. Who did you choose, if I may be so bold as to ask?"

"We chose...Sirius Black." Lily said, eliciting a sharp glance from James. She looked back at him, non-verbally telling him that she would tell him later.

"Of course," Dumbledore chuckled, "When would you like to perform the charm? And who would you like to cast it?"

"We'll cast the charm ourselves, Professor, if you don't mind. I'm hoping that we'll do it in a week or two, maybe 25 September?"

"Ah," Dumbledore was brought up short. He had been expecting that he would be the one to cast the charm, "Of course, of course. And you are sure that Mr Black will perform the job correctly?"

"Yes, we are, Professor."

"Then I shall see you on 26 September to hear how the charm went. Unless, of course, you wish for me to be the witness?"

"It's alright, Professor, we'll have Peter and Remus be the witnesses."

Dumbledore nodded gravely.

"Good-bye then, Professor."

"Bye, Albus!"

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

The couple were whisked off by the Floo back to their cottage in Godric's Hollow. Once there, James turned to Lily.

"What was that about? What on earth possessed you to lie to Dumbledore?!"

"Calm down, James-"

"Don't you tell me to calm down!"

"Okay! I don't want him to know who our Secret-Keeper is! This way, Peter, and us by extension, will be safe! If everyone thinks that Sirius is our Secret-Keeper, then no one will think that it's Peter!"

James calmed down, "Okay."

Lily looked at James strangely, "'Okay'? That's all you're going to say? 'Okay'?"

"Uh, yeah?"

Lily sighed heavily, "Never mind, James."

James shrugged, having long since realized that it was always better to just ignore it when Lily didn't make sense. Which, to be honest, happened a lot. James was completely out of his depth when it came to Lily. He just knew he loved her and wanted to spend his life with her, and he desperately hoped she felt the same. Considering that Lily seemed to enjoy his company, and had even had a baby with him, James was fairly confident that Lily did indeed love him. And whenever they got into fights, which was a common occurrence, he just repeated that to himself and that usually helped, as James had spent the better part of his seven years at Hogwarts trying to get Lily to fall in love him, and had only succeeded in the last year, when they were Head Boy and Girl together.

"So, the 25 September? That's when we'll do the charm?" he asked.

Lily nodded, "That's the plan."

James smiled, "Okay. Now, let's go pick up Rosie! I bet she's wailing for her papa!"

Lily sighed and smiled at the same time. Sometimes, James could be very immature, but it was kinda cute. And she really did want to see her daughter again. So, she grabbed hold of James, and they went off to Lily's parents' house.
