Chapter 19: Encounter at Omashu

(City of New Ozai)

The sun began to rise over the former Earth City of Omashu, now renamed as New Ozai in the Fire Lord's name. It's been a few days since they fought the Avatar and re-captured the former King Bumi and since then they've been focused on consolidating their power in the former Earth city. They soon started building new structures around the city for the Fire Nation troops and bringing in reinforcements in case the Earth Kingdom resistance returned and attempted another attack. Azula, Sora, Mai, and Ty Lee took the castle as a place to rest and plan for their next move while Mai's parents and her brother, Tom-Tom rested in another part of the large fortress. Sora was sleeping in one of the throne's guest's rooms until the sunlight hit him in the eyes, waking him up. He groaned and slowly got up from his bed, stretching out and doing small poses to keep his body limbered. He then cleaned himself up and got dressed, walking out of his room to the main hall of the castle. There he found Azula, relaxing on the former King Bumi's throne, Mai leaning against the wall while throwing knives and arrows against the opposite wall, and Ty Lee was not in the room.

"Ah brother. Glad you could join us. And here I was about to send a guard to see if you were dead." Azula replied.

"No need. Just a long and good nap." Sora replied, sitting at the base of the throne.

"When you take a nap, you always look like the dead." Mai replied.

"At least I wake up nice and refreshed." Sora replied, making them both smile.

"At the very least." Azula said, ruffling her brother's hair with a smile, making him laugh as well.

"Where's Ty Lee by the way?" Sora asked.

"I think's she doing her wake up stretches. She'll be here soon." Mai replied. Sora nodded and not soon after, Ty Lee front flipped into the room.

"Good morning everyone!" Ty Lee said with a huge smile on her face, making everyone smile a little.

"Morning Ty Lee." Sora and Mai said together while Azula stood up from the throne.

"Excellent. Now that we're all here, let us begin going over our plan." Azula replied, walking around them with her arms behind her back. "Now, we've determined that our main target is Ba Sing Se and since the Avatar came here in an attempt to free the former King, we can only assume that he is looking for a Earthbender to train him in the arts." Azula exclaimed.

"Have we heard anything from Zuko and your uncle?" Mai asked.

"No. We can only guess that they're still on the move and avoiding any Fire Nation troops." Sora replied and he could see the small look of worry on Mai's face before disappearing quickly.

"If Zuko continues along with our plan, then he and Uncle will head to the Earth Kingdom as well. I believe our best course of action now is to pursue the Avatar and keep the pressure on him. If we keep up the pursuit, then we may prevent him from getting the proper training." Azula replied.

"Good plan Azula. But…do we have any idea where he went?" Ty Lee asked, making Sora sigh in response.

"No idea. Zuko and I would spend hours looking over the map to see where he would go. With that bison of his, he could go anywhere." Sora replied.

"Maybe that weird King might know. He was the last to talk to the kid before he left." Mai said, throwing another knife in the center of the ring made by her other knives in the wall

"Sounds like a good idea. I'll have the guards prep him for a talk with us. In the meantime, we can train or do whatever makes you all happy." Azula replied, walking out with a few guards

"Hey Mai, did you want to join me in some training? I could teach you my chi blocks." Ty Lee asked.

"No thanks, I think I'll go check on my family or something." Mai replied.

"Alright, let them know that we're gonna talk to the King too." Sora said and Mai nodded in response before walking out of the room. Sora looked back to Ty Lee, only to see the acrobat standing right in front of him with a big smirk, making him jump a little.

"Did you want to join me then, Sora?" Ty Lee asked.

"Oh, uh well…sure. Lead the way." Sora replied. Ty Lee grabbed him by the wrist and together, they ran out of the throne room and out towards a clear, open balcony that looked out across the open valley and the sun shining in the air.

"Ah, this is a perfect spot. So, ready to start?" Ty Lee asked.

"Sure am! So, what are we covering today? Front flips? Hand-to-hand? Parkour?" Sora asked, only to stop when he saw Ty Lee chuckling at his enthusiasm.

"Hahaha I was thinking it would be nice to work on chi-blocking for today. You're already good on hand-to-hand and your agility could use some work, but it'll suffice. But chi blocking is a skill that I think will be useful. Plus, I haven't trained for awhile and it'll be nice to have a partner." Ty Lee said, making Sora excited.

"Oh cool, where do we start?" Sora asked. Suddenly, the acrobat dashed towards him and quickly punched his shoulder before moving away in a matter of a minute. Sora quickly turned to face her until he noticed that his arm was hanging limply. "Woah!" Sora exclaimed.

"A demonstration. Pretty cool, huh?" Ty Lee asked, with her hands at her waist.

"Yeah, it didn't even hurt. It just feels dead. It feels weird honestly." Sora replied.

"That's how it works. It's meant to reduce the strength in the muscles and prevent your opponent from attacking. If I wanted, you could be lying on the ground unable to move or do anything." Ty Lee replied.

"That's…kinda scary to think about." Sora replied, when suddenly he felt Ty Lee's hand running through his hair, making him laugh a little.

"Don't worry, Sora. I wouldn't do that to ya. But its just a reminder to never upset me, okay?" Ty Lee asked, sternly. Sora quickly nodded in response. "But anyway, the whole point of chi blocking is quick, rapid blows to the pressure points in the human body. You could use your fingers, your knuckles, or even your feet." Ty Lee continued, throwing a few quick punches to demonstrate, and then flipping on her hands to show her feet throwing quick kicks.

"Of course, the drawback is that you have to be up close in order to do it. So, you'll have to be quick if you want to use the technique." Ty Lee replied.

"Right." Sora replied while nodding.

"So, ready to start training?" Ty Lee asked excited.

"Of course. But just one thing…what about my arm?" Sora asked, pointing at his still limp arm, making Ty Lee nervously chuckle.

"Oh right, sorry." The acrobat said.

"Don't worry, I got it." Sora said, casting a cure spell on himself, recovering his arm. He quickly flexed it out in response. "Ah, that feels better." He replied.

"Woah, how did you do that?" Ty Lee asked in shock.

"Oh, its another one of those magic spells I learned. It heals injuries and helps to recover quicker." Sora replied.

"Woah, that sounds handy. Azula told me about your magic but didn't go into much detail." Ty Lee said.

"Did you wanna see? I can show you all that I know." Sora asked. Ty Lee excitedly nodded as Sora showed her his Fire, Blizzard, and Thunder spells and how he was able to use them along with his bending. After explaining everything to her, the two continued to training with chi blocking, acrobatics, and hand to hand. Unknown to the two of them, was a figure in a red and black jumpsuit watching from a rooftop above them.

(Later as the sun began to set)

The two spent hours sparing with one another and getting to know each other's attacks. Sora dodged a few of Ty Lee's strikes before retaliating with his own but the acrobat quickly and gracefully dodged his quick punches. She quickly threw a few more punches and kicks, keeping the prince on his toes until he threw another kick, but she quickly deflected it with her own and threw a punch right next to his other knee, keeping it a few inches away to avoid paralyzing his leg.

"And there goes your foot." She replied. Sora groaned in response as they both relaxed.

"Man, I got close to landing a hit on you." He responded.

"It's alright. You did pretty good against someone like me. But that's why the best counter for someone who uses chi blocking is to keep your distance. Next time we spar, don't be afraid to use your magic or bending." Ty Lee replied.

"But I don't want to accidently hurt you or something!" Sora said.

"C'mon Sora. I'm tougher than I look. Besides, I know you'll never seriously hurt me." Ty Lee remarked, making Sora blush. She giggled in response and pinched his cheeks, making him laugh as well.

"Did you want to take a break from training?" Sora asked.

"Sure. Let's walk around for a little bit." Ty Lee said, taking his hand and walking across the balcony, the sunset turning the sky into a combination of red, orange, and yellow light.

"It's a beautiful day today." Sora quietly replied.

"It is. The world's aura sure is bright." Ty Lee replied, resting her head on his shoulder, making him smile sightly. She then started humming a familiar tune, a tune that his mother used to sing to him so long ago. He looked towards her in shock upon hearing the familiar melody.

"H-how do you know that song?" Sora asked.

"I heard your mother singing that song to you a few times. I don't fully remember the lyrics, but it always just stuck with me." Ty Lee said. Sora smiled slightly and started singing along with it.

In you and I, there's a new land

Angels in flight

My Sanctuary, my Sanctuary, ah

Where fears and lies melt away

Music will tie

What's left of me, what's left of me now

They continued singing the song as they stopped at the balcony and stared out across the city and sun. Eventually, the song came to an end, and they rested their heads against each other while Ty Lee kissed his cheek, making his face blush brightly. She smiled in response along with him as they remain quiet. Suddenly, they heard someone clear their throat behind them and they turned to see Azula and Mai standing a few feet behind them with a few guards at their side.

"Hope we're not interrupting anything." Azula said sarcastically. The prince and acrobat quickly separated in embarrassment, making the new arrivals chuckle to themselves.

"H-how long were you guys standing there?" Sora asked.

"Not long, we were looking for you anyway and we didn't want to spoil the moment." Mai replied, giggling a little.

"Hopefully, it's for a good reason. Did you talk to the King already?" Sora asked.

"Yes, but he didn't have any specific answers. He just said that the Avatar will be searching for an Earthbender who will teach him. We can only guess that he'll be heading further into the Earth Kingdom to search for that teacher. We'll just have to follow any sightings or rumors of the Avatar." Azula replied.

"Did he say anything else?" Ty Lee asked, straightening her pony tail out.

"Yes but it was a request…he wants to talk to Sora." Mai revealed, shocking the two, while Azula remained quiet.

"What?! Why him?" Ty Lee asked.

"He didn't say. He just annoyingly cackled like he always does. Honestly, how he is king is confounding to me." Azula replied.

"I wonder what he wants with me. Better go and get this over with. Maybe I might get something out of him." Sora answered. Everyone nodded in agreement.

"The guards will lead you to the prison. We'll meet you back at the castle when you're done." Mai replied. Sora nodded and walked with the guards towards the prison fortress. The three girls watched him leave until Azula sighed.

"Well now, what to do? Not much amusing things in this city." Azula asked.

"Welcome to my world. The sooner we leave this boredom, the better." Mai responded. Ty Lee was stretching her foot out until she noticed a strange figure walking into the city.

"Huh, who's that guy?" Ty Lee asked, pointing past her friends and the two turned to see the figure past some buildings and out of sight.

"How did he get past the guards?" Mai asked, confused.

"Not sure. Let's go find out girls." Azula replied, running after the stranger with Mai and Ty Lee behind her.

(Meanwhile, in the Prison fortress)

Sora was led through the metal building with guards escorting him to the former King's cell. The guards soon stopped at a door, where they could here faint chuckling coming from within.

"And he is safely secured?" Sora asked.

"We triple checked my prince. And with this fortress around him, he won't be moving any rocks around you." One of the guards answered.

"Thank you. I'll knock when I'm finished." Sora replied. The guard nodded and opened the door, revealing the King still contained in his metal box and hanging from chains on the wall. The only difference was his face was no longer covered with a metal plate since he was inside a building and not outside.

"Ah, the kid of the hour. Thank you for accepting my invitation." Bumi said.

"Your majesty. What did you want to talk about?" Sora asked, bowing slightly.

"Ooh, so formal. I think that's something your sister should learn." Bumi said, smiling.

"I would appreciate it if you didn't badmouth my sister, King Bumi and get to the point." Sora replied, making the king frown in response.

"Straight to business then. Very well. You're here because I wanted to speak with you about something important." Bumi said. Sora raised an eyebrow in response.

"And what is that?" Sora asked.

"Your magical abilities and your future as a legendary key warrior." Bumi replied, making the prince's eyes widened in response.

(Meanwhile, with Azula, Ty Lee, and Mai)

The three girls ran past another building before entering a small courtyard surrounded by the slides for the delivery system and other houses.

"Now, where did he go?" Azula asked, looking around the courtyard. Ty Lee and Mai looked around as well until the knife thrower spotted the figure walking outside the courtyard.

"There!" Mai pointed out and the girls turned to see the figure come to a stop and look towards them. Azula took a closer at the figure's appearance and remembered what Sora told her.

"Wait, red and black suit…with a black mask on your face. You must be the boy that my brothers told me about. Vanitas right?" Azula asked. Vanitas chuckled to himself in response.

"Hhm, and you must be the infamous and older sister: Princess Azula. As first impressions go, I honestly expected…a little more." Vanitas replied, making the princess grit her teeth in annoyance. "And these two must be your new lackeys: Mai, the emotionless knife thrower," Vanitas replied, making Mai ready her knives in response. "And Ty Lee, the circus freak that my brother is currently interested in." Vanitas finished.

"Hey!" Ty Lee yelled out, annoyed by the comment.

"Well, Vanitas, I don't know how you managed to sneak into New Ozai completely undetected. But you're soon going to find yourself regretting it, especially now that we found you." Azula replied.

"That'll be a matter of perspective soon enough." Vanitas replied, coolly. Azula's anger only grew at the quick comment, but she managed to keep her composure.

"So, what hole did you crawl out of to get here? The sewer lines?" Mai asked.

"None. I come from Sora. Wherever he goes I follow. He and I share a bond, a bond that none of you will truly understand." Vanitas answered, making the three girls share a look of confusion. "Answer me this, your highness, has our brother finally been informed on which side he's truly playing on? Can he even put up a decent fight at the very least?" He asked again, making Azula's eyes narrow in anger.

"Did you just insult my brother?" Azula asked. The masked boy chuckled to himself in response.

"I was led to believe that you were the smart one, so you tell me. But don't worry about Sora…once you three are out of the way along with your scarred failure of a brother and your lazy uncle, I'll take such good care of him." Vanitas said in a gleeful tone. Azula started to seethe with rage at the comments about Zuko and Iroh and readied her blue flames in her hands.

"I'm going to make you regret sneaking in here." Azula replied, while Mai and Ty Lee get into their fighting positions. Vanitas laughed to himself again as he got into his fighting stance.

"Your move, princess." Vanitas said in a sinister tone. The three girls charged towards him together while Vanitas leaped towards them with dark fire and ice in both hands as the four clashed in the courtyard.

(Meanwhile, with Sora and Bumi)

"How do you know about my power?" Sora asked surprised as the Earth king laughed again.

"I'm old kid, not blind and you weren't exactly hiding it when you were fighting the Avatar." Bumi commented, making Sora look down in thought. "And in my many years I too have heard the legend of the key warriors. Wielders who travel from unknown realms who can even match the Avatar in power with their abilities. But…in return they live a life filled with danger…a danger that you'll find yourself facing soon enough." Bumi replied.

"Are you talking about the… the dark creatures?" Sora whispered.

"I'm not quite sure myself my boy. I only know what the stories tell but each one tells of dark forces always chasing after the key warriors as they protect the worlds and realms and that's what I wanted to talk to you about...as you continue down your path, the dark creatures will hunt you to this world, bringing with them several unknown dangers." Bumi replied.

"Like what? What could be worse than those creatures?" Sora asked, getting a little worried.

"Geez, I don't know kid. I'm not a gypsy. I don't know what is coming or when. But eventually, your path will lead you to leaving this world to fight whatever comes your way. Especially if you wish to protect your loved ones. Darkness has no qualms and will do whatever they can to get to you. You have a long journey ahead of you kid, you'd best be prepared for is coming." Bumi replied, making Sora look down in thought.

(Meanwhile, back in the courtyard)

A fierce battle raged between the three girls and the masked boy as flames, knives and other dark elements flew around the small area. Vanitas landed on the ground after dodging Azula's flames before creating an ice wall in front of him to stop Mai's knives and arrows. He then launched the wall towards her, making her jump out of the way. Ty Lee suddenly leaped towards him and tried to quickly strike at him, but the masked figure easily dodged the punches before grabbing her by the wrists, restraining her. He looked over to see the princess readying another fireblast, so he quickly moved Ty Lee in front of her as a human shield. Azula quickly stopped herself from firing as they had their little standoff. Seeing this, the acrobat quickly used rose her feet up and used the masked boy as a springboard to break free and flip away, while also kicking said mask as a last measure. Azula saw the opening again and fired a blast right into Vanitas's chest, making him slide across the ground.

"Hahaha, not bad. Reminder to never underestimate the lesser fighters in the world. They could always surprise you." Vanitas replied, standing up fully.

"Lesser fighters?!" Azula grunted out in anger. She quickly fired two blasts of flames at Vanitas, who quickly vanished in a puff of darkness. The three quickly got on the defensive in response, staying close to each other.

"Where did he go?" Mai asked, holding some knives in her hands.

"I don't know." Azula answered, being at the ready. Suddenly, the masked boy appeared in the air and fired multiple blasts of thunder at Mai and Ty Lee, hitting them and sending them flying into nearby walls. Azula turned and dodged another blast of thunder, retaliating with her own fire blast. Vanitas deflected it with an ice blast as he landed back on the ground and shot an ice blast at her. She dodged it and dashed towards him by propelling herself with flames, soon turning the duel into a hand-to-hand fight. The two blocked each other's blows while exchanging elements like flames and ice. Eventually, they both shot blasts of fire right in each other's faces, sending them both flying crashing into wall, though they both managed to land on their feet.

"It doesn't matter what you or your little friends throw at me…you'll never keep me away from my brother." Vanitas replied.

"You'll never hurt my brother. I'll make sure of it." Azula said, angrily determined. She readied her stance and bended lightning to her fingers. Vanitas chuckled to himself and readied his own dark Thunder spell in response. Azula then released her lightning bolt towards her foe while Vanitas did the same. The two bolts collided in between, creating a big explosion as they pushed back and forth depending on the power put in by the two users. Azula and Vanitas struggled against one another while also focusing on their footing.

(Meanwhile, outside the prison fortress)

Sora and his guards were walking out of the prison fortress after the talk with Bumi when suddenly another group of guards ran out to them.

"Prince Sora! You must come quickly!" one of the guards said.

"What's happened?" Sora asked.

"Your sister and your friends are under attack by a masked figure!" the guard answered quickly, making Sora worried.

"Show me where they are! Now!" Sora ordered out. The guards nodded and led him towards the courtyard.

Meanwhile, Azula and Vanitas continued their bolt struggle as the blue and dark lightning strikes danced and collided with each other in the middle while crackling off to the sides like roots from a tree. Vanitas added more power into the bolt making Azula push back a little, so she added more power. The masked boy laughed to himself when suddenly he felt someone lightly punch his arms. He grunted in pain and looked behind him to see Ty Lee landing further behind him while Mai stood next to her and threw two knives at his boots, pinning him to the ground. His arms suddenly went limp while his thunder bolt died down, allowing Azula's bolt to fly towards him and made contact directly with his chest, creating another large explosion. The smoke fell around the figure as Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee let out exhausted breathes. Everything cleared as they saw Vanitas lying on the ground on his back.

"Is…is he down?" Ty Lee asked.

"He just took a lightning shot directly to the chest…he must be." Mai replied. Azula slowly walked up to him still in her fighting position. She reached down to grab Vanitas' mask, curiosity getting to her.

"Who in the name of Agni are you?" Azula asked. Suddenly, a maniacal laugh exited from the black mask, making her back away in shock, while Mai and Ty Lee jumped.

"Ah! He's still alive! Still alive!" Ty Lee exclaimed in fear. Azula quickly jumped away and got into her fighting position again while Mai and Ty Lee joined her as Vanitas stood up.

"Interesting, very interesting. I guess this victory goes to you three." Vanitas replied.

"How are you still alive?" Azula asked.

"Heh, I'd rather keep that secret to myself, though I will keep you all in consideration if I get bored. Not a lot of fun around here in this place anyway." Vanitas said, opening a portal behind him and turning to enter it.

"Don't turn your back on me, coward!" Azula yelled, charging another lighting blast.

"I wouldn't try it. Have you seen your hand?" Vanitas asked. Azula looked confused before looking at her hand to see that her palm now had a second-degree burn on it.

"What? How did-"Azula asked, examining her palm.

"During my time in this world, I've heard much about you, especially from Sora. A prodigy in firebending, smart, cunning, able to deal with any threat that comes her way. Perhaps including…her own father." Vanitas added, confusing the princess.

"What are you implying?" Azula asked.

"Seriously? Think about it…it would be the ultimate test for you. If you defeated your father, you would cement yourself as the very best of the Fire Nation. No one would ever dare challenge you." Vanitas answered. Azula looked down in thought at the proposed challenge, though shook her head at the ridiculous thought.

"I truly expected better from you, Princess Azula. But I see that you're still just another pawn to the Fire Lord, something to be used and tossed aside. Makes me wonder how long Sora will be kept in the dark." Vanitas said, walking into the portal.

"Wait!" Ty Lee called out while Mai tossed a knife towards Vanitas, who vanished into the portal and closed, making the knife hit a nearby wall.

"That was strange. And that's saying something." Mai said, retrieving her knife.

"Creepier than anything else. Especially his obsession with Sora, right Azula?...Azula?" Ty Lee asked, realizing that the fire princess has remained silent, staring off into space while holding her hand. She thought about everything that Vanitas has said to her and her burning rage to see him suffer for everything that he's threatened. She clutched her burnt hand into a fist at the growing anger.

'He won't hurt anyone. Not Uncle, Zuko, or even Sora. I promise that.' Azula thought to herself. Suddenly, she felt someone touch her shoulder and she quickly turned to attack, only to stop when she saw Ty Lee standing next to her.

"Woah, Azula, it's just me. Are you okay?" The acrobat asked.

"Y-yes, of course I'm fine Ty Lee. My apologies, … I just had a lot to think about. Are you two okay?" Azula asked.

"Yeah, we're fine. Mostly. The guy was tough." Mai said.

"Azula!" They heard the voice of Sora and they turned to see the prince running up to them with the guards behind him. He quickly embraced his older sister in a hug while she returned it. "The guards told me what happened. Are you guys okay?" Sora asked, hugging Mai and Ty Lee.

"We're fine. We managed to fight him off." Ty Lee said.

"Was it him? Vanitas?" Sora asked.

"Yes, he was exactly how you described him." Azula replied.

"Is what he said true, Sora? Are you really brothers?" Mai asked.

"What? No! Of course not! But…we are connected in some way if he's able to control more than one element. I'm sorry I wasn't here to help. I'm surprised he didn't come for me when I went to go see the King." Sora said.

"Oh yeah, what did the king want?" Ty Lee asked.

"I'm…not entirely sure. He said that my path might cause me to leave my home and family behind to face these dark forces and protect other realms. And that I may not return when I do." Sora said.

"Don't believe that for a second, Sora! Even if you do end up leaving to these other realms, I know you'll find some way to return us. You never give up; and Vanitas and these dark forces won't stop you." Azula replied, holding his shoulders to comfort him. Sora smiled and nodded in agreement along with Mai and Ty Lee.

"But as of now, we must focus on our current plans and now a new player has entered the game. Vanitas and we are going to ensure that he never harms Sora or any of us when we see him next time." Azula replied.

"Right. I'll make sure he pays for all the pain he's caused everybody. We'd best set off too and learn where the Avatar has set off." Sora said. The girls nodded and the four began walking away until Sora noticed the small burn on Azula's palm.

"What happened?" Sora asked.

"Oh, I…overused the lightning bolt and it must've slowly backfired. I was so focused on beating him that it must've slipped my mind." Azula said, holding her palm out to him. He took it in his hands and cast a small cure spell on her, curing the burn. Azula's eyes held astonishment and surprise as she flexed her hand around.

"How is that?" Sora asked.

"Better. Truly…thank you Sora." The princess replied, with a smile. Sora nodded with a smile as well before turning to Ty Lee and Mai.

"Are you guys okay too?" Sora asked.

"I'm good." Mai replied.

"I'm alright. But thank you, Sora." Ty Lee said, walking up to Sora and kissing him on the cheek, making him smile sheepishly with a blush. The three girls chuckled to themselves in response.
