A/N: First, thanks for the great reviews.

Beta thanks to MarkeyDeSad, too. I have added quite a bit, at his recommendation, so any mistakes you find will probably be there.

Some reviewers questioned it, so I should just say that S'ra's is highly respected and her word carries some weight within the military, so they were more willing to believe Chuck's story. They will still want their scientists to 'examine' him, though.

Having reached the city, all S'ra's problems are over, right?

Exo
Chapter 7: Welcome

A somewhat nervous Chuck followed S'ra into her parents' house. In spite of his age, he had never met a girlfriend's parents before and that was with normal people, not parents that had huge expectations for their daughter.

He did feel more presentable now, though. She had taken him clothes shopping this morning. He had expected to get full length trousers, but with legs at least four inches longer than any other man in the city, that was not realistic. Fortunately, the climate meant that the people wore shorts or skirts, leaving legs bare from knee down. Short-sleeved shirts avoided the same problem with his arms.

Shoes were another matter entirely. S'ra had expected this and had taken him for those first. The man there had measured his feet and promised that he was up to the challenge. Three hours later, they returned and Chuck was now the proud owner of custom-made shoes to go with the rest of his clothes.

So, here he was, walking up the steps to the house, looking smarter than he probably had for years.

S'ra loved how he looked. She could now proudly present him to her slightly judgmental parents. She could sense he was nervous and she grasped his hand and squeezed it. "I think they will approve of you, mainly because you make me so happy."

Chuck was skeptical. "And if they don't like you being with a creature from another planet?"

"Then their opinion doesn't matter. I'm staying with you."

"Or rather, I'm staying with you, S'ra."

She smiled at him affectionately, "Same thing, in my mind."

He still couldn't believe how quickly this had happened. He didn't even know S'ra existed six days ago and now this wonderful woman was his girlfriend.

They reached the door and S'ra opened it and entered, pulling him in with her.

She had told her parents she would be visiting, and at what time, so they should be expecting her. She hadn't mentioned Chuck because she wanted the fact that she was now with someone to be a nice surprise for them.

She led Chuck to the main room where she expected to find her parents waiting for them. What she didn't expect was for a strange young man to be with them.

Although her mother noticed Chuck walk in with S'ra, her father and the stranger paid no attention to him. Chuck and S'ra soon discovered that was because the two men were so focused on what they planned.

Her father spoke first, "S'ra, I'd like you to meet Gralik. The son of Sanklin's governor."

Chuck looked at the young man. Having seen a lot of the men since they had first encountered civilization, he knew the typical male form here. Gralik was slightly taller than most and, unusually, slightly taller than S'ra. His red hair was cut short, as with all the men Chuck had seen. His face would have been attractive if it wasn't for the hard edge to his appearance. In fact, Chuck suspected he would look angry most of the time, not just at himself for arriving with S'ra.

S'ra didn't even look at Gralik. She had realized this must be her parents' latest attempt to pair her off. She would be polite but very clear on reality. She gave the man a cursory glance,. "I am pleased to meet you, Gralik," she said, then looked at all three facing them. "Let me introduce you all to my boyfriend, Chuck." S'ra observed the reactions and continued, "He saved my life numerous times to get me back to the city, but that is not the only reason I am with him. I love him."

Chuck was watching the three too. All looked surprised. Her mother looked partly please and partly worried. Her father frowned, but not as much as the younger man. "I am pleased to meet you," Chuck said, hoping his use of their language was good enough.

S'ra gripped his hand and when he looked at her, she smiled at him.

"That is most unfortunate and does not fit in with our plans," her father said.

S'ra snapped her head back in his direction. "You cannot have plans that clash with my own, Father!"

Gralik spoke up, while glaring at Chuck, "We are to be wed to seal the union between our two states."

"We most definitely are NOT!" S'ra shouted. "Even if I wasn't with Chuck, I am not a commodity to exchange in some deal." She turned to Chuck and said, "We are leaving. My parents have stepped beyond what it acceptable."

"Wait!" her father cried out.

She glared at her father and said, "Let me know when you have disposed of… him." She pointed at Gralik. "Then I will consider whether to visit again!"

She stormed out, pulling Chuck with her.

S'ra couldn't talk until settled back in her car and driving away. "How dare they do something like this?!"

Chuck hated people not getting along, but was very used to disappointments. "Your father is not the governor of this city state, is he?"

"No. Why do you ask?"

"Because Gralik was talking about the union between the two nations. Your father couldn't have driven that."

S'ra thought about what he said. He was right. Would their governor have proposed this? Wanted it? She knew him and wouldn't have expected something like this from him.

It felt like an extreme version of her parents' meddling in her life, but Gralik's comment made it more sinister. She made a decision. "We are going to see the governor." She made a quick turn from their existing route.

"Really? You know the governor?" Chuck asked.

"Through my parents, yes. He and his wife are very good for our people. I can't believe this is his plan, but need to find out."

"Is that a good idea? If he wants this, won't he force you?"

"That's not his way," she forcefully stated.

Chuck decided to just wait and see.

Chuck was surprised when S'ra was admitted so quickly. He was also surprised that he was allowed to go with her.

The governor and his wife accepted the two of them into their private quarters, which surprised him even more. He'd been expecting something more formal.

The governor, Chaldir, rose as S'ra walked in. "S'ra, my dear, so good that you returned safely." He frowned then. "Although the news you brought was less welcome and has Thrace and his generals in somewhat of a panic." He then looked at Chuck. "You must be the man who saved S'ra."

Chuck didn't know protocol, so just said, "Yes, Governor. My name is Chuck Bartowski."

S'ra didn't know his name was more than just Chuck, so was somewhat surprised, but managed to hide it.

"Quite a mouthful," the governor noted. "I will just call you Chuck."

"That is what I prefer," Chuck admitted.

"You claim to come from another planet."

"More than a claim. I come from Earth. I do not know if the speed of light is known here, but light travels thousands of thousands of years between our two planets."

"We do know that speed, Chuck," S'ra told him.

Chaldir asked, "And you observed our planet from yours?"

"Yes, Governor."

Chaldir obviously knew of the speed of light too and his next comment took Chuck by surprise. "So, you were looking at Retith billions of years in your past."

Chuck had not considered this. "So, am I now billions of years in my planet's past or would my people need to wait billions of years before seeing Retith as it is?"

"Interesting puzzle," Chaldir commented.

"Doesn't change the fact that I can't go back," Chuck stated.

"Maybe not WHEN you came from," the governor's wife said.

This was hurting Chuck's brain. He shook his head.

Chaldir smiled. "Glad you find that hard to imagine too." He paused for a moment. "I'd like you to meet my scientists to discuss this and how you came here."

"Certainly, Governor," Chuck replied.

Chaldir turned his attention to S'ra. "And I hear you are to be betrothed to my friend's son, Gralik."

"That's what I wanted to talk about, Chaldir. I didn't agree to this and don't understand who proposed it."

Two pairs of raised eyebrows faced S'ra and Chuck. "But your father told us it had been arranged," Chaldir replied.

S'ra felt more upset with her father, but relieved that Chaldir hadn't ordered it. "Without consulting me."

S'ra told them what Gralik had stated.

"That is not true!" Chaldir said. "Prald and I do not require that to cement the relationship between our two states, we have drawn up an alliance treaty and are now at peace with each other."

His wife, Pal'na asked, "Your parents have been pushing you to find a man, haven't they?"

S'ra knew the woman was friends with her mother, so had to tread carefully. "They want me to have children in 'the optimum time' window."

Chuck was surprised. "People used to think that on my planet too. First child before thirty. However, with so many women having important careers, that has become less and less frequent. It has proved to be unnecessary." Both women looked his way, which embarrassed him. "Sorry. Not my place to say anything."

Pal'na replied, "It is interesting to hear, though." Then she looked back at S'ra. "On the state visit two weeks ago, your parents joined us at the banquet."

"Garron did not talk to me at the banquet," Chaldir told them. "We had a disagreement some time ago and your father doesn't forgive easily."
S'ra knew this. "What did you disagree about?"

"You."

She was surprised to hear this. "Me?"

"We disagreed about your position as a scout for their military. He was complaining about how dangerous it is, what you were doing as an airborne scout, especially during your prime child bearing years."

S'ra groaned. "Those child bearing years again!"

"He is also very worried that you'll never find anyone, knowing how picky you are about the company you keep," the governor said. "I counselled him to have patience and faith that you'll find someone to care for you and be happy with." S'ra nodded and clasped Chuck's hand. "I also reminded him that you are the best pilot on the planet and rated to fly anything with wings." He grinned. "Even a Xynth!" They all chuckled at that. "I also pointed out that you are our best and most capable scout and that he should be proud of how good you are at protecting our people and city."

S'ra blushed at all the praise but found Chuck clasping her hand tighter. When she looked at him, the pride she saw in his eyes was almost overwhelming. She looked back to the governor. "Thank you for those kind words. I can, however, see that my father wouldn't like hearing that."

"He implored me to try and persuade you to give up being a scout and when I refused, he walked out and hasn't spoken to me again since then." He sighed. "So, your father didn't talk to me at the banquet, nor Prald, who was talking with me."

"You did get agitated in those discussions," Pal'na said.

"We were discussing the frakku, which is a threat to both states. Our alliance helps that and I left to add the support we will offer to the alliance treaty."

S'ra could see the scene unfolding and her father misinterpreting what was happening.

Pal'na spoke then, "I believe you father talked about you to those with him."

S'ra groaned. "He was setting me up?"

"Maybe. What he was saying was the opposite of his word with my husband previously. He was saying how proud he was of your achievements," the woman explained. S'ra was surprised and pleased her father did that. "Gralik showed interest and asked to see a picture of you… I think he became fixated on you."

S'ra could see it happening. "And my father picked up on that."

The governor said, "Prald has long been worried about this son. Gralik is his second. The first, Tald, is a strong character. Gralik is not and sees his brother achieving more. He is jealous."

"And wants S'ra as something to make up for that?" Chuck asked.

They all looked at him. The governor's wife finally nodded. "I think you might be right."

"That story of his is a lie," S'ra said. "But I suspect my father saw you walking out after your discussion and worried that you were preparing for possible conflict."

"With the man still sitting at my table?" Chaldir was incredulous that his friend would think that.

"Maybe not at the time, but I can see Gralik turning up at his house later and proposing a political marriage to prevent the conflict."

"I still find it hard to believe Garron would agree to that," Chaldir said.

"It played into his wishes to marry me off," S'ra muttered.

Pal'na said, "Prald and his entourage left two days ago. Gralik must have remained."

"You should talk to your parents, S'ra. Tell them you have spoken to me and that Gralik's claim is untrue." The governor looked at her sympathetically. "I will also tell you father when I see him later."

"And I your mother," Pal'na added.

"Thank you both. This has been enlightening," S'ra told them.

Looking back at Chuck, the governor asked, "Where are you staying?"

Chuck was about to answer, but S'ra got there first. "With me. He and I are together."

Raised eyebrows again, followed by big smiles. Pal'na said, "So, your parents have their wish?"

The pair blushed. S'ra looked at Chuck. "They haven't said so, still being caught up in Gralik's schemes, but I have no doubts about Chuck. I have never met anyone like him."

The governor laughed. "True. We haven't had any other visitors from his planet."

S'ra corrected that. "That's not the reason. No one has ever made me want to be with them like Chuck does." She gripped his hand. "We haven't talked about the future, but I think he is mine and I am his."

Chuck beamed at her. "You are, S'ra."

"You have things to discuss with your parents," the governor reminded S'ra.

They arrived back at her parents' house and walked in. They found her mother where she had been before, but the two men were absent.

"Where is father?" S'ra asked her mother.

"He is getting ready to visit the governor." The older woman was obviously going to say something else, but S'ra didn't give her a chance.

"We've just come from the governor," S'ra stated. Then angrily said, "Father really needs to understand some things before he goes."

"I need to understand things, do I? I don't like your attitude, S'ra," her father said as he walked in. "And your behavior earlier was unacceptable."

S'ra turned on him, glaring. "No. Your behavior was unacceptable and will have caused a problem that the governor will have to fix." She pointed at the seat next to his wife. "Sit and listen."

He looked shocked but sat.

"I don't know which started this. You telling Gralik I was available or him seeing a picture of me and just wanting me. I want to know that, but let me just say I am not available. I wouldn't be, even if Chuck didn't exist. Gralik was lying when he said we are to be wed to seal the union between our two states. The governor has just told me that is ridiculous. There are no problems between the states. Although this might cause it."

Her father sat looking shocked and was speechless.

Chuck could see that he wouldn't quickly respond to this. The man had probably been fooled. "Where is Gralik now?" he asked.

Seeing her husband's state, S'ra's mother responded, "He left but said he would return to collect his wife-to-be."

Chuck could hear S'ra growling and he tried to keep the conversation going. "Did he say when? Also, why would he expect S'ra to be here?"

The woman took a good look at Chuck. "I know S'ra introduced you to us, but you only know us as the parents who seem to have made a terrible mistake. I am S'mia and this is Garron."

Chuck smiled at her. "I wish we had met differently."

S'mia nodded. "So do I. We need to get to know you, but to answer your question, Gralik said he would do that today and I just assumed he would come here. I don't think he knows where S'ra lives."

"We should confront him," Garron said, finally coming out of his shocked state. He turned to S'ra. "I am so sorry. He seemed convincing, but I should have consulted Chaldir. We were so happy that you would have someone, and someone so important too."

S'ra sighed. "You know I make my own choices."

"But you seem so indecisive," S'mia said.

Grasping Chuck's hand, S'ra stated, "Well, I am not being indecisive now. I have found the man I want to be with. For the rest of my life." The look she gave Chuck virtually pleaded with him to agree with her.

Chuck totally agreed. She was the one for him. They had only known each other five days, but spent all the time together since then. When Chuck had been with Jill back in Stanford, that amount of time would have spread over at least four weeks and in that time he hadn't gotten to know the girl as much as he felt he had with S'ra here. "I love your daughter. She would have to send me away for me to leave her."

That was obviously the right thing to say to S'mia who smiled warmly at him. S'ra squeezed his hand in gratitude.

"How could I have been taken in so easily?" Garron asked.

S'ra looked at her father. "I don't know. You are friends with Chaldir. You must know he is friends with Gralik's father, who was there at the banquet you attended."

Her father looked at her. "I didn't speak to either of them. They looked serious. Gralik came and talked to us and we left after Chaldir left the banquet. It was obviously some sort of problem." He shook his head. "I had that on my mind when Gralik visited. I may have mentioned it. He told me this was how they would smooth things over and he seemed to want it." He put his head in his hands.

"I should have objected," S'mia commented. "I should have known you would object."

S'ra thought that too, but had lost the will to discuss this further. "We will confront him when he returns. We will stay for when that happens." She looked at Chuck. "Now, I want you to get to know Chuck."

She described her crash, how she and Chuck first met, more specifically how he saved her life.

Chuck was embarrassed at how she gushed. He was about to downplay his part, but she looked at him and shook her head, frowning slightly.

S'ra thought Chuck would try to make himself seem less heroic and she wasn't having any of that. Her parents were looking at Chuck with very different eyes. S'mia looked like she wanted to leap up and rush to him thanking him profusely. Garron, however, was eyeing him with surprise and some concern.

S'ra continued their story, with their walking across the plain. She didn't mention their first night, skipping over that quickly. "On the second day, we reached another forest. Chuck killed a landic so we had fresh meat to eat and fresh water from the river in the forest. We reached the Garverd mountains the next day. We had to cross this or lose another day at least."

"A great risk," Garron commented. "You could have faced xynth or zryth."

"We encountered both," his daughter told him. That caused raised eyebrows. He looked sharply at Chuck.

"Chuck got hurt when a xynth swooped down and grabbed him, but he overcame it." Garron was going to ask how, but she continued, "We took shelter under a rock ledge as he recovered. I surrounded our hiding place with xaxic to ward off any zryth, but didn't think about attacks from above. One dropped down within our protective zone. I managed to kill it, but it dug talons into my right shoulder and fangs into my left cheek and collapsed on me, it's weight along could have crushed me. Chuck recovered enough to lift it off of me." She looked fondly at Chuck. "He saved me again."

"Sounds like you saved him too," Garron noted.

Chuck spoke up at that point. "She saved me in more ways than that. Your daughter is amazing."

"And you seem to be stronger than most," Garron commented. "How exactly did you overcome the xynth?"

Chuck looked at S'ra, not sure if he should say, but she nodded. He turned back to her father. "I broke its legs."

"What?" Garron sounded incredulous, leaning forward.

"The xynth claws were in each shoulder. I watched in horror as it started to carry him off. He reached up and ripped the talons from his shoulder and pulled the legs apart so fast, he broke them. The xynth flew off in pain and Chuck dropped over twenty feet. I still don't know how he avoided broken legs or ankles."

"I learned some time ago how to land safely," Chuck said.

"You seem to have saved each other on this trip," S'mia said. "That must have created a strong bond."

She's sharp, Chuck thought.

S'ra knew what her mother was saying. "It wasn't just that, Mother. There was something about him that attracted me anyway." She looked at Chuck. "I have spent five days with him. We haven't been apart in all that time." She turned back to her mother. "You know I lose interest in most people after about four hours contact." She blushed. "Even B'rack."

Her mother rolled her eyes, but nodded. "You never liked conversation."

S'ra gripped Chuck's hand. "Not with Chuck. We could talk and talk."

During the story, Garron had been closely studying Chuck. He asked, "Where are you from, Chuck? I've not seen men of your coloring or height. Nor have I heard of such strength. I am worried my daughter has a savage as a lover."

S'mia glared at her husband. "Garron!"

Chuck glanced at S'ra, who nodded again. After all, the military and the governor and his wife knew. "I come from another planet, one called Earth."

Amidst the shocked expressions, different emotions came through from the two parents. Garron looked doubtful, but S'mia a mixture of worry and disappointment were clear.

S'ra tackled her mother first. She knew what was going through the older woman's mind. "We love each other, Mother. We will be happy together, I know it. We do not know whether we can have children. I know that is important to you, but surely my happiness is more important."

S'mia looked embarrassed. "You are right, S'ra. I am happy for you." The two embraced.

Chuck was looking at her father. "I weigh more on Earth. Here I am lighter and am stronger."

"How did you get here?" Garron asked.

"We have what we call 'telescopes' through which we look at the stars. In a new one, we had just found Retith. When I increased the size of the image to look more closely, something pulled me here. I awoke naked on the plain with nothing."

S'mia looked at S'ra. "Naked?"

S'ra smiled and shook her head. "He had covered himself with vetia by the time I met him. And created a spear from one of its branches. That was what he threw to kill the ixtag."

Garron now looked impressed. "You are good at adapting."

"He is amazing, Father."

Garron looked at his daughter with a smile. "Winning your love is perhaps his most amazing feat."

Her parents spent the rest of the day learning about Chuck. Her father wanted to know about his home planet, which Chuck happily provided. Her mother, however, wanted to know more about his time with S'ra. S'ra smiled when asked how he learned their language so quickly. "The first word I taught him was 'leg.'" Her parents looked confused. "He spent so much time looking at my legs as we walked." Chuck blushed, but couldn't deny it. "It seems he rather likes my legs."

Chuck just said, "And I thank you two for those lovely long legs and everything else about her."

The conversation continued over dinner and well into the evening.

Gralik never showed.

"He may still come tomorrow," S'ra stated. "Can we stay here and all confront him together?"

Her parents were only to happy for that to occur. "Your bedroom is always ready for you, S'ra." She then looked unsure. "We can prepare one for Chuck…"

S'ra knew the cause of her mother's uncertainty. "He will sleep with me, Mother." She colored slightly, looking over at Chuck who blushed furiously. "He keeps me warm at night."

The older woman nodded and smiled at the two of them.

Garron frowned slightly, but the glare he got from his wife stopped him from commenting.

Fortunately, S'ra had bought some night clothes for him to wear when she had taken him shopping. So, he was now wearing what seemed like a t-shirt and shorts, similar to what he would have worn back in Los Angeles. It made him nostalgic, but he tried not to get wistful for those days. He was a lonely guy back there. Here he had the best woman on two planets that loved him.

S'ra was wearing similar clothing. She still looked gorgeous to Chuck and felt it too as they snuggled in bed.

"Will you have to be involved when the savages attack?" he asked. This had been worrying him.

She gazed into his lovely brown eyes. "If they get passed the main army, I think we all will."

"Is that likely?"

"I don't know," she replied. "Don't think about that now. We are together and now know that any plan to marry me off is dropped."

She kissed him and rolled onto her side facing away from him. "Come over into you sleeping position and hold me."

He chuckled and spooned her.

She immediately placed her feet on his and hummed.

He kissed just behind her ear. "I love you, S'ra."

She pulled his hand tightly against her stomach. "I love you too, Chuck."

Chuck woke with something being held over his mouth. He was about to struggle when he breathed in some strange scent. As he passed out, he thought the word 'chloroform.'

When Chuck woke, he had a foul taste in his mouth.

He was lying in darkness and reached out for S'ra, but she wasn't with him.

He remembered being knocked out and jumped up and ran out of the room, noticing the door that had been closed was now ajar. "S'ra!" he cried out. "S'ra!"

The door to her parents' bedroom opened and a bleary-eyed Garron looked out. "What?"

"I was gassed and S'ra must have been taken!"

S'mia appeared at the door too and the two parents got Chuck to tell them what he knew.

S'mia smelled his breathe and noticed the residue of what he had inhaled earlier. "Chendia, is a powerful anesthetic." She had to explain the word to Chuck. This was the first time they had realized the language barrier that he had faced.

"We have only been asleep two hours," Garron said. "Whoever did this cannot be far away."

"Gralik," Chuck stated. "It must be him."

"Surely not," S'mia said.

Chuck was sure. "Who else would know we were here and to break in to your house, gas me and take S'ra from her bed?"

"He didn't know for sure that she was here," S'mia pointed out.

"I think Chuck is right," Garron said. He looked at Chuck. "Get dressed, we'll go to the commander." He turned back into his bedroom to get dressed himself.

Chuck had never dressed as quickly as he did that night. They leapt into Garron's car and left S'mia worrying behind them.

Garron had called ahead, so Chaldir was up and waiting for them "I have called Prald. His son has told him he is returning home. He knew nothing of what the boy had done."

"We must go after him," Garron declared. "Can we have men? He may have some that will fight."

Chaldir shook his head. "With the frakku coming, we can't spare anyone."

Garron was going to argue, but Chuck stopped him. "Do you have a retinue of your own, Chaldir? Can anyone fly a craft and take me?"

Garron looked skeptically at Chuck . "One man against who knows how many?"

"I have to save her," Chuck declared. He had no idea where this courage was coming from.

"You can take one of my faster fliers and…" Chaldir looked at the two of them and leaned closer to state, "My best flier."

Chuck could tell that the governor shouldn't do this, but he certainly wasn't going to argue.

Chuck soon found himself approaching a flier. It was looked much like a speed boat back on Earth, but obviously flat-bottomed. Chuck guessed that, like the car S'ra had driven, it was much like a hovercraft, but able to rise higher. This proved to be correct. If it hadn't been for his worry about S'ra, Chuck would have loved to understand the engineering involved.

In no time, he was sitting next to a man that reminded him of a beardless Morgan Grimes. He had more muscles, but the similarity was surprising.

"I know the direction to fly. We may catch them before we get to Sanklin." Air Sargent Durlik looked at Chuck. "I am just a flier, but will help as much as I can."

"Thank you, Durlik, I appreciate that."

The two men sat in silence as the flier skimmed through the air faster than Chuck could have imagined. He hoped S'ra was not hurt. "I'm coming, my love," he muttered.

A/N: Sorry to be ending this on some angst, but that was the best place to end this chapter.

Also, sorry that it is going to be at least a couple of weeks before the next chapter comes out, as I am still trying to write it!
